James 'Jim' Vincent McGreal - February 14, 1943 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Elmhurst)
Obituary Preview: James (Jim) Vincent McGreal passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024. A Valentine’s baby, Jim was born on February 14, 1943, in Chicago, IL, and was a devoted husband to his loving wife, the late Rita Marie (Clancy), for 56 years. They passed away fifty days apart. Together they raised five children: Wendy McGreal (Cheryl Leoni), Brian (Martha) McGreal, Lori McGreal, Matthew McGreal (Colleen Condon), and Johnpaul (Amy) McGreal. He was a cherished grandpa to Megan, Emma, Madison, Allison, Amanda, Camryn, Jack, Joseph, Molly, Ramona, and Patrick. He was a dear brother to Carol (the late Roger) Burke, Barbara (the late James) Phelan, Mary Jean (Michael) Nardulli, Donald (Angela) McGreal, Thomas (Darlene) McGreal, and David (Christine) McGreal, as well as fond uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a great friend to many. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Marie (Clancy) McGreal; his parents, James Joseph and Angeline Veronica (Treacy) McGreal; his brother-in-law, Roger Burke; his brother-in-law, James Phelan; as well as his precious infant granddaughter, Kayla McGreal.
Jim grew up on the south side of Chicago, the second of seven children and, as he liked to say, “mom’s favorite”. With his mom being a teacher, education was always held in high esteem, and any slacking off was certainly not tolerated. He was a proud graduate of Leo High School and still gathered with classmates attending many alumni events into his later years. Jim was young for his grade but prided himself on consistently putting in hard work to be the best he could be which not only included his academics but his passion for sports as well. A favorite quote was, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” Jim was an accomplished runner in high school, a tradition his sons and several of his granddaughters carried on. Jim attended John Carroll University in Ohio where he graduated with a degree in business and several lifelong friends.
Jim cared deeply for his wife and family. Jim was a successful Purchasing Manager, heading that department at several significant companies including Skil, Sunbeam, and D.A. Stuart. He also earned his MBA while working full-time. His late nights studying or catching up on work did not interfere with raising his kids. In addition, he coached basketball at Visitation Catholic School for years, as well as little league baseball, including the powerhouse Orange Crush and seemingly unbeatable Elmhurst A’s. There were lists of jobs to be done left on the kitchen table on Saturday mornings and it was assumed, of course, that those jobs would be completed AND that each child would take 500 shots in the backyard basketball court before hanging out with friends. The court was lovingly built by Jim and his friends for the kids and hours of coaching happened on that court. Jim also enjoyed playing sports himself as an adult and was the pitcher on Visitation’s Men’s Softball Team aptly named, “The Oops”. In his retirement years, Jim “enjoyed” golfing, going to the Courts, and having lunch with friends. Some of Jim’s fondest memories were times spent with his best friends and their families at Big Sand Lake in Wisconsin.
In Elmhurst, Jim could often be found fixing something in the house, fiddling with some project in the garage, or repairing numerous baseball mitts on the couch. Many a happy hour was spent by Jim watching baseball and football games from the freshly painted deck overlooking Butterfield Park. Jim’s values of hard work, love for family, and passion for Chuck Berry and Little Richard, will forever be missed.

Joyce Joanne Meyer - November 26, 1933 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Elmhurst)
Obituary Preview: Joyce J. Meyer, age 90, passed away peacefully at home, on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024.
She was born in Chicago on November 26, 1933 and was raised by her loving parents Axel and Clara Rydberg. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Charles J. Meyer on July, 12, 1952, and was joyfully married for 42 years.
Loving mother of Peter (Deborah), Thomas (Joann), Elizabeth (Juan) Valdez, and the late Kimberly (Harold) Werth.
Cherished grandmother (Lita) of Joyanne (Joe), Alex, Henry (Mary), Marty, Jakob, Sidney, Callahan, and Maya.
Great grandmother of Madilyn and Mariella.
Joyce worked in various jobs helping her husband pay for college and life's needs. Her domestic skills were a bit lacking and “she wasn't able to sew a stitch,” but while working for Singer Sewing Machines she out sold all the other sewing machine sales people, even the men. A great feat at that time.
After her four children were born, she began her most pivotal job working at a preschool for special needs kids. With no degree and little experience, she had found her calling. She began her college career and finished her undergraduate degree in 3 years. She started working as a full time special education teacher. While teaching full time and raising her family she continued taking classes to earn her Master's degree.
Teaching and caring for the least of us is a common theme in Joyce’s life. She excelled in special education (teaching those with behavioral disorders) because of her patience, kindness, firmness and because she treated everyone with respect and empathy. Joyce was a strong woman because she had the courage to stand up for and care for children and people who needed her most. Other teachers recommended that she keep the classroom doors locked to avoid having the children escape but Joyce refused knowing that kids develop self worth by being trusted.
Joyce retired in 1994 around the same time that her dear husband Chuck lost his long battle with cancer. She moved to Elmhurst, IL, and worked at the Elmhurst Public Library. This was a perfect fit for Joyce as she was a voracious reader. Joyce also volunteered for the clothing center at the First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst. Later in life Joyce spent many happy years with her good friend and close companion, the late Bob Keller.
Joyce was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. In her later years with her eyesight failing, unable to read the hymnal, she could still sing every verse of any hymn.
A Celebration of Life service will be held April 13, 2024 at 1pm at the First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst.

Born February 3, 1921, Mary was the eldest of seven and raised in Newark, Ohio. Her family were parishioners at Blessed Sacrament church where she attended grade school. Mary often recalled the hardships of the Depression Era when her father had to move them all to "the farm" property to support his family, yet she said she never felt deprived of anything. Mary attended St. Francis de Sales High School where she met the love of her life, Jack Deardurff. After his service in WWII they married August 25, 1945.
Mary dedicated her life to her husband and six children. She lived out her unwavering respect for all life by not only nurturing her own family but by offering love, education and support to women in their pregnancies as a tireless 25 year volunteer of Birthright of Joliet.
Mary was an avid organic gardener long before it was a common household word and she saw the goodness and beauty of all life as a gift from God. From her bounteous flower beds to the worms that fed her soil she marveled at the wonder and order of all of God's creation. Mary moved to Elmhurst in 2007 to be closer to children and grandchildren. She could be seen mowing her own lawn well into her 90's. In Mary's final years she held her ever-growing family close to her heart and prayed daily that they would know, love and trust Jesus
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church, 779 S. York St., Elmhurst. Her burial will be on Thursday, April 4, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Newark, Ohio.

Her greatest love was of animals! Her guinea pig girls, Willow Rose & Phoebe Latte already miss listening to their “mom’s” favorite music (on repeat!) and watching her perfect countless TikToks. Sasha Grace and Marshmallow will miss her taking them on run/walks, rough housing and receiving one of her amazing head rubs. Reilyn often rescued injured (and sometimes not) wild animals and did the best she could to nurse them back to health. Reilyn was a very sensitive soul that felt compassion for nature and all people. She tried very hard to help others understand how deeply she felt all things.
Reilyn was excited to graduate from Churchville Middle School this spring and begin her freshman year at York High School in the fall. She will no doubt be watching and cheering on her friends as they continue on their earthly journey, content with how hers unfolded.
While short, Reilyn’s life was well lived with no regrets. We have been honored to know her and will strive to keep her legacy of compassion going strong.
Reilyn’s final gift to the world was that of organ donation. We know she would be proud of the opportunity to save the lives of others, bringing joy and hope to their families.
Reilyn is preceded in death by her great grandparents George & Bernice Belitz, Anna & Malcolm Ramsay, Robert W. & Irene Reed, Marisa & Emerson Salzmann as well as her grandfather, Robert W. Reed, whom she shared her initials with in tribute. They along with many great aunts, great uncles, rescue animals and pets no doubt met Reilyn with loving arms as she left us to return home.
Services to honor Reilyn’s life will be held as a visitation on Wednesday, March 6th at the Elmhurst Community Funeral Home - The Ahlgrim Chapel, 567 South Spring Road, Elmhurst, from 2pm to 8pm, open to all.

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Elmhurst)
Obituary Preview: Rita Marie McGreal, nee Clancy, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2024. Born on May 24, 1945, in Chicago, IL, Rita was a devoted wife to her loving husband James for 56 years. Together they raised five children: Wendy McGreal (Cheryl Leoni), Brian (Martha) McGreal, Lori McGreal, Matthew McGreal (Colleen Condon), and Johnpaul (Amy) McGreal. She was a cherished grandmother to Megan, Emma, Madison, Allison, Amanda, Camryn, Jack, Joseph, Molly, Ramona, and Patrick; aunt of many nieces and nephews, and great friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry Patrick Clancy and Elizabeth Anne (Byrne) Clancy, her brother William (Barb) Lichneckert and her sister Elizabeth (Art) Krause as well as her precious infant granddaughter Kayla McGreal.
Rita loved her husband and children deeply and worked hard to provide a good life for them. In the early years of young married life, Rita devoted her life to her children. She could be found patiently playing with them, baking with them (often irish soda bread), and as a passionate reader, always reading to them. Rita made every holiday and birthday special for her family, a tradition still carried on by each of her children today. Rita transitioned from being a stay-at-home mom to working at Jewel for many years. She subsequently worked in the library at Elmhurst College (now University), which enabled her to provide a college education for her children and where she received her own college degree. She went on to earn her Masters degree in Library Science, propelling her career to heading the information centers for financial services firms, Van Kampen Investments and McDonnell Investments. Post retirement, she volunteered at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital’s Pink Elephant Shop.
Rita was a devout Catholic, who sent her children to Visitation Catholic School and always attended Mass on Sundays, followed by a trip to Dunkin Donuts. Rita devoted a good part of her life to Visitation. She was involved with the Council of Catholic Women, was an eucharistic minister and an adorer at Visitation’s Adoration Chapel. Some of her fondest memories were times spent with friends and family at Big Sand Lake in Wisconsin. In Elmhurst, Rita could often be found on her beloved deck overlooking Butterfield Park with a cup of tea reading, doing crossword puzzles, or watching the many little league baseball games. Rita’s gentle ways, love for her family, and blue Irish eyes, always smiling, will forever be missed.
