Arthur Parra - November 02, 1951 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (San Antonio)
Obituary Preview: Retired First Sergeant Arthur Parra, 72, of San Antonio, Texas was called back home to Heaven on Monday April 22nd just before sunrise.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51.9 years, Barbara Grijalva Parra (76), daughter Cynthia Parra (51), son Arthur V. Parra (47), and daughter Jamie Parra (42). Arthur has left the next generation to 12 grandchildren: Anthony A. Meri (28), Vicente B. Meri (24), Jonathan V. Parra (22), Cerenity Walker (18), Brandon & Madeline Walker (17), Zachery Walker (15), Daunte Walker (13), Enjoli V. Parra (13), Benicio V. Parra (12), Ruby C. Parra (11), Gabriel Walker (10) and 1 great grandson, Anthony A. Meri, Jr. (5). In addition, Arthur has 1 daughter-in-law, Donna Meri (50), and 1 son-in-law, Mario A. Meri (52).
Arthur Parra grew up in East Los Angeles, California where he attended El Rancho High School. Unfortunately, he never graduated because he got tired of school, and was not learning anything new. He dropped out of school and decided to enlist in the United States Army. He’d rather die fighting in Vietnam than to die on the streets of East L.A. As fate intervened, he was stationed at Walter Reed where he met and married the love of his life. Turns out they both enlisted on the same day, both were from California, and both met at their first duty station. Arthur & Barbara then dated for 3 months before they married in May 1972.
● 1970 – 1972 Arthur completed basic training at Fort Ord, California. Then went to Fort Sam Houston, Texas for Dental school & AIT. Once the course was completed, he was assigned to the ADL for awhile until his next duty station ADL Walter Reed, Washington DC. ● 1973 – 1977 Stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas ● 1977 – 1981 Stationed at Bad Kreuznach, Germany ● 1981 – 1984 Stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri ● 1984 – 1993 Stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas ● 1993 – Retired at Fort Sam Houston, Texas after serving 22.5 years for the United States Army ● 1993 – Present Arthur lived a busy life after retirement with owning 3 businesses until his health deteriorated, leaving him disabled in San Antonio, Texas
Arthur Parra has several proud moments in his life: in 1989, he attended the Sergeant Major Academy in Fort Bliss, Texas, and graduated Class of 32. Proud of the birth of his children, grandchildren, and his great grandson. If you asked him, “Who delivered Jamie?”, he’d proudly state that he did and that his name should be on the birth certificate as the doctor was too busy scrubbing in and Jamie pretty much flew out. Then he’d proudly exclaim that he caught her like a football! Arthur was also proud to have shared the same birthday as his grandson, Anthony A. Meri. The most prideful moment of his life was marrying the love of his life, Barbara G. Parra.
Arthur might’ve had struggles, but he continued to live life to the very fullest. Supporting his family, being an amazing carpenter, collecting German clocks and repairing them too. He was a handy person, and there was nothing he couldn’t do. Willing to do anything for his family, friends, and soldiers. That’s what made Arthur Parra a great man that walked this Earth.
Arthur Parra is best described as a stern individual who found and took every opportunity to teach lessons about life whenever it arose. You could point to an object, and he would have a story or a lesson about it. He was a teacher, a mentor, and a storyteller. Full of stories that he experienced, learned, and sought to teach it to those who come after. He’d also find opportunities to tell his jokes, sharing his contagious laughter with everyone around, befriending anyone and everyone with his jollity. Whenever he’d talk to someone, it was like he was talking to an old friend, this is the friendliness that he exuded, and it was incredible. He will be deeply missed, never forgotten and always loved…

Brenda Whitaker - September 10, 1965 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (San Antonio)
Obituary Preview: Brenda Joyce Whitaker was born on September 10, 1965 to Claude Luckey and Doris Hudspeth in San Antonio, TX. She was the 11th of 12 children. She is preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Whitaker. She is survived by her daughter Brittany Whitaker (Fiancé Raphael Johnson), grandson Jayce Johnson, granddaughter Jade Johnson, sisters Carol Dixon and Linda Luckey, brothers Vernon Hudspeth Jr. (Almetra), Edward Hudspeth (Margaret), Allen Luckey, and Jackie Hudspeth, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Brenda, affectionately known as “Ben” by one of her big brothers, symbolized her dedication to her God Jehovah by water baptism at the age of 18. Immediately following her graduation from high school, Brenda fulfilled her goal of becoming a regular pioneer, a full-time minister. She and her sister-in-law, Patricia, also regularly participated in “quick-build” Kingdom Hall construction projects in San Antonio and surrounding cities. Brenda was also known to love singing Kingdom melodies, especially with her friends.
In high school, Brenda studied horticulture, the art of garden cultivation. This sparked a love of gardening that would remain a joy of hers throughout her life. She also loved to cook. She was never afraid to try a difficult or extravagant recipe - and they usually turned out to be delicious! She took great delight in watching others enjoy the food she prepared. Not only did she love to extend hospitality by preparing meals for her family and friends, she also cooked professionally for over 30 years. In her most recent roles, she managed the cafeterias at both Sam Houston High School and Fox Tech High School.
Brenda also had a reputation for being generous. Linda fondly remembers her big sister always checking in on her to make sure she had everything she needed, even as an adult. Brenda was also generous with members of her spiritual family, even to the extent of sharing her home with a pioneer in need. Many remember her for her kind demeanor and warm smile.
Although Brenda battled several health problems over the years, the Bible’s promise of life on a paradise earth brought her much joy. She looked forward to being able to play with lions and tigers and working in her garden with no aches and pains. In the same way, we also eagerly await the fulfillment of Jehovah’s promises, and we take comfort in the knowledge that Christ Jesus will soon bring back to life “all those in the memorial tombs.” - John 5:28, 29.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and attend if they wish.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or cremation service may offer assistance with writing the obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include a brief summary of their life achievements, hobbies, and interests.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?
