Powell Robinson Jr. - July 07, 1925 - April 08, 2024

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Hingham)
Obituary Preview: Powell Robinson, Jr. of Marshfield, MA, passed away peacefully on April 8th, 2024 just as the moon had finished its eclipse of the sun. He was 98 years old. Powell was born on July 7,1925 in Glens Falls, NY to Ruth and Powell Robinson, Sr.. He was the eldest of two siblings, Katherine Robinson McCabe and Charles Robinson. Powell grew up in Morristown, NJ and then later attended boarding schools in New England and one in
Arizona which is where he met his future wife. She was in a girls boarding school nearby and was 14 years old when he first met her. His youth was shortened by the arrival of World War II and at age 18 he volunteered for the air force and became a Ball Turret Gunner flying on B24’s. In November of 1944, during what would have been his final mission before heading stateside, his plane was shot down and he and the crew had to parachute out, landing behind enemy lines in what was then Yugoslavia. He was stuck in this territory for over 6 weeks, endured unthinkable living conditions and witnessed the horrors of war which he and his generation rarely discuss or revisit.  Eventually he and his crew as well as 12 other air crews were rescued and returned to their base in Bari Italy. His family learned more about his war experience from the book “Lost Airmen” (2022) which details the survival stories of Powell and other bomber crews during World War II.
Powell returned back to the states in the spring of 1945 and was stationed in Texas for the remaining months of the war. The following year he married his sweetheart, Margaret Louise Hewitt, affectionately known as Peggy. He was only 21 and she was just 20.  He completed college on the GI Bill graduating from Boston University and then went on to a successful career at the Shawmut Bank where he rose to be Vice President of lending operations. He moved his young and growing family to Wellesley, Mass. and they spent their summers in the Duxbury/Marshfield area enjoying life on the “Hill” with a large and growing extended family.
Unfortunately Powell fell victim to the polio epidemic in the early 1950’s and was told that he would never walk again. He persevered and fought to successfully get back on his feet. Powell was a fighter and lived by the mantra of “never give up and always persist”. He had the quote from Calvin Coolidge framed and prominently displayed, “Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence… The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” He lived by these words and shared them with those he loved.
Powell believed in giving back to the community and after his long career at the bank, he held many volunteer positions largely in the area of finance. He helped many organizations thrive and others right themselves. He was on the board of the Duxbury Yacht Club acting as treasurer. He was also the treasurer and on the board of Plymouth Plantation, helping them navigate some challenging and turbulent times. He helped lead Duxbury Bay Maritime School during its formative years when the business model was being created and the initial campus buildings were being built. During this time, he established financial systems and controls which were fundamentally important to allowing DBMS to grow and thrive. He was a longtime trustee at Crossroads for Kids and spent decades on the board of Dexter school. He demonstrated how to be engaged with many philanthropic organizations and left a lasting positive impact on all of them.
Above all else, Powell Robinson, Jr. was a gentleman who loved order and form. He always dressed impeccably from his starched white collared shirt, polished shoes to his signature bow tie.  He loved classical music and beautiful gardens. He loved tinkering in his workshop and writing letters to family and receiving them in turn. He loved the beautiful view of Duxbury Bay and sailing on those blue waters. He loved his network of friends and most especially his family.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Hewitt Robinson, and his sons Dwight Parker Robinson and Colby Hewitt Robinson. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Robinson and her husband Richard Nestle of Wayland MA, his son Powell Robinson III and his wife Sarah Robinson of South Salem, NY and his three grandchildren Lily Parker Robinson, Powell Robinson IV and Charlotte Lloyd Robinson.
A life celebration of Powell Robinson, Jr.  will be held at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School on Duxbury Bay, May 4 from 1pm to 4pm. Contributions in his memory can be made to: Duxbury Bay Maritime School 457 Washington Street Duxbury, MA  02332 Crossroads 119 Myrtle Street Duxbury, MA  02332 Plimoth Patuxet Museums 137 Warren Avenue Plymouth. Obituary Preview: Berry, Susan Bickford,81, of Hingham, Massachusetts died peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 28,2024, surrounded by her family following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Suky (as she was known to many), was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts on July 23,1942 to Eugene E. Bickford and Mildred W Bickford and grew up in her beloved town of Hingham where she raised her family. In 1962 she married her high school sweetheart Charles W Berry, of Hingham. They were happily married for 62 years.
In addition to her husband Suky is survived by her four siblings Peter B Bickford and Thomas Bickford of Hingham, Richard W. Bickford of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts and R. Janet Bickford of Danbury, CT, her three children: Lisa B. Murray and husband Chuck of Yarmouth, Maine, Jennifer B Haggerty and husband Mike of Hingham and C.Matthew Berry and wife Liz of Marshfield, Massachusetts. Suky is also survived by eight grandchildren: Maxwell Murray, Molly Haggerty, Matthew Haggerty, Isabelle Murray, Lizzy Haggerty, Margaret Berry, Charles Berry and Thomas Berry.
Suky’s love for the town of Hingham stems from her ancestors who were among the earliest settlers who came from Hingham, England in the 1630’s. She followed her mother and maternal grandfather serving on the Hingham Conservation Commission and also the Hingham Historic Districts Commission and the Community Preservation Commission.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in Extension Studies from Harvard College, Suky earned her masters degree in social work from Simmons College and then spent several years as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Boston working in early intervention helping inner city families and children.
A hallmark of Suky’s life was helping others, with special attention to underdogs, often going beyond the call to help out underprivileged families.
As the oldest of five children, she took naturally to the task of matriarch to her four siblings. She was a devoted and much beloved mother and grandmother to her three children and eight grandchildren.
With a quick wit and friendly smile she was known to take a long time to complete a circuit of the Fruit Center. A lifelong animal lover, Suky couldn’t stand to see an animal suffer. Once during a trip to the BVI she took a dog with a broken leg to a local veterinarian for treatment. Soon the dog was back on the street with its leg in a cast much to the surprise of its owner.
Gardening was one of her favorite pastimes and Charlie tried in vain to get her to look first at the available space before heading to the garden center to fill up her car. Suky and Charlie shared a love of sailing which they enjoyed for several years in the Caribbean in winter and on the New England coast in the summer. Nothing pleased Suky more than spending time with her grandchildren, especially in Spruce Head Maine.
A celebration of Suky’s life is planned for 11:00 AM on Friday, April 19,2024 at the Parish of Saint John the Evangelist at, 172 Main Street, Hingham. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Suky's name to the Norwell Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice  120 Longwater Drive Norwell, MA 02061 https://www.nvna.org

QTAS, Inc., better known as Quincy Telemessaging, grew successfully under his and his wife Marge’s care until his retirement in 2020.  His daughters followed into his footsteps joining the business after college and working side by side with him for over 35 years.  His employees respected him tremendously as he always rolled up his sleeves doing whatever was needed to run a successful organization.
Ed’s family and friends were everything to him. His home was the gathering place for many over the years and the annual July 4th pool party was legendary. The memories of those events are still reminisced about by all those who attended.  He was an avid traveler and thoroughly enjoyed vacationing with family and friends alike.  He often loved traveling to warmer destinations to escape the cold New England winters.  In his younger years Ed loved to ski with the family and continued the family tradition in Stowe, VT when his daughters went to college at the University of Vermont.  Ed was a proud, patriotic American who flew the American flag over his yard year-round.  A devoted Boston sports fan, you could always find Ed enjoying the Bruins, Celtics, Patriots or Red Sox games.
His generosity was beyond compare. He never had an unkind word about anybody . . . a truly devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Southwood Nursing Home for all their efforts to make Ed’s last years as comfortable as possible.

Ned served his country as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, flying Caribous and C-130s during two tours of duty in Vietnam. Among his numerous critical missions in the region were transporting in and out of Phnom Penh, Cambodia when it was under threat from the Khmer Rouge and flying the peacekeeping team during their mission in Vietnam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After returning from Vietnam, Ned joined the Rhode Island Air National Guard from which he received an honorable discharge after twenty-two years in the military. While with the Rhode Island Air National Guard, at age forty-six, Ned was reabsorbed back into the Air Force full time for Desert Storm due to his leadership, combat experience, and ability to mentor the young recruits in their first war. (His co-pilot was twenty-two.)
After Desert Storm and before returning home, Ned flew special missions including one in support of the Space Shuttle. Known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor, Ned’s summaries of his war experiences were, “It’s nice to win one” and “They only kept me in the military to make the enemy over-confident.”
Ned grew up in Hingham, MA and was a graduate of Derby Academy, Milton Academy, Lake Forest College, and Suffolk University where he earned an MBA after returning from Vietnam.
He settled in Cohasset but later moved back to Hingham, a town he loved. He worked in the international shipping business, in finance at Putnam Investments and other institutions, and later in life became a small business owner as a master distributor of European gourmet food.

Ned could build or repair anything. He loved playing hockey and rugby and passed on his enthusiasm for sports by coaching his children’s various teams. He spoke several languages, was able to imitate  assorted accents as well as the voices of numerous cartoon characters perfectly, which surprised and delighted little children and the Disney characters at Disney World themselves!
He played multiple musical instruments including bass guitar for the Dionysians on Nantucket and for the ten piece band The Soul Syndicate in Chicago in the late 1960’s, opening for groups like The Association, The Turtles, and The Buckinghams, etc. He loved trains, built ship models, and was a past Captain of the U.S.S. Constitution Model Shipwright Guild. (The air would be blue with profanity when he was rigging his ship models. Ned would shout, “Alex! Take the children and leave me!”)
His energy, optimism, and sensational sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
Ned’s family would like to express their profound sense of gratitude to the extraordinary physicians who cared for him and gave us all of the extra years together we never would have had without their expertise and compassion: Dr. Richard Swanson, Dr. Chandrajit Raut, Dr. Thomas Abrams, Dr. Kunal Jajoo, Dr. Richard Krolewski, and Dr. Khang Vinh Nguyen.

God looked around his garden And found an empty place, He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids And whispered, ‘Peace bethine’. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home. by Melissa Shreve

Sandra J Peavey - February 27, 1938 - February 07, 2024

Departed: 02/07/2024 (Hingham)
Obituary Preview: Sandra Jeanne (Strebel) Peavey of Hingham, MA, died peacefully at South Shore Hospital on February 7, 2024, surrounded by her family, after suffering a cardioembolic stroke a few days earlier. She would have turned 86 on February 27th.
She will be greatly missed by her husband of almost 60 years, Bernie Peavey, her daughter, Maggy Pietropaolo, grandchildren Zackery and Sofia, their father, Vincent Pietropaolo, her brother, Stephen Strebel and his wife, Mary, her nieces and nephews, Bill Strebel, Stephanie and Carl Jasmin, Sarah and Roger Cameron, Joe and Heather Strebel, her 12 grand-nieces and nephews, and the many cousins who loved her.
Sandy was born in Buffalo, New York to Dr. Gustave Strebel and Adelaide Corridon Strebel, but soon moved to Rochester where she spent most of her youth. Two years were spent in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, while her father, an optometrist, cared for the eyesight of the men working on the Manhattan project. As a child, she enjoyed dressing up her cats and pushing them around in a baby carriage. So, she was delighted when at six years old, her parents gave her a baby brother. Unfortunately, Steve lost some of his appeal when he grew into a typical annoying younger sibling, but as adults, they became very close.
Sandra received her B.A. in English at Cornell University in 1959 and in 1962, went on to become one of only six women to graduate from Duke University School of Law in the entire decade and was the only woman in her graduating class and on law review. Upon graduation, Sandy moved to Washington, DC to work for the US government as a trial attorney for the Federal Power Commission. After 11 years, she left to become a founding partner of Spiegel & McDiarmid, which is still a top ranked law firm specializing in the energy and telecom industries. There, her practice focused on utility regulation and anti-trust law, representing smaller municipal power companies against the unfair practices of large private firms. In 1974, she was admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court, where she tried several cases during her career. In the mid-1990s, Sandy transitioned from senior partner to of counsel at her firm, taught legal writing both in person and online at the University of Maryland and University of Baltimore, and eventually left Spiegel & McDiarmid to become of counsel at McAndrew & Zitver, where she practiced appellate employment law part-time until her retirement in 2020.
In January 1964, Sandy visited a friend’s church and was introduced to Bernie at dinner after the service. They hit it off immediately, became engaged in March, and married on June 27th the same year. In 1967, they bought a home in Laurel, Maryland, and welcomed their daughter the following year. In addition to representing clients all over the country, and raising her daughter, Sandy enjoyed ballroom dancing and playing bridge with her husband. Summer weekends were spent at their apartment in Bethany Beach, Delaware, where Sandy eventually became president of the Sea Colony condo association. When Maggy left to follow in her mother’s footsteps at Cornell, Sandy picked up a new hobby – owning racehorses. She especially loved visiting them in the stables and watching them train in the early mornings.
In 2002, Sandy began her favorite job – grandmother – and could finally stop showing her friends pictures of her “grand-dog.” She and Bernie moved to Hingham in 2006 to be closer to their grandchildren, and for nine years, Zack and Sofia had the amazing experience of being taken care of by Grammy and Grampa every Monday after school.
Soon after moving to Linden Ponds, Sandy saw an announcement that Hingham was looking for people to negotiate the town’s contracts with Comcast and Verizon and thought that sounded fun, so she joined the Hingham Cable TV Advisory Committee, which she chaired from 2009-2016 and vice-chaired until 2018. While on this committee, she started the “Spanning the Generations” program at the high school with a grant from Verizon, where high school students train senior citizens to use video equipment for cable TV programming. Sandy also pursued her hobbies of photography and videography at Linden Ponds, where she volunteered as a crew member at their cable TV studio. Sandy enjoyed being part of both the Linden Ponds community and the entire Hingham community. She was an active member of Second Parish, serving on the leadership board, filming Sunday services for cable TV, and donating both food and time to the Hingham Food Pantry. She also envisioned and built the Serenity Path through the woods behind the church.
In her seventies, Sandy developed an intolerance for gluten, so naturally she and her friend established the Linden Ponds Gluten Free Club where members shared recipes and a monthly dinner together. Before covid, Sandy and Bernie enjoyed many activities with their friends at Linden Ponds, including folk and ballroom dancing, attending performing arts events, and traveling on small ship cruises. Sandy started two other groups there: the UU Fellowship of Linden Ponds, of which she was president until 2022, and the Unitarian Universalist University or “U cubed,” which is a weekly gathering of residents to watch lectures from Great Courses on topics of history, religion, and culture.
When she wasn’t working, volunteering, or caring for her husband and grandchildren, Sandy enjoyed reading detective fiction, doing sudoku and logic puzzles, shopping and traveling. In their retirement, Sandy and Bernie traveled to both Alaska and Hawaii, cruised the Mississippi, the Great Lakes and Belize, and in 2016 they took their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren on a week-long vacation to the Canadian Rockies.

Kenneth L Janey Jr - May 10, 1954 - December 31, 2023

Departed: 12/31/2023 (Hingham)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth L. Janey, Jr. died peacefully on December 31 after a long illness. In his final days, he was surrounded lovingly by family and friends.
Ken graduated from Hingham High School in 1972. In middle school he was selected for the academically talented class (ATC), an accelerated curriculum for gifted and talented students. Over the four years of the program Ken’s ATC cohort formed very strong bonds of friendship which endure to this day and many of his classmates, ATC and beyond, gathered with family by his bedside through his final days.
Ken held a variety of positions during his working life but, he spent most of it as a journeyman sprinkler fitter; he was a proud member of the Sprinkler Fitters Local Union 550. He grew up in Hingham Massachusetts and, once established in his profession, had a beautiful Cape Cod style home built in Rockland MA where he lived until he suffered his first stroke in 2011. Despite his career in the trades, Ken may have missed his true calling as a gourmet chef. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of recipes and cooking techniques and was always available to his adoring niece Keir for a kitchen consult. The thoroughness of his expertise also extended to other passions including gardening, birdwatching, and vintage TV programs.
Ken was an excellent golfer, successful at all aspects of the sport except in passing his passion for it on to his younger brother. Fortunately, he was able to infuse his nephew with the golfing bug and Devin still uses the ancient putter Ken gifted to him many years ago. Ken was known for his quick wit and always drew energy from engaging with people. He made a point of knowing each employee by name in every store and office he frequented, and they knew him. He touched so many with his warm and gregarious ways and was always quick with a joke, a laugh, and a smile.
Ken is survived his brother David W. Janey and his wife Debra J. Robbin of Hingham MA, his nephew Devin C. Janey and his wife Erica M. Samalis of Washington DC, his niece Keir C. Janey of Dorchester MA, his sister Peggy O’Connor and niece Catherine O’Connor of Greenfield MA and dozens of close family and friends across the country.
At the family’s request, memorial donations may be made in Ken’s name to the Hingham Food Pantry, 685 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Spring.
