Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, or other ways to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or cremation service may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. You can also include details about the funeral or memorial service, such as date, time, location, and whether it's open to the public.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and within 200-500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of word count and can include additional photos, stories, and memories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes! Including one or more photos of the deceased can make the obituary more personal and help readers connect with their memory. Check with the publication or online platform for their specific guidelines on photo submissions.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may require you to email or fax the obituary text and any accompanying photos. Be sure to ask about their deadlines and fees associated with publishing the obituary.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary in a newspaper?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper, its circulation size, and the length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars. Some newspapers offer package deals that include both print and online publication.

Are online obituaries free?

Some online platforms offer free obituaries, while others may charge a fee. Funeral homes and cremation services often provide free online obituaries as part of their services. Legacy.com and other online obituary platforms may charge a fee for premium features like guest books, candles, or video tributes.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published online?

The turnaround time for online obituaries can vary from immediate posting to 24-48 hours, depending on the platform's review process and moderation policies.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Contact the publication or online platform where the obituary was published to request changes. They may have specific procedures for making corrections or updates.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites like Newspapers.com or GenealogyBank.com. Local libraries or genealogical societies may also have access to historical newspapers and archives.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only essential information like name, age, date of death, and funeral details. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or cannot be prepared in time for publication.

What is a memorial tribute?

A memorial tribute is a special type of online obituary that allows friends and family to share memories, stories, and condolences through messages, photos, and videos. These tributes can remain active for years to come, serving as a lasting legacy for the deceased.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life accomplishments. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

Is it appropriate to include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to consider the audience and avoid anything that might offend or upset mourners.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to a favorite charity instead of flowers. Include the charity's name and address in the obituary so that mourners know where to send their contributions.

How do I notify social security about a death?

Contact your local Social Security Administration office or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to report the death. You'll need to provide the deceased person's social security number and proof of death.

What is a funeral home's role in creating an obituary?

Funeral homes often assist families with writing and submitting obituaries as part of their services. They may provide templates or guidance on what information to include.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or my personal website?

Check with the original publisher (newspaper or online platform) for permission before republishing an obituary elsewhere. Some publications may have restrictions on republication or require attribution.

How do I handle inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform where the obituary was published to report any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as quickly as possible.

Can I create an online memorial page without publishing an official obituary?

Yes! Online memorial pages can be created independently of traditional obituaries. These pages allow friends and family to share memories and condolences without adhering to traditional newspaper formats.

What is the purpose of an online guest book?

An online guest book allows mourners to leave messages of condolence, share stories, and sign their names digitally. This provides a meaningful way for friends and family to express their sympathy from anywhere in the world.

Can I add music or videos to an online obituary?

Some online platforms permit adding multimedia elements like music or videos to enhance the tribute. Check with the specific platform for their policies on multimedia content.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries remain active indefinitely, while others may expire after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the platform about their archiving policies.
