Peter Masello - November 22, 1925 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (New Castle)
Obituary Preview: Peter Masello, 98, formerly of Hazelcroft Avenue, passed away peacefully the morning of January 7, 2024.
Born in New Castle on November 22, 1925, Pete was the son of the late Antonio and Anna Marie Venditto Masello.
Pete proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific as a radioman 2nd Class. He often remarked that when he graduated from New Castle High School in 1944, he received his diploma in one hand and his service orders in the other. While aboard his first ship, young Pete was so seasick that he lost 40 pounds, all while dreaming of his mother’s cavatelli and meatballs.
Upon his return from WWII, on June 14, 1947, Pete married his high school sweetheart, the former Louise T. Lamorella. For Pete, it was love at first sight. When he heard “Lou” give a school presentation on South America, Pete felt transported to the tropics by the way she spoke, and he fell in love with Lou that very moment. After 62 happy years together, Louise preceded him in death on July 27, 2009.
In the early years Pete worked for United Engineering and Mesta Machine. He then worked for the United States Postal Service for twenty years, until he retired as a supervisor. Even in “retirement,” Pete worked another twenty-two years for Preston Motors as one of their drivers.
Pete was a life- long and proud member of St. Vitus Church where he served as an usher and as a member of the Holy Name Society, where he was named as Man of The Year in 1991. Pete was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the American Legion the NARFE (National Active Retired Federal Employees) and a Charter Member of the Italian American War Vets. Pete enjoyed visiting casinos and cherished time spent with his family, especially his beloved great grandsons, Luke, Max and Carson Martinucci, of whom he was very proud. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan, and loved to watch the games with his great grandsons (who thought Grandpa Pete could have easily been a sports commentator, even in his nineties).
Pete is survived by his son-in-law, Mark A. Cappabianco, Jr., his granddaughter, Amy Martinucci, and his three great grandsons. In addition, he is survived by his sister Mary Tuscano (Larry) of New Hampshire, and sisters-in-law, Catherine Masello and Irene Lamorella.
In addition to his parents and wife, Pete was preceded in death by his daughter, Carmie A. Cappabianco, his granddaughter, Alison Rae Cappabianco, his grandson Dr. Patrick Martinucci; brothers, Patsy and Dominick Masello; brothers-in-law, Vince, Angelo and Joseph Lamorella and Joseph Monaco; sisters-in-law Mary Monaco, Beatrice Masello, Vivian Lamorella, and Angeline Lamorella.
Visitation will be on Wednesday 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Full Military Rites at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
Family and Friends will meet on Thursday at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Vitus Church for a funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Father Benjamin Barr will officiate.
