on July 11, 1953.  Thru the years, Loretta worked for Weitz Sewing Factory, Zig’s Meat Market, and National Pharmacy; her longest employment of 20 years was with Lorain City Schools.
Loretta enjoyed many passions in her lifetime; the greatest love was being with her family and sharing her gift to genuinely connect with others.  There wasn’t a person she met that was a stranger.  Loretta was known for cooking the most delicious meals and hosting the most wonderful holiday celebrations!  She always had a weekly Sunday dinner prepared in case anyone stopped over for a visit.  For over 50 years, Loretta met monthly and planned trips with her beloved club girls, made craft projects, traveled on bus trips, toured other states, played local church bingo, and engaged in every celebration of life that she could.  Spending quality time with her husband, children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends was always welcomed.  She invested herself in the daily lives of her nine grandchildren and created so many special and amazing memories with each of them.  Loretta defined positive!  Like a fine wine, she aged eloquently over time.  Her physical presence, influential love, and unwavering positive spirit will forever be cherished and missed by all that knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Karin Fortner of Amherst, OH, Robert “Bob” (Sandy) Matakovich of Amherst, OH, Martin “Marty” (Lisa) Matakovich of Bay Village, OH, and John “Johnny” (Lauri) Matakovich of Lorain, OH;  grandchildren, Ashley Fortner of Lorain, OH, Kaitlynn Fortner of Amarillo, TX, Anthony (Linda) Matakovich of North Ridgeville, OH, Andrew Matakovich and Allen Matakovich both of Amherst, OH, Mitchell Matakovich and Lauren Matakovich both of Bay Village, OH, John Matakovich and Emily Matakovich both of Lorain.

John Charles Olmsted - January 24, 1942 - August 02, 2021

Departed: 08/02/2021 (Lorain)
Obituary Preview: John Charles Olmsted died on the morning of August 2, 2021 at the age of 79. His family is grateful for the years they shared with him after his Alzheimer's disease diagnosis in 2016.
John was born in Windsor, Canada, to Kathleen and Charles Olmsted. Though he had no siblings, he was dearly loved by his mother's sisters Louella, Leila, Violet, and Beatrice, and his father's sister, Margery. John moved to the United States and earned his doctorate at Harvard University in 1972. He taught English at Oberlin College for forty years, specializing in Victorian prose, poetry, and painting. Among his fondest memories were his years directing Oberlin's programs in London, England, and Strasbourg, France.
In his younger years, John loved to exercise daily, a passion inherited by his son, John Alexander Olmsted. His love of the arts continues in his daughter, Galina Olmsted, now an art historian and curator. John was proud of his children for the partners they chose in life. He loved his son-in-law, Richard Betzel, and his daughter-in-law, Anna Gallagher. John loved and was loved by his wife of thirty-five years, Olga Markof-Belaeff, who cared for him with particular devotion in his final years.
John's disease robbed him of much; the loss of memory is keenly felt in a man who once knew many lines of poetry by heart. But it also provided unique joys. Each time he was reminded of Galina's wedding, or introduced to his new grandson Jack, he reacted with the same happiness he felt the first time.
A Parastas will be held on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral and Cremation Specialists, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain.  The family will receive friends on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at 10:00 a.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, 2238 E. 32nd Street, Lorain.  Rev. Fr. Basil Stokya will officiate.  Burial will follow in Westwood Cemetery, Oberlin.
Instead of flowers, his family suggests that friends make a donation in John's memory to Second Harvest Food Bank in Lorain, Ohio, or to the charity of their choice.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased or a close friend. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also assist in writing and publishing obituaries.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and online condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms allow you to upload photos, videos, or audio clips to accompany the written notice. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the tribute more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some may require a fee for publication, while others may offer free listings.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?
