He grew in his years there from counselor of First Year Campers, to directing their First Year Campers program until he became Camp Commissioner. One of John’s proudest moments was being voted for the Dave Jeffers Award by his fellow staff. He loved leading groups in camp songs and skits. For the rest of his life, John traveled frequently down to Broad Creek to volunteer in projects and programs during the off camp season.
John graduated from Kutztown Area High School in 2015, where he played in the Varsity Football and Basket ball programs. During High school John also played club rugby with the Kutztown Silverbacks. Joanne Barbara Pardee Carroll - Unknown - January 17, 2024

Departed: 01/17/2024 (Kutztown)
Obituary Preview: Joanne Barbara Pardee Carroll quietly passed away at home on January 17, 2024
Joanne Barbara Pardee Carroll was born in Denver, Colorado in 1938 and grew up in the Western suburb of Arvada, Colorado, the youngest of three sisters.
The creative arts were at the heart of Joanne's life. As a small girl, Joanne loved and studied dance eventually majoring in dance at Colorado State University. Here she met her lifelong husband, James F.L. Carroll. The couple were married in 1958 and started raising a family in Golden Colorado. After a long job hunt, the family moved east for her husband’s new teaching position at Kutztown State College in 1966.
Joanne birthed two daughters and two sons. She was immensely active in their lives and made sure there were lots of learning experiences; from swim lessons, horseback riding, encouraging and supporting school sports, theater, and a menagerie of pets.
Joanne choreographed musical productions at Kutztown State College in the late 1960's and '70's, and, taught ballet for a short time at the old borough hall.
Like many mothers of this era, Joanne had a sewing machine and sewed clothing for her children and flashy hippy ties for her college professor husband. The family also hosted popcorn and hamburger parties for art students at their home, the evening ending with guitars, banjos, musical spoons amid folk songs.
Joanne loved the old stone farmhouse the family purchased in 1970, three miles north of Kutztown, and called home for nearly 50 years. Eventually encompassing 18 acres, the gentleman’s farm allowed the family to have a pond, a large garden and many pets; horses, cats, ducks, a goose, rabbits, cats and a rescued raccoon. Joanne loved dogs and eight canine souls accompanied her throughout this lifetime.
Later, the farm was also a safehaven for her grandchildren. Naturally, Grandma was very active in her grandchildren’s lives. To this day, the farm with grandma and grandpa is a fond memory of catching frogs, playing with cats, building sandcastles in the old springhouse, talks with grandpa for the now adult grandchildren.
The place Joanne's creative endeavors flourished was at St. John's United Church of Christ in Kutztown. With great acoustics, the church has been a special venue for music and performance for decades.
With a close group of church friends, Joanne choreographed and performed Sacred Dance in the 1980's. Together with these same friends, Christian Clowning became their passion for many years. In white face, red smile & nose, and red yarn Raggedy Ann style wig, with several tears rolling down her cheeks, JoJo, was a gentle compassionate clown.
One of the highlights of JoJo’s clown career, and a story Joanne loved to tell, was dressing in full clown regalia, oil face paint, wig and all, with a friend in her personal clown attire, and riding public transportation in Philadelphia! Oh, the looks they got! As Joanne sagely explained, with deep historical and religious roots, clowning elicits some unusual emotional reactions from the public especially when out of context of circus or stage. Joanne found these oh, so human reactions, the fearful, the delighted and the ignored, to be great fodder for giggles, fun stories and philosophical reflection.
The 1990's was the dawn of puppetry in Joanne’s life. Each summer, she attended professional workshops which included instructors who were associates of Muppets creative genius Jim Henson. Joanne made her own puppets and staging. Many of her puppets with heads of carved foam were four feet tall. Many staged productions involving the church youth as novice puppeteers were held at St. John's.
Joanne was an active member of St. John’s since 1966. Volunteer service at the church in the making of crafts and foods for sale at the annual Christmas Bazaar and Easter time played a big part in her life for decades. With her alto voice and youth piano training, she was also a longtime choir member. Early on, Joanne was church secretary. Later, she was on the Consistory and Council of Elders. In retirement, she and her husband assisted further with the annual community Thanksgiving dinner. Starting in the late 1980's, Joanne became the secretary for the New Arts Program, a nationally recognized educational one-to-one meet the artist program featuring avante garde singers, dancers, painters, sculptors, poets and composers whom the public could meet and talk with in private creative conversations. Over nearly forty years, Joanne kept meticulous computer files, wrote federal and state grant applications, edited correspondence, was the social coordinator, gallery opening food and wine purveyor and, generally, second in command to her director and founder husband. Hundreds of artists and NAP members enjoyed interacting with her. Joanne genuinely enjoyed people. As her husband said, “Without Joanne, the NAP could not exist. She was one half of the program, entirely.” The last five years have found Joanne to be content in retirement with her husband and dog, living next door to her youngest daughter. The family will miss Joanne and enjoy their memories of time spent with her
A celebration of life service will take place January 28th, 2pm, at St John's United Church of Christ, 257 West Walnut St, Kutztown, Pa.

Sharon Sheehe Stark - Unknown - November 25, 2023

Departed: 11/25/2023 (Kutztown)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Sheehe Stark of Lenhartsville, PA died on November 25 at her home in Kutztown after a long and courageous struggle with Parkinson’s Disease.  Sharon was born in Altoona, Pa on December 29, 1941, the daughter of Joseph and Lillian (Kukovitz) Sheehe, and grew up in Johnstown, PA.   In 1960, she married Howard Stark and moved with her husband to the eastern part of Pennsylvania, where her children, Julie and Howard (Tim) were born.   After helping her husband establish a successful law practice and raising her children, Sharon embarked upon a successful literary career, placing hundreds of short stories and poems in publications such as The Atlantic Monthly and Yankee magazine.  Her short fiction was regularly reprinted in Best American Short Stories and the O. Henry Awards.  She won a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment grant as well as praise from Pulitzer Prize winning author and Berks County native John Updike, who marveled at the “strange slanting magic” of her prose and added, “she does the best Pennsylvania Dutch accent I have ever seen in print.”  Sharon exposed the human condition with a compassionate and life affirming voice.  “A light appears in these stories,” the writer Andre Dubus said of her work.   Besides publishing the novel “A Wrestling Season” and a collection of short stories, “The Dealer’s Yard,” Sharon taught the craft of writing at the MFA program at Vermont College, helping to place many a fledgling writer on the road to publication.   After divorcing Howard, she turned her attention to the antique trade, collecting with the same writer’s eye for the telling minutiae of daily life.  She partnered with William Bascom of Allentown, whom she married in 2010, and together they curated a veritable museum of vintage fabrics and one-of-a-kind knick knacks.  Sharon cared deeply about the people around her, often worrying herself silly about the tribulations of others. Also, she was impossible to beat at Scrabble.  Her industriousness and creativity were an inspiration to everyone, especially her children, Julie and Tim, who will miss her dearly.  Sharon is also survived by her sister, Suzie Scullion, of Johnstown, PA, her brother Brian, of Riverside, CA, as well as by her grandchildren Zach, Gwen and Charlotte.  Her first husband, Howard, predeceased her, as did her second husband, William Bascom.  An informal memorial for Sharon will be held this coming Spring.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Sharon’s name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Obituary Preview: Peter S. Huber, 78, of Kutztown, Pa, died in his home October 22, 2023.
He was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Harvey Huber and Kathryn Shockey (Huber). Peter (Pete) acquired Bachelors and Masters degrees that led him to a career in educational counseling where he was able to support many young adults through difficult times. Caring for others in times of need was a common thread throughout his life no matter where he was or who he was with.  While it may seem juxtaposed, Pete spent much of his life as an entrepreneur in the motorcycle t-shirt circuit, which led him to a lifetime of travel and his super power was making friends everywhere he went. There aren’t many towns in this country you can go where someone doesn’t say “Oh, yeah I know Pete!”.  He had an unbridled energy and passion for life.  His favorite saying was “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room.”
One of the biggest joys in his life was being there for the birth of his grandchildren, spending time with them and watching them learn and grow over the years.
Peter was preceded in death by Harvey, father; Kathryn, mother; and is survived by, daughter, Elizabeth/Lucas, grandchildren, Emma and Max, siblings, Tim/Barb, Steve/Laura, Ann/David, as well as many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to share the news with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends, acquaintances, and colleagues of the death, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance in writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations, or other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to upload one or more photos of the deceased to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person who has passed.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with payment information and any required documentation.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy. Keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to review and finalize the obituary after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Online obituary platforms often offer free or low-cost options, while newspapers may charge anywhere from $50 to $500 or more.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It's generally possible to make corrections or edits to an online obituary after publication. However, for printed newspapers, changes may not be feasible once the issue has gone to press. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration for which an online obituary remains available varies by platform. Some websites may keep them up indefinitely, while others may archive or remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the specific platform for their policies.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to verify copyright permissions if necessary.

Should I include funeral service details in the obituary?

Yes, it's common to include details about the funeral or memorial service in the obituary. This helps ensure that friends and family know when and where to attend.

Can I request donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes, many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory. Be sure to specify the desired charity and any relevant details.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites like Ancestry.com or Newspapers.com. Local libraries or historical societies may also have physical archives of old newspapers containing obituaries.

Can I write an anonymous obituary?

In general, it's not recommended to write an anonymous obituary. Obituaries are meant to be a public tribute and notification; anonymity can make it difficult for friends and family to find and respond to the notice.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible. They may be able to correct errors or issue a revised version.

Can I create a video or multimedia obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms now offer options for creating multimedia tributes that incorporate photos, videos, music, and other elements. These can be a powerful way to celebrate a person's life.

Are there any specific regulations around writing an obituary?

No federal regulations govern what can be included in an obituary. However, individual publications or platforms may have guidelines or restrictions around content, length, and tone.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template?

You can certainly use templates as inspiration or guidance when writing an obituary. However, be sure to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life and personality.

How do I deal with conflicting opinions on what should be included in an obituary?

In cases where multiple family members or friends have differing opinions on what should be included in an obituary, consider holding a meeting or discussion to come to a consensus. Remember that the goal is to honor and celebrate the person who has passed.

Can I write a humorous or lighthearted obituary?

Absolutely! While traditional formalities are often observed in writing an obituary, there's no reason why you can't inject some humor or personality into the tribute if that reflects your loved one's spirit.

What if I'm struggling emotionally with writing an obituary?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to emotional distress, consider reaching out to a trusted friend or family member for support. You may also want to take breaks from writing or seek professional counseling if needed.

Can I include personal anecdotes or stories in an obituary?

YES! Personal anecdotes and stories can bring warmth and humanity to an otherwise formal notice. They help paint a richer picture of your loved one's life and personality.
