Obituary Preview: Wilma Mercer (Crosston), 84, passed away 4/17/2024. Born in Fairmont, West Virginia to the late Amos and Lucille Crosston (Wilson). She lived most of her life in the Akron area.

She spent time in PA as a cook for Lakeview High School, then returned to Akron and worked in manufacturing until she retired. She was an avid reader, loved gardening, animals and fishing. She spent many hours with family and friends playing cards and going to bingo.

Wilma was a beautiful soul; a kind and loving mother and everyone's favorite aunt. She was quick witted, easy to talk to and just ornery enough to surprise you.

She is survived by daughter and son in law Joyce and Michael Flanagan; her sister Jackie (Jerry) Hill and a host of nieces and nephews she loved dearly.

Preceded in death by infant twin boys Richard and James Breedlove; brothers Wilburt, Frank and John; sisters Betty, Beatrice and Mary.

A celebration of life gathering will be held for family and friends Monday 4/22/2024 from 5 to 7pm at Dunn Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant St. Akron, OH). Cremation has already taken place.

peacefully on February 20th 2024 at the age of 73. Paddy was born in Akron, OH on November 5th 1950 to Floyd and Marilyn Taylor. A Wildcat Graduate of Central High School in Akron in 1968, he went on to play music with The Business Blues Band, Fergie and the Bog Dogs, the Akron Ceili Band, and the Deep South Akron All Stars while working at various jobs in construction and retail sales. Known as Paddy in the Irish American Community and long time member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Akron, he formed the Akron Celtic Guards Hurling and Camogie Club in 2003 and could be found proudly

sporting a Cork GAA Jersey at any event. Paddy was preceded in death by his parents, brother Thomas, sister Lorene, and grandchild Reed. He is survived by his wife Deborah of 39 years, his children Ann (Kevin) Verde, Alyssa Taylor, Tara (Todd) Compher, and Patrick (Coleen) Taylor, and his grandchildren Aidan, Ben, Grace, Rory, Dylan, and Maddox. He is also survived by his brothers Lawrence, Michael, and

Paul, and his many friends that he has made along the way. We love you, Dad. Give ‘em the blizzard! The Family would like to thank University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and the Acute Palliative Care Unit at Summa Hospital in Akron for their compassionate care throughout Dad’s battle and providing comfort in his final days. Theresa retired from Summit County Weaver School.

Graveside service will be at Holy Cross Cemetery on Friday, February 16, at 11:00am with Father Michael Williamson officiating.

A devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside on January 18, 2024.

John was born on January 7, 1951, to the late Frank and Rose (Gage) Simko in Akron, Ohio.  He grew up in Akron and moved to Manchester to raise his family in 1975.  John was a laborer for 54 years and worked out of Local 894 and retired in 2012.

John will be remembered for his love, passion and devotion for his entire family, his strong and fierce work ethic and most of all his beautiful pristine yard, flower beds and garden.  After retiring he loved shopping with his wife, playing golf, fishing and many games of Euchre and Poker with family & friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son Ryan, sister Barbara Mayer and brother Michael Simko.  He is survived by his loving wife, Georgia (Acquaviva) for 55 years; brothers, Frank and Dominic Simko;  brothers-in-law, Gary and Billy,  sisters-in-law, Maude, Cathy, Virginia, Kris and Carolyn;  his oldest son, John (Jody) Simko, his daughter, Monica (Norman) Yanik.  He also leaves grandsons, Nick, Justin, Vinny, and granddaughter, Sydney; and great grandson, Maddox.  and honorary grandkids, Adrienne and Logan. John was uncle and great uncle to many many nieces and nephews.

Left on earth to honor his memory include his wife, Dorothy “Dottie”, son, Tim (Heidi); daughters Kimberly, Kelly (Max), and Erin (Jeff); sisters, Patricia Callahan, Anne Marie Brown-Wood, Margaret Kaverman, and Mary Sandor; grandchildren, Katelin, Alison, Colin, Gavin, Michael and Emma, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Robert was a graduate of St. Mary High School and a faithful member of St. Vincent Church.

Affectionately known to most as “Bob Brown”, our dad was one of a kind. He had a big heart and a big personality. He loved polka music, supporting our local sports teams and he loved a good bargain. In his earlier days, you could find him at a bowling alley and playing horseshoes or cornhole. He loved to dance, he loved singing hymns and he enjoyed attending our annual family reunions. Above all, he was a loving, honest, and selfless man with a big heart. Rich in his faith, he found comfort in the Lord and believed strongly in the power of prayer. He started each day with his list of intentions, with his family always at the top of the list. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” was his life’s motto. He never held a grudge, he was always forgiving and he failed to see bad in people. He gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and refused to give up on anyone.

After retiring from 25 years of service as a salesman at Tasty Pure Foods, Bob spent his time focused on his family. Loving and devoted to his wife Dottie of 57 years, Bob worked tirelessly to be a good husband. He did the cooking and the shopping and was a wonderful provider and friend. He was a wonderful father. He loved chatting about our day and he never stopped worrying about us. He took great pride in being a grandfather and enjoyed hearing about his grandchildren’s accomplishments. He attended their sporting events when he was able and was always on time sending a birthday card. His birthday phone calls were a hit and always included a personalized rendition of “Happy Birthday”.

Over the last few months, Bob demonstrated much strength, courage, and perseverance. He worked very hard to overcome his daily challenges. He battled until the end and never gave up hope. Every day was a new day and every day was a day closer to getting better he thought. While that day never came, he never wavered. He stayed himself to the end and we couldn’t be more proud of him. He continued to lift us in prayer, make us smile with a phone call, make us laugh with a joke, and still took care of others. He always remained “Bob Brown” and that is how he will be remembered.

Calling hours will be on Friday, January 19th from 4-6 p.m. at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant Street). Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 20th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vincent Catholic Church.

Lorraine G. McDowell - April 13, 1926 - January 04, 2024

Obituary Preview: Lorraine graduated from Connellsville, PA High School in June of 1944. Her major was Business and the clubs she belonged to were Drama, Dance, Girl Reserves, Bridge and Etiquette.

After high school she moved to Akron where she was employed by Firestone Tire and Rubber. She was a data operator on a computer optical paper tape machine for six years until her retirement when she married.

She converted to Catholicism, married and had four children: Judy Mosser of Cuyahoga Falls, Tom (Cindy) of Akron, Bill (Elaine) of Cuyahoga Falls, Mary Ann (Ron) Fiedler of Uniontown. During these years she belonged to a church quilting club that made blankets for lepers in India. Later she made rosaries for missions, did lots of scrapbooking, learned how to drive and got her driver’s license at age of 62.

Her senior years were filled with meeting with friends, playing cards, participating in a bowling league, doing jigsaw puzzles, family gatherings, playing the organ, playing records of classical and pop music, and going to church rummage sales on the weekends.

But in the end, in spite of a short-term memory loss, she was still quick witted. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and enjoyed her grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be on Friday from 4 to 7pm and on Saturday from 8 to 9 am at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home (811 Grant St.). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Dr. Joseph Edward Maybury - November 02, 1928 - October 31, 2023

Obituary Preview: Dr. Joseph Edward Maybury passed away peacefully in his Deland, Florida home on Oct. 31, 2023. He was two days shy of his 95th birthday.

Born in Parkersburg, W. Va., on Nov. 2, 1928, Joseph epitomized the American dream.

A devout Catholic, he attended parochial school through grade 12. After high school, he attended Potomac State College, a two-year community college in Wheeling, W. Va. Upon completing his two-year degree, he transferred to West Virginia State University where he took his core science classes that qualified him to be accepted into Georgetown University’s School of Dentistry. He graduated in 1953.

Right out dental school, he entered the Air Force as a commissioned officer during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan from 1953 to 1955.

He was then stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. before entering the periodontology program at Tufts University. He received his certificate of periodontology in 1964.

He was stationed in Madrid, Spain until 1967. He became chair of the Department of Periodontology and Residency Program at Wright Patterson Air Force Base from 1967 to 1973. During his time at Wright Pat he was awarded fellowship into the American College of Dentists. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in October, 2023.

In 1973, he was transferred to Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland where he held the same position of chair of periodontology from 1973 to 1976.

He retired from the Air Force in 1976 as a lieutenant colonel and moved to Cleveland where he worked for 13 years half time in private practice and half time as an associate professor serving as director of the clinical residency program at Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry.

He served as president of the Greater Cleveland Dental Society and sat on the board of directors with the American Academy of Periodontology. He was on the Executive Council of the American Academy of Periodontology.

A longtime wine collector, Joseph belonged to many wine groups in the Cleveland area including the Les Amis du Vin and the Commanderie de Bordeaux. He also founded the Cleveland chapter of the Chaine de Rotisseurs. In 2000, he was inducted into the prestigious wine group the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in Beaune, France.

He retired in 1992 and moved to Hilton Head where he lived for 16 years. He moved to Deland to be near his much beloved parish, St. Thomas More church, where he was an active parishioner for nearly 20 years. An avid golfer, Joseph belonged to several golf clubs and golfed until his final year.

Joseph’s wife of 64 years, Nena Joan Maybury, preceded him in death in 2019. He is survived by his brother, Robert Maybury and his three daughters, Mary Margaret Maybury, Susan Elizabeth (James) Gutierrez and Rebecca Ann (Robert) Bompiedi; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Matthew) Laughlin, Nicholas (Julie) Devries, Alaina and Gina Bompiedi; and three great grandchildren, Cameron Devries, Eva and Kira Laughlin.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 13 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peregrine's Church in Richfield. Interment with military honors will take place at 2:15 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH. Please arrive at the cemetery before 2:00.

Gary was born on March 8, 1948, to his loving parents Ina (Loftis) and Dorse Quintrell. Throughout his life, Gary was a pillar of strength and compassion, always putting the needs of others before his own. His warm smile and kind heart touched the lives of many. On October 17,1983, Gary married the love of his life, Sue (Labay) Quintrell. Together for 46 years, their love and devotion were an inspiration to all who witnessed it. Their two children Ashley(Rocky), Dylan(Kelly) and grandkids, Rylie, Geno, Dominic, Paizlee, and his "fur ball" Jersey held a very special place in Gary's heart. Special memories of road trips, West Virginia reunions, camping & fishing times, metro park walks, reruns of the Andy Griffith show, as well as the Chipotle trip phone calls, and their speaker phone calls filled with jokes, funny stories, and reminiscing about "the old days."

As a retiree from Firestone Country Club, Gary loved to visit his son Dylan and daughter-in-law Kelly in Florida, go fishing, tend to his garden, visit his sister Sissy(Doreen) and Dennis Stump, family get togethers with Pat, Polly(Roger), Mike(Debbie), Ruthy, and so many other family members.

Gary will be remembered for his genuine kindness, his unwavering love for his family and friends, his funny stories, his jokes, his contagious laugh, and his zest for life. His legacy of love and compassion will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Gary hated dress clothes and requested everyone come in their everyday, comfortable clothes.

Obituary Preview: Richard “Dick” Breiding, 95, of North Hill passed away peacefully at home on October 14.

When your life starts as a farm boy on North Hill in 1928 and stretches across the Korean War (his mom swore the helmet caused his baldness), marrying a local girl and raising 12 children, you’re going to store up some interesting anecdotes. But he was more than the sum of those stories. Although he was a loving, devoted son, he also moved outhouses in the middle of the night, talked his little sisters, Norrie and Annie, into being tossed down the steps in a crate and tried getting out of early cow milking with his little brothers, Dave and Lenny (he would only eat cereal with the real deal cream). His father, Leonard, was his lifelong role model and his mother, Grace, always had his favorite treats no matter his age. Although Mom and Dad knew each other their whole life, they officially started dating on a blind date on which Dad thought he was going out with our Aunt Winnie. Thank goodness for that mistake – Liz and Dick were married for 69 years – still held hands and renewed their vows at every wedding and she got the first sip of every glass of pop. Dad and Mom started their life and then he went to serve in the Army 10 days later (always understated about his service) but not before they decided they were going to have 10 children – bonus 2 happened anyways! His love letters to mom during the war always ended with a plea for dry socks – a lifelong obsession with dry feet was the result. While working at the post office, he started the Breiding Lawn Service – thus began the early wake up hours, the 60 hour weeks and our weekend drives to go see the properties he cared for. He helped build the house he raised his family in – much appreciate for his contractor cousin’s skills – Dad wasn’t the handiest guy but nothing duct tape or bright paint couldn’t solve. Dad was so proud of that bright yellow house on Creighton Avenue! They lived across the street from Christ the King Catholic Church and School – his Catholic faith was a mainstay for him and his family. Dad played softball on the Christ the King team, was the president of the Holy Name, running fish fries and playing poker with the fellas after the clean-up. He was so proud that he and mom were able to send their kids to Christ the King and St. Vincent – St. Mary schools. He woke up the kids for early morning rosary and slept through many Hail Marys and Our Fathers – “decade” was a relative term – it was whatever he was awake for and the kids never pointed that out! Weekly mass was required and when he woke up, he’d look down the pew and wake up the boys. Mass attendance was rewarded with breakfast at Jack Horners, where it felt like everyone in the city of Akron knew our Dad. The kids would cringe throughout mass as he sang the loudest (he was tone deaf and literally, deaf, and was always one word or two behind), but he’d get the most excited when they played “Horse and Rider”. The road to Emmaus was his favorite story and he most strongly related to Paul and his struggles with faith.

Our childhood was marked by taking turns going to his Midway bowling league, winter time lunch specialties by dad (egg on toast), glasses of water on our heads to wake up, goofy windup toys for our birthdays, back of the pickup rides, trips to Orrville for mulch and gas station treats, Swenson's and Kentucky Fried Chicken deliveries at the end of long swimming days at Munroe Falls, the absolute knowledge that we would get end of day Friendly's if we saw Dad’s pick up pull into Munroe Falls, the daily phone call for milk and the ensuing frustration when he got the inevitable busy signal, his frustration with all the aforementioned milk spilling at every dinner and his ability to spill every glass at the table with a single pound of the table, single roses delivered to his daughters, daughters-in-law, granddaughters (especially on Mother’s Day), cringy toasts and speeches at family events, greeting friends and dates at the door in his boxers, Krispy Kreme donuts (he knew the owners of all the local donut shops), trips to Henry Bierce, teaching us poker and euchre games (got frustrated when mom never knew trump), yearly trips to Daytona Beach, getting ice cream to celebrate buying new cars and hiking at Sand Run.

He was always amused by the goofy antics of Timmy, Billy, Pete, Tommy and Joey but less amused by the middle of the night calls, “Well, Mr. Breiding, I have your son here…” His girls, Kathy, Winnie, Elizabeth, Chris, Bridget, Mary and Annie made up for the grief the boys caused.

His children passed on so many of these traditions to their 41 grandchildren and 25 great children. Dad may have been proud of his children, but he was most proud of his grandchildren and loved teasing them. They loved “crazy” grandpa and all his antics – “Prizes” from his curb shopping and rainy day garage sales with Grandma (usually painted bright green with stickers typically misspelling their names). He loved the babies – he’d hold the babies in ways that scared every new mom but always held them close, although we all probably have one arm longer than the other (he had an accident when they had 6 children that left him with limited use of one arm and he just never complained and it didn’t stop him from doing just about anything).

He read voraciously and loved history and understood its impact on things happening today. He was most happy outside in his garden. He loved a good game of poker but couldn’t stand the new fangled games Bill and his friends played, “let’s play real poker.” He loved and tolerated all the teasing from his Donohoe brothers-in -law (Ray, Pete, Chuck, Jack and Bill) while bowling, golfing and going out for family dinners. He loved the Guardians and took the older kids to Municipal Stadium, but probably hated the Yankees even more! He accepted the fate of the Browns every season and was surprised when they won. Life wasn’t simple or easy, but neither was Dad and now he’s back with Mom. But he would tell you his greatest accomplishment were his children, especially his favorite…

He was lovingly cared for by those children, but not without the incredibly loving support of his caretakers, Cheryl, Lisa, Joyce, Danielle and Rachel. The Breiding family cannot thank you enough for all the time and care you gave to our dad.
