Obituary Preview: Brian David Gibson, 64, of Ankeny died Monday April 15, 2024. He was born on December 2, 1959 in Burlington, the son of David and Sandra (Hofmann) Gibson.
He was a 1978 graduate of New London High School, where he was class valedictorian. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids and earned a BA in Economics in 1982. He did graduate work at Iowa State University, where he pursued a doctorate degree in Economics.
He worked at Principal Real Estate Investors in Des Moines. He also was an official scorer for the Iowa Cubs from 2002-2011. He spent many years officiating high school football and basketball games, as well as umpiring baseball games in the Des Moines area.
In his younger years, he enjoyed playing men’s fastpitch softball for the Lowell Rattlers. He enjoyed playing golf and always looked forward to the annual mini-golf tournament with the NLPPPA (New London Professional Putt-Putt Association). He also enjoyed playing fantasy baseball.
He is survived by his mother, Sandra (Hofmann) Dunn of Marion; two brothers, Greg Gibson of Burlington and Steve (Chris) Gibson of Tiffin; one sister, Julie Decker of Marion; step-sister Machele MacDowell of Nashville, Tennessee; step-brother Ken (Beth) Dunn of Dyersburg, Tennessee; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Sr. and Margaret Joan Wynn Curry. He was a 1976 graduate of Danville High School. On May 14, 1977 he married Carol Hunt at Harmony Bible Church, Danville.
Bill worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for fifteen years. He enjoyed riding his Harley; fishing, hunting, and duck hunting; and loved all animals, especially his coon dogs. Time spent with his grandchildren was special to Bill.
Besides his wife Carol of Lowell, Bill is survived by his mother Margaret Curry of Burlington; children, Braydon (Jessica) Curry of West Point, Tristan (Jonathon) Schmit of Germantown, Tennessee, and Emily Curry of Lowell; nine grandchildren with a great-grandchild on the way; and a bonus son Jason (Elizabeth) Spearman. He was preceded in death by his father and his sister Brenda Curry.

She was born January 4, 1960 in Primghar, Iowa to Norm and Dolores Mohr Laue. She married Greg Manske on November 20, 1981 in Paullina, Iowa; they later divorced. On July 5, 2018 she married Paul Weinstock in Marengo, Iowa.
She was a 1978 graduate of Paullina High School where she participated in every girls sport; then graduated in 1982 from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science degree in social work. She worked as a social worker at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington and the Des Moines County Juvenile Court System. Through her love of social work, she hosted several foster children over the years. In 1998 Joni opened Any Wear Apparel which she owned and operated in Mt. Pleasant and Burlington for twenty-five years. In 2021 she opened ETC Gift Shop in Mt. Pleasant until retiring in 2024 because of declining health.
She attended New London Christian Church. She enjoyed traveling; watching all sports, especially basketball and track; attending all of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities; and especially loved her one-on-one time with her grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter Megan (Kory) Winsor of Atkins, Iowa; son Mark Manske of Mt. Pleasant; sister Julie (Randy) Paulsen of Paulina, Iowa; brother Steve (Lorie) Laue of Castle Rock, Colorado; three grandchildren, Blaire, Dane and Conrad Winsor; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Kathleen was born January 6, 1928 in Danville, she was the daughter of Fred D. and Bertha F. Parrott Mathews. She was a 1946 graduate of Danville High School Danville and attended the Congregational Church of Danville. Kathleen was a legal secretary for Caddes Law Firm in Denver for almost 50 years. She enjoyed reading, walking, and loved to travel.  She was a member of Chapter EV, P.E.O. in New London.
Kathleen is survived by her nieces and nephews: Pat (J.D.) Stucker and Tom (Becky) Wagner of Danville; John (Bev) Wagner of Amana; and Mike Mathews, Norm (Susie) Mathews, and Judy (Charlie) Webb, all of Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Ralph, Wayne, and Wendell Mathews; sister Cyrene Wagner; nephews Donald and Fred Mathews; and her stepmother Isabelle Mathews.
According to her wishes, Kathleen has been cremated and graveside services will be held in Jagger Cemetery at a later time and date. Virginia Lois Oberman - April 05, 1935 - March 08, 2024

Obituary Preview: Virginia Lois Oberman, 88, of Yarmouth, died Friday, March 8, 2024, at The Klein Center, West Burlington. She was born April 5, 1935 in Burlington to Charles and Florine June Gabeline Michaels; the third of four girls. On July 31, 1955 she married Carroll I. Oberman in Pleasant Grove. Together they had two children, Mike and Patti Jo. She was a dedicated farm wife to Carroll for sixty-eight years.
Lois was a 1953 graduate of Yarmouth High School. She then graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with a degree in elementary education and taught thirty-nine years for the Mediapolis school district; most of those years in the Yarmouth building. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and made a huge impact on all of her elementary students, continuing to follow her students through high school activities and even college. She was a faithful “fan in the stands” for many years supporting the Bulldogs and Bullettes. One cannot forget her dedication to the Iowa Hawkeyes and her beloved Tom Brady.
She was a member of the E.C. Blackman Chapter, No. 306 Eastern Star. She and Carroll ran the Republican caucus for Washington Township for many years and she was asked to work the elections as well.
Lois is survived by her husband Carroll; son Mike (Sonia) Oberman of Mediapolis; daughter Patti Jo (Duane) Patton of Burlington, and their families; sister Mary (Don) Beckman of Burlington; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Marilyn Japsen and Laurel Lukens.
Visitation for Mrs. Oberman will begin at noon on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 – 6:30 pm.The funeral service will be held at 10:00 Friday, March 15, at the Yarmouth School, Yarmouth, Iowa with Rev. Tracey Burgus officiating. Friends are invited back to the school for a luncheon following the burial at Pleasant Grove North Cemetery. The family requests casual attire be worn representing the black and orange Mediapolis Bulldogs or black and gold Iowa Hawkeyes.

Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen Hunger (White) of Washington, Iowa passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 3, 2024. She had just celebrated her 76th birthday. She was born February 28, 1948 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Boyd DeWitt and Marianne May (Atwood) White. Mary enjoyed her childhood with her loving family living in What Cheer, Manchester and West Burlington, Iowa. She graduated from West Burlington High School in 1966.
On June 26,1966, she married Ned William Hunger of Mt. Union, Iowa in the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, Iowa. Following Ned’s service in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, they started farming in Mt. Union, Iowa. After joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1975, Ned and Mary, along with their children, were sealed together as a family for time and all eternity. Mary enjoyed being a homemaker and creating an environment for her six children to feel supported, protected, unified, and loved. Her life centered around service to her family, friends, community, and church.
After raising their children and retiring from farming in the Winfield / Mt. Union area, Ned and Mary relocated to the Iowa City Area and then to Washington, Iowa. Mary loved the role of grandma. She often played games, watched all types of school events, and loved having everyone together for family gatherings. She always served in her church and enjoyed helping others understand their great potential as children of God. She taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ both in her words and actions. She consistently exercised faith, expressed hope, and showed charity to all. Mary compassionately welcomed many into her family. Mary is a great wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Boyd DeWitt White -1993 (71) and Marianne May White (Atwood) - 2011 (93). She is survived by her husband of 57 years Ned William Hunger, Washington, Iowa; children Russell Willam Hunger (Melanie), Washington, Iowa; Neal Michael Hunger (Shannon), Iowa City, Iowa; Dennis Wade Hunger, Ankeny, Iowa; Gretchen Suzanne Travis (Brett), Clinton, Utah; Bryan Thomas Hunger (Angela), Fairfield, Iowa; and Megan Christine Tryon (Joshua), Washington, Iowa; twenty-four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mary is also survived by her siblings Marty Ross (Don), Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Betty Wollam (Bud), Burlington, Iowa; and David White (Marilynn), Murfreesboro, Tennessee; sister-in-law Arnette Hunger, Mt. Union, Iowa; and seven nephews and nieces and their families.
The family would like to acknowledge the overwhelming and heartfelt support of so many family members and friends at this tender time. They are also grateful for the many health care professionals involved and the care provided.
Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday, March 15, 2024 at Elliott Chapel, New London with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The funeral service for Mrs. Hunger will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, March 16, 2024 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Chapel, 570 Dublin Dr, Iowa City, IA 52246. The family will greet friends before the service from 9:00 – 10:00 AM.
A private graveside service will follow funeral services where Mary will be buried at Trinity Cemetery in Mt. Union, Iowa.

She was born on Good Friday, April 19, 1946 in Mt. Pleasant to Delbert Lewis and Irene V. Hoakison Corey. On January 4, 1969, during a -9 degree snowstorm, she married Kenneth L. McAllister at the Mt. Union United Methodist Church.
She was a 1964 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and in 1968 earned her teacher’s certificate from University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She taught one year in Bloomington, Minnesota and two years at Harlan Elementary in Mt. Pleasant before leaving teaching to become a homemaker and farm wife. Mrs. McAllister was a member of the Mt. Union United Methodist Church; United Methodist Women; taught Sunday School for many years; served as Sunday School superintendent; and helped organize Vacation Bible School. She was an amazing prayer warrior. Wanda was a TTT member; 4-H leader and served on the extension council and as fair superintendent for fifteen years. She volunteered with MOPS, especially the food pantry; was a leader in obtaining a grant for All Hands Day Care; and was a recipient of the Governor’s Volunteer Award. Wanda was an avid reader; enjoyed writing; and her favorite thing was playing games at family gatherings. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and children.
She is survived by her husband; daughter Michelle (Shawn) Pezley of Cedar Falls; sons Mike (Teri) McAllister of Pleasant Hill and Matt (Donna) McAllister of Bourbonnais, Illinois; four grandchildren, Megan and John Pezley, and Cooper and Zoey McAllister; one brother Wendell (Vicki) Corey of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Robert Dean King - October 10, 1933 - February 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: Robert Dean King was called home on February 3, 2024, at 8:09p.m. Bob resided in Rogers, Arkansas, but was born and raised as a proud Iowan.
Bob was born on October 10, 1933, in Salem, Iowa, to George Marion (Pat) King and Gladys Rebecca White King. He was one of 12 siblings in a very tight-knit family. In 1949, the King family relocated to Fairfield, IA, where Bob graduated from Fairfield high school in 1951.
Bob enlisted in the Air Force in 1952 and remained on active duty until 1954 having attained the rank of Senior Master Sargent. He was a flight engineer and a flight instructor for the C-141 and C-5A Starlifter transport aircraft. Bob was active during the Vietnam War where he flew missions into hostile territories on a regular basis.
Bob married Veda Maxine Cox of Birmingham, Iowa on September 13, 1953. Bob and Maxine raised their three children during most of his enlistment. Ron, Doug and Krista were given experiences of a lifetime by living on numerous Air Force Bases which included Sioux City, Iowa; France; England; Spokane, Washington; Biloxi, Mississippi; South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; San Bernardino, California; and Altus, Oklahoma.
Bob retired from the United States Air Force in 1975. Bob, Maxine and Krista moved to Milton, Iowa after his retirement. Bob owned and operated the King Insurance Agency for 15 years. During this time in Milton, Bob and Maxine were happy spending time with family. In 1988 the King Insurance Agency was sold, and Bob and Maxine moved to Rogers, Arkansas. Bob resided there until his death.
Bob is preceded in death by his loving wife Maxine King of the home and his parents, Marion and Gladys King from Mt. Pleasant Iowa. Bob is also preceded in death by his precious daughter-in-law Cathy King along with brothers; Rex King from Webster City, Iowa; Charles King, from Milton, Iowa; William King, from Florida; James King from Muscatine and Mt. Sterling, Iowa; and Merlin King from Boulder, CO; and sisters; Estyl Breazeale from Iowa City, IA; Katherine Ross from Hillsboro, IA; Joanne King from Fairfield, IA; Marilyn King from Salem, IA; and Linda Cameron from Quincy, IL.
Bob is survived by one sister, Patricia Jean Nicol and her husband Bernard Nicol of Wallace, North Carolina. Bob also left behind son Ron King, daughter-in-law Terri King of Sand Springs, OK, granddaughter Hannah Roberts and spouse Will Roberts and great grandchildren London and Liam Roberts of Stillwater, Ok. Bob also leaves behind son Doug King of Benton, AR, Dillon King and great granddaughter Ella King of Benton Arkansas, Bob is also survived by grandson Ryan King of Benton Arkansas. Bob is also survived by daughter Krista King and Valerie Benken. He leaves behind a very large contingency of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
No services are planned at this time. Donations to the Salem Cemetery are encouraged in lieu of flowers.

LaVelle Oscar Hibbs - June 17, 1929 - January 28, 2024

Obituary Preview: LaVelle Oscar Hibbs, 94, of New London, died Sunday, January 28, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born June 17, 1929 in Sheridan, Missouri, the son of Leonardis Oscar and Elva Edna Lantz Hibbs.
LaVelle was a 1947 graduate of Sheridan High School. Immediately after graduation, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Marines, taking his basic training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served as a Clerical Typist in Honolulu, Hawaii from November 1947 until November 1949, returning to Camp Pendelton, California. He was honorably discharged as a Sargeant after five years of service. On February 20, 1966, he married Berdita Mae Mosbey in Trenton, Missouri. He retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, and for 38 years worked at H and R Block during tax season. . He was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, was treasurer of the New London Lions Club, member of the New London VFW Post #7641 and Burge Cemetery Board, Dollars for Scholars, and Dover Museum. LaVelle loved his family, sipping coffee and Coors Banquet and a smoke, Casey’s, Old Threshers, fires, his Ford Ranger, hot weather and talking about the weather, visiting with anyone anywhere, and selling wreathes for the Lions Club.
LaVelle is survived by his wife Berdita; daughters LaVita Hibbs and Berdelle (Scott) Severson of New London; stepson Mike (Lori) Jarvis of Franklin; daughters Paulette, Michelle, Brenda and Connie; son Mark; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings and three step-sons.

On March 23, 1985 he married Teresa Marie Wilson in New London; she died February 26, 2023.
He worked at Burlington Basket Company for over twenty years, then at O’Reillys Auto Parts in Burlington for the past several years. Steve enjoyed fishing; going to Geode; NASCAR races; and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Chicago Bears. He was very artistic and had a great sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family, especially his kids and grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his mother of New London; two sons, Christopher (Amber) Voyles of New London and Jordan (Alexandra) Voyles of Burlington; two daughters, Stephanie (Dan) Housh of Mt. Pleasant and Abigail Voyles of Mediapolis; six grandchildren; one brother John (Heather) Voyles of Blakesburg, Iowa; and four sisters, Cindy (Curt) Watson, Sharon (Scott) Barron, Karen (Tim) Conrad, and Denise (Russ) Wolfe, all of Mt. Pleasant; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, his wife, and nephew Ethan Conrad.

Paul was born on May 2, 1937 in Burlington, Iowa to Eugene and Mildred (Schmeiser) Moore, and was raised on the family’s farm in rural Danville, IA, where he learned many life skills and the value of hard work. Paul was a 1955 graduate of Danville High School, a graduate of Burlington Junior College (now Southeastern Community College) and Iowa Wesleyan College/University; playing baseball and basketball in high school and college.
Paul married Judy Butler on April 12, 1959. They had three children, and were foster parents to six girls. They later divorced. He met Nancy Elliott at an Escondido, CA, church singles group, they married on May 4, 1981.
Paul worked at Hy-Vee grocery store, for Grinnell Mutual Insurance, and in the offices of Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, IA. In the early 1960’s through the IAAP he was one of the first government employees sent to California to be trained in computer programming. Paul worked at Collins Radio Company (now Rockwell Collins) in Cedar Rapids. For the majority of his career, Paul worked for Ralston Purina in grocery products, and later in their division of Van Camp Seafood including a temporary assignment at Van Camp’s cannery on Terminal Island (Los Angeles County, CA). During his career, Van Camp maintained offices both in St. Louis and San Diego, with Paul and his family living several years in both locations. Paul was involved mainly in inventory control while at Van Camp in San Diego and he made many trips to canneries in Puerto Rico and American Samoa.
Paul was a wonderful gardener, grew gorgeous roses, was an avid sports fan, with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, the Denver Broncos, and the Iowa college teams being among his favorites. Paul thoroughly enjoyed all his Danville High School class reunions including an Alaskan cruise with 14 classmates and their spouses. After his retirement in San Diego, he lived in Sun City, AZ where he continued playing softball several times per week. Paul & Nancy moved to Colorado in 2001. Paul became active in the Elks’ Lodges and truly enjoyed serving others including managing appreciation meals for first responders and benefits for those in need. He held several offices: Secretary, Treasurer, Trustee, Exalted Ruler (2x), and Leading Knight.
Paul was God-loving with strong faith, he was kind and generous. He was a great mentor, had a great sense of humor, and a servant’s heart. Paul was happy-go-lucky and so much more. He would say “Never settle for less, when you can have Moore” and with Paul, you definitely got more. He will be greatly missed and always loved.
Paul is survived by his wife Nancy, two sons, Mike and Jeff Moore, both of Escondido, CA; daughter Pastor Kathy Moore of New London, IA; stepsons Robert (Kathy) Elliott of Brighton, CO; and Jim (Earleene) Elliott of Elk Grove, CA. Also surviving are his sisters Jan Moore-Ecker (Jim Ecker) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Mary Moore of Ft. Madison, IA; and sister-in-law Norma Anderson of Ramona, CA. There are five surviving grandchildren: Kenzie Higdon of New London, IA; Brendan Higdon of Burlington, IA; Christa (Gabe) Render, Melba, ID; Rebekah (Josh) Rose, Nampa, ID; and Brittany (Stephan del Rose) de la Rosa of Sacramento, CA; 8 great-grandchildren; plus, nieces and nephews: Sonya (Brian) Welch, Ben Ecker, Dawn Schuldt, Dana (John) Leahy, Darcy (Fred) Oellien, Phyllis Kelly, Ed (Michelle) Anderson, and Lori Anderson. Survivors include many great nieces, nephews, and cousins residing in Iowa, Hawaii, and other states. Paul is also survived and missed by his two kitties, Millie and Mimi, whom he dearly loved.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, daughter-in-law Lois Moore of Escondido, CA; grandson, Mike Elliott of Longmont, CO; brothers-in-law John Schuldt of Ft. Madison, IA and Bill Anderson of Ramona, CA; and many aunts and uncles.

But what he really enjoyed the most was any time spent with Diane and his family; he loved his children and adored his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son Adam (Samantha) Gabeline and daughter Alexandra (Ryan) Menke, both of Danville; Papa to five grandchildren, Adrianna, Tate, Blake, Noah and Addison; brothers Mike Gabeline of Yarmouth, and Dan (Amy) Gabeline, who was not only his brother, but his partner and best friend; one sister Teri (Jeff) Wilkerson of Yarmouth; nieces and nephews; his dogs Glacier and Ruger; and a host of friends.
