Martin Fidencio Ruiz - September 27, 1971 - April 21, 2022

Departed: 04/21/2022 (Elgin)
Obituary Preview: Martin “SHARK” Fidencio Ruiz, 50, of Cedar Creek, formerly of Bastrop, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022.  Martin was born at Brackenridge Hospital, on September 27, 1971 to Yolanda Ruiz and Raymond Medina, Sr. Martin grew up in Stoney Point, he then moved to Bastrop where he attended Bastrop high school.  After receiving his G.E.D., attended school to become a Certified Dental Assistant.  He ultimately found a career he truly enjoyed as a school bus driver for Bastrop ISD, where he worked from 2004 until 2010.  He then began working with M.V transportation, where he drove the bus for Capital Metro in Austin.
Martin was the oldest of eight children; while growing up, all his siblings thought he was the strongest man in the world and were sure he would become a professional wrestler, but Martin always had other plans. He was the man of the house at a very young age and helped his mother raise his youngest siblings. Everyone knew Martin was a momma’s boy, never wanting to leave the nest until he got married and had children of his own, including being a father figure to his step-children.  In 2012, Martin became a single father, raising his three daughters alone; ensuring they always had everything they needed.  Martin never hesitated to go above and beyond for his children; he dedicated his life to working and being a dad.  Becoming a grandfather was his proudest moment and wanted to be the best “Jampaw” out there.
He enjoyed dancing and going out with his Tia, Janie. He loved to play pool and blasting heavy metal music in his room. He was a huge Dallas Cowboy and Texas Longhorn Football fan.  He also enjoyed watching wrestling and Nascar.  However, his favorite and most memorable times were spent with his daughters and grandbabies, and taking his mom to eat at the Chinese Dragon on his days off.
In 2018, Martin was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, which he was determined not to let slow him down!  He continued to work and take care of his family while he battled cancer for four long years.  In his final days, he was surrounded by family and close friends whom he loved dearly.  So when you’re feeling down, just think of Martin’s big smile, the crazy stories he would tell, with the assurance that he is no longer in pain.
Martin was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Raymond Ruiz.  He is survived by his mother, Yolanda Ruiz; his father, Raymond Medina Sr.; his three daughters Selina, Antonia, and Rosalinda; his three grandchildren, Esperanza, Alexander, and Natalia; his seven siblings Gabriel Jr, Rose, Selma, George and wife Joann, Nancy, Joe, and Blac and wife Erica; his partner, Debbie and her four children and one grandchild; 22 nieces and nephews; seven great nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family and dear friends.
A very special thank you to Martin’s workers union for raising money to help out with services. Deborah Gray, Barbara Williams, Jonathan D miller, Ms. Flo, Linda D, Roberta Alvarado, Michael Stewart, Mr. Young, Kim Connell and to Miss Shirley thank you so much for everything you did to help out and for being an amazing friend to Martin.  Thank you to everyone who donated to the GoFundMe and to our dear friends who came and personally donate to his services.
Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home, Thursday, April 28th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.  Interment will be private.

Nellie Marciel Reyes - January 24, 1933 - April 15, 2022

Departed: 04/15/2022 (Elgin)
Obituary Preview: Nellie Reyes was born on January 24, 1933, and peacefully transitioned to her eternal home on April 15, 2022, with family by her side. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lucio, her sons, Marty & Luciano, Jr., and her sweet daughter-in-law, Virginia. Her memories & storytelling will be passed on by her children: Frank, Tracy, Danny (Tammy), Hope (Toni), her grandchildren: Angela, Brian, Tomas (Karissa), Danielle, DawnAnne, Ariana, Cygney, Rita (Erik), Shane (Julie), Matthew and Chris, great grandchildren: Korban, Aniya, Elijah, Barbra, Isabella, Tomas, Erikah, Emerie, Mya, Clover, Levi, and Drew.
She is also survived by her brother, Robert Sr., sisters-in-law, Rosie, and Dolores; her “Golden Girl” sisters, Olivia, Stella, Mary and a host of extended family and friends.
Nellie was a force of nature who loved her little community of Nukaty. She was an active part of getting the neighborhood streets paved with one street being named Human Opportunities because she persevered in being part of the programs that LBJ offered. Sometimes just plain stubbornness helped her achieve goals and making calls to anyone who would listen. She could just as easily call the county sheriff if kids were misbehaving or ask if you wanted something to eat when you visited. The neighborhood kids knew her as Miss Nellie and knew when it was time for either her snow cones or tamales. The Davis family, that she loved as her own, was an integral part of her life in NuKaty, including a scolding if needed.
Nellie volunteered many, many years at the East Rural Community Center. She assumed her responsibilities three times a week to fulfill her duty as cook, bingo supply buyer, planning shopping trips “with the seniors” or just knowing to have the coffee made. She became famous for selling hamburgers for a grand $1.25. Customers came from beyond Manor for the “best burgers in town”.  Mom took great pride in her contributions to the youth and senior groups.
Mom knew how to have fun. Many others have shared memories of past dance outings at the lake or just raising a glass of bourbon with music from Manuel Donley, Vicente Fernandez, or Ray Price in the background. She continued living a full life and thoroughly enjoyed going to Vegas or nearby casinos with family and close friends.
Family and Friends will gather at Elgin Funeral Home for Visitation, Wednesday, April 20th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM with Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM.  Interment will be private.

Mary Edith Gerodetti - September 08, 1927 - March 31, 2022

Departed: 03/31/2022 (Elgin)
Obituary Preview: Mary Edith Gerodetti September 8th,1927 - March 31st, 2022 Beloved wife and mother
Mary Edith was born to Christine and Arthur Johnson in San Antonio, Texas - the first of their four children. Her childhood was in no small part spent helping with the family bakery business and the care of her younger siblings. She met the love of her life, Atillio Gerodetti, in high school and their marriage bound them together for over six decades. They were blessed with four daughters - Johanna, Mary Helen, Nancy, and Juliana. Mary Edith was devoted to her children, their spouses, and later her grandchildren. No sacrifice ever seemed too great for her. She loved and guided us throughout her life sharing each joy, accomplishment, and sorrow. Most importantly she taught us to pursue and cherish our own dreams, to embrace life and all it's beauties. At the most tragic moment in our family's life - the untimely death of her beloved daughter and our sister Nancy - she was our anchor.  She guided us through a storm of grief and ultimately brought us safely to a place of peace.
Despite great sorrow, Mary Edith remained exuberant about life. She adored all things artistic with her greatest love being the opera. We have wonderful memories of her packed suitcases and beautiful clothes as she flew from coast to coast or took the bus to Houston to experience yet another operatic performance. When she wasn't attending an opera, she devoted much effort to the Tuesday Music Club in San Antonio. We will never forget her yearly dance recitals replete with amazing costumes. We affectionately nicknamed her troupe "the Dancing Divas" and never failed to be entertained by their efforts. But do not assume that Mary Edith was always a whirlwind of activity. She equally loved the peace and quiet of South Texas with our father. She shared his passion for that remote spot and we all have fond memories of the two of them hiking on their ranch near Reagan Wells and hunting at the Donnell ranch.
People were drawn to Mary Edith her entire life. Her cadre of friends seemed truly endless to us. In her final years as she was cared for first by Julie and then by Johanna, she continued to endear herself to all around her. She managed to gather a most loving group of caretakers in Elgin to help her on the final leg of her life's journey. In the end, it was the simple things that brought her the most peace and happiness - a beautiful sunset, the first flowers of spring and the return of the hummingbirds, geese and ducks swimming on the pond, chickens clucking in the yard, purring cats and protective dogs, gentle hands, long hugs, and sweet kisses. She will always be a beacon of love for each of us as we continue on our own journeys through life - ever guiding and protecting for she can never truly leave us while she lives in our hearts. We pray for gentler times and the healing of our sorrow. May Mary Edith now rest in peace.
A Christian Mass will be conducted at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Manor, Wednesday, April 6th at 10:00 AM with Father Henry, presiding.  The Christian Burial will be on Thursday, April 7th at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas at 2:00 PM.

As many of the young men of Elgin, Arthur went to work at Elgin Butler Brick Company upon graduation.  He was proven to be a hard-working young man and after about sixty faithful years, he retired.
Arthur Ray was united in marriage to Lorine Thomas and to this union five children were born, Donald Ray, Ulander Janet, Lee Morris, Michael Bernard, and Kenneth Paul.
In 1967, Arthur met and was united in Holy Matrimony to Alice Cook and her three-year daughter, Diann.
Arthur Ray was a God-fearing, soft spoken, quiet man, who loved his family. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends and spoiling grandbabies and there were no boundaries for the great grands.
On March 25, 2022, Mr. Arthur Ray heard the voice of Jesus and left his earthly tabernacle.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Ollie, and Pearlie Russell, three brother: Alfred, O. L., and Walter Lee Russell; seven sisters: Thelma Henderson, Perrine Hall, Lee Ethel Howard, Doris Clay, Bernice Hunter, Willie B Craney, and Elsie M. Penson; and one son, Lee Morris Russell.  Arthur led a rewarding and active life as he desired.
Mr. Arthur Ray Russell leaves in God’s hands to cherish his legacy: his devoted wife of fifty-five years, Alice C. Russell of Bastrop, three sons: Donald Ray Russell and his wife, Diane of Porterville, California, Michael Bernard Russell of Austin, and Kenneth Paul Russell of Elgin; two daughters: Ulander Janet Russell of San Leandro, California; and Diann C. and her husband, Bradley Deere of Bastrop; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren, one sister, Verna L. Henderson of Atlanta, Georgia; a multitude of nieces and nephews spanning to four to five generations, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Arthur Ray Russell will lie in state at Elgin Funeral Home, Friday, April 1st from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM.  A Home Going Celebration will be conducted at Elgin Funeral Home, Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00 AM with Pastor Phillip Alexander presiding.  Interment will be at Sayers Cemetery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, or other details related to the passing.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by family members, close friends, or a funeral home staff member. They gather information from the deceased's loved ones and create a written tribute that reflects their personality, accomplishments, and legacy.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also mention predeceased relatives, charitable organizations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet informative, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be suitable for online platforms or funeral home websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may require specific formatting, word count limits, or deadlines for publication. Be prepared to provide all necessary information and payment for the notice.

Can I write my own obituary?

While it's not common practice, some people do choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can ensure that their life story is told accurately and in their own voice. However, it's essential to share your wishes with loved ones to ensure they're aware of your intentions.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral arrangements. It's often used when a full obituary isn't feasible or desired.

What's the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing the death and providing biographical information. A eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and share personal anecdotes.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries can be lighthearted and humorous if that reflects the deceased's personality. Including funny stories or quotes can help bring comfort and smiles to those reading the tribute.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an obituary, contact the publication or funeral home immediately. They'll work with you to correct the errors and publish a revised version as soon as possible.

Can I republish an obituary online?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to share or republish an obituary from a newspaper or funeral home website. This can help reach a wider audience and create a permanent digital record of the tribute.

What is an online memorial?

An online memorial is a virtual space where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences after someone passes away. These memorials can remain active for years, providing ongoing support and remembrance.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites. Local libraries or historical societies may also have physical archives or microfilm records of past newspapers containing obituaries.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Yes! While it's less common, writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can still be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with future generations.

What is the purpose of an obituary in modern times?

In today's digital age, obituaries continue to serve as a way to notify others of a passing, but they also provide an opportunity for storytelling, celebrating life achievements, and creating a lasting legacy.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families prefer donations to charity instead of flowers. Include the charity's name and any relevant details in the obituary to make it easy for readers to contribute.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive topics or private matters surrounding the deceased's life or passing, it's essential to approach them with tact and respect. Consider consulting with family members or close friends before publishing any sensitive information.

Can I update an existing obituary?

If new information becomes available or corrections need to be made after publication, contact the original publication or funeral home to request updates. They'll guide you through their process for making changes.

What is the average cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication, word count, and additional features like photos or online listings. Expect costs ranging from $50 to several hundred dollars for print publications; online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe depends on the publication's schedule and deadlines. For daily newspapers, it might take 1-2 days; weekly papers could take up to 7-10 days; online platforms usually publish within hours or minutes of submission.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems that resonate with the deceased's personality or spirit can add depth and meaning to the tribute. Choose words that reflect their values, passions, or sense of humor.

What is the role of social media in sharing obituaries?

Social media platforms have become essential tools for sharing news of a passing quickly and widely. Many funeral homes and online platforms now offer direct sharing options to Facebook, Twitter, and other networks.

Can I create a video tribute instead of a written obituary?

Yes! Video tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate someone's life through images, music, and spoken words. Online platforms may offer video creation tools or accept user-generated content.
