Frances Mazza - March 31, 1928 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (New Britain)
Obituary Preview: Frances (Tomczewski) Mazza, 96, of New Britain, went home to Heaven on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Daughter of the late John and Agatha (Izdebska) Tomczewski, she was born on March 31, 1928, in New Britain and remained a lifelong resident. It is here that she met her husband, the late Thomas Mazza Jr. Frances was a member of St. Ann’s Church for many years. Fran was employed at the New Britain Spring Co., Fafnir Bearing Co., and CCSU until her retirement. Fran was always dressed to the nines, with her jewelry and brightly colored blouses. She always made sure she was the first in line at the hairdresser. Frans’ smile and laughter were contagious, and she always had a joke to tell, starting most of her conversations with, “Did I tell you the one about…”. And even up to her last days, she could remember a punch line better than any comedienne. Fran had a love for elephant knickknacks, that started when Tommy returned from overseas with a leather elephant. This one elephant began her collection of thousands!
Fran always kept busy after retirement with puzzles of all kinds, crocheting blankets for anyone who could use one, playing bingo, reading uplifting and inspiring stories, coloring, and painting. She enjoyed her visits and phone calls with family and friends.
While Fran did not have any children of her own, she leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces, and nephews, and two great-great-great nephews, that she always considered her own. She leaves many people who thought of her as their “Mom”.
Fran is predeceased by her beloved husband, and her siblings: Ann Chorzempa, Victoria DeJohn, Florence Haze, Nellie Hnatt, Jean Pasqual, John Tomczewski, Andrew Tomczewski and several brother and sister-in-laws.
Fran’s family would like to thank the staff of HOCC on N4, for their loving care. And a huge thank you, to Fran’s “Special Angels” at Bel-Air Manor.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, May 8th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Burritt Hill, 332 Burritt St., New Britain. On Thursday, May 9th a Funeral Service will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Burritt Hill Funeral Home. Kathleen A. Kilduff - March 04, 1956 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (New Britain)
Obituary Preview: The family of Kathleen Kilduff sadly acknowledges that their beloved Kathy has passed away. Kathleen was born in New Britain on March 4, 1956 and died peacefully on April 17, 2024, surrounded by her family.
She was the daughter of the late Edward J. Kilduff, Jr. and Nancy (Place) Kilduff, lifetime residents of New Britain. Kathy attended New Britain public schools and was afforded the opportunity to train and become a draftsman at the Fafnir Bearing Company where she worked for many years.
Kathy married Zbigniew “Ed” Kopowski in 1982 and together they welcomed three sons, Alexander, Matthew, and Benton. Ed predeceased Kathy in 2005. When Kathy returned to the workforce, she turned to her true passion which was dogs. She had always aspired to become a veterinarian so it was no surprise that she went to work for the Animal Hospital of Berlin. Her knowledge of the different breeds and her natural ability to connect with animals was practically legendary. She was a compassionate person who would often reach out to comfort those who were mourning the loss of their pet. In addition to being a true dog lover, Kathy had a special fondness for horses and was an experienced rider. She was in her happy place whenever she was inside a stable, working at the animal hospital, grooming dogs, or pet sitting for friends.
But Kathy’s first and most endearing love was “her boys”. She took great delight in getting involved with their activities and hobbies, and as her son Alex recently said, “Even when times were tough, Mom always made sure that we had what we needed.” Ben echoed the same sentiment. Kathy suffered the biggest heartache of her life when she lost her son Matthew in 2022. And now she leaves behind her other two beloved sons; Alexander Kopowski, his partner Rebecca Williams, and their son Kane Kopowski (New Britain); Benton Kopowski and his partner Paige Lewis (Middletown).
Kathy also leaves behind her brother Calvin Kilduff and his wife Candace (New Britain); her sister Linda Malik and her husband Robert (Cheshire); her sister Kelly Lamontagne and her husband Richard (Newington); along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and the many dear friends that she acquired throughout her lifetime. She was especially close to Olga Marchion, her dearest friend for over forty years, right up to the time of Kathy’s passing. Also left behind is her husband of eight years, Robert Kryszak (New Britain), and her beloved dog Charlie. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, April 28 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Burritt Hill, 332 Burritt St., New Britain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Monday, April 29, 2024. Please meet the family directly at the church. Memorial donations can be made to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1755 Stanley St, New Britain, CT 06053. To share a message of sympathy with her family, please visit us at www.duksa.net

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to notify others of a person's death and provide information about their life, achievements, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to honor and celebrate the person's life, share memories, and provide details about funeral or memorial services.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are typically written by family members, close friends, or a funeral home staff member. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-250 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still need to add or modify information after your passing.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help capture the person's spirit and make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish obituaries within hours or days of submission, while others may have a longer delay due to editorial review processes or print schedules.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication. However, this may depend on the specific policies of the newspaper or online platform.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the person's passing, you can opt for a private or restricted-access obituary. Some online platforms offer password-protected options or limited visibility settings.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just be sure to verify copyright permissions if necessary.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain historical records. Many genealogy websites also offer access to archived obituaries.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died long ago?

Absolutely! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and preserve their legacy for future generations.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be an emotional task. If you're finding it challenging, consider seeking help from a friend, family member, or professional writer. You can also look up examples online for inspiration.

This depends on the publication or online platform. Some may allow links to memorial websites, fundraising campaigns, or social media profiles.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an already-published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately. They will work with you to correct the errors as soon as possible.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?
