Ruth Ann Gooden - March 07, 1929 - August 03, 2021

Departed: 08/03/2021 (Dike)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Ann (Bern) Gooden, nee Weiss, 92, formerly of rural Dike, IA, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at the Western Home Deery Suites in Cedar Falls, IA.
A family graveside service will be held Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the Reinbeck City Cemetery at 12:00 noon.  Arrangements are by Abels Funeral Home.
Ruth Ann Weiss was born on a farm outside of Reinbeck, IA, on March 7, 1929, to Raymond F. and Lucile Weiss, nee Wilhelm.  Ruth Ann was educated in the Reinbeck Schools.  Ruth Ann married Wilmer R. Bern on June 15, 1948.  He died January 11, 1979.  Ruth Ann married Samuel K. Gooden on November 25, 1983.  He died December 22, 2008.
Following graduation from Reinbeck High School, she taught school for two years in a one-room school in rural Tama County.  Ruth Ann also worked at Dietrick Turkey Farms and as a cook for the Dike Schools.  In 1972, she started working at the Corn Beef Feed Lots, retiring in 1991.  During all of this time, Ruth Ann was also a homemaker, raised five children, helped Wilmer with their dairy farm, grew an amazing garden (preserving everything!), sewed for her family, crocheted, cross-stitched, did needlepoint, arranged fresh flowers like a pro, and—her favorite—learned to weave on looms of all sizes.
History was one of her passions and she loved antiques and restoring them.  For many years, she and Sam helped with the Annual Pioneer Craft Fair, Morrison, IA, demonstrating many crafts such as churning butter, cooking stew over an open fire, and making rugs on the loom.  Ruth Ann was an avid reader.  If there was something new or she didn’t understand she read about it.  She also loved music and was a very good pianist.  Ruth Ann was a member of PEO, Northeast Iowa Spinners and Weavers Guild, the Dike Yesterday Antique Club, the Audubon Society (which included a life-long list of identified birds and their songs), and Dike United Methodist Church.  She was involved in 4-H supporting her sons with their many fair projects and as a leader for the girls’ club, including the years that Kathryn was involved.
Ruth Ann nursed her husband, Wilmer, through kidney disease and failing health until his death in 1979.  After she married Sam, they traveled the country together, camping and canoeing from the Snake River to the Boundary Waters to the Okefenokee Swamp.  (She was crazy!  Those alligators were HUGE!)  Ruth Ann and Sam eventually moved from the farm to a condo at Windridge, Western Home Communities, Cedar Falls, IA.  She continued to enjoy driving to visit family and going to church, the bus trips offered by the Western Home, attending the plays at the Cedar Falls Community Theatre and the University of Northern Iowa Theatre, and cheering on the UNI Panthers until declining health forced her to give up going out.
Ruth Ann is survived by sons: David (Kaylene) Bern, Kansas City, MO; Michael Bern, Dike, IA; Dan (Tammy) Bern, Cedar Falls, IA; and daughter Kathryn (Judith) Bern, Seattle, WA.  Grandchildren Lori (Raul) Ruiz, Hudson, IA; Michelle Nelson, Mooresville, NC; Deborah Nelson, Waterloo, IA; Bobbi (Aaron) Shinn, Oskaloosa, IA; Miles (Lissa) Bern, Cedar Rapids, IA; Nick Bern, Des Moines, IA; Taylor (fiancé Nicole Ely) Bern, Prague, Czech Republic; Jamie Dorothy, Kansas City, MO; Jess (Leslie) Michaelsen, Kansas City, MO; and 14 great-grandchildren.  Her brother, Paul (Kay) Weiss, Reinbeck, IA; nieces Sue (Jerry) Green, Cedar Falls, IA; and Julie (Scott) Moeller, Cape Coral, FL, and many cousins and dear friends.
Ruth Ann is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; son, Ken; and great-grandson, Damon Nelson.
The family requests no flowers.  Memorials may be directed to the family.
Ruth Ann’s family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the entire staff of the Western Home Communities and of UnityPoint Hospice.
Ruth Ann was a very loving, caring, and hard-working woman.  She took joy in the little things, in nature’s beauty, watching the birds and listening to their songs, and life in general.  We learned so much from her and will miss her smile.

He attended school in Dike and was able to graduate early from Dike-New Hartford High School to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. He had been assigned to a 3d Battalion 8th Marines as a 0311 rifleman, as a PFC. Tragically, Tyler’s life was cut short at the tender age of 19 but his family was so proud of Tyler’s willingness to serve his country and his little sister Tessa, has and will always see Tyler as her hero.
Growing up, Tyler was as you might say, an animated kid. He loved to be the center of attention and he always lived at a 100 miles per hour! He was very theatrical and lived for Drama, lettering in high school; he was active in theater in high school (and was a part of almost every play!). He also was active in show and concert choir. To say Tyler was an ‘entertainer’, would be an understatement. He had a magnificent life force that would light up any room and brought so much joy and positivity to his family and friends, and quite honestly, anyone he encountered. Although his family and friends are heart broken that Tyler is gone, they want people to know that they were happy and grateful for the blessed 19 years they had with him. Tyler would not want people to be sad he is gone but remember the good times they shared with him and the memories they made. The countless stories of Tyler keep pouring in, and they realize the impact he had on people. He was a wonderful son, brother, friend and Marine, and he will be so dearly missed by those he leaves behind. “Fly High, Semper Fi, Tyler”.
Tyler leaves behind his parents Michael & Sara Cox of Dike and Kim Knight; brother Tanner (Maureen) Cox and sister Tessa Cox, both of Dike; grandparents Galen Cox of Dike, Teresa Miller, Mary Lou Knight and Daryl Magee. Ilene Ann Bernhardt - Unknown - July 12, 2019

Departed: 07/12/2019 (Dike)
Obituary Preview: Ilene Ann Bernhardt, 86, of Dike, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Visitation for Ilene will be held on Tuesday, July 16th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Abels Funeral & Cremation Service-Dike Chapel, 680 Main St., Dike, Iowa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at 10:30 AM at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck with Father David Kucera officiating. Immediately following Mass, the burial will be held at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Ilene was born on August 14, 1932, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred & Inez (Strom) Halvorson. She spent her childhood in Decorah with her family where she attended school and graduated high school. On September 19, 1953, Ilene was united in marriage to James “Jim” Bernhardt in Decorah. The couple were blessed with 4 children and raised their growing family in the communities of Decorah, Grinnell, Carroll, Harlan, Ida Grove, and in 1961, they settled into their home in Dike.
For many years, Ilene stayed home and raised her children and took care of the family home but in 1971, Ilene began her bank teller career at Iowa Savings Bank in Dike, retiring in 1996. After her retirement, Ilene volunteered at the Dike school cafeteria for many years.
Outside of work and home, Ilene was a faithful member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where she belonged to the Women’s Circle. Ilene had a servant’s heart! She was always willing to do anything, for anybody, at any time. She never spoke a bad word about anybody and saw the good in everything. Ilene enjoyed baking, her involvement with her church, watching the Lawrence Welk Show and Wheel of Fortune, dinners with family and friends, and of course, anything purple! She was also a Cubs fan, becoming one only by marriage, her family jokes! The one thing that brought the most joy to Ilene was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be terribly missed by her many family and special friends she leaves behind.
Ilene is survived by her children Jan (Bill) Duffy of Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Larry) Willms of Dike, Steve (Rhonda) Bernhardt of Shellsburg and Mary Bernhardt of Waterloo; 4 grandchildren Kevin (Laura) Willms, Jenny (Drew) Pederson, Brett Bernhardt and Noah (Gina) Shonka; great-grandchildren Matthew, Katherine and Caroline Willms and Gage Shonka; twin sister Ila (Ken) Wangsness of Allison; step-sister Lorna Neil of Waterloo; brothers-in-law Rich Bernhardt of Lititz, PA and Don (Norma) Bernhardt of O'Fallon, MO and many nieces and nephews. She rejoins in Heaven her parents; husband Jim; brother Hans Halvorson.

Departed: 06/08/2019 (Dike)
Obituary Preview: Richard “Dick” F. Woodley, age 82 of Dike, passed peacefully on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Creekside Living in Grundy Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, County Rd T55 (U Ave), Reinbeck. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Monday at the Abels Funeral and Cremation Service – Dike Chapel and continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
Richard was born November 27, 1936 at home in Doughterty, Iowa, son of Ray and Maggie Woodley.  He met the love of his life Nancy Hagge.  They were married on November 28, 1959 at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames, Iowa.
Richard loved Iowa and small town living.  He graduated from Hansell High School in 1955.  Growing up on a farm, he always had a great work ethic.  He worked briefly at Chapin Hardware in Hampton, Ia.
Dick initially attended the University of Iowa then graduated with a teaching degree from Mankato State.  He taught at Dike High School from 1961 through 1968.  He was a jack of all trades.  He also worked at Kaser Construction and sold mobile homes in Minnesota at Suburban Homes and  Northland Homes.  In 1969, he opened his Countryside Homes Sales east of Dike and later opened  second location in Waterloo.   He found he had a knack for selling and went on to sell  mobile homes, prebuilt homes, snowmobiles, and used cars.     He owned and operated Koehler Mobile Home Park in Conrad, Iowa.  Later in his career, he worked for the engineering firm AE Com (formerly Brice Petrides).  Dick attempted retirement many times.  After one of the said retirements,  he was employed by FEMA as part of the team that prepared and arranged for temporary housing for hundreds of displaced families after Hurricane Francis hit Florida in 2004.
Recanting fishing tales of fishing expeditions in Minnesota and Canada was a favorite pastime.   The flying bug bit Dick.  He obtained his private pilot’s license and instrument rating.  He even survived an airplane crash in the hills of Arkansas! He loved going to the EAA event in Oshkosh every July. While winters were spent in Sun City, Florida and summers in his cabin on Pike Bay in Minnesota, he was especially fond of living in his community in Dike Iowa for over 55 years.  He held a seat on the Dike School Board from 1974 to 1983.  He was a charter member of the Dike Lions Club.   He was a faithful member of St Gabriel’s Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck
Richard is survived by his wife whom he adored, Nancy; four children who inherited his cynical sense of humor, Cathy (Dan) Baker, Steve (Jennifer) Woodley, Susie (Ashley Beninga) Woodley, and Mark (Rachael) Woodley; 15 grandchildren who mostly amused him, Jessica, Sam (Tina), Mitchell (Katelyn), Jackson, Natalie, Hannah, Mallory, Anthony, Isaiah, Olivia, Lucy, Gwendlyn, Joshua, Evelyn and Cullen; and 3 great grandchildren Asher, Amelia and Claire, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Beverly Woodley, June Creese and one brother, Darrell “Bud” Woodley.

In 1999, Dewey & Carol moved to town in Dike, where they currently reside.
He was a member of the Iowa Pork Producers, was a 4-H leader and was on church council, where he also served as treasurer. Farming was the staple of Dewey’s life but above all, his family and spending time with them was the most important thing to him; his grandchildren especially! He was known as “Papa” to not only his grandchildren, but to many other children who knew him. On the Thursday night before his passing, the family was able to spend one last night having a family meal, and his family and grandchildren got in their last big hugs from “Papa.” Dewey was a selfless man, putting everyone before himself and will be missed dearly by his family and friends he leaves behind.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy, often including achievements, hobbies, and accomplishments.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist with writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include information about their interests, hobbies, or achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary for publication?

You can usually submit an obituary through the website of a local newspaper or online obituary platform. Some funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist with submitting the obituary on your behalf.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Online platforms may publish immediately, while print newspapers may have a delay of several days or weeks.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can also help alleviate the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or archives may also have physical copies of old newspapers that you can access.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died unexpectedly?

Be respectful and inclusive when writing an obituary for someone who identified as LGBTQ+. Use their preferred name and pronouns, and acknowledge their partner or spouse if applicable.
