Joan Marie-Grace Shannon - October 03, 1942 - July 07, 2021

Departed: 07/07/2021 (Bayonne)
Obituary Preview: Joan Marie Grace (Janiszewski) Shannon
Heartbreakingly on Wednesday July 7th 2021, our Beloved Mother passed away at Bayonne hospital in the presence of her two loving sons Robert E. Jr. and Troy J. Shannon with Caroline Nittolo and Dania Delavera, being our Loved Ones. Our Mother, born Joan Marie Janiszewski to father John and mother Mary on October 3rd 1942 in Downtown Jersey City. As a child she loved going to her grandparent’s farm, growing to love all animals especially horses, riding and caring for them. A city girl with a country heart. Our Mother had a passion for German Shepherds raising, training and owning them for many decades. All dogs and wolves have been howling ever since her passing. As a teenager our Mother twisted and Doo-woped her way into loving a small-time singer called Elvis. The last song our Mother heard was Elvis’s rendition of Amazing Grace. Our Mother started her career in the Telephone Co. as an operator patching one party into the other party so they can just establish a conversation; before starting and dedicating her life to her family up till her very last breath. Later in life our Mother worked for the Jersey Journal in sales for many years. If you received a phone call during dinner time, that was our Mother. Then turning to her passion and what was ingrained into her soul of selflessly helping others who were suffering by becoming a Home Health Aide. Our Mother was deeply religious and said the Rosary and Prayed throughout the day. This goes back to her youth and a very sick Nun asked our Mother to Pray for her which she did very hard; the Nun got well and gave our Mother a small wooden statue of the Blessed Mother as a thank you gesture. Our Mother kept this statue for over 70 years. It is now going to be buried with her along with her favorite pair of Rosary Beads placed in her hands. This faith and her Polish power made her beat cervical cancer 21 years ago.
Cherished Grandmother of Johnathan and Andrew (A.J.) Shannon. Our Mother the Matriarch of the family is survived by her five loving sisters; Carole Ann (Husband Michael Zazzarino), Irene, Margaret “Peggy” (deceased life partner Dominic Lupo), Barbara and Cheryl Ann “Sherry” (Husband Mark Paterno). Our Mother’s husband is Robert E. Shannon Sr. Our Mother’s Aunt Joan (Milczarski) Solicitto is the eldest member of the family’s mighty oak tree plus our Mother’s many nieces, nephews, cousins and Godchildren. Our Mother was predeceased by her parents John Sr. and Mary Janiszewski and her two brother’s John Jr “Jackie” (surviving wife Ana “Anita”) and Robert.
Our Mother’s request was to have a private viewing. The Mass will be held from 10:30-11:30am on Tuesday July 13th at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Roman Catholic Church on 39 East 22nd St. in Bayonne. Burial will follow at 12pm at Holy Cross Cemetery on 340 Ridge Rd in North Arlington N.J.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, details about their life, and information about the funeral or memorial service.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, while also providing a sense of closure and allowing people to pay their respects. They also provide a historical record of a person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and researchers.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication. Some newspapers have online submission forms, while others require you to contact them directly. Be sure to check the publication's website or contact their obituary department for specific guidelines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length of the notice, and any additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $1,000 or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and in their own words. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life that you're not sure how to address in the obituary, it's best to err on the side of caution and focus on celebrating their positive qualities and achievements.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial contributions in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person who has passed away and support a worthy cause.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication and their deadlines. Typically, expect 1-5 business days for online publications and 2-7 business days for print newspapers.

If you discover an error in a published obituary, contact the publication immediately to request a correction. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the notice with corrections.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary at a later date (e.g., on the anniversary of the person's passing), you'll need to check with the original publication for their policies on republication.

Are online obituaries permanent records?

In most cases, online obituaries are archived permanently and remain accessible through search engines and online databases. This provides a lasting tribute to the person who has passed away.

Can I create my own online memorial or tribute page?

Yes! Many websites offer tools and platforms for creating personalized online memorials or tribute pages. These can be a beautiful way to celebrate someone's life and share memories with others.

How do I handle condolences and messages from readers?

You can include information in the obituary about where condolences can be sent (e.g., email address, mailing address, online guestbook). You can also set up a memorial fund or charity page for those who wish to make donations in memory of the person who has passed away.

What if I'm struggling with writing an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to emotional reasons, consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member. You can also reach out to a professional writer or counselor for guidance and support.
