Mike Hernandez - September 01, 1971 - January 31, 2022

Departed: 01/31/2022 (Coeur d'Alene)
Obituary Preview: Michael Raymond Hernandez (Age 50)
Michael met his Savior face to face Monday, January 31, 2022 after an extended stay at Kootenai Health. Though we, his family and friends, will miss him terribly, we rejoice that he is whole and healed in the presence of Jesus, and we will see him soon.
Mike was born September 1, 1971 in Eureka, California to Arthur and Cynthia (Mathews) Hernandez. Brother, Shawn, completed the family in May of 1973. Mike and Shawn spent their childhood years camping at Whiskeytown Lake, visiting Disneyland, sledding and making mischief with their cousins and friends.
After graduating from Arcata High School in 1989, Mike attended College of the Redwoods while also working at his Uncle Luis and Aunt Ruby’s restaurant, Luna’s Mexican Restaurant. It was there, while bussing tables, that Mike met server Cris (Cristol) Craig. No one could have foreseen how this casual meeting would quickly turn into an epic love story.
Shortly after meeting, Mike and Cris began dating, and against all odds (and all common sense), they set out on a life-changing adventure, packed up their cars and moved to Idaho. There, they faced many obstacles which only served to deepen their love for one another. They were married in December of 1992.
Wanting to provide the best possible life for his family, Mike began his 29-year career at Super 1 Foods in June of 1992. There he worked his way up, eventually becoming the Store Director in Post Falls. Throughout the years, he made many lifelong friends, cracked many jokes, always humbly led by example, exhibiting dependability and honesty in all he did. Even throughout two plus years of chemotherapy, he never missed a day of work. In 1993, Mike and Cris’ love story continued as they added Jordan Michael and then, Justin Cristopher in 1998. Their little family of four was now complete. That is, until Maddy joined the family when she and Justin were married in August of 2019. In June 2021, little Zachary Michael was born making Mike a grandpa! If you thought Mike was a great Dad, you should have seen him in the role of Grandpa!
Aside from his family, two of Mike’s greatest loves were music and sports. His eclectic taste in music was instilled at an early age by his Dad Art, who was always ahead of his time with the latest and best stereo equipment. Mike grew up listening to The Jackson 5, Run DMC, and ZZ Top and made sure his boys also knew good music. He’d been known to take the long way to work, just so he’d have more time to listen to his favorites.
Rounding out his passions were The Giants and The Raiders. From the time he was a young child, Mike was a devoted fan and never betrayed his teams, regardless of their stats.
In 2007, Mike made the most important decision of his life by committing his life to the Lord. And just like that, he was on Team Jesus, never looking back. While in the hospital, Mike made it known that his greatest desire was to tell people about Jesus, and though it may have looked a little different than he anticipated, there was never a day that his life and his loved ones, on his behalf, didn’t do that.
Mike is survived by his wife, Cris, sons Jordan, Justin (Maddy and grandson, Zacky), parents Art and Cynthia Hernandez, brother Shawn (Bridgett) Hernandez, Sisters in law Tonya (Billy) Hines, and Julie (Chad) McEwan, Mother-in-law, Susan White (Howie), Father-in-law Don Craig (Lynne), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Obituary Preview: Patricia Joyce Brinkman Stachecki, 91, passed away January 24, 2022 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family, as she peacefully slipped away.  She was born November 21, 1930 to William Frederick Brinkman II and Theresa Dolly Lisuzzo, in Detroit, MI. The oldest of four, she changed schools as her family moved about; finally graduating from Milford High School in Milford, MI.
Her first job outside the home, the year she turned 16, was working in the restaurant her father opened, called The Arcadia, located in Bay City, MI. During the year it was open, she worked in every job possible.  As a straight ‘A’ student her dream was to be a laboratory technician; however, she met the love of her life, George Peter Stachecki. From the moment they met, they were inseparable. Every day Dad sent Mom a love letter before they married on November 4, 1950. Together they raised 4 children in Clawson, MI.
In July, 1967, they moved across the country to Spokane, WA. In 1972, they opened Angus Meats Delicatessen;  not long after, it became Angus Meats, Inc. She would “quit” every Friday, so she could enjoy her weekends. Together they ran the business until they retired in 2000. Her favorite place on earth was the cabin they built on Bull Lake near Troy, MT.
She was much more than a homemaker: she was a self-taught seamstress, a business owner, construction supervisor, excellent cook, hostess extraordinaire and she definitely could have won the Wheel of Fortune! Not only was she the best daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend - she was the best mother-in-law ever! She was a great role model to her entire family.

Clifford "Don" Donald Allen Jr. - November 12, 1934 - January 17, 2022

Departed: 01/17/2022 (Coeur d'Alene)
Obituary Preview: Clifford Donald Allen, Jr., 87, passed away peacefully at his home on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, ID on Monday, January 17 with his wife of 33 years, Sally, by his side.
Born in Oakland, CA in 1934 to Clifford and Marjorie Allen, Don attended Oakland Tech High School and the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1957 with a degree in history. Despite contracting polio when he was twelve years old, Don joined the California National Guard and saw brief active duty in the Korean War. An avid reader and an Oakland A’s fanatic, Don loved to shoot skeet and birds (as long as they didn’t fly too fast). He enjoyed good wine, Gonzaga Bulldogs basketball, science fiction, and acting with integrity.
Don epitomized the Rotary slogan “Service Above Self,” and over his lifelong career in banking in the San Francisco Bay Area Don worked without ceasing to better the world. In 1984, in order to create a banking culture fully aligned with his community-based values, Don founded Cupertino National Bank and Trust. He served as the Founding President/CEO and Chairman of the Board for the next twenty years and also as a member of the board of directors of the California Bankers Association for ten years. The bank became a cornerstone of the community, and in 1998 Don was recognized by the City of Cupertino as the Citizen of the Year.
Don served on the boards of dozens of Silicon Valley non-profit organizations and chaired the capital campaigns of even more. He was a mentor to executives across the valley and in his retirement community of Coeur d’Alene. His legacy lives on in every ask and phone call made by the small army of dedicated fundraisers he taught, inspired, and lifted up over the years. Even after entering hospice care, Don was making calls to encourage the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club Foundation to reach their million dollar capital campaign goal, a goal they reached before his death.
Don was a Rotarian for over 50 years, serving in the Rotary Clubs of Los Altos, San Francisco, downtown San Jose, and Cupertino in California; he continued that service in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he and Sally built their home upon his retirement. He was President of the Rotary Club of Cupertino in 2000-2001, and traveled to Accra, Ghana for Polio Eradication National Immunization Day and Texcoco, Mexico to distribute 240 wheelchairs. In 2003-4, he had the honor of serving as District Governor, Rotary International District 5170.
A recipient of the Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America, Don was a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite Bodies, for over 50 years and a member of Aahmes Temple, Ancient & Accepted Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was a Knight Commander of Justice and Prior Emeritus, Priory of the Western United States, of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller.
Witty, warm, and loving, Don leaned into his role as patriarch. He gently and firmly insisted his many children and grandchildren explore their full potential as human beings. He believed that hard work and life-long learning were twin pillars of a successful life and he instilled those values in his family. A proud grandfather, Don donated to the Rotary Foundation in the names of all his grandchildren, racing his Rotary friends to turn the births of their grandchildren into acts of fundraising prowess.
Don leaves behind his wife, Sally Allen; his sister, Judy Young; his sons, Cliff Allen (Sandy), Chris Allen (Terri Hauschild), and Ned Allen; his step-daughters, Brooke Carlson, Stephanie Carlson, and Sara Tavernise (Peter); his niece, Kathryn Crawford; his grandchildren, Miles Allen, Katie Burstein (Omer), Addison Allen, Baja Allen, Charlotte Tavernise, and Sylvia Tavernise; and his great-grandson, Teddy Burstein. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved grandson, Kiko Allen.
It is impossible to overstate the impact Don had on not just his family, but the communities he called home. Though he could have boasted about his political connections, executive positions, and memberships in exclusive clubs, that wasn’t Don’s style. He was humble, honest, and self-effacing, always using the social capital he earned for the betterment of others. Dependable, helpful, and eternally optimistic, Don brought joy and laughter to the serious business of making the world a better place. He will be deeply missed.

Catherine Ann Jacobson - December 13, 1925 - January 14, 2022

Departed: 01/14/2022 (Coeur d'Alene)
Obituary Preview: Catherine Ann Jacobson, 96, lifelong resident of Coeur d'Alene, was called to her heavenly home in the early hours of Friday, January 14th, 2022.  Catherine spent her last hours surrounded by, and in the loving embrace of, her family.
Catherine was born on December 13, 1925, in Coeur d'Alene, ID.  She was the first daughter, and second oldest of 9 children born to Earl and Gertrude (also born in Cd'A) Dawson of Coeur d'Alene, ID.  As Catherine unexpectedly arrived, she was delivered by her father in the home where she grew up.
A woman of great faith, Catherine was a lifelong member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. She attended the Catholic schools including Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Academy, which at that time was the old army barracks in Coeur d'Alene's Fort Grounds.  She graduated Salutatorian of her class which she often joked was no big deal as her class had only 13 students.  After graduation, Catherine worked as a secretary for the president of the phone company in Spokane, WA.  As she didn't like the daily commute, she soon got a job as a dental assistant in Coeur d'Alene.
In August of 1946, while riding bikes with her lifelong friend, Catherine met Thomas H. Jacobson.  Tom asked her out that very day and proposed just four months later.  The couple were married ten months after that, on October 11, 1947.  Catherine and Tom were married for 65 years when Tom passed on January 29, 2013.  They had seven children: Pat, Rick (June), Judy (Doug Cornutt), Dan, Ron (Susie), Jan (deceased), and Anna (Jeff Wood).  One of the saddest times in Catherine's life was the passing of her "little Jan" whom she lost to a brain tumor on July 4, 1963, at just over 3 1/2 years old.
After Tom's passing, Catherine and son Pat moved from the home she'd lived in, for 58 years, to Garden Plaza retirement community. Here she lived out her life with many new friends with whom she enjoyed playing cards and other games, watching favorite tv series and just visiting. Catherine especially loved watching "her" ZAGs play, (she seldom missed a game), and watching game shows, her favorite being Jeopardy.
Catherine counts, as her greatest blessings, her long and loving marriage to her devoted husband and best friend, her children and their spouses, her 22 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild...and more sure to come.
In God's plan, the greatest gift of life is the joy to be found in death, in His arms.
Catherine is also survived by her loving siblings, Mary Dawson, Jim Dawson, Joe (Joanne) Dawson, and sister-in-law Margaret Dawson.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Vincent de Paul, of Coeur d'Alene.
Vigil service and Rosary will be held on Thursday, January 27th at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. 4th Street, Coeur d’Alene, ID, from 5:00-7:00PM with Rosary commencing at 7:00 PM.  A Funeral Mass will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, February 3rd at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 919 Indiana Ave., Coeur d'Alene, ID.

PJ Sand - August 19, 1955 - January 14, 2022

Departed: 01/14/2022 (Coeur d'Alene)
Obituary Preview: On January 14, at his home in Coeur d’Alene, PJ (Phillip James) Sand, transitioned to heaven to meet his Savior.  PJ’s early-life and ongoing exposures to Perchloroethylene compromised his health so that substances harmed him greatly. PJ had taken the Covid vaccinations.
PJ was born on August 19, 1955, to Paul and Inez Sand in Coeur d’Alene. The family always celebrated the deep German roots of his father, Paul.  PJ loved the fact that for 50 years he never lived more than 6 blocks from downtown Coeur d’Alene.  He and his mother, father and 9 siblings were a fixture in all things Coeur d’Alene.  He grew up on Coeur d’Alene Avenue across from the IHM school and St. Thomas Catholic Church – where the church was a fixture in their traditions - having uncles and an aunt in the clergy, as well.  PJ transitioned to Coeur d’Alene High School when IHM closed and he graduated from Coeur d’Alene High in 1973.  Family was a way of life for PJ in an extra-special way. Beginning in the wee hours of the morning, Dad, Mom, PJ and all his siblings would work together at their family business, French Cleaners on Locust Avenue, Coeur d’Alene.  Even though PJ had dedicated much of his life to his family and their business together, he also carried those traits through to everything he did.  PJ was loyal, meek, humble, gracious and always unassuming. The family loyally worked together and played together – enjoying fishing was one of their best memories with their father at the family cabin in Priest Lake.
PJ was predeceased by both of his parents, Paul and Inez.  He also was predeceased by his sister Cathy Farquar, his brother Timothy Sand, and just recently, in 2021, by his younger sister, Barbara Tolley, and his younger brother, Andy.  PJ met his wife, Rhonda Fleming, at McEuen Field playing softball during the summer of 1978.  They were married for 29 years, divorced and remained friends.  At 50 years old, PJ became the father to Mittu and Abel. Along with Mittu Sand of Burien, Washington, Abel Sand of Coeur d’Alene, he had grandchildren Ada, Amiya and baby Amari —a grandson due to arrive in two weeks. His character and kindness was passed on to his son and daughter and he loved being a parent to them. PJ is also survived by his brothers Don, Skip, Ken, Mike and Nick and their wives and children, uncles and aunts, many cousins and numerous lifelong friends whom he held dear.
PJ only ever had friends and considered no one an “enemy”; he loved to love people.  His gift was simply loving people.  He always produced a radiant smile even though he was in constant pain these last several years.  PJ came alive with any social gathering of his trusted and dear, lifelong friends.  He had formerly been an avid golfer (including St. Andrews, Scotland), was a great softball player and bowler.  Boating with friends and being on the lake was a fun part of his life for many years.  He loved travel and traveled to many of the beautiful places that God created – including the Holy Land and Lands of the Bible – making friends everywhere that he went.  PJ also was a familiar fixture in the summer as he drove around in his 1974 Volkswagen Thing – with a weiner dog propped up on his lap.  He cherished the times he could share it with his friends in Coeur d’Alene.  PJ gave his life to the Lord Jesus Christ in August, 1981, and was baptized in July, 1982.  As promised, God finished the work that He began in PJ.
PJ’s family and children invite you to celebrate his life together at the Altar Church, 901 Best Avenue, in Coeur d’Alene, on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at 4:00PM.  Donations in honor of our incredible PJ may be made to Good Samaritan Rehabilitation, 901 Best Avenue, Coeur d'Alene.  PJ will be interred at St. Thomas Cemetery along with his family.

John Grant Morrison - August 19, 1945 - January 13, 2022

Departed: 01/13/2022 (Coeur d'Alene)
Obituary Preview: John Grant Morrison was born, August 19, 1945 in Augusta, Georgia, the third of four children to Presbyterian minister Robert S. Morrison and Margaret Herndon Morrison, a harpist and Minister of Music.  A few short years later, Margaret was widowed and raised the four children with the help of her sister, Sarah Eliza Herndon, a college professor.   After graduating in 1964 from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery Alabama John enlisted in the US Air Force, stationed at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington.  It was there, in Spokane, that he met and after a very brief courtship, married Rita Kay Hulse, the love of his life on January 21, 1967.  Receiving an honorable discharge from the USAF in 1971, John began a career in sales for Noxell Corporation where he traveled the PNW and into Western Montana.  Once John and Rita began their family, he decided to pursue a real estate license and later a brokers license as well as a career that would enable him to be an active and involved dad for their three children.  He was a vocal and enthusiastic coach for the children, involved with Indian Guides, Scouts, YMCA Basketball and Spokane Youth Sports soccer.  His yells of “atta boy girl” to all the players would generally leave him hoarse by Saturday nights.   Sundays were spent at Whitworth Presbyterian Church where he was active as an Elder for many years.  In 1985, John took on the next career challenge as the Director of the Spokane Airport Business Park and in 1993 becoming the Executive Director of the Spokane Airports where he led much development and growth. John retired from the airport in 2005 to become the full-time caregiver to Rita following early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis.  John lovingly cared for his beloved wife until she passed in December 2012. The next chapter for John was devoting his time and energy to being a super grandfather to his three grandkids.  Watching Joe play basketball and baseball was truly a highlight for him, along with hosting Camp Grandpa each summer for his twin granddaughters Megan and Madeline.   John enjoyed long drives and road trips as well as family gatherings. He would not hesitate to take a 2-day drive to Minnesota to spend time with the granddaughters, a quick drive to the coast to spend time with daughter Sarah, or a 3-day drive to spend the winter holidays in Orange Beach, Alabama, where he would encourage any and all of us to join him, and if we weren’t yet there, he would torment us with pictures and weather reports from the beach. Always the life of the party, John loved to have lots of people around and always enjoyed entertaining.  Generous and loving, he had a big heart, big voice and a big personality.  Although the last 18 months for John were filled with health issues, he remained fiercely independent and was still planning on future family gatherings. John is survived by his children and grandchildren, Tina, Lloyd, Megan and Madeline Bondy, John, Jill and Joe Morrison and Sarah Morrison, his sisters Sue Bryant and Lynn (Mitch) Rogers, in addition to much extended family.  Preceded in death by his parents, his Aunt Sarah, brother Steve Morrison, nephew Carl Nowakowski, niece Mary Alice Ratzlaff and his beloved wife Rita. A memorial service celebrating John’s life and memory will be scheduled for the springtime.
