Nell S. Lurain - August 01, 1946 - August 31, 2021

Departed: 08/31/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: Nell S. Lurain passed away peacefully at home in Oak Park, IL, on August 31, 2021.
Born in 1946 in Charlottesville, VA, to the late William P. and Alice Snavely, Nell grew up in Storrs, CT. In 1968, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Oberlin College, where she earned an undergraduate degree in biology and met her life partner, her husband of 52 years, John R. Lurain III. She went on to pursue an academic career in science, completing a PhD in microbiology at Loyola University of Chicago while simultaneously raising two daughters. Throughout their childhood, she was a dedicated presence on the sidelines at sporting events, always found reading scientific journal articles in between burst of cheering.
In 2020, Nell retired from her position as Professor of Immunology and Microbiology at Rush University after more than 25 years on the faculty. She loved the puzzle and practice of laboratory research and found human pathogens endlessly fascinating. This enthusiasm for her discipline, along with her nearly infinite patience, care, and commitment to education made her an excellent mentor and teacher; in 2019, she was awarded the Rush Faculty Excellence in Education Award.
Nell was a longtime, engaged member of First United Church of Oak Park, where she found a community of faith that nurtured both her spirit and her strong sense that human beings have a collective responsibility to care for each other. Through the church, she became involved with Cluster Tutoring, first as a tutor, and later, as a board member. The organization’s mission corresponded closely with her belief in the power of education and the importance of investing in the future through young people.
Everyone who knew Nell was struck by her sharp intellect, her unflappable practicality, her understated sense of humor, and her deep concern for others. Her family, friends, and colleagues were warmed by her generosity of spirit and reassured by her steadfast reliability. We will miss her affection and her “instructions” in equal measure.
In addition to her husband, Nell is survived by her children, Alice (Carla García) Lurain of Brooklyn, NY, and Kate (Gabriel Alvarado) Lurain, of Washington, DC, and by her siblings, William (Susan) Snavely and Elizabeth (Van) Aldred.

Catherine A. "Kay" Duff - October 27, 1929 - August 12, 2021

Departed: 08/12/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: Kay passed away peacefully in her home in Forest Park, Il at age 91, following a bout with cancer that was discovered only months ago. Prior to that, she was sharp as a tack, and as healthy as one could be at her age.
Kay was a remarkable woman. The family matriarch spent her formative years on the west side of Chicago, before moving to Oak Park shortly after marrying her (late) husband of 57 years, John (Jack) Duff. She attended Providence High School, and was an active member of the Presentation Young People’s Club, through which she met her future husband. She married at age 20, and raised ten children, seven of them born before she turned 30! She was an active member of Ascension Parish, in the Altar & Rosary Society and always involved in the many functions and events her children were part of. Kay was, like many women of the day, a full time mom. And a damn good one. She never took a day off. There were no weekends away with the girls, or vacations without the kids. One of the amazing things, especially compared to our lives as parents, is that she never drove. A blessing in disguise, perhaps? She walked to stores, or sent the children for daily supplies. Can you imagine a mother who doesn’t shuffle her children around these days?
As mentioned, Kay was always sharp as a tack mentally, and remained so until she passed. She knew everyone’s birthday. Not just her kids, but her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and god children. She would send reminders to us about an upcoming sibling’s birthday, etc.
In addition to her own wide circle of friends and her children, she was loved and adored by her children’s friends, who spent countless hours at the Duff household over the years and well into adulthood.
Kay will be missed dearly by all, but the memories of her will be everlasting.

James William Barker - June 14, 1926 - August 05, 2021

Departed: 08/05/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: James William Barker, born June 14, 1926, in Oak Park hospital to William Russell Barker and Mary Wilhelmina Heidelbach joined his wife, Ruth A. Barker on August 5, 2021 in their heavenly home. They were just shy of 70 years of marriage when Ruth died on Christmas Day, 2020.
He is survived by sons Lloyd (Mary Kay), James Jr. (Suzanne), and daughter Jane (Melinda Haag); by his granddaughters Melissa Bobinski (Josh), Julie Lietz (Greg), and Anne Barker; by his great-granddaughters Kherington Bobinski and Lindsey Jo Bobinski. He leaves many nieces and nephews with very fond memories of their loving Uncle, and hoards of neighbors and friends to whom he extended his kindness over the years.
Jim was baptized at St. John Lutheran in Forest Park. He attended elementary school there as did his future wife, one grade behind him. She wasn’t on his radar then. He graduated from Proviso East High School in 1944 and promptly enlisted in the Navy. He figured he’d have a bunk to sleep in. He served through World War 2 on the west coast, helping to protect the west coast from attacks. Although he felt he didn’t deserve credit for serving in World War 2 because he never fired a gun in the war, he served honorably.
He returned home from the Navy back to his home in Forest Park, a few blocks over from Ruth’s home. Jim found a job at Illinois Bell where his father worked as well. He started as a lineman and eventually worked his way up to management. He finally caught Ruth’s eye in the choir loft at St. John and they married on February 3, 1951. They moved into a bungalow in Forest Park and started a family. Lloyd, Jim and Jane arrived.
They moved to their beloved home in River Forest in 1964, and remained there for 65 years. At first Jim was the young guy on the block who blew the snow for the block and helped his older neighbors, and at the end became the elder statesman on the block. Well, the elder statesman with a twinkle in his eye and a firecracker at the ready on July 4th.
Jim loved to play. In his younger years he took his kids ice skating, and later took up roller blading. He was in the water playing with his children on every vacation they took. He golfed in a league while he was working, and as often as he could with his friends after that. He was a whiz at pinochle, and would play almost any game offered. He taught the ladies at Belmont Village Rumicube, and did such a good job teaching that they mostly beat him. His best hobby was counted cross-stitch sewing which he continued until he went into the hospital in July. He kept his sense of humor up to the very end.
Jim was a man who always put his family above all else, other than his faith. He loved Ruth with all of his being. When she could no longer live at home, he moved with her onto the memory ward because he couldn’t fathom living apart from her. He was devoted to her until her final day. He tried to find joy after she was gone, and he did, but it wasn’t enough to sustain him without her. And so, he has been reunited.

Robert J. Walsh - March 03, 1929 - July 28, 2021

Departed: 07/28/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: Robert J. Walsh of Oak Park (aka Bob, Grumpy, Boppa) passed away peacefully at home on July 28, age 92, surrounded by his beloved family who were his deepest source of joy and pride. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Marietta nee Battaglia; cherished father of the late Robert (James Jajkowski), Julie (Charles) Fabrizius, Marie (Kevin) White, Therese Cormack, and Elizabeth (Kirk Sweeney); proud grandfather of Luke (fiancee Kristen Contos) and Brian Fabrizius, Aidan and Hannah Walsh, Rebecca and Melissa Cormack, and Sean White; step grandfather of Anna Sweeney; devoted brother of the late Mary Jean (late Robert) Connelly and brother-in-law of the late Vincent (Maureen) Battaglia; dear uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Born March 3, 1929 to Luke and Eleanor (nee Sharkey) on Chicago’s west side, Bob attended Resurrection grammar school, St. Ignatius High School and DePaul University. After a quarter century as an investment analyst, he and Marietta started their second chapter by opening Logos Bookstore of Oak Park. The Christian bookstore flourished for the next quarter century and became a hub for family, friends, and community members to shop, work, and—most importantly—connect.
An active man of many tastes and talents, Bob loved golf, tennis, raquetball, "quiet time" in the morning, playing the piano and singing, butter pecan ice cream, apples and peanut butter, workouts at the Y, his Catholic faith, crossword puzzles, CNN, fixing anything (especially with duct tape), riding his John Deere mower at his treasured Apple Canyon Lake house (“Nothing runs like a Deere”), soaking in the sun anywhere but especially floating on a raft at Apple, building huge bonfires, playing pool, going to the movies, and wintering in Naples, Florida. He was a longtime friend of Bill W.
In 1976, Bob and Marietta helped found the St. Giles Family Mass Community. The family mass was a huge part of his life until the very end. He was a proud Rotarian, mentored inner city students, and advocated for an incarcerated man who became a friend. He was a welcome face at any occasion and will be sincerely missed by many.

Bennett C. Weaver - November 09, 1940 - July 14, 2021

Departed: 07/14/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: Bennett C. Weaver, age 80, a 49 year resident of Oak Park passed away on July 14, 2021, at West Suburban Hospital. Ben was born in Denton Texas on November 9, 1940, to the late J. Clark and Inez Koegel Weaver. He grew up in Denton, TX and Gainesville, FL.
At age 5, Ben was introduced to the cello at Interlochen Center for the Arts to keep him occupied while his parents were running the summer theater program. By middle school, he was playing in the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra and as a freshman in high school earned the position of first chair of that university orchestra. His talent as a cellist earned him a scholarship to study music at Swathmore College in Pennsylvania where he studied for a year before returning to Gainesville to study Physics at the University of Florida. He continued to play cello at the University of Florida where he met a flutist and hematology major, Donna Harpold. Ben was also a member of ROTC.
Ben married Donna in Bradenton, FL in 1964. Their first daughter Amy was born in Gainesville, FL in 1966 a few months before moving to Illinois so both of them could work in the lab at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital on the west side of Chicago. Their second daughter Susan was born in Oak Park, IL in 1970. The couple separated in 1972. The two remained very good friends. Donna introduced Ben to Patricia Funk with whom he had a 20-year relationship until she passed away in 2003.
In the late 60s, Ben secured a position at CNA Insurance in the actuarial department. He began writing computer programs to set reserves at CNA and in the late 70s moved over to Harris Bank as an analyst where he worked until retiring in 2001. In retirement, Ben was a paid computer consultant and helped continue his father’s work on the Weaver family genealogical history. It was through his work at CNA and Harris that his interest in personal computing began.
He was a beloved and revered 'computer geek' to all that knew him. In the early 1980s, Ben purchased an IBM PC for use at home and over the next four decades built and upgraded his own and hundreds of computers for others. In 1983 was a founding member of the Association of Personal Computer Users (APCU), one of the oldest general computer groups in America. He was also a member of the Chicago Area Database Users Group (CADBUG) and held various leadership roles in both. In recent years he often facilitated ‘Random Access,’ a question and answer discussion at monthly APCU meetings. He remained knowledgeable and could explain new computer hardware to the technically inclined and novice alike, using terms that took into account how the questioner had asked. His insatiable curiosity and drive to solve problems resulted in knowledge about seemingly everything. He enjoyed sharing this knowledge and had a way of explaining complex concepts using simple analogies or technical terms depending on the audience. His daughter Susan has often remarked, “I know why the sky is blue, why scuba divers go backward into the water over the side of the boat, and why phases of the moon and lunar eclipses happen because my Dad knew and had the patience to explain.” A friend since meeting at CNA in 1969 recalled the most impactful and profound statement he’d ever heard came from Ben. On his first day, while Ben was showing him around the various gathering places in the building, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a plastic fork, and said, ‘Always carry a fork because you never know when they are going to be having a party.’
He was always finding ways to help friends, family, and strangers alike. From serving several years as ‘Cookie Mom’ for both his daughter's Girl Scout troops to helping countless stranded motorists jump-start their car, Ben was always willing to pitch in and help. He was shot 3 times on the west side of Chicago after walking a co-worker home after a late office function and that didn't stop him. Did you need to move suddenly? Ben would find a van and show up to help load it. He was a true Renaissance man with carpentry, electric, plumbing, and all-around fix-it skills as well. He helped and advised family and friends, with all kinds of household projects up until recent months. He also had a profound effect on his daughters’ friends for the insight and assistance he provided where needed, whenever needed.

Therese Marie Loftus - December 27, 1958 - June 15, 2021

Departed: 06/15/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Therese Marie Loftus, beloved daughter, sister and aunt on June 15, 2021. Known to many who loved her simply as "T", Therese was a late Christmas present, born on December 27, 1958.
Therese was a natural as an older sister - she was looking out for her siblings at a young age. She continued to do so her entire life.
Therese quietly carved her own path, but always keeping her Catholic faith and her family as the two primary anchors of her life. She loved the holidays of all stripes, typically celebrated with an astonishing variety of holiday sweaters. She was especially in her element on St. Patrick's Day, decked out in all shades of green and flashing truly joyful smiles in the countless photos. T enjoyed a good glass of wine, a good meal and travel, both locally and internationally. Her trip to Ireland was one of the highlights of her life.
The focal point of T's life was her family. If there was a family event, T was a central part of it. She loved hearing the stories, telling a few of her own and joining in the laughter that always followed. Even in the final weeks of her life, wracked by pain, she insisted on seeing graduation and prom photos of her nieces and nephews. She dutifully prayed for good weather so those same nieces and nephews could accept their diplomas in bright sunshine and dance under cloudless moonlit nights.
Therese worked for over twenty years as the Development Coordinator at Misericordia, an iconic Chicago organization that works to improve the lives of the developmentally disabled. It was a perfect fit.
T was especially devoted to our mother. She would call mom every day to check in. And T would show up unannounced for coffee or shopping on the weekends. T never gave those calls or visits much thought as they came so naturally. To our elderly mother they meant the world.
Therese was intensely private and insisted the details of her grueling battle with ovarian cancer not extend beyond her immediate family. She was remarkably brave throughout and simply refused to feel sorry for herself.
Therese was preceded in death by our father, Thomas. She is survived by our mother Arlene Loftus; her siblings Thomas (Kathy) Loftus; Mark (Bianca) Loftus; Patrick (Cecilia) Loftus; Timothy (Lingyan) Loftus; Brigida (Kevin) Kessler; Mary Loftus; Julie (David) Bedore; and14 nieces and nephews. And by her cat Riley who was dutifully by her side through her struggles.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 9 am to 10:30 am at Drechsler Brown & Williams, 203 S. Marion, Oak Park, Illinois. The funeral mass will follow at 11 am at St. Luke Church, 7600 West Lake Street, River Forest, Illinois.

Robert J. Jansto - September 22, 1948 - June 14, 2021

Departed: 06/14/2021 (Oak Park)
Obituary Preview: Robert John Jansto, age 72, passed away peacefully June 14th. He is remembered, and his life celebrated by many. He is the dear brother of Carol Wootton; caring uncle of Anne (Teddy Rankin-Parker) Wootton, Sam and Nathaniel Wootton; great-uncle of Elio Parker; devoted son of the late John and Ann Jansto; dear cousin of many. Bob is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert Wootton.
Bob grew up on the Southwest side of Chicago, and was a graduate of Spaulding High School. A lifelong fan of the White Sox, he spent countless summer evenings at nearby Ashburn Park, honing his own skills with a bat and ball. Bob was a long-time member of Ashburn Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed. He was also one of the early participants at the Sertoma Centre where he worked for 33 years. He spent 11 happy years at Bjorklund House in Oak Forest, IL where he made many loving friends. In these past years, Bob resided at the Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Skokie. He graced -- and was graced by -- the many who helped in his care.
Bob was always at home when surrounded by his extensive vinyl collection. He freely shared with those lucky enough to know him his knowledge of country music from the 50s and 60s. The deep wellspring of his knowledge seemed endless at times, with trivia from old musical acts or little-known lyrics slipping from his lips as if they were common knowledge. He could often be found diligently working on his latest drawing, colored-pencil in hand, Johnny Cash playing on the turntable. In unguarded moments, his impish grin and infectious giggle brought undiluted joy to all around him.
