Obituary Preview: Henry Gerard Vanderzyden, age 95, of Eldora died Sunday April 3, 2022. Hank was born March 7, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio to Henry John and Cornelia Johanna.  He graduated from Fairview High in 1945 and left for the navy on his birthday, March 7, 1945. His mother crossed the stage to receive his diploma in May.  He was stationed at Pearl Harbor and readied for the invasion of Japan. Then he sailed on the flagship of the South Pacific under the command of Admiral Halsey.
Hank graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI where he met Verda Mae Kannegieter of Wellsburg, IA. They were married on August 19, 1949.  Hank was an accountant, farmer, insurance agent, and a vocational teacher at the State Training School for Boys in Eldora, IA. After retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Texas for over 30 years.
Hank loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s activities. His hobbies were traveling, fishing, birdwatching, singing, golfing, drinking coffee with his friends, and watching sports. As a member of the Eldora Methodist Church, he faithfully attended early morning Bible studies. He was the VFW commander of the Eldora American Legion and instrumental in the founding of Dordt College.
Hank is survived by his children, Kathryn Marie McMartin (David Heronimous), Henry Richard (Susan) Vanderzyden, and Kristen Lee (Darrell) Sents; his eight grandchildren, Jason (Sara) McMartin, Apryl (Nathan) DeLange, Benjamin (Lisa) Vanderzyden, Luke (Kalie) Vanderzyden, Tony (Annie) Sents, Joshua (Anne) Sents, Amanda (Chad) Roegner, and Edwin (Julia) Sents; 35 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; a brother Dick Vanderzyden of Grand Rapids, MI; and special friend Lolaraye Wiarda. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verda Vanderzyden; parents, Henry and Cornelia Vanderzyden; sister Loretta (John) Elffers; sister-in-law Barbara Vanderzyden; and son-in-law Darell McMartin.

Marian Harms was born on October 5, 1933, in Wellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Ebe and Dena (Ross) Harms. Marian attended Wellsburg Community School until the 11th grade when her father suddenly died. At this young age, Marian started working to help support her immediate family.
Marian was united in marriage to John D. Everts on September 24, 1951.  From this union, John and Marian were blessed with two children: Sharon and Timothy. John and Marian were janitors at the Wellsburg Reformed Church for over 35 years. They were also janitors at the Wellsburg School. When John retired at the school, Marian continued to work at the school for many years. Marian loved to crochet potholders for her family just like her mother did and color and sew in her spare time. But her greatest joy was being with her family and was overjoyed when she had her first great-grandchild.
It is a comfort for her children to know that Marian is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Left to cherish Marian’s memory are her children Sharon (Paul) Smit of Holland, Iowa and Timothy Everts of Wellsburg, Iowa; grandchildren Michael (Rebekah) Smit of Pella, Iowa, Scott Smit of Grundy Center, Iowa, and Lori (Peter) Horne of Otley, Iowa; great-granddaughter Anna Smit; brother Elmer (Donna) Harms of Sigourney, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Mitchel Jon Koch, 63, of Wellsburg, Iowa passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 4th at 4:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Wellsburg. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Mitch was born on July 27, 1958, the son of Christopher and Marion (Siefken) Koch. He grew in Holland and attended Grundy Center High School. He then went to work at an amusement park in Texas before returning to Iowa and work as a farm hand on local farms. He was very proud to then move onto to becoming a truck driver. He worked for Jerry Schipper, Kruger Seed, Panama Trucking and owned and operated his own business Koch Trucking LLC.
Mitch loved to play sports in his youth and loved to watch sports all his life. He enjoyed going to auto races and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Later in his life, Mitch became born again religious and found a spiritual home at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he was an active member. He also volunteered at the food bank and helped raise his nieces and nephews. He will be missed and long remembered by all who knew him.
Mitch is survived by his niece Angela Cross of Waterloo; nephews Brandon Cross of Waterloo, Darrell (Danielle) Jones of Independence, and John Boldon of Waterloo; grandnieces and grandnephews Marion Hayden, Taiven, Naleah and Kaisen Jones; sister Janet Bolden; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruth Riebkes was born on September 27, 1932 in Grundy County, the daughter of Bert and Nancy Janssen Riebkes.  She was raised and educated around the Grundy county school district where she attended a Country schoolhouse up through the 8th grade.  On March 4th, 1956 Ruth was united in marriage to the love of her life, Marvin Janssen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. From this union three children were born: Keith, Sharon and Lisa.
Ruth was a hardworking woman dedicating her life to raising her children and taking care of the family home. She also worked for over 20 years at the Ackley Presbyterian Village nursing home in the housekeeping department. Ruth was a proud member of the Cornerstone Presbyterian church. Ruth enjoyed all sorts of music, but her favorite was Polka music and even up to her final days she enjoyed hearing the sound of the instruments being played at the Care Center. She also enjoyed following sports of all kinds, spending time with family and friends but her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the ones who gave Ruth pure Joy. She loved all of the kids with all of her heart and was so proud of them all.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Keith Janssen of Cedar Falls, Sharon (Dean) Werkman of Waverly and Lisa (Ryan) Bakker of Steamboat Rock; grandchildren: Clayton (Libbey) Werkman of Ankeny, Collin Werkman of Hiawatha, Trevor Bakker, Haley Bakker and Morgan Bakker all of Steamboat Rock; great-grandchildren: Xander and Hudson Werkman; one sister: Judy (Paul) Launderville of Denison as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Patrick Steven Duncan was born on November 27, 1963 in Texas, the son of Robert Leonard and Rose Catherine (Dittman) Duncan. He was raised and educated in the Waterloo school district where he graduated from East High School. On July 19, 1986, Patrick was united in marriage to Cindy Bond.  From this union two children were born: Melissa and Matthew.  The couple later divorced. Patrick then was united in marriage to Lora (Berghoefer) Johnson on August 18, 2001, and helped raise her son, Cameron.
Patrick was a hard-working man and held numerous jobs during his lifetime.  These include managing Pester-Derby gas stations in Waterloo, being a farm hand for several Grundy County farmers, driving fork truck at Richelieu Foods, detailing tractors at Phelps Implement and for the last several years mowing lawns and moving snow for people in Wellsburg. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wellsburg. He enjoyed making people smile by helping them and delivering treats to them. Patrick was well known in Wellsburg for his display of Halloween and Christmas decorations that he would put up every year at his home. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and later decided he would rather enjoy watching the animals more than shooting them.  He enjoyed spending time outside planting flowers and feeding the birds and squirrels. The most important thing that gave Patrick joy was the time spent together with his family and friends. He was extremely proud of his children and being able to watch them grow into adulthood.  Patrick loved being a husband and dad.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife: Lora Duncan; children: Melissa (Kirk) Engelhardt, Matthew (Brooke) Duncan and Cameron Johnson; three sisters: Barb (Jeff) Smith, Theresa (Dean) Aikey and Mary (Kent) Johannsen; two brothers: Mike (Mary) Duncan and Danny Duncan; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Roberta Gertrude Renken was born on December 24, 1943, in Aplington, Iowa the daughter of Robert and Gertrude (Klooster) Renken.  She was raised and educated in the Grundy County school district and graduated from Wellsburg High School with the class of 1962.  On June 19, 1964, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Harold Aukes in Aplington, Iowa.  From this union the couple were blessed with three children: Bradley, Brent and Anita.
Roberta was a hardworking woman and took pride in all she did.  She dedicated most of her working years as a homemaker and raising her three children.  Roberta enjoyed working as a secretary at the Wellsburg school early in her marriage.  She had a passion for life, loving and sharing laughter with everyone she met.  The sound of laughter gave Roberta great joy in her life. She also loved cooking, baking, doing crafts, gardening, taking a yearly fall trip up to Prairie du Chien and looking at all the colors of the trees.  She would keep telling the children “Oh look at this one, oh wait this one is pretty”.  Her children find themselves making the same comments about the leaves to their own kids. Her most important joy in her life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She loved them more than words can describe and was extremely proud to be their grandmother.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 57 years, Harold Aukes; children: Bradley (Samantha) Aukes, Brent (Kristy) Aukes and Anita (Danton) Burkett; grandchildren: Lexy (Adam) Brown, Austin Aukes (Taylor Ingram), Katelynn Aukes, Robert Aukes, Ryley Aukes, Reese Aukes, Taylor Aukes, Danton (Zoey) Burkett, Connor Burkett and Cameron Burkett; two great-grandchildren: Ellie Kaye and Payton Brown; sisters: Rosalita (Ronald) Brass and Rosemary (Douglas) Neymeyer; one brother: Robert (Marsha) Renken; two sister-in-laws: Karen Shelton and Cathy (Mike) Groen as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceeded in death by her parents: Robert and Gertrude Renken.
Per Family: The church at which Roberta was a member is a very small country church.  While the family appreciates the outpouring of support, there might not be enough seating to accommodate a large amount of people.  We appreciate your understanding.

Obituary Preview: Marcella Laverne Neessen, 99, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Creekside in Grundy Center, IA.
A visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Wellsburg Reformed Church.  Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Verlyn Boone officiating.  Interment will follow at Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery.
Marcella was the only child of loving parents, Claas and Marie (Knock) Neessen.  She was born on her parent’s farm north of Wellsburg on September 10, 1921.  She was baptized on September 21, 1921 in the Reformed faith.  She was a lifetime member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church.
In 1939, Marcella graduated from the Wellsburg High School.  After graduation, she helped her parents on the farm until they moved to their new home in Wellsburg.  Marcella cared for her parents, especially her mother when her health began to fail.
Her mother passed away in 1959 and her father in 1971. Marcella and her father traveled the United States and Mexico.  Marcella also toured the Holy Lands and Ostfriesland, Germany.
Marcella served as secretary and organist for the Wellsburg Reformed Church for many years, and was a correspondent for the Wellsburg Herald, a section of the Grundy Register.  She loved to read, play cards, and enjoyed visiting with her friends.
Preceding Marcella in death were her parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
She is survived by a host of friends.

Boyd Kenneth Meyer was born on July 25, 1937 in Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Lubert and Jennie (Eckhoff) Meyer.  He was raised and educated in the Wellsburg School district, where he graduated from Wellsburg High School with the class of 1955.  On January 7, 1958, Boyd was united in marriage to the love of his life, Delores Tack at the Wellsburg Reformed Church.  From this union, three sons were born: Joel, Alan and Keith.
Boyd was a hardworking man, and very dedicated to his farm and family.  He was a lifelong farmer and even after he retired from farming, he was still helping his son Joel on the farm. Boyd didn’t consider farming as a job but more of a passion. Boyd was also instrumental with helping Joel with his aerial spraying business.  He truly did have a love for the land that he took care of and eventually was able to pass it to his sons.  Boyd also enjoyed driving tractor, running the combine, mowing, reading, playing cards, going for walks but most important, was his family.  The memories and love between the family was what kept Boyd the happiest.  He was an Elder at the Wellsburg Reformed Church for years.  Boyd was a giving man with a huge heart who loved his Lord and his family.
Left to cherish Boyd’s memory is his loving wife, Delores; children: Joel (Terri) Meyer, Alan Meyer, and Keith (Carrie) Meyer; one brother: LuRay Meyer; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 nieces and a nephew.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Lubert and Jennie Meyer.

John Edwin Peters - December 17, 1990 - April 17, 2021

Obituary Preview: John Edwin Peters (30) of Wellsburg, Ia. went home to his Savior in heaven on April 17th at his family farm in rural Wellsburg.  His Mom, Janice, his Dad, Paul and brother, Andy were with him when he passed. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at St. John Lutheran Church in Wellsburg, Iowa from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow the service at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Rural Wellsburg. Memorials may be directed to the family.
John was born December 17th, 1990, in Iowa Falls.  He was baptized first by his Grandma Dorothy at ten days old, when a life-threatening emergency sent John  to the hospital. The incident left him permanently disabled for the remainder of his life. On April 21, 1991, John was again baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Wellsburg, where he learned to know and love Jesus. His sister Angela was his baptismal sponsor.
John attended elementary school in Eldora and later went to River Hills school in Cedar Falls. He graduated in 2012. John was known for having the funniest jokes recorded on his DynaVox and for bringing awesome, homemade birthday treats for everyone to enjoy. John then began a program at North Star Advantage in Waterloo where he attended daily until his recent illness.
John enjoyed his life on the farm. He loved to be outdoors riding in the Gator, picnicking at the farm pond or riding in the combine during fall harvest. He liked being in the center of activity and one could often hear him laughing as his nieces and nephews gathered around his wheelchair. John spent many hours listening to music and loved to be in church on Sundays. Throughout his life, John was blessed with the enduring love of his family and dedicated care from countless doctors, nurses, therapists, teachers and aides who helped him.
John is survived by his parents Paul and Janice Peters, sister Angela (Matt) Buttjer and Andrew (Ashley) Peters, nieces Hannah and Ella Buttjer, nephews James and Owen Buttjer, niece Abigail Peters and nephew Edwin Peters as well as aunts, uncles and cousins who supported him during his life. John is preceded in death by a sister Jennifer,  by his maternal grandparents Don and Marlys Tomlinson and by his paternal grandparents Edwin and Dorothy Peters.

Pam was born on August 4, 1949 in Marshalltown, Iowa, to her parents Milo & Genevieve “Jean” (Kauffman) Clark. She grew up in Marshalltown and later met Clifford Harms, where the couple married on October 26, 1968, in Mazeppa, MN. After they were married, Pam and Clifford welcomed 3 children into their family. She stayed at home and cared for her children and later began her housekeeping career at the Lutheran Home in Cedar Falls, IA. Her most recent job was being a greeter at Walmart.
In Pam’s younger years, she enjoyed bowling and playing cards with her friends. Pam absolutely loved music and enjoyed it all throughout her life. She was an avid animal lover and could nurse anything back to life. She was also very meticulous about having her hair and nails done every week! During retirement, Pam enjoyed taking cruises with her husband Clifford. She loved seeing her family and doted on her grandchildren. What brought the most joy to Pam was having fun, and watching others have fun. She had a close-knit circle of family and friends, and she was deeply loved by all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Pam is survived by her husband Clifford of Wellsburg; sons Troy (Sonia) Harms of Slater, IA and Brody (Tara) Harms of Waukee, IA; 4 grandchildren including Karsyn & Parker Harms. She rejoins in Heaven her parents; her beloved daughter Sara; sister Jane Bockes and brother Michael Lee Murray.

Carol Buss was born on December 30, 1927, in New Hartford, IA, the daughter of Sam and Grace (Fleshner) Buss.  She married LeRoy Beving on September 10, 1948.
Carol graduated from New Hartford High School in 1945.  She worked at Diamond Brothers Grocery Chain and then John Deere Payroll Department in Waterloo, IA until 1951, when they moved to the farm.  There she raised her two children.  After they graduated from school, Carol worked as a postal clerk at the Wellsburg Post Office for 20 years before retiring in 1991.
Carol Enjoyed traveling and fishing in Canada, as well as needlework and quilting.
Carol is survived by her husband, LeRoy Beving; one daughter, Debra (Larry) Bausman; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Grace Buss; one son, Gregory Beving and her family of 3 brothers: Henry, Donald and Bernette and 4 sisters, Bernice Jones, Florence Nieman, Maxine Wilson, and Tillie Marie Buss (stillborn) and all their spouses.
Due to Covid-19 there will be a private graveside services for immediate family only at a later date.

Richard was born February 10, 1944, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Eldon & Betty (Morgan) Fox. His family moved to Sidney, Iowa, where he was raised and attended school. Richard graduated from Sidney High School, with the class of 1962. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Vietnam. Richard served 4 years as a gun sergeant and completed 189 flight missions. While serving, he was wounded and received the prestigious Purple Heart award. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Richard moved back to Sidney, where he met his future wife, Linda Sharp. It was not love at first sight but after many encounters with one another, they eventually grew on each other, and the couple was married on October 14, 1967 in Kearney, Nebraska. While living in Kearney, Richard attended college for banking, attending the University of Nebraska-Kearney, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in finance. Richard started his banking career in North Platte, Nebraska, later working 10 years for the government as a bank auditor and finishing out his career at People’s Savings Bank in Wellsburg, as bank president.
He was proud Mayor of Wellsburg for many years and was a member of the American Legion. In his earlier years, he was also a certified dog breeder of coon hounds. When Richard wasn’t busy (which wasn’t often!), he enjoyed fishing, camping, water sports and traveling with his wife Linda all over the country; many times, with the banks he worked for. He enjoyed his Wednesday night golf league and was a die-hard Nebraska Huskers fan! Richard was a hard-working man. He was stoic; he never, ever complained about anything, not even during the tough battle he was facing. His family’s hearts are broken he is gone, but it brings them comfort knowing he is reunited with his family, especially his daughter Adrienne, and his beloved Linda.
Richard is survived by his sons Neil (Carol) Fox of Oelwein, IA and Aron (Colleen Tierney) Fox of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Samantha Fox of Omaha, NE, Vince Fox of Quasqueton, IA, Shawn Reverts of Oelwein, Shelby Choate of Webster City, IA, Aliyah Fox of Cedar Rapids, and Tjaden Fox of Colfax, IA; great-grandchildren Marty, Marvin and Miles Fox and Arya Fox; brother Kenny Fox of Lincoln, NE. Following Jim’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded.  There will be a public outside visitation held from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 2020 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church premise located by Wellsburg, IA.  A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2020 also at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church premise. Jim was born on June 24, 1946 at the family home east of Wellsburg the son of August H. and Anna (Christians) Ascher. He received his education in the Wellsburg Community School district, graduating with the class of 1964. Following graduation Jim worked construction for Gethmann Construction and at Mid Equipment which led to a life of farming on the family farm.
Jim was united in marriage to Diane Faye Werkman on June 20, 1975 at the Holland Christian Reformed Church. They were blessed with two children Sara Ascher McMartin and Michael James Ascher.
Jim was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Grundy County. He was an avid fisherman and took joy going on many trips with dear friends and family.  They said there was not a fish too big or two small he could not snag unless he was with his grandchildren who enjoyed getting the biggest or first catch.  Jim could also be spotted no matter sunshine, heat, cold, rain, sleet or snow on the sidelines cheering on those he loved so dear.
He is survived by his wife Diane of 45 years; children Sara (Jason) McMartin of Grundy Center, IA and Michael (Stacy) Ascher of Parkersburg, IA. His grandchildren Katie (Jordan) Lewis, Josie (Jacqueline) McMartin, Payton McMartin, Savannah and Rylan Ascher; two great granddaughters Eliana and Mia Rose. One ​brother, Ed Ascher and his wife Beth of Wellsburg, two sisters, Thelma Ringena of Steamboat Rock, Annabelle Schriever and her husband Lloyd of Ackley; sisters-in-law Mary Ascher, Lanette Saathoff, Wanda Akers, Arlene (Melvin) Haupt and Lois Meester; and many nieces and nephews.

Kay was born on April 24, 1939 in Wellsburg, Iowa to her parents Conrad and Mabel (Maas) Weichers. She attended and graduated from Wellsburg High School. On June 14, 1956, she was united in marriage to Lavern Van Heiden. They made their home in Wellsburg and together raised 5 children, celebrating 57 years of marriage at the time of Lavern’s passing in 2014.
Kay was a full-time mom until her children were grown. She then worked as the Activities Coordinator at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care for over 25 years. She was very dedicated to her job and spent many hours of her free time, working to make everything special for her residents.
Being creative came naturally to Kay. She was an excellent seamstress, loved to crochet, cross-stitch, garden, do cross word and jigsaw puzzles, and watch basketball and baseball. Kay loved music and for several years was the choir director at St. Paul’s where she was a life-long member and took her turn serving on the council.
Spending time with her family is what Kay treasured most. The most important thing about Kay was that she had a strong faith in the Lord, gave unselfishly, was forgiving and loved unconditionally.
Kay is survived by her daughters Marcia Van Heiden & her friend LuDean Johnson; Paula (Larry) Klosterboer, and Sara Van Heiden; son Lance (Cindy) Van Heiden; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother Cliff (Judy) Weichers. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lavern; daughter Stacey; and brother Don Weichers.

Smokey was born on March 25, 1939 to his parents Henry V. and Henrietta (Kolthoff) Janssen. He was raised on a farm in rural Grundy County and graduated from Wellsburg High School in the class of 1957. Smokey was united in marriage to Shirley DeGroote on August 14, 1965 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they made their home in Wellsburg and welcomed their daughter Kim into their family.
After high school, Smokey worked for many years at Snittjer Grain Co. He then went to work for the Wellsburg Community Schools, first as a mechanic and then as a bus driver. He loved being a school bus driver and only retired due to failing health. Smokey also worked as a part-time farmer.
Smokey enjoyed doing yard work, cars & trucks and spending time with his friends at coffee. However, his true joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.
Smokey is survived by his wife Shirley Janssen of Wellsburg; his daughter Kim (Chad) Hotz of Waverly; his grandsons Cole and Caden Hotz both of Waverly and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Virgil, Delmar, Kenneth and Marvin Janssen; and his sisters Agnes Ward and Carol Glenn.
