Claire Adelman - December 13, 1927 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Dobbs Ferry)
Obituary Preview: With sadness for our loss and gratitude for her life, we announce the passing of Claire Adelman (née Cohen). Born on December 13, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York to Henry and Minnie Cohen, Claire grew up in Brooklyn and the Bronx, and attended the School for the Industrial Arts in New York City, where she did not come nearly as close to marrying classmate Tony Bennett as later family lore would imply.
A teenager during World War II, she served as a neighborhood translator between Yiddish and English for mothers who couldn’t read the letters their sons wrote home from the front. Shortly after the end of the war, her friend Gloria introduced Claire to her brother, Murray. Gloria made a good match. In 1949 Murray and Claire married and for over fifty years brought joy and laughter to the people around them, not to mention something to nosh on while they visited. They raised two sons, spoiled six grandchildren, traveled the world, and made their home a welcoming place for family and friends alike.
Claire could play almost any tune by ear on her piano and loved singing Broadway show tunes and jazz standards. At any moment, especially when in a room with her “such devoted sister” Greta, a theatrical performance might break out. She could draw and paint with stunning clarity. No one could kvell quite like her. And she always—always—made sure that her lipstick was perfectly applied.
She was an active and involved mother, a PTA officer at PS 31 in Yonkers, and even a Cub Scout Den Mother. Then, for many years she worked as a bookkeeper and office manager for firms in New York City. Both during her career and in retirement she was an active and generous volunteer with the Aviva (Yonkers) and Tarrytown, New York chapters of Hadassah.
She was predeceased by her husband, Murray Adelman, her dear friend Alvaro Scaduto, and her sisters Pearl Eisenstat, Muriel (Mickie) Palazzo, and Estelle (Skippy) Cortes.
She is survived by her sister Greta Beckerman, with whom she was able to live for the final year of her life; two sons, Steven Adelman of Plano, TX and Richard (Alice) Adelman of Irvington, NY; six grandchildren: Joseph (Sarah) Adelman of Framingham, MA, Michael (Melinda) Adelman of Rochester, NY, Sarah (Pat) Adelman of Boston, MA, Brian (Shayna) Adelman of Deerfield, IL, Mark (Brittany) Adelman of Stamford, CT, and Patrick Adelman of Brooklyn, NY; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived and will be greatly missed by several dozen nieces and nephews around the United States.
There is no better way to remember her than through one of her favorite show tunes: she loved us all a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.

Thomas David Torre - March 10, 1936 - March 29, 2024

Departed: 03/29/2024 (Dobbs Ferry)
Obituary Preview: Thomas David Torre, 88 years old, longtime resident of Ardsley, NY passed away on March 29, 2024. Tom was a father, Father-in-Law, Husband, Grandfather, Stepfather, Brother, Son, Uncle, Veteran, and Friend.
Tom was born on March 10, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY to Rose and Thomas Torre. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. While attending City College, Tom began working at a bank where he met his first wife Josette. He then went on to work for Larosa Macaroni. Tom’s last job was working for the Plastic Bag Factory Outlet. Once retired, he and Josette worked as antique dealers which fulfilled a passion of theirs.
Tom served in the US Army from 1956-1958. Tom met Josette in 1959, they wed in 1960, and went on to have their only son Steven in 1964. He was beyond proud of Steve. He absolutely beamed when he mentioned him. The stories were fondly retold about summer trips to Montauk, escapades in Vermont, broadcasting backyard baseball games - it made his life endlessly happy. That was Tom - the most altruistic human being who was only truly happy when others were happy.
In 2003 Tom would meet his second wife Anita and they would wed in 2004. Anita was a godsend for Tom. The last 20 years of his life was like a movie - love found the second time around that was equivalent to their air they breathed.
Tom had a zest for life. Loved his food, 5:00 PM for his red wine, the Yankees, Willie Mays, antiques, being a little league coach, and his friends. He was lucky to have found true love twice but it’s not surprising in the least. Josie and Anita completed him.
His body and mind gave out long before his heart ever could. His family and friends will miss him more than we can ever begin to understand. Tom passed on Good Friday, and we’re told that if someone passes during Holy Week they go right to heaven. In his case, Tom was a shoe in but that seals the deal.
Tom is predeceased by his parents Rose and Thomas and his first wife Josette. He is survived by his son Steven Torre, wife Anita Torre, daughter in law Lauren Torre, grandchildren Alexandra Torre, Kyle Torre, and Lucas Torre, stepdaughter Alison Fahey, granddaughter Tessa Fahey, stepson Scott Fahey, stepdaughter in law Susan Fahey, grandchildren Morgan Fahey, Grace Fahey, TJ Fahey, brothers Rocco (Pat) Torre and Louis (Carolyn) Torre along with nieces and nephews. There isn’t a man that was as beloved as Poppy Tom. He was a beautiful soul to his core. Loving. Gentle. Patient. Understanding. Corny. A hard worker. Family was everything. And never had a complaint - about anything. Ever. Even when cancer ravaged his body. Rest easy Poppy Tom. Everyone who knew you will take a page from your book and have ‘no complaints.’

Joel Edward Rubin - September 05, 1928 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Dobbs Ferry)
Obituary Preview: JOEL EDWARD RUBIN, Leader in Theatre Lighting
Born Sept. 5, 1928, Cleveland, OH. Died March 27, 2024, age 95.
Predeceased by his parents Pearl (Jacobs) and Morris Rubin, and by older brothers Saul and Alan. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lucille Schutmaat Rubin and their 3 children, Brian, Jennifer, and Rebecca; by sons-in-law Nicholas and Lee, and by 4 grandchildren (Rachel, Brian Jr., Julia, and Cadence).
During high school and college, he worked summers at Cain Park Theatre, learning stagecraft, lighting, and sound. Joel spoke with great love of his years at Cain Park, which he said “enticed him into a career in the theatre” and where he became director of lighting and sound in 1950. He was a graduate of Cleveland Heights HS (1945), Case Inst. of Tech. (BSEE 1949), Yale Univ. (MFA 1951), and Stanford Univ. (PhD 1960).
Joel met his future wife, Lucille, in 1953 while a Visiting Lecturer in Stage Lighting at the Northwestern Univ. summer session. A high school drama teacher from Holland, MI, studying for a master’s degree, Lue shared his passion for theatre. Their partnership and careers encompassed 70 years of all that happens in theatre “before the curtain rises” as Joel once said.
They were married Dec. 18, 1953, moved to Riverdale NY in 1954, and in 1966 purchased a home in Hastings on Hudson where they lived and worked in their respective theatre fields, commuting daily to NYC for nearly 60 years. Joel once commented that the choice of Hastings was important to them as a way to raise their children closer to the outdoors, and indeed in Hastings they were blessed with a natural environment and a perpetual series of friendly neighbors.
The words of a colleague describe the “monumental effect he had on the world, literally, of theatre.” He is co-author with Lee Watson of Theatrical Lighting Practice, which inter-relates training for lighting design, the profession of theatrical lighting, and chapters on current practices in lighting for various performance types.
His doctoral dissertation, The Technical Development of Electric Stage Lighting Apparatus in the American Theatre, is considered a standard reference. Over the years, he authored several score articles appearing in a wide range of publications here in the United States and in foreign journals in over twenty countries.
His scholarship united lighting theory and practice at a time when the theatre arts were enjoying tremendous growth and change. He joined Kliegl Brothers Lighting in 1954, rose to the level of Executive VP, and stayed with Kliegl for 3 decades. He started a lighting design consultancy (Joel E Rubin & Assoc.) in 1985 and in 1993 joined the acoustics consultants ARTEC. Hundreds of public and private venues around the world benefited from his designs for lighting systems. Over the course of his lifetime, Joel provided wisdom, leadership and outstanding service to several theatre organizations. He co-founded the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) in 1960, served as President (1963-1965), received the Founders Award (1972), was inducted as Fello (1977), was acknowledged with Honorary Lifetime Membership (1998), and accepted the Golden Anniversary Award (2010). Joel co-chaired winning US exhibitions for the Prague Quadrennial in 1987 (Gold Triga) and 1991 (Gold Medal). Joel was also a co-founder in 1969 of the International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects, and Theatre Technicians (OISTAT), the UNESCO-related international organization with national centers in 35 countries, serving as President (1971-1978). He served as Administrative VP of the American Educational Theatre Association (AETA) from 1961-63 and was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre (1974). In 2010, Joel was honored with the Wally Russell Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the advancement of theatre lighting. In the same year, USITT’s highest award for service was re-named in his honor as the Joel E. Rubin Founders Award. In the words of a colleague, “Joel challenged generations to do more and to do it better.” Another longtime colleague wrote: "There's no way to truly capture Dr. Joel's impact on our theatrical industry, his passion for all things International, his mentorship of generations of professionals and students. The USITT and OISTAT would not be who and what it is today without Joel. Lighting equipment manufacturing and theatre consulting are what they are because of Joel."
Joel treasured lifelong friendships with dozens of his mentors, classmates, and colleagues from around the world. He excelled at forging connections between cultures, at bringing people together for collaboration, and at mentoring. He read widely, valuing historical context, and amassed extensive book collections. Sunday mornings with family were notable for both he and Lucille reading the New York Times cover to cover. Much of his collection was donated to Tisch School of the Arts, the Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute at Ohio State, and to the Kennedy Library at CalState Los Angeles, where it joined the Design Resource Collection.
Today his family reflects on his generosity and his delightful wit and wisdom; his forward-looking nature; his ability to see the forest for the trees, the big picture, without neglecting detail; his ability to be both theory and practice, to be both hands on and able to deploy, intellectually, the tremendous depth and breadth of his knowledge of theatre arts in general, not just lighting; his patriotism (we share our fond memories of his hanging out the flag every fourth of July); his elegant and organized writing; and his keen eye for the play of light which no doubt contributed both to his lighting designs and his photography. He was also an able piano player, an able cook, and a very organized person regardless of the task.
Above all else, Joel’s great love was his family. He was a loving, reliable, and dedicated husband and a generous and devoted father who delighted in time spent with his children and grandchildren. Family vacations to the CT and MA shorelines and walks in the Rivertowns are etched forever in his children’s minds and hearts and captured in Joel’s magnificent photography. Joel will be remembered for his enthusiasm, vision, optimism, and resilience. We will love and miss him forever.

Roberta S. Karmel - May 04, 1937 - March 23, 2024

Departed: 03/23/2024 (Dobbs Ferry)
Obituary Preview: Roberta S. Karmel, age 86, died in her sleep at her home in Hastings-on-Hudson on March 23, 2024. Daughter of Jacob and Eva Segal, Roberta grew up in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago and attended the Chicago public schools. She spent her childhood devouring library books and studying ballet, performing Swan Lake at the Lyric Opera House and cartwheels at the all-city basketball championship at Chicago Stadium. Roberta graduated from Radcliffe College and New York University School of Law. Upon graduation she was hired as an attorney in the New York regional office of the Securities and Exchange Commission. By her late 20s, she had been promoted to assistant regional administrator, supervising 50 members of the SEC’s enforcement staff. After working as an associate at a Wall Street law firm that declined to admit a woman into its all-male partnership, she joined Rogers & Wells as its first female partner in 1972. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter nominated her to be a Commissioner of the SEC. After her confirmation by the Senate, Roberta became the first female commissioner in the agency’s history. Bucking the prevailing sentiment of her fellow Commissioners and the SEC staff, she insisted that the agency have a sound statutory basis for its regulations and enforcement actions, publishing eighteen dissenting opinions in her tenure at the Commission. She later returned to private practice as a partner at Rogers & Wells and then Kelley, Drye & Warren while also serving, from 1986 to 2022, as a full-time professor at Brooklyn Law School. She was a prolific scholar, publishing books and scores of articles on financial regulation and corporate law, and lectured as a visiting scholar at universities in Beijing, Bologna, Frankfurt, London, Melbourne, Paris, Shanghai, Seattle and Sydney. During her service as the first female director of the New York Stock Exchange (1983-1989), its annual report one year featured a group photograph of the directors in which Roberta – at 5’ 1” wearing heels and sporting a white blazer – stood out among seventeen taller men wearing dark business suits. She also served on the boards of a publicly owned chemical company, a mutual insurance company, and many not-for-profit organizations. Throughout her career, Roberta mentored younger attorneys and law school students, especially encouraging women to succeed in the profession. Roberta loved the ballet, theater and opera and was an avid reader and traveler, visiting all 50 states and dozens of foreign countries, particularly in Europe and Asia, where she visited stock exchanges and rang the opening bell (or in Vietnam, the opening gong) as an honored Wall Street emissary. Roberta is predeceased by her first husband, Paul Karmel, with whom she had four children: Philip (Barbara Landress), Solomon (Martine Smets), Jonathan, and Miriam (Daniel Emery). She is also predeceased by her second husband David Harrison (father of Andy and Rachel). She is survived by her sister Phyllis Kaplan. Roberta was a devoted mother to her children and their spouses and loving grandmother to Jacob, Anna, Juliette, Paul, Owen, Ben, Elijah, Neoma, Aviv, and Jillian. Roberta’s homemade matzo ball soup, gefilte fish and brisket had legendary status, at least within her own family.
Donations in Roberta's memory may be given to the charity of your choice or one of the options linked below. Shiva will be as follows: Tuesday, March 26, and Wednesday, March 27 at the home of Phil Karmel and Barbara Landress, from 3pm to 9pm with maariv at 8pm Thursday, March 28 at the home of Miriam and Daniel Emery, from 3pm to 9pm with maariv at 8pm Friday, March 29 at the home of Phil Karmel and Barbara Landress from 1pm to 4pm with mincha at 3pm Sunday, March 31 at the home of Phil Karmel and Barbara Landress from 3pm to 9pm with mincha/maariv at 6pm Sunday, March 31 at the home of Jonathan Karmel, from 1pm to 7pm (the Mourner's Kaddish will be recited)
