Stuart W Macomber - Unknown - March 25, 2022

Departed: 03/25/2022 (Newton)
Obituary Preview: Stuart W. Macomber of Newton Centre passed away on March 25, 2022. He was 84.
Stuart was born in Hudson, MA and had been a resident of Newton for over 50 years. He was a graduate of WPI and had had a variety of careers from being an engineer, a stock broker, a bookshop owner and a lobsterman.
Stuart is survived by his wife Marie (Crowley) Macomber, his 4 sons Scott, Lee (and his wife Karol), Todd (and his wife Michelle), and Chris (and his wife Debra), and his 9 grandchildren Nathan, Kristian, Noe, David, Carlin, Ayla, Ryan, Maya and Nicholas. He is also survived by his brother Richard and his sister Nancy Nickerson. Stu was a man of many talents and interests, and was a lifelong engineer regardless of his current occupation. It was rare for Stu to find a machine that he couldn't fix, and he was happy to take it apart to see how it worked regardless.  Through genes and by example, Stu, like his father Ken before him, did his best to pass these talents to his children and grandchildren.   Stu was also reluctant to throw things away, knowing that they could come in useful some day.  And sure enough, they did sometimes.  Stu's sons will have to divide these things among themselves, since his wife Marie will have none of that anymore.
Stu always loved the sea.  He built his own boat as a teenager for mossing and for fishing a few lobster pots.  When later he became a stock broker, on his breaks he would walk down to the harbor in Boston and watch the lobster boats coming and going, which reignited his desire to work on the sea.  He was eventually able to follow that dream when he bought his own commercial 'Novi' lobster boat, the 'Seacomber'.
Stuart was known by all to be a thoughtful, warm, and generous man. He will be greatly missed. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Mon Mar 28 from 4-7 PM in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre St. Newton Corner.
Funeral service will be private.

Betty DiMella Whitney - Unknown - March 20, 2022

Departed: 03/20/2022 (Newton)
Obituary Preview: Betty DiMella Whitneyof Chestnut Hill, MA, died March 20, 2022 at the age of 81. Wife of the late Pat Petronelli, and sister of the late Barbara Struzenski, Betty is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Nancy DiMella, her brother-in-law William Struzenski, her nieces Karen Koym, Andrea and Leslie DiMella, her grand-nephews Oscar and Jonah Hammarlund, and her grand-nieces Kendall Koym, Kate Koym, Estelle Hammarlund and Harley Freitas
The second daughter of “Chic” and Ang DiMella, Betty was born in Hartford, Connecticut on May 11, 1940, a year to the day after her sister Barbara. She attended school in Hartford until her parents moved to nearby Wethersfield where she graduated from high school. After earning an Associates Degree from the University of Hartford, Betty moved to Boston and became Assistant to a Senior Partner at the law firm of Goulston & Storrs.
After retiring from Goulston, Betty worked at the Harvard Varsity Club as Chief Financial Administrator.  Always an avid sports enthusiast, Betty enjoyed not only engaging regularly with Harvard alumni athletes, but also becoming a mentor to many student athletes who had the advantage of interacting with her. “Betty meant SOOOOOOOOOOO much more to the HVC/Harvard students/alumni than her accounting abilities. She kept everyone real. Every day.”, said Bob Glatz, Executive Director of the HVC.
After a brief first marriage to A. William Whitney, Betty met and married Pat Petronelli, who, with his brother, managed and trained “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, the famed Brockton born Middleweight Boxing Champion. Betty helped Pat in his work to promote Marvin and enjoyed the excitement and intensity of the boxing world. Betty and Pat loved sports, rides in the country, horse racing and led a happy life with friends and extended family. When Pat later became ill and needed full time nursing care, Betty was with him every day. After Pat’s passing Betty became a volunteer at the nursing home, running bingo games and bringing laughter and play to residents along with her dear friend Margie Bibbo.
Her friendship with Margie led to increasing volunteer work at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church in Newton Upper Falls where she developed a close bond with the church’s pastor, Father Charles Higgins. Tapping into her lifelong love of flowers, one of Betty’s major contributions was to beautify the entry and altars of the church with exquisite seasonal floral and plant arrangements.
Everyone who knew Betty knew she was strong in her convictions and always spoke exactly what was on her mind. Her powerful personality shone through with everyone she met and gave her the ability to quickly “break through the ice” and establish rapport even with complete strangers. Many of her family and friends have hilarious stories about Betty and how her “big personality” always captured the room. No one who met her could ever forget her.
Simple in her tastes and generous to a fault, Betty also had signature dishes that she would prepare for family and friends, precisely to her specifications -  everyones’ most loved being her delicate eggplant parmigiana.  We may never make it as well! All who loved Betty will miss her greatly.
Mass in celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 25th at 10:30am at Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church at 270 Eliot Street in Newton, MA followed by interment at Newton Cemetery and Arboretum.

Hoa Dien Truong - Thi Fuller - Unknown - October 20, 2021

Departed: 10/20/2021 (Newton)
Obituary Preview: Hoa Dien Truong-Thi Fuller was born in the Province of Thua Thien in Central Vietnam in the early part of the 20th century. She graduated from the famous Dong Khanh high school for girls where she also taught for a few years.  She left for Paris to pursue her higher education, first at the Sorbonne, and then at one of France’s prestigious ‘grandes ecoles’, “Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales” known as HEC. She was the very first Vietnamese woman to be admitted at a time when very few women were even considered by that institution.  She liked to say that many of the Vietnamese men grumbled at her audacity to attend HEC. But she dared, dared she.  She was lucky to have a professor on her side when her graduation thesis on the rice economy in Vietnam was critical of the French colonial policies.  In the middle of all these, she married and had two daughters, Tuong-Van (Lili) and Tuong-Anh, both born in Paris.  In 1956, she returned to Vietnam to become the managing director of a major pharmaceutical company, “Office Pharmaceutique de Vietnam”,”OPV”.  And then, there were four children, when her two boys, Tuan and Thierry, were born in Saigon.  In 1967, she founded Thanh Son Cong-Ty (Blue Mountain Inc.), which specialized in agro-chemicals and animal health products, hence spearheaded a whole sector of the economy that had previously been neglected.  In 1975, she settled in Chestnut Hill, while keeping her hands in a few business enterprise pies. She did go back to Vietnam when it started to open itself to US investment; true to form, she joined the Massachusetts delegation to Hanoi to muster up some business interest. She eventually retired from active public business activities and turned her home into a boarding house for the students of Boston College, her next door neighbor.  In her later years, although her health was faltering, she still had the strength to continue living to enjoy seeing and spending time with her grand children, Marc, Minh-Vi, Mai-Vi, and Melissa, and her three great grand children, Nina, Mila and Luca.  She left this world peacefully, in her home, surrounded by the love of her children.  Thanks to modern technology, her far away children were able to be with her by video chat and she was able to hear them.  She is resting now, probably scheming some deals to do with the angels up there. Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services.

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 100-200 words.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?
