Daniel J. Johnson - November 05, 1978 - January 07, 2024

Departed: 01/07/2024 (De Kalb)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Joseph Johnson: son, brother, cousin, uncle, friend, died on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at Rush Ochsner Hospital in Meridian, MS; he was 45 years old. Daniel was born to Donna Leah McCullough ( née Johnson) and John Johnson on November 5, 1978 at Matty Hersee Hospital in Meridian, MS.
Those close to him knew that his health had been failing rapidly since the death of his beloved mother in October of 2020 and followed closely by the death of his sister, Jeanie M. Davis, in February of 2021. Those close to him also know that he has struggled with drug and alcohol addiction his entire adult life. His family has ached in helpless frustration at their inability to lessen the pain of his soul and they now ache with sorrow for his loss.
A century ago, Daniel would have found peace living out his adult life as a hermit; a millennia ago, he would have been contented in life as a monk tending flocks in some remote Franciscan Monastery. Daniel found joy in music, animals, and the feel of the sun on his skin. He loved being outside in green spaces far from street lights and car horns, concrete buildings and paved parking lots. He grew up with his siblings, cousins, and friends in the woods and creeks and backyards of Suqualena, climbing trees, wrestling dogs, playing ball. He inherited a deep, abiding love for the front porch from his mother and would happily spend hours there in any weather with anyone who was willing to talk and when there was no one to talk to he would listen to music. As a teenager, he received a boombox as a gift and began his lifelong love of 1980s rock along with his lifelong experience of being told to, “Turn down that music!”. Daniel was never happier than when he was lost in his music, lying tangled with a dog or cat, all of them blissfully enjoying the head rubs and ear scratches.
The love Daniel had for his family was immense and the damage his addictions wreaked on his relationships with them was an unending source of shame and heartbreak for him. He was unable to see in himself all the things his family saw in him and wanted so desperately to save. The thoughtful child who always knew when his mama was sad; the steadfast guard at the entrance to the garden shed where his cousin hid from the noise of every airplane that passed overhead; the gentle big brother afraid to hold his newborn baby sister for fear he would hurt her; the quiet boy who could always be found wherever the dog or cat was; the teary-eyed man smiling at his newborn nieces and nephews; the gruff uncle calling to talk to you and see how you were doing.
In the last months of his life, Daniel tried to find a path to exist in some form of peace with this world. But there were too many pill bottles to keep up with; too many people and house and streets and cars surrounding the place he was expected to call home; too many reasons why he wasn’t allowed to have an animal; too many days without being able to talk to his mama. Some of the last conversations he had were phone calls to the next generation of his family to let them know he loved them and to try to impart the wisdom he had paid such an intolerable price for.
Daniel is survived by his brother, John Edward Johnson; his sister, Cyndle Litchfield; his nieces, Kaylei Neal, Anna Johnson, and Kinley Litchfield; his nephews, Daniel Connor, Elijah Johnson, and Anthony Litchfield; his aunts Linda Winslett and Lauri Hoyt; his uncles Joseph Winslett and Ray Hoyt; and his cousins, Cherry Ward, Lauren Cress, Gage Hughes, Ethan Cress, and Caleb Cress.
