Barbara A. Patruska - May 25, 1952 - March 13, 2023

Departed: 03/13/2023 (St. Johnsville)
Obituary Preview: ST. JOHNSVILLE – Miss Barbara A. Patruska, 70, currently of the Town of St. Johnsville, passed away unexpectedly, on Monday evening, March 13, 2023, at her private residence.
She was born on May 25, 1952, in Little Falls, son of the late Anthony A. and Gladys F. (Polinski) Patruska. She was a graduate of St. Johnsville School and went on to attend Pawelson Business Institute, Syracuse, New York, having received her Associate Degree. Barb’s faith was strengthened through St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in St. Johnsville and through the years she had worked at Palatine Dye and Felt Shoe. Most notably, she was employed for many years with Beech-Nut, Canajoharie, New York, where we remember her meticulous record keeping as well as complete balancing of the warehouse. Barb did not forget anything, a better memory than an elephant, so to speak. Barb was an icon in our community, many of us remembering her with a memory that leaves us a nice smile. Through the years, these memories are inclusive to her exceptional vicious ability to play cards and her love of heading to the Saratoga Race Track with her friend, Jack Laraway. She spoiled rotten Molly the dog!
All in all, Barb had a heart of gold. Let it be known throughout her existence she had not a bad word to say about anyone. This of course, unless she did not take her medicine! Contrary to all of her wonderful attributes, Barb was NOT a good driver. She loved loud music and most of all, Miss Abygail.
Her family she joins in heaven include her parents; and siblings, Donald, John, Gary, Mark and Tom.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a graveside service, commencing later this summer, at a time to be announced, at the St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Barb and all of her his family's care through the years have been placed in trust of Enea, Ciaccia & Applegate Funeral Directors (518) 568-2300. Barb made sure of this by preplanning her wishes well in advance.

J. Sally Steuding Thomson - October 28, 1933 - November 12, 2022

Departed: 11/12/2022 (St. Johnsville)
Obituary Preview: ST. JOHNSVILLE – J. Sally Steuding Thomson was born on a snowy Saturday, October 28, 1933, in Little Falls, New York. She was the daughter of Richard Ames Snell and his wife, Dorothy O’Brien Snell. On Saturday morning, November 12, 2022, at the age of 89, she died, in St. Johnsville, NY.
Sally was raised, along with her two sisters, Sue, and Cathy, on the family dairy farm on Mill Road, in St. Johnsville, NY. Summers were spent at the family camp “Suits Us”, on Canada Lake, in the southern Adirondacks. Sally first attended the one-room school next to the farm and graduated from St. Johnsville High School, in 1951. She then attended Utica Tech where she obtained a business administration degree and met her college sweetheart, Bill Steuding. They graduated together and were married, on August 27, 1955, in St. Johnsville. Bill and Sally made their first home in Kingston, New York, where their daughters Ellen and Martha were born. In 1960, they moved to Woodstock, New York. Their home reflected Sally’s creativity with decorating, full of antiques, colorful art and artifacts and always at least one cat. She was a talented seamstress and needle worker and that evidence showed in all of her homes. Sally created beautiful garden beds and always enjoyed sitting amongst the colorful blooms in her yard. She served as a member of the West Hurley Library Board of Directors and was active during the move to its new location. In 1982, she was widowed, when Bill died of cancer.
On November 8, 1987, Sally married Roy Thomson, at the West Point Officers’ Club. They relocated to Kinderhook, New York and resided there, for 15 years. Again, their home reflected her many talents and her gardens did as well. Sally devoted time to the Kinderhook Garden Club and the Columbia County Historical Society, making new friends in their new community. Upon Roy’s retirement, they moved to St. Johnsville, where Sally once again lived on Mill Road until her death. They purchased and renovated a beautiful home and enjoyed many happy years there together. She was active in the St. Johnsville Library Book Club and always attended the annual family reunions at Snell’s Bush Church, Manheim, New York. Sally was proud of her Mohawk Valley roots, being an 8th-generation direct descendant of the Palatine German Settlers, who arrived there in the early 1700s. While dementia robbed her of her memories, her family and friends have many. Sally will be remembered for her strong convictions, love of books, loath for cooking, joyous pride in her children’s accomplishments, beautiful needlework, colorful gardens and sparkly green eyes. She was a life-long learner who read the New York Times daily and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Empire State College in her 60s. Sally never turned down the chance to visit a museum, gallery, concert, play, lecture, or yoga practice, as long as it included a lunch out. Until the final months of her life, the world stopped daily at 5 in the afternoon for cocktails, tasty nibbles and hearty conversation.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Roy; and two daughters, Ellen Neilley and husband, Greg, of Francestown, NH and Martha Bilsback and husband, Woody, of Sabael, NY. Survivors also include her sister, Cathy Miles and husband, Ron, of St. Johnsville, NY; and her brother-in-law, Roger Williams, of Kennebunk, Maine. Several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. Three stepchildren and their families survive as well.
Sally will be greatly missed by her cherished friends Cathy Steffans, of Attalla, Alabama, Kathleen Doherty, of Edgewater, Florida and Kate Mack, of Woodstock, NY. Her family thanks all of those who have loved and supported Sally on her end-of-life journey. Your kindness and caring have meant so much to all of us.
Should you wish to, memorial donations may be sent to the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library, 19 Kingsbury Avenue, St. Johnsville, NY 13452 or Snell’s Bush Church, c/o SZT Reunion, Inc., P.O. Box 623, Little Falls, NY 13365.
To honor Sally’s beautiful life lived, we invite friends and family to join us for calling hours in her memory, on Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, in St. Johnsville, New York. At 12:30 p.m., at the funeral home, a Service of Remembrance will be held, led by longtime family friend, Dawn Lamphere. At the conclusion of the funeral home services, we will gather for a refreshing lunch at Beardslee Castle, from 2p.m. until 4p.m. A private family graveside service will take place at the Snell family plot, in West St. Johnsville Cemetery, later on, in the month of June, 2023.

She was born on October 1, 1942, in Nelliston, New York, to the late Annabelle Spaulding and Bernard Emery Sanders and also raised by the late Margaret Friest Sanders. She was the eldest of four children and grew up in Freysbush and Fort Plain.
She attended Hessville and Springfield schools and was employed as an operator for the General Telephone Company, in Canajoharie. After having children, herself, she opened her home to provide daycare for several children in the community.
Through the years, she found joy in spending time with her family, cooking, crocheting, piecing together puzzles, playing cards, vacationing and singing and dancing. She frequently attended dances in Fort Plain where the ‘Happy Valley Gang’ band played. It was there where she met the love of her life, Howard Sanford Mureness. They were joined in marriage on September 30, 1961.
Deanna was a dedicated Jehovah’s Witness for 49 years and shared her love and confidence in Bible promises with others.
She was a loyal wife, mother, gramma, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, who offered unconditional love, kindness and heartfelt hugs to anyone in her presence. She often said she was triple blessed by having a family who cared about her dearly.
She is survived by her five children: James Howard Mureness (Barbara), of Syracuse, Deborah Ann Crewell (Mark), of Canajoharie, Daniel Vincent Mureness (Kelly), of High Point, NC, Holly Lynne Folts (Rob) and Melissa Lee Skandera (Matt), of Palatine Bridge. She was blessed with what she called the joys of her life: fifteen grandchildren, who adored and admired her, Vincent, Sean, Jordan, Nicole, Zachary, Shayna, Cameron, Kyle, Amber, Aubrey, Sara, Caleb, Matt, Alexis and Brandon; twenty-one great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as Gramma Dee; her “Lil Sis”, Linda (Warren) Sheckells; and brothers, Bernard (Debbi) Sanders and Kenneth (Rhonda) Sanders; an aunt; several nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom she loved deeply.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband and parents.
Deanna would want to thank her ‘team of girls’: including her daughters; granddaughters; sister; her ‘second daughters’, Lydia and Naomi, who had a share in taking special care of her the past nine months; and to her ‘big brother”, Greg, for being kind and helpful.
Deanna will be deeply missed by all who knew her, until we meet again. We love you forever….so long.

Ruthann Evans - December 28, 1958 - November 06, 2022

Departed: 11/06/2022 (St. Johnsville)
Obituary Preview: ST. JOHNSVILLE – Ruthann Evans, age 63, who with her family moved to the St. Johnsville area in 1968, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on the Lord’s Day, Sunday morning, November 6, 2022. Her parents, Albert K. and Eva A. (Amy) Evans welcomed Ruthie into the world on December 28, 1958, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.
Ruthie attended schools in Pennsylvania and in St. Johnsville and then went on to become a certified nurse’s aide. Her passing occurred with her beloved family at her side, at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She received tender loving care there and her transition from this life ironically occurred within the same unit that she cared for so many throughout the years.
Ruthie was a popular staple in our community, always out and about and helping others, the most generous with her time and money. She was a faith filled member of the St. Johnsville United Methodist Church. We all remember her being so active in the St. Johnsville Community, working so hard, being up and down Main Street all day long, helping the elderly and with her mom and active with the St. Johnsville Fire Department, just like her dad. She was quite simply put a social butterfly and knew so many in the Village, up until she suffered a debilitating injury. Her deep rooted faith sustained her during this injury and her positive outlook allowed her to persevere. The accident did not hold her back. Ruthie, never tired of learning and education in the good of humanity, was always at the forefront for her livelihood. She did so much good for all of us and for others and her love for the New York Giants and her beautiful cat Bubbly was unending. It would be remiss for us not to smile during this most difficult time and fondly reflect upon the facts, especially that back in the day she loved to have a cold one!
Ruthann is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Eva Evans; her sisters, Janet Cornish and Karen Hogan; and her brothers, David Evans and Albert K. Evans, II.
Left to cherish her memories are her siblings: Elizabeth Biechy, of Fonda, Cindy (Gary) Becker, of Fonda, Freida (George) Lyons, of St. Johnsville and James P. (Cheri) Evans, of Lasselsville; and numerous loving cousins, nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
