Henry K. "Hank" Schumaker - January 22, 1933 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Oregon)
Obituary Preview: Henry K. “Hank” Schumaker, 91, of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024 with his beloved wife and family by his side. He was born in Oregon Twp., Ohio to Henry C. and Vivian (Mueller) Schumaker on January 22, 1933. When Hank was 14 years old, his eye was caught by a beautiful young lady getting off the school bus and from that day, their love story and commitment to each other blossomed. Hank graduated from Clay High School class of 1951. He married “that girl,” the love of his life, Joanne (Eberlin) in 1953 and they shared 71 amazing years together, creating many beautiful memories throughout their lives. Hank was a member of the Future Farmers of America as a young man, and later joined the First St. John Lutheran Church and Harbor Light Lodge. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. Hank worked on the family farm growing many crops including apples, plums, peaches and cherries, soy beans, sugar beets, wheat and hay until the mid-1980s. In the 70’s Hank’s interest in boating began and ultimately became his true passion. He started working for the American Ship Building Company as a steel fitter and held many positions at the company, eventually becoming a highly regarded senior manager. His passion for boats spilled over into model ship building, leading to his building more than a dozen intricate one-of-a-kind models. He took immense pride in his work, spending time studying the prints of the ships he was building, even going to the extent of acquiring authentic paint for the ships’ hulls. He typically spent over 600 hours creating his treasured masterpieces. Each one was meticulously thought out and accurately replicated. If Hank wasn’t working on a model or maintaining his lawn, you could certainly find him out on the water. His family remembers the very first boat he had, a Lyman, and will always cherish the memories of summers at Anchor Point Marina and Put-in-Bay Island. Above all, what he loved most was time spent with his wonderful family.

(She always jokingly said, “It might not last !!”). Her family was her most prized accomplishment making sure they all stayed together with family functions and super fun Halloween and Christmas parties and Easter egg hunts. She talked always to others of her amazing kids and grandkids.

Another favorite pastime was feeding the sea gulls and watching deer roam around at Maumee Bay State Park, and rooting for her beloved Michigan Wolverines.
Mary was a fun and lively person to those who knew her, and she could make friends instantly with strangers that she met in life, even making life brighter for workers and patients with her unplanned piano recitals during her short stay at a nursing home following a spinal surgery, including making one special new friend in particular- Nancy, along with her longtime best friends Juanita, Sue, Kay and Darlene.
Mary loved working with kids her entire life, serving as a teacher aide to special needs children for six years at Oregon schools, plus mentoring/tutoring kids and adults to read with the Right to Read Literacy Program, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School plus directing children’s Christmas programs at church. She had worked at home for B&F Medical while raising her family, and later assisting the elderly with Home Alone Services of Toledo.
