Vicki was born on February 5, 1955 in Rochester to Ralph E. and Peggy L. (Wagoner) Curtis.  She graduated from Akron High School in 1973 and furthered her education at Indiana University Purdue University, Fort Wayne.
Vicki and Richard A. Harrold joined their life together 43 years ago on May 21, 1977 at Beaver Dam United Methodist Church in Akron.  She and Richard shared a hope and faith in Jesus Christ, and this was the foundation on which they built their life.  They were blessed with the birth of a son, Jason who with his wife Tonia gave the couple their three beloved grandchildren who were the light of Vicki and Richard’s life.
Family traditions and her home were of great importance to her.  She cherished days spent with her grandchildren watching their soccer games, swimming in the pool and going on their home school field trips.  The family enjoyed many trips to attend tractor shows.  A walk through Vicki’s home reveals many of her passions.  She was a collector from Jason and Dick’s John Deere tractors and Indy 500 memorabilia, to Longaberger baskets and cherished antiques, which included many family pieces.
Vicki loved music of all kinds from sacred to rock and roll.  Even in high school, she was known as a wonderful soloist in the choir and in school musicals.  The love of music continued as she become active in the church again singing solos for all events and duets with Lori Miller.
The music for VBS and the Kings Kids program at Beaver Dam Church was another great love in her life.  She spent hours putting together music for the children that would be fun and inspiring as her desire was to have EVERY child know about Jesus and have music touch their hearts in a very special way.  She was also in charge of the music ministry for the church, selecting music for services and special occasions.
In addition to her love for music, Vicki loved children and taught Sunday school classes for many years.  Her desire to serve God in any way that she could led her to lead the UMW ladies in the annual “Apple Dumpling Day” at church.  She organized the project where they often made 700 apple dumplings.  Vicki was also well known for her yearly gifts of homemade Christmas rings to friends and family.  The production of which had involved every member of the family over the years, and was carried on by her family, in her honor during her hospital stay.
Vicki worked several years for many businesses and organizations:  Farmers State Bank, First United Methodist Church, Harris Drugs, Webbs Pharmacy, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School and Fulton County United Way.  From these associations she made many life-long friends.  Friends were valued by Vicki and she was always willing to do anything she could to come to their aid, until you were challenging her in a game of cards or a dance off to Chubby Checkers’ 1960’s song “The Twist”.  Then it was every man for themselves.
Surviving Vicki is her husband Richard A. Harrold of Akron; son: Jason (spouse Tonia) of Akron; (3) grandchildren: Noah, Madelyn and Sophia Harrold of Akron; sister: Marsha Arnett of Rochester; brother: Steve (spouse Johanna) Curtis of Rochester; nieces: Shannon (spouse Fred) McGlothin of Rochester; Lindsey (spouse Ryan) Reese of Rochester; Kim (spouse Danny) Hodge of Oklahoma; nephews: Nathan Arnett of Silver Lake; Eric (spouse Lisa) Gray of Kokomo.

John W. Nichols - April 30, 1940 - September 09, 2020

Departed: 09/09/2020 (Akron)
Obituary Preview: John Wayne Nichols, 80, was known as “Big John” to those closest to him.  He was passionate and compassionate, hard-working and humorous.  He loved his country and loved his country’s food.  He loved the Lord.  He loved his family.
He was born in Indianapolis on April 30, 1940.  He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on September 9, 2020.  But he didn’t pass before his family had a chance to say goodbye.
Nichols was a family man through and through.  He is survived by Angela Conwell Nichols, who he married on March 30, 1991.  His parents were Carl Nichols and Helen (Thomas) Nichols.  He was preceded in death by his siblings; Tommy, Beverly, Billy, and Joan Nichols.  He had three children; Misty Lytle Cripe (spouse Robert Cripe), Max “Jake” Lytle, and Wayne Nichols.  He had numerous nieces and nephews.  His grandchildren, Shaily Cripe, Sawyer Cripe, Megan Jackson Cripe, Quentin Nichols and Ben Sery, were the best thing that ever happened to him.  He had one great grandchild, Maxwell Cripe.
John was a tireless worker.  He served in the United States Army from February 1963 to May 1965 as an M60 tank operator in Germany.  He worked at Torx and ran his own mechanic shop for decades, in addition to being a custodian at Rochester Middle School.  Even at the age of 80, he loved to cut wood.  He’d cut it, split it, stack it, load it, unload it and restack it; a truckload every day, every type of weather.
As hard as he worked, he loved even harder.  He loved his grandchildren.  He loved being a proud member of Cornerstone Church in Mentone, Indiana.  Big John loved playing cards, bringing a deck with him everywhere he went.  He loved his daily cup of coffee at Tweedlee D’s Diner with his friends.  He loved to go to the gambling boat every now and then to play the slot machines.
Even if he couldn’t pronounce a word, he’d make one up.  The word “hernia” was “hurney”.  A “Mexican” restaurant was “Messican”.  Every one of his new vocabulary words prompted another round of laughter from those around him.
He was always trying to take money out of your pocket, betting on everything from Colts games to board games.  He was competitive in the food line, too.  Even women and children never beat John in line at the potluck.  Especially when there were mashed potatoes or biscuits and gravy to be had.
But that competitive nature was always usurped by the love he had for his family.  His granddaughter Shaily caught him crying when the Colts beat the Patriots and made it to the Super Bowl in 2006.  He loved to work on cars with his grandson Sawyer.  And he made sure to give his grandkids an edge to win the pot playing cards even if it meant taking a peek at the deck and giving a subtle nod.
He worked tirelessly, served fervently, laughed loudly and loved deeply.  And he will be missed greatly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable affiliations.

Who writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls on family members or close friends. In some cases, funeral homes or online obituary platforms may offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary can vary depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to gather information and craft a well-written obituary.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload one or more photos to accompany the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find submission guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make minor corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, significant changes may not be allowed due to space constraints or other limitations.

How long do obituaries stay online?

The duration for which an obituary remains online varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the notice more engaging.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search for old obituaries through online archives, libraries, or genealogy websites. Many newspapers also maintain archives of past issues that can be accessed for research purposes.

Can I republish an obituary from another source?

If you're considering republishing an obituary from another source, make sure you have permission from the original publisher or author. You may need to obtain copyright clearance or provide proper attribution.

What's the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the platform, newspaper, or funeral home. Some may offer free services, while others charge by word count or add-ons like photos or videos.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can be a meaningful way to personalize an obituary and reflect the person's personality or interests.

How do I notify social media platforms about a death?

Most social media platforms have procedures for reporting a user's passing and memorializing their account. You can usually find this information in their help sections or terms of service.

Can I create a memorial website instead of an obituary?

Absolutely! Memorial websites offer a more comprehensive way to celebrate someone's life and provide ongoing support for loved ones. They can include photos, stories, condolences, and more.

What's the purpose of an online guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and sign their name digitally. This provides a sense of community and support during a difficult time.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other tributes. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and continue their legacy.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice errors or inaccuracies in an obituary, contact the publisher or funeral home immediately. They will work with you to correct the mistakes and republish the revised notice.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary?

Yes! You may want to create different versions of an obituary for various audiences or platforms. For example, you might write a longer version for a funeral program and a shorter version for social media.

What's the role of an funeral home in creating an obituary?

Funeral homes often assist with writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services. They may also provide guidance on what information to include and how to structure the notice.

Sometimes! Depending on the platform or newspaper, you may be able to include links or URLs in an obituary. This can be useful for directing readers to memorial websites or charity pages.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

To ensure accuracy when writing an obituary, gather information from reliable sources like family members, friends, and official documents. Double-check dates, names, and spellings before submitting the notice for publication.
