Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They provide an opportunity to celebrate the person's life, share memories, and offer condolences to those who are grieving.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include information about their hobbies, interests, and achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You can usually find guidelines on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some may offer free listings, while others may charge by the word or line. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to understand their pricing structure.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in a way that is meaningful to you.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or quotes can help to capture the personality of the deceased and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private details about the deceased that you prefer not to share publicly, it's best to omit them from the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than revealing personal struggles or challenges.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, this is a common practice. By specifying a charity or cause that was important to the deceased, you can encourage donations in their memory rather than receiving flowers.

How do I proofread an obituary for errors?

Carefully review the obituary for spelling, grammar, and factual errors before submitting it for publication. Ask multiple people to review it as well to catch any mistakes.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a anniversary of the person's passing or other significant date, you may be able to do so with permission from the original publication or platform.

What if I need to make corrections to an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published as soon as possible to request corrections. They may be able to update the online version or issue a correction in a subsequent print edition.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with others who are grieving. You can share a link to the online obituary or create your own post with details about the person's life and legacy.

How do I handle condolences and messages from readers?

You can specify in the obituary how people can express condolences, such as through a memorial website, email address, or physical mailing address. Be prepared for an outpouring of support and take time to respond to messages as needed.

Can I include information about memorial services or celebrations of life in an obituary?

Absolutely! This information helps inform friends and family about opportunities to pay their respects and celebrate the person's life.

How do I ensure that an online obituary remains available over time?

Some online platforms archive obituaries indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform about their policies regarding archiving and accessibility.

Can I use an obituary as part of a memorial service or celebration of life?

Yes! An obituary can serve as a starting point for creating a memorial service program or display board. You can also read it aloud during the service as a way of honoring the deceased.
