She is survived by Dickie, her husband and best friend since high school. Also surviving are her precious daughter, Sharon, and son-in-law, Chuck Pendleton whom she loved like a son. John Moore Wright - November 05, 1941 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Amherst)
Obituary Preview: On Sunday, February 25, 2024, John Moore Wright of Amherst, Virginia walked a Blue Ridge Mountain trail to heaven. Whether watching a sunset from a mountain or a sunrise in Nags Head, with a fishing pole in his hand, John loved the outdoors.
He loved the mountains of Nelson and Amherst, VA. He loved hunting, fishing, sports, his career in law enforcement, his family, his dog, and his friends.
Born in Lynchburg, November 5, 1941, John grew up in Old Roseland in Nelson County and the town of Amherst. He was the son of the late Cyrus and Elizabeth Loving Wright. He is preceded in death by his half-sister Joanne Habel and half-brother Garland Wright. He is survived by his daughter Kim Chappell, son in law Bill and beloved girl friend Ellen Craig.
John graduated from Amherst High School where he played both football and baseball for the Lancers. He also played for several local and regional leagues where he was often an MVP. He closely followed both the Lancer football and baseball teams, including attending games. He was also active with high school alumni groups.
He graduated from Virginia Tech where he played intramural football. As an alumnus, he often went to home football games. He would drive around the Drill Field and point out all the buildings where he attended classes—and he let Kim know that she would be attending Tech too. (And she did) Although he was a die-hard Tech fan, he also had some UVA friends. BUT, he did always enjoy watching that annual football game and seeing Tech win.
John retired from a 31-year law enforcement career. He graduated from numerous law enforcement schools including the Tidewater Law Enforcement Academy and the FBI National Academy. His favorite years were the ones looking for moonshine stills through the mountains and back woods of Virginia.
He was a true outdoorsman. When he wasn’t hunting or fishing, he was thinking about the next season. Like any true outdoorsman, he loved to tell and listen to stories about hunting and fishing. Friends and family would gather in the family home in Amherst to share stories and recipes. John loved a good fish fry or venison roast, and diligently worked on perfecting his recipes. He often sent the same text to his daughter, “You should be fishing today.” He followed Kim’s travels and would email a travel, fishing, or hiking guide with a PS: “Stop working so hard and go outside.”
The family would like to thank everyone who made John’s life an adventure well lived. If you are walking a mountain trail, and you spot a red cardinal, smile, and know that John is looking out for you.
A two hour visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM at Driskill Funeral Chapel. Driskill Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

Jesse Cole Wasserman - January 18, 1942 - December 03, 2023

Departed: 12/03/2023 (Amherst)
Obituary Preview: It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jesse Cole Wasserman on December 3, 2023, at the age of 81. Born on January 18, 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia, Jesse lived a life marked by devotion to his family, community, and faith. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering dedication to those he cherished.
The son of Louis L. and Verena Cole Wasserman, Jesse lived his whole life in Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, L. Leslie Wasserman, MD. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Jesse is survived by his sister, Susan Wasserman Lynch; his wife, Celeste; and his daughters, Sonya Wasserman Shaughnessy and Denise Wasserman Groover, along with their spouses, his 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren (and counting), and his beloved nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Jesse was married for 64 years to Celeste Williams Wasserman. Together, they built a joy-filled life, a deep faith, and an enduring bond of love and commitment.
He was a graduate of Old Dominion University and a respected CPA, serving his clients with integrity and expertise for over 60 years until his retirement in 2023. His commitment to community service was evident through his active involvement and leadership in the Kiwanis Club in Virginia Beach and later the Amherst Rotary Club.
He excelled in sports. Though in the “lost class of ’59,” he played Varsity football and graduated from Granby High School. Over the years, Jesse’s many hobbies spanned photography, racquetball, fishing, archery (typically with a longbow), and woodworking/woodturning. He had a special fondness for things that fly: from his pet parakeets to airplanes to flying kites on family beach vacations. He delighted in these things—the countless wonders it was possible to experience on God’s earth—and sometimes it seemed as though he was determined to try (and share) them all.
Perhaps most important of all, Jesse was a follower of Jesus Christ. Filled to the brim with a faith and Christ-given joy that permeated his whole being and life, Jesse was so warm and open that no one stayed a stranger for long, soon (and nearly inevitably) becoming a friend. He was a member of several churches throughout his life, and actively engaged in church and Christian ministry, most recently at Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Alongside Celeste, he generously served, hosted, and shared the love of Christ with missionaries, international students, and their families. His outreach and adventures even extended abroad, including travels to China, North Africa, and Spain, where—having become fast friends with those he served—he and Celeste visited students whom they had hosted, and even stayed with their families.
As we mourn his passing, we find solace in knowing that Jesse now delights in eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His life was a journey of love, service, friendship, and faith—a journey that blessed and enriched the lives of all who knew him.
A private family graveside has been scheduled. A memorial service will be held at Rivermont Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia on Monday, December 11, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Driskill Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
