Edwin Seth Mabry - Unknown - April 21, 2022

Departed: 04/21/2022 (Texas City)
Obituary Preview: Edwin Seth Mabry died just shy of his 94th birthday on April 21, 2022. Born in Houston -- a direct descendant of the founding Allen Brothers -- he was reared in Kemah and built his legacy as a long time civic leader and attorney in Texas City. Following his graduation from Webster High School where he played football and tuba in the band, he briefly attended Texas A&M before enlisting in the Army just before the end of WW II; he was then sent home to await further orders. After not hearing from the Army for several months, he joined the Marine Corps and was, unbeknownst to him (and the Army), serving in two branches of the military at the same time. Later in life, he joined the Texas National Guard as a commissioned officer. He attended Sam Houston State Teachers College after the Marines and attained his degree in music. He was a HS band director in Mabank, Missouri City and Webster before becoming the first band director at the new Clear Creek HS in the 1950s. Nothing gave him more pleasure than being a band director, but with two boys, he ultimately decided more financially rewarding pursuits were necessary. Ed worked in the HR department for several years at Texas City Refining (TCR) and met the great love of his life, beloved local history teacher Meriworth McMillan at the Galveston Little Theatre when he played the lead role in The Crucible. He later presaged his legal career by playing Clarence Darrow in Inherit The Wind, and would go on to star in productions at College of the Mainland. Soon after they married, he was working by day and traveling to Houston nightly to attend classes at South Texas College of Law, returning home to study well into the wee hours. He passed the Bar exam with the highest score in his South Texas class and TCR made him their in-house counsel. He was eventually recruited to the local law firm of Nugent and Lilienstern before leaving to form his own practice with several partners over 50 years, including his friend and former band student Charlie Herbeck. The firm that eventually became Mabry, Herbeck and Roberts is known today as Roberts, Johnson and Cain, now led by his protege and friend, Phil Roberts. He attained a golden reputation as a small town lawyer with high ethics, able to go up against the big city firms in Houston and New York, particularly in matters of labor law; he practiced throughout the Southeast United States, but always served the needs of his Texas City neighbors. Both Ed and Meriworth believed deeply in service to the community, lessons he learned well from his parents, Frank and Fay Mabry who were legendary civic leaders in Kemah. He was proud of his service to Rotary where he was President, District Governor and a Paul Harris Fellow. Among the projects he helped shepherd was the construction of the Rotary Band Pavilion in Nessler Park. In the 70s, Ed was named Texas City's Citizen of the Year and served as president of the Chamber of Commerce. He lent his legal talents generously, serving pro bono to many groups such as his beloved Memorial Lutheran Church, the Marine Corps League where he prepared wills and legal documents for troops being deployed to areas of conflict, Hospice, and Boy Scouts of America to name a few. He played pivotal roles in the creation of the College of the Mainland and the Carbide Employees Credit Union (now ACU), and many other businesses and institutions in Galveston County. He and Meriworth endowed the Edwin S. and Meriworth Mabry Professorship of History at Mary Hardin Baylor University, her alma mater. During his rich and full life, he attended The Masters, numerous international Rotary conventions, flew on the Concorde, played in dance bands and municipal orchestras, led the church choir and community choir, and traveled around the world with Meriworth. He was grateful for his long life, his many friends and golfing buddies, and being able to enjoy the adventures of his sons and other family members. Survivors include his sons Paul Mabry and wife Barbara of Houston, and Clifford Allen Mabry and wife Anne of Houston; grandson Robert Augustus Mabry of St. Petersburg, Florida; great-grandson Jule Seth Mabry of League City; and sister Jacqueline Love of Pasadena. He was predeceased by his wife of over 54 years, Meriworth McMillan Mabry; grandson Wayne Allen Mabry; and brother Jack Mabry. Services will be held at noon Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at Memorial Lutheran Church in Texas City, 2021 29th St. N. A luncheon at the church will follow; visitation prior to the service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Information on suggested memorial donations will be posted on the website of Emken-Linton Funeral Home. Jimmie Lin Dimitri - May 05, 1944 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Texas City)
Obituary Preview: Jimmie Lin Dimitri, 77, of Texas City passed away April 5, 2022, at Solidago Health and Rehabilitation in Texas City.
Viewing will be held at 5 p.m. April 21, 2022, at Emken-Linton Funeral Home in Texas City. Services will follow at 6 p.m. April 21, 2022, at Emken-Linton.
Jimmie was born May 5, 1944, to Jimmie and Ella (Moses) Dimitri in Beeville, Texas. The oldest of four children, he graduated from Texas City High School in 1962 and joined the U.S. Navy in March 1966. He served until March 1968, including a station in Vietnam.
After leaving the Navy and returning to Texas City, Jimmie married Connie Lynn Winters Oct. 24, 1969. They had five children together, plus numerous foster children.
Jimmie had great charisma, with seemingly endless amounts of friends and acquaintances across the Texas City-La Marque area and beyond. It was uncommon for him to go to the store or venture out anywhere without someone he knew coming up to him and striking up a conversation, which Jimmie always welcomed and gleefully engaged.
Jimmie loved sports, spending many afternoons watching the Astros and countless college football games. A fine baseball player himself as a young man, Jimmie later shared his talents coaching youth teams.
Through his work driving around town as a lineman for Texas-New Mexico Power, and his deep involvement in the La Marque Girls Softball Association as a coach and league official, Jimmie touched the lives of many members of the community in a positive way — particularly the many girls he coached and mentored over the years. This included his four daughters, all of whom learned the game under their daddy’s watchful eye. His legacy made such an impact that many years after he had stopped coaching, the organization honored him by instituting the Jimmie Dimitri Award.
When his son Dale played football for the La Marque Tigers, Jimmie was a regular fixture at games and practices. All the players knew to look for his red company truck afterward because he always brought ice water and Gatorade, which was dispensed from a cooler on his truck for all the thirsty kids after their workout in the hot Texas sun.
Jimmie's full life can almost be broken down into two phases: before his aneurysm in his 50s and after. The younger Jimmie was definitely an alpha male — athletic and strong with a hearty constitution and quick temper, someone others definitely did not want to get on the wrong side of. Still, Jimmie was also a caring, sensitive man who always had his family's best interests at heart and worked very hard in his job, side endeavors, home life and recreational pursuits. Jimmie often took his vacation days all at once in the summer, usually four weeks straight in July. These vacations — highly anticipated all year by his children — often entailed a week in the Hill Country, followed by a week at the Landa Resort in New Braunfels, then at the family's former lake house on Lake Livingston for a week, and finally, to the outskirts of Dallas-Fort Worth for a week at Aunt Nina's farmhouse.
Although cherished memories were created during these yearly adventures, Jimmie didn't have to wait for vacation to have a good time. Jimmie, his family and their friends spent many days in the backyard hosting barbecues, games, pool parties, and more.
When he wasn’t working, Jimmie never ran out of projects to do around the house and yard. Weekends at the family lake house in Waterwood always included a work project at the property before the fun could begin — something his teenage children may not have appreciated at the time. But it was all worth it when the fun started — swimming at the country club pool, cutting trails through the woods, fishing off the marina dock, and riding our motor scooters all day and night through winding country roads amid the towering pine trees.
After his stroke, Jimmie overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. He emerged from a coma, followed by intense rehab in which he essentially learned to talk, eat and walk again. The stroke zapped his balance, speech and slowed him down a great deal. Still, he kept getting stronger through the years, recovering much of what he had lost. Some may say he became a kinder, gentler version of his old self — but a good bit of his old fiery nature remained.
Before long, Jimmie had returned to his old ways of staying busy with household projects. He built an outdoor bathroom at every house where he and Connie lived, city permits be damned. Jimmie kept active during this phase of his life, always helping his children when they needed it, as well as helping to raise grandchildren and a host of foster kids, nephews, and nieces. In his later years, he became a dedicated member of Temple Baptist Church in Texas City.
Jimmie’s true influence cannot be known. One can only guess how far his impact reached. It is said that good men must die, but death cannot kill their names. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie and Ella Dimitri; in-laws, Bill and Betty Winters; sister Kathy Dimitri; brother Pete Dimitri; grandson Noah Dimitri; and brother-in-law Gordon Gates.
Survivors include his devoted wife of over 50 years, Connie Dimitri; son Dale Dimitri and fiancée Erinn Callahan; daughters Nicole Dimitri, Cheryl Dimitri, Rachael Dimitri, and Robin Agnew; son-in-law Zachary Agnew; brother Teddy Dimitri; sister-in-law Debbie Gates; brother-in-law Mike Winters; grandsons Matthew Dimitri, Jerod Ruschenberg, and Kyle Agnew; granddaughters Chloe Dimitri, Nevaeh Verret, Cameron Ruschenberg, Peyton Agnew, Natalie Dimitri, and Salone Daniels; and numerous nieces, nephews, and foster children.
Honorary pallbearers are Wesley Hoke, William Michael Winters, Jr., Dean Robertson, Zachary Agnew, Moose Meadows and Dennis Marcum.

Bill was born on August 26, 1934 in New London, Texas to William Wesley Peace and Ruby Inez (Ramsey) Peace.  He was the 4th of 5 children, 2 of whom died in childhood.  He graduated from Gladewater High School in 1952 where he lettered in football, basketball and won State level discus and shotput competitions for his team.  After graduation, Bill attended Abilene Christian University on a football scholarship.  After attending ACU for 2 years, he decided to join the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1958.
After leaving the Air Force, Bill continued his education at Stephen F. State College where he met his beloved wife, Sue. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry and went on to earn his M.S. in Chemistry from University of Houston as well as doing post-graduate work at Fairleigh-Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey and LSU in Baton Rouge, qualifying him to teach physics.
Bill taught in TCISD from 1961-1970, then became a faculty member at College of the Mainland.  His tenure at College of the Mainland began in a Chemistry classroom but he quickly moved into the role of Dean of the Math and Science Department, where he served many years and developed both the Nursing and Cosmetology Programs that are still educating students at College of the Mainland today.  Prior to his retirement in 2001, Bill became the College Registrar.  The students and faculty at C.O.M. enriched his life immensely and he was so proud to be a part of the College of the Mainland faculty.  He was passionate about education and would go to any length to see students succeed.

He had a huge heart and would help anyone he met, in any way he could.  If anyone ever needed him, he was a phone call away always ready to help and that gave him such joy.  He had a zest for life and was a go-getter with more projects than hours in the day.  He enriched our lives and will be sorely missed.

Robin Hecht Deutsch - February 04, 1966 - February 08, 2022

Departed: 02/08/2022 (Texas City)
Obituary Preview: Robin Hecht Deutsch passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in Houston, Texas at age 56.  Robin was almost unselfish to a fault.  She cared more about other people than herself.  If she committed to something, she gave her all whether it was fundraising, building a business, or listening and advising her kids.
Robin was most proud of her three sons—Alex, Aaron, and Adam.  They were the light of her life and brought her boundless joy.  Robin was happiest when she was at home with her boys.  She kept a sign on her desk that said, “I am a Mom.  What’s your superpower?”  As a Mother, she was a real super hero.
Robin’s life partner was her beloved husband Lance.  Together, they built a thriving business, Deutsch Fine Jewelry, which came to be regarded as Houston’s premier jewelry business.  Robin was a regular presence at the store, working along side Lance.  Robin and Lance loved to attend their boys’ sporting events, travel, fly fish together, and spend evenings at home.  Robin loved to cook . . . by telling Lance what to order.
Robin loved dogs more than she loved most people.  Her golden retrievers— Amigo and Chico —were treated like her children.  She was a tireless advocate for the protection of dogs.  She served on the Board of PetSet, and was recently honored by Citizens for Animal Protection at the annual gala.
Robin grew up in Houston.  She went to St. John’s School and Memorial High School and the University of Arizona—where two of her sons now go. She was active in various civic causes, such as Hero’s for Children.  Robin was an active member of the Jewish community in Houston.  She was known as a fiercely loyal friend.
Robin is survived by her husband, Lance, her sons, Alex, Aaron, and Adam, her parents, Punkin and Walter Hecht, and her brother, Mark Hecht.  Robin was the granddaughter of the late Kitty and Alex Deutser and Mae and Edmund Hecht, and the daughter-in-law of Marcia and Russell Deutsch.
The family asks that anyone wishing to make a contribution in Robin’s honor contribute to PetSet Houston. Memorial services will be held in the Bender Chapel at the Congregation Beth Yeshurun Cemetery, 7445 Awty School Rd., Houston, Texas 77055 on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 2:30PM.  For those who cannot make it in person, the service will be live-streamed from the Beth Yeshurun website for the Bender Memorial Chapel. https://venue.streamspot.com/f8d04b5b
