Larry John Bernath - May 15, 1940 - April 13, 2024

Departed: 04/13/2024 (Hudson)
Obituary Preview: Larry John Bernath, 83, of Waldron, MI, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Gaslight Village Assisted Living in Adrian, Michigan.
Larry was born on May 15, 1940, to John “Wayne” and Reta (Joughin) Bernath in Morenci, Michigan. His father was a farmer, tractor mechanic and telephone lineman/repairman. His mother was the ever devoted, loving housewife. Along with his identical twin brother, Leland, he had one older and one younger brother, Loyal and Leo. They were “The Four L’s”.
He attended Waldron School and recalled times when he and Lee would play the standard twin shenanigans such as fooling their teachers by switching places with one another other. Growing up on a family farm of course meant helping his dad and brothers with working the land and milking cows. Larry contracted polio as a child which caused long term damage to his leg and ankle, but he was never one to let that hold him back. He was a hard worker.
He married Judy Gallippo on October 2, 1964. In 1967, they purchased his aunts’ property next to his parent’s farm and they made it their forever home. Their marriage was blessed with 2 sons, David and Darren. Both have said of their dad that he was more patient than he should have been. They do not remember him ever being angry or raising his voice toward them. He was an avid fan of his children, always attending their athletic events and cheering them on. They enjoyed family vacations traveling all over the United States.
The story has it that Larry temporarily left the farm to hire in at Adrian Steel Company as summer help. In his words, “I survived the ‘A-Team’ for 41 years, 5 months and 21 days. What a long winter.” He was a dedicated husband, father and provider, working long hours to ensure his wife and children would never go without. Family, friends and community were important to him.
His heart grew as his family grew. He dearly loved his grandchildren. It wasn’t unusual to find him down on the floor playing with them, making one of his funny faces or talking in a silly voice in an effort to make them giggle. He supported them in their endeavors and was quite proud of them as he watched them each grow into adulthood.
In spite of his fear of the water, he enjoyed fishing. Fishing trips to the U.P. with his sons, twin brother and three grandsons were a high point for him. He also loved to spend time in his barn. If he wasn’t out there tinkering, he would simply be sitting in his lawn chair enjoying his surroundings. He could even be found napping out there from time to time. It was a dream of his to have a windmill in the back yard. When he finally bought one and restored it, it was his pride and joy. In his later years, he looked forward to Friday morning men’s breakfast at a local diner and time well spent with friends.
Larry never met a stranger. He was one of the friendliest, kindest men you could ever meet. One could bet you wouldn’t be around him very long before he would make you smile by sharing one of his clever idioms. Even during his battle with Alzheimer’s disease, he continued to rattle off new phrases his family had not heard before. His sense of humor and love for his family never faded away completely, he always found a way to break through the dementia and keep them laughing.
Larry is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, David (Lisa) of Waldron, MI, and Darren (Melinda) of Manitou Beach, MI; grandchildren, Trever (Janell) Bernath, Travis (Megan) Bernath, Morgan Bernath, Garrett Bernath, and Paige Bernath; great-grandchildren, Colten, Bowen, Clare, and a baby boy on the way; brothers, Leland Bernath and Leo (Patricia) Bernath; step-grandchildren, Mara Kivela, Miranda (Patrick) Hernandez, and Rial Ryan; step-great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Patrick Jr, and Abraham; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loyal; and sister-in-law, Miriam Bernath.
Visitation for Larry will be held at the Eagle-Marry Funeral Home in Hudson on Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 2:00-7:00 PM. There will be a Visitation at Noon on Friday, April 19 followed by the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Kim Repp officiating. Interment will follow at Waldron Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Larry’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Fern Hall - December 10, 1938 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Hudson)
Obituary Preview: Fern Lee Hall of Waldron, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024, at the age of 85, after a brief stay at the Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center. Fern Lee Bunting was born on December 10, 1938, in Toledo, Ohio, to Chester Bunting and Donelda (Fenton) Bunting.  On October 15, 1956, she married Roy Lee Hall, after a whirlwind romance.  They knew each other eight days before becoming engaged, were married a few days later and remained married for 64 years until Roy’s passing on May 8, 2020.
Fern loved gardening, planting her flower beds each year, telling old fishing stories her and her sister-0in-law Betty, but most of all she loved her family. She was the pure definition of a woman. She raised four boys, most the time alone as a Navy wife, and had a hand in raising some of her grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren. She kissed the boo boos, baked the cookies and made the Sunday dinners. Anyone who walked into her kitchen felt her love, and everyone was always welcome, even if she talked about you after you left. Her stubbornness was adored just much as her kindness, and her flare for the dramatics has been passed down throughout the generations. She gave everything to those she loved, and she will be forever missed. There will never be a better mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother.
Surviving Fern are her four boys, Mickeal (Kristen) Hall, of Montpelier, Ohio, Randy (Julie) Hall, of Swartz Creek, Michigan, Steven (Tina) Hall, of Waldron, Michigan, and William Hall of Waldron, Michigan. Nine grandchildren, Jeremy Hall, Mishelle Hall, Christopher Hall, Mitchell Hall, Craig Hall, Andrew Hall, Kathryn Schaffner, Kasandra Emens, and Seth Hall. She had nineteen great-grandchildren and was excited to be welcoming her first great-great-grandchild this August. Also surviving are her sisters Barb Shaffer, Carolyn Johnston, and her brother Marlo Eidenier, along with her sister-in-law Betty Hall and several nieces and nephews.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy, a brother Butch, her sister Margie, and a great-granddaughter Gracie.
Per her very specific instructions “If you cannot visit me when I am alive, don’t visit me when I’m dead”, therefore there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Waldron Cemetery on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor William Van Valkenburg to be officiating.
