Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help facilitate communication among family and friends, and provide a sense of closure during a difficult time.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or condolences.

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements in the obituary. This can help make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they are remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do so during a difficult time.

Is it okay to include humor in an obituary?

What if I need to correct an error in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request a correction. They will typically work with you to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions or credits.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?
