Leo P. Shepard - June 04, 1947 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Cohoes)
Obituary Preview: Leo Paul Shepard Jr. “Shep” Malta, NY
If you are reading this then you know I am in paradise with Jesus and I wanted to tell you my own story because no one knows it better than myself.
I started my journey on this earth June 4, 1947 the oldest of three siblings born to Leo Shepard Sr and Margaret Shepard. Three years later my beautiful sister Lyn joined our family and then 3 years after that my amazing brother Ron rounded out our family. We sadly lost our dear brother Ron in his early 20’s which was a great loss to our family.
Although born in New York City we moved to Cohoes, NY where I spent all of my childhood years. As a child I was always playing sports including Football, Baseball, Soccer, Judo and Weightlifting. This led me to having the opportunity to participate in the junior Olympics for powerlifting and play semi-professional football.
After graduating from Cohoes High, the first of many blessings came into my life, my first born Dan. Shortly after Dan was born my first professional adventure began with the opening of my corner bar ‘Shep’s Tavern’ in Cohoes. I loved that bar and made many lifelong friends.
After owning Shep’s Tavern for many years I had the opportunity to help open Reflections East Disco in Watervliet. Going from a corner bar to a disco took some getting used to especially having to wear a suit with a ruffled tuxedo shirt daily! It was here that God brought through the door a beautiful woman who would become the love of my life for 44 years! Kim and I were married September 12, 1982 and she forever changed my life. We were blessed to have a beautiful son, Jason and a couple years later my princess Meaghan was born. At this point I had a loving wife, three children and a successful career and thought my life was complete. However, I soon realized that the night club life was not the life for raising children and decided to start another adventure in the food service business. This new adventure brought our family from Cohoes to Malta, NY and gave us the opportunity to own our own businesses as well as gave me the opportunity to be the general manager of Friendly Restaurants and Golden Corral as well as the food service director for SUNY Albany and Skidmore college where I retired from. Similar to my years at Shep’s Tavern and Reflections, the food service business gave me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and make many more lifelong friends.
I tried the retiring thing for about 3 months and unsurprising to all it was not for me! I began working at Northeast Courier doing something I loved doing…driving and singing along to great music! I was very thankful for this job and did it up until a few months ago.
Although my professional career was successful, I was even prouder of my other full-time job which was being a father. Spending countless hours coaching, attending practices, games, school functions and basically anything my children were involved in brought me such joy and great memories.
I will try and wrap this up and tell you about the last 11 years of my life. My son Jason and daughter in law Amy blessed us with the most beautiful three grandchildren a man could ever ask for. Nora, Grant and Evelyn are the loves of my life. Just when I thought I was blessed beyond measure my daughter Meaghan blessed us with the sweetest little girl, Taylor. I could now say with certainty that my life was complete and I spent the rest of my life making beautiful memories swimming with them, attending their games and making sure they knew I loved them more than life itself.
If you are still reading this and I pray you are, I need to tell you about a very important part of my life. With much prayer from Kim, she convinced me to attend the church her and my children attended. It was there that I gave my life to Christ and will forever be grateful to Greater Grace Community Church and Pastor David Moore for leading me to my salvation almost 25 years ago.
In March of 2020, life gave me a curveball when I found out I had pancreatic cancer. Like all challenges I’ve received in my life I fought this challenge head on for four years which included a 10 hour surgery and 74 rounds of chemo. Although these four years had its challenges, I praise God that he allowed me to handle it all so well and was able to still work, enjoy my beautiful family and make so many lasting memories for me and them. Over the last month, although my mind was as sharp as ever my body was getting tired and I spent my final days at home surrounded by my family and I peacefully fell asleep and went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2024.
Last but not least I need to mention my lifelong friends that I will miss dearly; Gary Oliver, Al Aubin, Bob Signoracci, Jack Oliver and Mike Fitzgerald. I also want to thank the staff at Saratoga Oncology for all you did to give me more time with my family and my endocrinologist and friend of 20 years Dawn Dluge-Aungst.
I want to thank you all for taking the time to read this. Thank you for making this life more than I could have ever dreamed and I hope I added joy, laughter and probably a big hug or two to your life. Please remember there is “Nothing Stronger than Family” and no matter what is going on in your life “every day your feet hit the ground is a good day”.
My prayer is all my friends and family find the joy and peace I did once I gave my life to Christ and join me in heaven where I will welcome you with a giant hug. I love you all.
Funeral services will be held at the DUFRESNE FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 216 Columbia Street, Cohoes on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 10:00am. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Waterford. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7pm.

Ellen Parker - October 22, 1952 - January 20, 2024

Departed: 01/20/2024 (Cohoes)
Obituary Preview: Cohoes – On the morning of January 20, 2024, Ellen Parker, 71, sadly passed away from us in the warm comfort of her home. To the end, she was surrounded by the unwavering love and faithful care of her dearest family. Ellen, a lifelong resident of Cohoes, was born on October 22, 1952, the youngest of two daughters born to Anthony “Tony” and Mildred Harrison Standarski. She was predeceased by both of her parents, including her mother who tragically passed away many years earlier when Ellen was just an adolescent. Tragic though the passing of her mother was, Tony (a veteran of World War 2) incredibly survived the rearing of two teenage daughters in the 1960’s and lived to watch Ellen raise two sons with her loving husband, Donald. Ellen surely inherited some remarkable characteristics from her father. For example, those who knew Ellen surely knew her to be strong-willed, resilient, and possessed of a steadfast resolve-especially with regards to the care of those she loved. She fiercely, and (thankfully) without judgment loved her sons Jarrod and Derek. She also grew to love her daughter-in-law Lindsay, as a child of her own. Although Ellen ultimately lost a prolonged battle with cancer, it was this tenacity of character that carried her through this struggle. Just several short months after receiving news of her terminal illness in 2018 her beloved granddaughter Piper was born, who she held in esteem above all else. With steady, reliable, and loving caregiving of her husband, Don, Ellen navigated the wearisome journey of her illness to so proudly continue wearing that noble mantle of “Grandma, gracious receiver of sticky hugs and collector of finger paint masterpieces.” Ellen earned an Associate Degree after completing high school and worked full time until she was forced to medically retire in 2018. Though she was a valuable asset to several small, local businesses throughout her career, work did not define her. Though she was never particularly outspoken nor sought to be the center of attention, Ellen was always an engaged, important member of her community. In much the same way that she would never fail to vote in an election, she’d also be absolutely sure to whip up a lasagna for a campground block party. Of course, she also had some fun in her spare time, as many years’ worth of stories from her bowling league prove to be the case. Ellen was at once both frugal and fashionable with impeccable taste-one of her favorite pastimes was searching garage sales for some treasure in need of a little creative love to restore its luster. Ellen was a lover of nature and appreciator of beauty. For nearly 40 years, she and Don have maintained a cherished camp in Schroon Lake that they have enjoyed retreating to on weekends and holidays. As an introspective person, Ellen could often be found enjoying a novel by the fire or assembling a puzzle with a good glass of wine in quiet reflection. Though she was not perhaps outgoing by definition, she was a witty conversationalist who enjoyed humor. She was always glad to visit with longtime friends, just as she was happy to make new ones. An ally and confidant to those she held close-her calm, steady presence helped her serve as something of a guiding light in even the most difficult of nights. Though her loss leaves a gap that will not so easily be filled, so too does her memory bring light that can not so easily fall away to dark. Among those carrying the light of Ellen’s memory in her absence, she is survived by her husband of 42 years, Donald “Don” Parker, her son and daughter-in-law Jarrod and Lindsay (and their daughter Piper), her son Derek, her sister Joanne Couch, her sisters-in-law Mary Parker and Donna Pyskadlo, her nieces Jennifer, Robin and Lisa (as well as great-niece and great-nephews Aubrey, Rocco and Roman). Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 4:00pm at the DUFRESNE FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 216 Columbia Street, Cohoes, NY. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 2 to 4pm prior to the service. Memorial donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.

Jane Hsu - April 24, 1938 - December 23, 2023

Departed: 12/23/2023 (Cohoes)
Obituary Preview: Jane Ching-Yeng Huang Hsu, formerly of Forest Hills NY, passed peacefully out of this life on December 23, 2023, at the age of 85, due to complications of congestive heart failure and dementia. She was at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY, surrounded by her loving family.
A giving, generous spirit, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother; a respected teacher and research associate; an accomplished entrepreneur and businessperson; and a fierce patriot and staunch defender of the country of her birth, Taiwan, and of her adopted homeland, the United States. The last of 12 children born to Shin Kwei Huang and Suan Chen of Chong Lun Tou Chen in Yi-lan County on April 24, 1938, Jane was a proud eighth-generation Taiwanese raised in the Huang family compound with extended family. Jane grew up steeped in that brave nation’s traditions and history, learning about the blood and sweat that her ancestors poured into its land. In the 1700’s, her male forebears emigrated there from Zhang Zhou, Fukien, China and intermarried with native Taiwanese women. “We are not the offspring of the Southern Barbarian, the offspring of the worms inside the doors, nor the offspring of the Yellow Emperor,” she declared. “We are a mixture of Han Chinese and Austronesian-speaking peoples.”
Her ancestors worked the land by hand, cutting, clearing, and cultivating the grasslands of Taiwan, and dying young. She decried the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party’s harsh “land to the tiller” policies in the 1950s that, while credited with vaulting Taiwan to economic strength through agriculture, also served as a land grab from native Taiwanese forced a choice to work the land or pursue an education. “No one could till the rice or vegetable fields in the countryside and go to school in the city simultaneously – whoever wanted to till the farmlands could not go to colleges even if they were qualified and willing,” she said. She castigated KMT leaders for their policy of reunification with mainland China. Jane was a life-long supporter of Taiwan self-determination for independence and democracy.
She was ever grateful to her selfless mother, who gave her valuable government grain coupons that helped pay for her education at the Taipei First Girls High School and then at her college, Shi Da. That education was a springboard to graduate work at UCLA, where she earned her M.A. in psychology and met her husband, Shin-yi. They moved to Athens, GA, then eventually to Binghamton, NY where she became a research associate and adjunct lecturer at SUNY Binghamton. She later became CEO of their small software-development company, Susquehanna Resources and Environment, with her husband as co-founder.
Throughout her life, she was passionate about supporting both Taiwan and the U.S. to keep them strong, independent, and free. Every day she worked to contribute to the peace, security, prosperity, and human rights in both countries, and dreamed of seeing the U.S. help its friend Taiwan fight the specter of dictatorship in the Pacific Rim.
A curious, adventurous soul, she prided herself on her physical strength – she worked out for at least 40 minutes a day on her recumbent bike – as well as her diligence, perseverance, optimism, trustworthiness, and self-confidence. With her husband, Jane was a founding member of the non-profit Global Taiwan Institute, and also established student scholarships at Binghamton University and Syracuse University.
She is survived by her loving family: Dr. Shin-yi Hsu, her husband of 56 years; her children, Dr. Sigmund (Dr. Felicia Feng) Hsu and Dr. Natalie (Dr. Teddy Pan) Hsu; and her three grandchildren, Carleton Sloane Hsu, Sydney Wen-Ying Hsu Pan, and Michael Li-san Pan.
Jane Ching-Yeng’s family wish to thank her life-long friends who attended the Flushing, NY birthday party which served as her celebration of life in late October.
Arrangements by the Dufresne Funeral Home, Inc., Cohoes, NY.
