Born on February 4, 1932, to the late Haskell and Avo Herren Burgess, Doris's life was a tapestry of strong family ties, faith in God, unwavering work ethic, and a generosity of spirit that touched everyone she knew.
A lifelong resident of Putnam County, Doris was the cherished wife of the late Armon Reece Nash, with whom she shared 69 years of marriage, exemplifying enduring love and companionship. She was a loving mother, guiding her family with a gentle hand and a resilient heart, always placing their needs above her own. Doris was predeceased by her son, Reece Nash; her brother, Donnie V. Burgess; and her son-in-law, Hollis Brown.
Left to honor her memory and carry forward her legacy are her devoted daughter, Camilla Brown, of Baxter; her daughter-in-law, Frida Nash (Eddie) Gaw, of Cookeville; her granddaughters, Christina (Jon) Slemp and Kimberly Nash, both of Baxter; her grandson, Carl Reece Nash, of Baxter; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Maggie and Lilly Slemp, Mackenzie, Ryder, and Bodhi Nash, who will miss her immensely yet remember her fondly for the love she showered upon them.
Doris was a graduate of Baxter Seminary. Her career was a reflection of her commitment to her community, having served with compassion as a teacher's aide at Baxter Elementary School and as a bus driver for Putnam County Schools. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as an owner of Cookeville Boat Dock, where she also became a legendary pie maker at the Lighthouse Restaurant. Doris was known for her hardworking nature and her insistence on excellence, qualities that earned her the respect and admiration of all who worked with her.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Doris's interests painted the picture of a woman who embraced the joys of life. An avid fisher, she could often be found at Center Hill Lake, basking in the serenity of nature. She was a skilled rook and spades player, delighting in the camaraderie and challenge of the game. Travel held a special place in her heart, as she was always eager to explore new places. Above all, Doris was recognized for being a loving, caring, and considerate person, extending her kindness to everyone she encountered.
Those who knew Doris will remember her as a loving, generous, and friendly soul, whose presence could light up a room. Her welcoming smile was one of her most remarkable traits. Doris's life was a reflection of her values: love of God and family, dedication to her work, and generosity towards her community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her, and her memory will be cherished forever.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Nash Grove Baptist Church. Bro. Gary West will officiate. Interment will follow in the Martin Family Cemetery. Her family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
Jonathan Aboushi, Brent Bradford, Larry Dunn, Nelson Lafever, Perry Nash, Ross Nash, Rick Naylor, and Chris Simmons will serve as pallbearers.

Obituary Preview: Funeral services for Mr. George Earl Hall, age 73 of Cookeville, will be held Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at 1:00 pm in the Dyer chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will follow in the Elmore-Richardson Cemetery in Baxter.
His family will receive friends Wednesday 11:00 am until service time at the funeral home.
Mr. Hall died Sunday December 10, 2023 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 24, 1950 in Sparta, TN to the late Bedford Carl Hall and Zelma Spivey Hall. He was a 1968 graduate of the former Dibrell High School near McMinnville. He proudly served his county in the United States Navy.
George worked at Nielson Bainbridge in Gainesboro in various roles for many years. He had a great personality and was easy going and kind hearted. He enjoyed watching television, spending time outdoors and traveling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley G. Herron Hall; brother, Joe Hall; daughter in law, Beth Cronk; brother in law, JB Wilhite; and by a nephew, Brian Hall.
George is survived by companion, Judy Wiley; a sister, Ruth Wilhite; stepchildren, Timmy Cronk, Jan (Greg) Keen, Tammy (Roy) King, Michelle Herron and Rhonda (Jerry) Peek; nephews including, Rudy Wilhite and Troy Wilhite; sister in law, Lois Hall; and by step grandchildren.
Rudy Wilhite, Troy Wilhite, Ken Martin, Roy King, Cody Wilhite and Freddy Bivins will serve as pallbearers.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Diana Joan (Nelson) Whitener passed away peacefully at Cookeville Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. She was born on June 11, 1940, in Turlock, California, to the late Sydney Bror Nelson and Agnes (Mostrom) Nelson.
Mrs. Whitener was a 1958 graduate of Hilmar High School. She loved playing trumpet in the band and being a majorette.
Following high school, Mrs. Whitener studied at Modesto Junior College before choosing a career as a bank teller, which she enjoyed doing for many years.
Mrs. Whitener had many loves: her family, growing up on the farm, her Morgan horse Babe, her cats Sammy and Callie, and traveling.
She met and married the love of her life, Oren B. Whitener II, in 1962. They celebrated 48 years of marriage before his passing in 2011.
Mrs. Whitener was preceded in death by her brothers, Eric Nelson (Shirley), Ed Nelson (Ronnie), and Teddy Nelson (age 3); sisters, Bertha Larsson (Albert) and Martha King (Ben); nephew, Doug Nelson (Susie) and niece, Caren Nelson Griggs.
Mrs. Whitener is survived by her daughter, Leslie Ann Crockett of Ossian, Indiana; granddaughter, Briana Marie Crockett (Chase Brown); son, Oren Bickett Whitener III of Breckenridge Hills, Missouri; granddaughter, Nicole Elizabeth Whitener; great-granddaughters, Kaia, Jade and Eva; and grandson, Justin Bickett Whitener. She is also survived by nieces, Kathy Nelson James, Barbara Nelson Reed, Gloria Nelson London, Lori Nelson Godfrey, LaLonie Nelson Tipton; nephews Eric Nelson, Gary Larsson, and Dennis Larsson.
Memorial services will be held at 1pm on Saturday, August 19th at the Dyer Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner. Chaplin Kelly Stockton will officiate. Her family will receive friends from 12pm until service time.

He was born August 16, 1929 in Baxter, Tennessee to the late Thomas "Tomie" and Ida Johnson. Bernes was married to his late, loving wife of 65 and a half years, Anna Frances Johnson.
Bernes is survived by his children: Robert (wife, Tricia Marie) Johnson, Thomas (wife, Debbie) Johnson, and Patricia (husband, Van) Gilbert. His grandchildren: Jacob Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Kensey Johnson, Kelly Johnson, Deanna Keierleber, Laura Smith, Katie Current, Emily Nason, and Robert Stice. Also, his great-grandchildren: Moses Keierleber, Harper Lake Keierleber, Remington Current, Kaius Current, Malcolm Johnson, and Ayla Johnson. He is also survived by his devoted caregiver, Darnell Jarrett.
Bernes was a veteran of the United States Airforce. After military service, he spent much of his professional career working for Grace Chemical and Kimberly-Clark Corporation. Bernes was a faithful member of Somerville Church of Christ and previously of Gragg Ave. Church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee. His retirement was full of service to his local church, traveling, enjoying his hobby farm in Somerville, and lavishly loving his friends and family.
Services will be held at the Somerville Church of Christ on Saturday, December 17th with visitation from 12pm – 2pm and funeral service to follow at 2pm. A second service will be held at the Baxter Church of Christ on Sunday, December 18th with visitation 12pm -2pm and funeral service at 2pm. Interment will be at Smellage Cemetery immediately following the service on Sunday afternoon. Memorial gifts are requested to be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org) and Hope Springs International (www.hopespringsint.com)

She also took great joy in her role as Meme to six grandchildren: Kate Spears (Phillip) of Knoxville, Zack Whittaker of Cookeville, Will Putman (Cappi) of Rickman, Ayla Whittaker of Cookeville, Hannah Wright (Shawn) of Cookeville, and Brody Whittaker (Maria) of Knoxville. Doris was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Peyton Whittaker, Elsie & Sutton Wright, Elli & Milli Putman, and Easton Young.
Doris filled many other roles in her life: loving sister-in-law to Brenda Hampton and Ron & Connie Whittaker, as well as caring aunt to Chris Hampton, Chad Whittaker, and Courtney Gallaher. Her love extended to Jacie Young (Josh), Jenna Redmond, Brian Myers, Jonathan Myers (Courtney), and many others who were blessed by knowing her.

Billie was a member of the Church of Christ.
He retired as a automotive mechanic with Montgomery Ward after many years of service. He enjoyed "tinkering" around with things, was a "Mr. Fix-it". Bilie was a determined man with a big heart and enjoyed friends and family, especially the grandkids.
Survivors include daughter Lisa Lafever of Warren, MI, sons Keith Lafever of Murfreesboro and David Lafever of Macomb, MI, 4 grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Frances Mason Gibson, age 77, of Cookeville, Tennessee passed peacefully into the waiting arms of her Savior on June 14, 2024 at NHC of Cookeville. Fran was born in Louisville, Kentucky.
She put God and her family first. She stayed home to raise her daughter, Heather. She was an avid organic gardener and animal lover riding Hunter Jumper horses, raising chickens, milking goats, and participating in saving animals through the Humane Society. Fran was also a part time church secretary and organist. Many days found her playing the piano and singing hymns. With her husband, George, of 58 years she loved various ministries such as food pantries, nursing home ministries, and sharing their faith with others.
At the age of 49, Fran graduated in 1995 from the University of Louisville with her BSN, RN. After moving to Tennessee in 1995, Fran began her nursing career with hospice and ended it with educating orthopedic patients regarding their procedures. Fran loved teaching people whether it was regarding their health, planting a garden, or making a deal at the grocery store.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents William Thomas Mason, Sr. and Gladys Loring Vanhooser Mason and brother William Thomas Mason, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband George Wallace Gibson and only child Heather Christine Gibson and her sister Barbara Kay Parrish. She will be missed.

David was a man after God’s own heart. He loved worshipping and praising his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. David loved his family and cherished and encouraged each person individually. He loved finding any reason to celebrate and enjoy life with friends and family. David was always generous and found his greatest joy in blessing others. He was a dreamer and loved helping others find their dream too. Through his two main careers as a financial planner and real estate agent, he spent his time and energy helping others. He also loved hunting, listening to gospel music, eating delicious food, playing cards and marbles, and traveling much as he possibly could. David was a proud Tennessee Tech alumni and US Army veteran.
David was born in Aux Caye, Haiti to missionary parents, Charles and Doris Barrett. He grew up in Birchwood, TN with his brother Charles Barrett (Sue) and sister Kathy McCabe (Gary). He was happily married to the love of his life, Joan Ashburn Barrett, for 54 years. He is the father to Becky Barrett Terry (Craig) and Kenny Barrett (Lauren). He has six grandchildren: Ashley Streeter Thompson (Tyler), Barrett Streeter (Ashlyn), Ava Barrett, Brennley Barrett, Everley Barrett, and Reed Barrett. He also has two great grandchildren: Paisley Thompson and Ace Thompson.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 13 from 4:00 -7:00 PM at Dyer Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Home on Willow Avenue followed by a time for sharing stories and memories by anyone who wishes to speak. Visitation again Friday, June 14 from 12:00 - 1:00 PM at Stevens Street Baptist Church with a worship service starting at 1:00 PM. David will be laid to rest following the worship service at Dobbs Cemetery in Baxter.
Three organizations that David loved giving to are Heart of the Cumberland, www.heartofthecumberland.org; Tennessee Tech BCM, www.tntechbcm.com; and Stevens Street Baptist Church Building Fund, www.stevensstreet.org. Any donations made to one of these in David's memory would be special to the family.
