Crawford Monroe Kennedy - Unknown - March 06, 2023

Departed: 03/06/2023 (Wetumpka)
Obituary Preview: Crawford Monroe Kennedy, Jr.
Crawford was born May 2, 1936, in Kingston, Georgia to Avis and Crawford Kennedy, Sr. He grew up in Atlanta’s West End and attended Brown High School, where he was a highly regarded All State athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. After learning from the newspaper that his football scholarship to Auburn University was revoked for a recruiting violation of receiving a suit from a booster, he played for the University of Miami before graduating from the University of Georgia. He received a Masters Degree from The University of North Carolina and a postgraduate degree from Auburn University.
Crawford met his wife, Phyllis Kelly Kennedy, through mutual friends in 1962. They were married in 1963 and divorced 18 years later. Then in 2000, they remarried – sending out an invitation that their “trial separation just didn’t work out”. They celebrated 41 total years of marriage on Saturday, March the 4th.
Crawford was a stellar football coach and math teacher, serving at his alma mater, Brown High School in Atlanta, Druid Hills High School, Avondale High School, and St. Pius X High School. He was a mastermind on the field and was an amazing mentor to many young men. His 1976 team won the state championship. When Crawford retired from DeKalb County, he had more wins than any coach in the history of the county, a title that lasted several decades.
Following his retirement and remarriage to Phyllis, Crawford moved from Decatur, GA to Titus, Alabama, where he was active at Trinity Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry and as chair of the finance committee. He was an avid golfer and poker player and was in demand as a bridge player later in life.
His grandchildren, Sally and Jake, were his pride and joy – and he would do anything for them, including taking them on trips to Costa Rica, Italy, Disney World and Gulf Shores for many wonderful Thanksgivings with extended family. He and Phyllis also made sure to have everything those two and their friends wanted at the popular “Kennedy Resort” on Lake Jordan, where now grown-up friends still like to visit.
In August of 2020, Crawford was involved in a horrific accident that required a life flight to UAB’s trauma ICU where he was treated for 3 weeks. He spent time in rehab before returning to Titus, where he was lovingly cared for by Phyllis and a dedicated team of caregivers. Though he worked hard, he never recovered from the accident. After a recent lengthy stay in the hospital, Crawdad entered hospice care. He died peacefully at home on March 6, following a lovely weekend surrounded by those who loved him most.
He was preceded in death by his son Bradford Cobb Kennedy and his parents. Survivors include his wife Phyllis, daughter Leah Vaughan (Jeff) of Decatur, GA., granddaughter Sally Vaughan of Memphis, TN and grandson Jake Vaughan of Atlanta, GA; his sister Sarah Kennedy Miklas (Ed) of Kingston, GA and nephews Cliff Miklas and Curtis Miklas of Houston, TX.
Crawford’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 1 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 5375 U.S. Highway 231, Wetumpka, AL. The family will greet visitors at the church from 11:30-12:45 where a light lunch will be served.
The family asks that memorial gifts be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 1235, Wetumpka, AL 36092; the Humane Shelter of Elmore County, 255 Central Plank Road, Wetumpka, AL 36092 or Titus Volunteer Fire Department, 5879 Titus Road, Titus, AL 36080 or Samaritan’s Purse.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay their respects.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, and other relevant information.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members or close friends of the deceased, but they can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to write a well-crafted obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased in the obituary. This can help to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you will typically need to contact the newspaper's obituary department directly. They will provide you with guidelines on how to format the notice and what information is required.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In most cases, it is possible to make corrections or edits to an obituary after it has been published. However, this may depend on the specific policies of the newspaper or online platform where it was published.

How long does an obituary stay online?

The length of time an obituary remains online varies depending on the platform or website where it was published. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived or removed after a certain period.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help to celebrate the person's life and personality.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be searched for specific names or dates.

Can I reuse an existing obituary?

If you need to republish an obituary in multiple locations or at a later date, it's generally acceptable to reuse an existing notice. However, be sure to check with each publication or platform for their specific policies on reusing content.

What is the typical cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper, online platform, or funeral home. Some publications may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for longer notices.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personalization to an obituary. Just be sure to verify copyright permissions if necessary.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?
