Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to share the news with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, allowing them to pay their respects, attend funeral services, and offer condolences to the family.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include a brief biography, favorite quotes or lyrics, and details about funeral services or memorial donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed, while newspaper obituaries may need to be concise due to space limitations.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help make the obituary more personal and memorable.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any necessary payment or documentation.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to reflect on their life and leave a lasting message for loved ones. This can be a meaningful exercise in self-reflection and can ensure that your story is told in your own words.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some publications offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge per line or word count. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or edits to an obituary after it's been published, but this depends on the publication's policies. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary to minimize errors.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time it takes for an obituary to be published varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are often published immediately, while newspaper obituaries may take several days or weeks to appear in print.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate their life and bring comfort to those who are grieving.

What if I don't know much about the deceased person's life?

If you're tasked with writing an obituary but don't know much about the person's life, try gathering information from family members, friends, or colleagues. You can also research public records or social media profiles to get a sense of their interests and accomplishments.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This allows friends and loved ones to make a meaningful contribution in memory of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Treat sensitive information with care and respect. If you're unsure about sharing certain details, consider consulting with family members or omitting them altogether. Remember that an obituary is meant to honor and celebrate the person's life.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for a long time?

Yes! Even if someone passed away years ago, you can still write an obituary as a way to remember and honor their life. This can be especially meaningful for family members or friends who want to keep their memory alive.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for a veteran?

Yes! When writing an obituary for a veteran, be sure to include their military service information, such as branch of service, rank, and years served. You may also want to mention any notable awards or decorations they received during their service.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and personality to the obituary. Choose something that resonates with their values or spirit.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?

MOST online obituary platforms provide easy sharing options for social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Simply click the share button and follow the prompts to post the link on your chosen platform.

Can I create a memorial website or page for the deceased?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to create a memorial website or page where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences. This can be a meaningful way to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the online platform. Some websites may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time. Be sure to check with the platform for their specific policies.

Can I reprint an old obituary from years ago?

You may be able to find archives of old newspapers or online platforms that store historical obituaries. Alternatively, you could recreate the original obituary from memory or using other resources.

Is it appropriate to include funeral service details in an obituary?

Yes! Including funeral service details such as date, time, location, and burial information helps ensure that friends and family can attend and pay their respects.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

If you need to share different levels of detail or tone with various groups (e.g., coworkers vs. close friends), it's acceptable to write multiple versions of the obituary tailored to each audience.
