Donald Osamu Yamamoto - June 15, 1959 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Seattle)
Obituary Preview: Donald Osamu Yamamoto was born on June 15, 1959, in Seattle, Washington to Tadashi and Tsuneko Yamamoto. Donald was the middle of three siblings, between his older sister, Grace, and his younger brother, Dick. Donald and his family grew up in the Rainier Valley, where he attended Brighton Elementary, Sharples Junior High, and Franklin High School, where he graduated in 1977. After high school, Donald earned his Associate of Arts degree from Seattle Central Community College.
Donald met his future wife, Jana (Ko) at his high school senior prom in 1977. Donald and Jana dated for 9 years before they married in 1986. The newlywed couple bought their own Rainier Valley home in 1986, where Donald took on remodeling projects in every part of the house throughout the rest of his life. Donald and Jana lost stillborn twins, Derrick and Matthew, in 1990, but were overjoyed to have Dillon in 1997. Dillon was Donald’s pride and joy, and while Donald rarely put his fatherly love into words, he more than showed it in his actions through family vacations, homemade school lunches, filled gas tanks and washed cars, taking Dillon to countless sports practices and games (sorry, refs), and so much more.
Donald worked for 30 years as a skilled and handy carpenter. He worked at Bush Woodcraft and then Ishimitsu & Sons until he retired in 2007. Donald’s attention to detail and high standards were evident in his professional work, projects around the house, and carpentry favors for friends and family. After retiring, Donald’s new jobs were taking care of Dillon, helping care for his father, Tadashi, until his death in 2009, and just recently, helping take care of his mother, Tsuneko, until her death in January 2024.
One of Donald’s many hobbies was enjoying the thrill of hunting for collectibles. Many friends and family members recall his legendary hunts for Beanie Babies and baseball cards, often waiting in long lines for hours to collect these valuable keepsakes. His collector’s attitude extended to collecting Seattle Mariners bobbleheads and patiently waiting for Mariners players’ autographs on trips to preseason Spring Trainings in Arizona.
Donald also loved playing and watching sports over the years. He was an avid bowler in his early years where he participated in the Thursday night men's league at Imperial Lanes. He was a dedicated Mariners fan, attending many games over the years, and made sure to watch Seahawks games every Sunday. He loved golf, highlighted by scoring a hole-in-one at the Gold Mountain Cascade course in 2016. Donald went on many golf trips with Jana and their friends, always making sure everyone followed the rules (even calling a penalty on Jana once!). He later took up pickleball and thoroughly enjoyed learning a new sport, connecting with pickleball friends, and, of course, the weekly lunches the group would enjoy.
Although his exterior was gruff and macho, those who knew Donald, knew that he was a softie at heart. He couldn’t walk past a table of Girl Scouts selling cookies without buying a box (or five). Donald was the most giving, thoughtful, and kind soul, who always knew how to make those around him laugh. Donald was a golden example of doing the little things for others, whether it was helping neighbors with yard work, helping friends move, or picking up your favorite food, just because he was in the area. He rarely sought recognition for his deeds and was always willing to help others without being asked simply because he cared and it was the right thing to do.
Many close to Donald knew of his recently developing health challenges, though not all knew their cause, which was his recently diagnosed Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA). Despite these challenges, Donald still proudly cared for his mother, Tsuneko, for eight hours on most days and stubbornly completed household projects, yard work, and errands.  At the end of a long day, he thoroughly looked forward to his newfound joy, watching Korean dramas.
On March 29th, 2024, Donald collapsed (fittingly, at a Mariners game) and was taken to the ICU at Swedish Cherry Hill.  One week later, on April 5, 2024, Donald passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Donald’s kind, thoughtful, selfless, goofy spirit will be missed dearly by so many.
Donald is survived by his wife Jana, son Dillon, siblings Grace (Pete) and Dick (Susan), nieces and nephews Trevor (Marisa), Troy (Aimee), Karina (Chad), Malia, Kobe & Kai, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces, and great-nephews.  Donald is preceded in death by sons Matthew & Derrick, parents Tadashi & Tsuneko, and nephew Tyler.  Special thanks to Dr. Ann Chen and the nurses in the Cardiovascular ICU at Swedish Cherry Hill for their compassionate care and support.

Departed: 02/12/2024 (Seattle)
Obituary Preview: Aida Kozu passed away peacefully on February 12, 2024 in Seattle, WA at the age of 104. She was born in Portland, OR to Gensaku and Yoneko (Iwahashi) Somekawa. As the fifth of six children and the youngest girl, family was an important part of her life. Her older siblings were Arthur (married to Emi), Emiko (married to Howard Nomura), George (married to Akiko), Ayako (married to Sam Kozu), and her younger brother was Carl (married to Mari).
Aida was educated at Fernwood Elementary School, Grant High School, and a secretarial school in Portland. She was active in sports and traveled with her basketball team throughout the Pacific Northwest. In 1942, Aida and her family members who were living in Portland were incarcerated in three different relocation centers. She left Minidoka Relocation Center in 1943 after she got a secretarial position in a Cincinnati church. There, by chance, she re-met Yeichi Kozu. They had previously met in 1940, when both were in the wedding party of her sister Aya and Yeichi’s cousin, Sam Kozu. In 1942 Yeichi had volunteered to serve in the Army and was stationed at Ft. Thomas, KY, where he and Aida were married on March 4, 1944.
After the war, they moved from Chicago to Seattle, where she worked in various civil service clerical positions at the municipal and federal levels. Outside of work, she enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, golfing, and traveling. Her recipes were and remain very popular amongst her family; especially her desserts including ice water chocolate cake, pineapple upside cake, and her pies with their flaky crusts. She faithfully attended sporting events and other performances, always cheering for her family! During her later years, she kept her mind sharp with daily crossword puzzles and delighted in visits from her great grandsons.
She is survived by her three children: John (married to Darlene Eng-Kozu) of Seattle, Patricia of New York City, and Michael of Boston; four grandchildren: Ryan (married to Marina Furuta) and Nolan Kozu of Seattle, Alisa Gragert of San Marcos Sierras, Argentina, and Joy Kozu of Boston; three great grandsons: Tao and Kai Opizzo of Argentina and Joshua Kozu of Seattle; her sister-in-law Mary Kozu married to Yeichi’s brother George); and many nieces and nephews.

Tsuneko Yamamoto - October 28, 1930 - January 12, 2024

Departed: 01/12/2024 (Seattle)
Obituary Preview: Tsuneko (Fukuda) Yamamoto was born on October 28, 1930 in Kobe, Japan to Seizo and Kachi Fukuda. Tsuneko was the oldest of four children, including one brother, Yasuhiro, and two half-brothers, Masahiro and Yoshihiro. Her mother, Kachi, died when Tsuneko was just two years old, after which the family was raised by Tsuneko's stepmother, Hisako. In her youth, Tsuneko enjoyed spending time with friends and being a member of her school tennis and swimming teams. During her teenage years, Tsuneko and her family were greatly affected
by the bombings of Japan during World War II. Tsuneko and her family escaped bombings in Kobe in March 1945, as they were visiting another city in Japan at the time. However, the family lost their home and medicinal factory as a result of the damages from the war. Soon after, Tsuneko and family moved to Nara, Japan.
Tsuneko met the love of her life, Tadashi Yamamoto, while he was in the United States Army. They met at a bar while Tadashi was on R&R from the Army and it was love at first sight. The couple got married in Japan on November 8th, 1955, and soon after moved to Seattle, Washington, where much of Tadashi's family resided. Shortly after, Tsuneko and Tadashi had their three children (Grace in 1957, Donald in 1959, and Dick in 1960) and moved into their South Seattle home that Tsuneko and Tadashi would live in until their deaths.
Tsuneko worked numerous jobs throughout her lifetime, including with a local jewelry company, working in horticulture at the Columbia Greenhouse, as well as working in janitorial services at the Rainier Bank Tower while still babysitting her grandson Trevor full-time during the day. Tsuneko was also proud to receive her US Naturalization when her children were young. Tsuneko was passionate about her various hobbies, including needlework, cooking, and growing houseplants. She loved sewing, knitting, and crocheting different items such as doilies, vests, and even outfits that she proudly wore. Tsuneko was also incredibly skilled at Bunka shishu (Japanese punch embroidery), meticulously crafting dozens of beautiful and detailed pieces that were often hung up around her home or gifted to loved ones. Tsuneko earned her mastery certificate in Bunka shishu, demonstrating her skill and dedication for her craft. She loved cooking for her family and for social gatherings up until her final days. In the final period of her life, Tsuneko enjoyed cooking recipes she would find in magazines or online with her son, Donald, and grandson, Kai. She was very proud of her beloved orange clivia plants that lined her dining room, getting so excited whenever she saw them bloom.
Tsuneko enjoyed traveling back to Japan, often for a month at a time, in order to visit her brother Yasuhiro and other lifelong friends, shop for Japanese goods, and see Japanese comedy shows and sumo tournaments she couldn't see in the United States. Her independence allowed her to travel alone even into her 80's, and she always looked forward to her next trip to Japan.
Tsuneko was a strong fighter. Despite being diagnosed with stomach cancer in March 2022 and being given a prognosis of having 3-6 months to live, Tsuneko battled for an amazing 22 more months. During this time, Tsuneko fought to celebrate two birthdays, many family picnics, and fun holiday gatherings, including the most recent New Year's festivities with the Yamamoto family. Tsuneko passed away peacefully in her home on January 12, 2024. She was upbeat, strong, and caring all the way up until the final few days before her passing and will be missed dearly by many.
Tsuneko, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, is survived by her children Grace (Pete) Tsuchikawa, Donald (Jana) Yamamoto, and Dick (Susan) Yamamoto; grandchildren Trevor (Marisa) and Troy (Aimee Hye) Tsuchikawa, Dillon Yamamoto, Malia, Kobe, and Kai Yamamoto; great-grandchildren Taylor, Tanna, Tori, and Taryn Tsuchikawa and Theo and Tani Tsuchikawa; and brother Yasuhiro Fukuda, who still resides in Japan today. Tsuneko is preceded in death by her husband Tadashi Yamamoto, grandchildren Tyler Tsuchikawa and Matthew and Derrick Yamamoto, and half-brothers Masahiro and Yoshihiro Fukuda. - Care Entrusted to Emmick Family Funeral Services Lake View -

Mary Woo - November 27, 1929 - December 22, 2023

Departed: 12/22/2023 (Seattle)
Obituary Preview: Mary Woo (nee Wong) passed away peacefully at her home of 62 years on December 22, 2023, at the age of 94 with family at her side.
Mary was born November 27, 1929 in Seattle where her early working years were spent as a beautician at various shops before getting married on her birthday in 1954.  She spent the ensuing years at home raising her children, and later helping care for her grandchildren.  She enjoyed many things including shopping, visiting family and friends, going out and eating anything sweet, and playing pickleball with friends before it was cool!  She was willing to try camping at Kalaloch and fishing at Neah Bay, but liked traveling much more with her husband to many places--Hawaii, California, Arizona, Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Australia were some of the adventures near and far.  In her later years, she enjoyed time at the casino with her lucky frogs and playing the White Lion slots as the most recent favorite.  Mom resided at the Merrill Gardens Renton Centre for a short time, and we are grateful to the aunties, uncles, staff, and other residents at the community for their care and companionship before her final trip home.
In addition to her parents Dut Wong and Woo Shee, she was also preceded in death by her husband Jerry, and siblings Daisy Owyang, Wong brothers Robert, Jerry, Phillip, Albert, and Richard, and Josh Suehiro.  She leaves behind her children and spouses Steven Woo (Wendy); Jeri-Marie Honda (Jeff); Pamela Haruta (Stanley); and Scott Woo (Lillian) as well as her 6 grandchildren Alison Haruta, Michael Haruta, Delanie Honda, Tara Woo, Lucas Woo, and Colten Woo.  She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Sandra Wong, Pauline Chinn, Margery Woo, and Carol Suehiro along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
We will miss her many childhood stories and the many “mom-wisdoms” passed along during her time including:  Because I said so (in response to “why?”);  It’s better than a hot stick in your eye (if we felt disappointment getting something);  Put an egg in your shoe and beat it (when she wanted one to leave); Some people are just happiest when they’re complaining (dealing with difficult people); and the more recent Hey, I’m 94 years old so I must be doing something right! (in response to critiques on her diet).   Her smiling presence will be missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held in March with a private burial to be held in the spring.  The family asks that any remembrances be made to the organization or cause of your choice, and that you be sure to hug your loved ones often. - Care Entrusted to Emmick Family Funeral Services Lake View -

Barbara Kazuye Matsudaira - January 19, 1927 - September 25, 2023

Departed: 09/25/2023 (Seattle)
Obituary Preview: Barbara (Kurimura) was born January 19, 1927 in Seattle, WA.  She was second to the youngest of seven children – five brothers, one sister.
She attended Garfield High School as a freshman until she was relocated to the Japanese internment camp, Camp Harmony (the site of what now is the Puyallup Fairgrounds) during WWII in 1942 when she was 15 years old.  This is where she met the one and only love of her life, Michael Matsudaira.  It was love at first sight!  A year later Michael was relocated – Barbara realized her true love for him at this point.  She was also moved to another camp in Minidoka, Idaho where she remained until 1945.  She graduated as senior class Vice President and Mardi Grass Princess from Hunt High School while in camp.
After reconnecting with the love of her life, Barbara Kurimura married T-Sgt. Michael Matsudaira on June 29th 1946.  She was the first to marry into the Matsudaira clan.  They were married for 38 years until his passing in 1984.  Barbara is survived by her three children (Dennis, Kathie, and Shari), six grandchildren (Brandon, Taryn, Ryan, Tyler, Bryant, and Lindsey) and six great-grandchildren (Mason, Tia, Cameron, Rumi, Luke, and Raizo).
Barbara worked as a secretary at the Providence Hospital Nursing School before taking time to be a stay-at-home mom, and later returned to the workforce in the china/silver department at Friedlander & Sons.
Barbara and Michael were avid league bowlers for many years at Imperial Lanes.  She was an amazing cook and was always quite good at mastering whatever craft or hobby she took up (knitting, sewing, quilting).  She enjoyed watching sports (Seattle Supersonics and Seattle Mariners), shopping, taking walks, and having lunch with friends, many of whom she has known for over 70 years.
She absolutely loved dogs, especially her beloved cocker spaniel Sheina who was her faithful companion for many years.  She loved her sweets - anything dark chocolate, especially Frangos and SEE’s lollipops.  Her love of sweets was so strong that it carried onto the next three generations.
One thing that we can all agree on is just how sweet she truly was, full of laughter and kindness.
Barbara Kazuye Matsudaira passed peacefully in her sleep on September 25th 2023.  She can finally be reunited with the love of her life.. her match made in Heaven. - Care Entrusted to Emmick Family Funeral Services Lake View -

For 28 years Ada Lou owned an advertising and public relations agency in Seattle. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and acquaintances of a person's passing, while also providing an opportunity to share their life story, accomplishments, and legacy. They can also help facilitate the grieving process by allowing people to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. However, some funeral homes and newspapers may offer assistance or provide templates to make the process easier.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include a photo, quotes, or personal anecdotes to make it more personalized.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for around 150-200 words for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I include humor or personal stories in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also a celebration of the person's life. Including humorous anecdotes or personal stories can help capture their personality and make the obituary more engaging.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and achievements.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can! Some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to have control over how they're remembered. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on your life and accomplishments.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes! Many online platforms, such as Legacy.com or FuneralHomes.com, allow you to publish an obituary for free or for a small fee. You can also share it on social media or create a memorial website.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Typically, it takes anywhere from a few hours to several days for an obituary to appear in print or online.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication, but this depends on the newspaper or platform's policies. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting to avoid errors.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and additional features such as photos or online links. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for a traditional newspaper obituary.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial services in the obituary as a way to honor their loved one's memory.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or websites like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank.com. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to historical records and archives.

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

A well-written obituary can serve as a great starting point for a eulogy. However, consider expanding on the information and adding more personal anecdotes to make it more engaging and memorable.

What is the purpose of an obituary photo?

The photo serves as a visual representation of the person being honored. Choose a recent photo that captures their personality and spirit.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to the obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or philosophy.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the person's life or death that you'd rather not disclose publicly, it's best to omit them from the obituary. Focus on sharing positive aspects of their life and legacy.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Yes! Even if someone passed away many years ago, you can still write and publish an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary serves as a way to acknowledge and validate the loss, while also providing a sense of closure. It allows friends and family to come together to mourn and celebrate the person's life.

Can I use an obituary as a way to share memories and stories?

Absolutely! An obituary is a great opportunity to share memories and stories about the person's life. You can also include anecdotes from friends and family members to make it more personal.
