Marilyn Margaret Fanucchi - August 05, 1941 - August 25, 2021

Departed: 08/25/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: Marilyn Margaret Fanucchi August 5, 1941-August 25, 2021
On August 25, 2021, Marilyn went home to be with the Lord.
Throughout her 80 years, she was dedicated to her husband of 59 years, Joe and her four children; Mark, Elaine, Joanne, and Vincent.  Her loving husband Joe survives her, along with her four children and their spouses:  Mark and Allison Fanucchi (Bakersfield), Vincent and Shannon Fanucchi (Bakersfield), Elaine and Dr. Mark Baier (Truckee), and Joanne Fanucchi-Norton and Tad Norton (Los Angeles).
Marilyn was born in Berkeley, CA and was an only child.  She grew up in Berkeley and spent summers on Lake Tahoe, learning to drive a boat long before driving her first car, a tiny, tomato orange Karmann Ghia.  Marilyn attended college at UC Davis, where she met her husband, Joe.  They were college sweethearts and the two spent many fun times together attending Cal Aggie events with college and family friends. She was determined to graduate early to marry Joe, and did so in three and a half years; all while undergoing surgery and making her own wedding dress.
After graduation from UC Davis with a double major in Home Economics and Horticulture, Marilyn moved with Joe to the Bakersfield area to begin her life as a farmer’s wife.  She was a city girl, but along with her new brothers and sisters-in-law Charlie and Charlotte Fanucchi and Frank and Judie Fanucchi, she adjusted to country life on the farm. The Fanucchi clan has many fond memories of Sunday dinners at the Lake bottom together. During the first few years of raising children and being on the farm, Marilyn discovered her love and devotion to Jesus Christ. She then devoted her life to spreading the Good News to others. Marilyn created beautiful holiday celebrations, had boundless energy, great enthusiasm for God’s word, showed generosity towards all, baked fabulous pies, a love of bright colors, adored black and white cats and beautiful flowers, (and jamoca almond fudge ice cream!)
She was talented in so many ways; from sewing to painting, to writing bible lessons to making stained glass, she did it all. Marilyn taught herself to play the guitar and soon after began singing and playing for mass at Sacred Heart Church. Later, she learned to play the piano, and was the leader of the bible study program at St. Phillips.  At Sacred Heart, Marilyn also ran the music ministry for many years, taught CCD, sewed the church’s banners, made the stained glass windows and built a community that was alive with God’s love.  In all this, her focus was to bring people to know personally the love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Marilyn was single-minded in her ministry.  She spread the gospel to everyone she encountered, touched and changed countless peoples’ lives, and was unwavering in her determination to share the love of God and the blessings He bestowed on her and her family.
Grammy, as she was affectionately named by her grandchildren, is survived by her twelve grandchildren: Logan, Zac and Jake Fanucchi (Mark and Allison), Cori and Jade Fanucchi (Vincent and Shannon), Luke, Abby and Nick Baier (Mark and Elaine), and Christian, Delaney, Olivia and Ethan Balderas (Joanne).

Kenneth "Ken" Peters, Jr. - November 30, 1959 - August 14, 2021

Departed: 08/14/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: Kenneth Peters Jr., “Ken”, 61, entered eternal life on August 14, 2021 in Nashville, Tennessee. This obituary shares the life and beliefs of a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. We honor a man who was a pillar of his community and a strong foundation for his family.
Ken was born in Bakersfield, California, on November 30, 1959 to Kenneth and Dorothy Peters. He graduated from Garces Memorial High School in 1978. After a life-changing encounter in September of 1981, he devoted his life to the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. On June 6, 1987, he married Tonja, the love of his life, and along with their respective children, Sarah and Ryan, they began a family. Within a few short years, they welcomed their daughters Candice and Rachel as well. Often over the years, he included his wife and children in ministry, and they traveled throughout the United States, Canada, and Central America together. In 2007, Ken and Tonja began a church, The Gathering @ Corona, which soon expanded to The Gathering Network of Churches. He desired to see a greater level of relationship between churches and constantly made himself available to pastors and leaders across the globe for prayer, wisdom, and direction. On his final day, he was surrounded by his family, who he adored more than anything in this world.
Left to cherish his memory are his father, Kenneth Sr.; his wife, Tonja; his daughter Sarah and son-in-law Josh, his son Ryan, his daughter Candice, and his daughter Rachel and son-in-law Ryan; his grandchildren, Tristan, Kirk, Toni, Nathan, Maverick, Abigail, and Gracelyn; and his siblings Eric, Keith, Lisa, and Stephanie. He is reunited in Heaven with his sister Michelle and his mother Dorothy.
Ken lived a simple life that transformed thousands of lives around the world, yet his greatest passion was knowing and obeying God and loving his family. His faith in Jesus Christ was the primary cornerstone of his life and it inspired many to live surrendered to the will of God, just as he did. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife.  He was an amazing father who always took care of his children and did the best he could to teach and guide them. He held his grandchildren close to his heart and loved being “Papa” more than any other title he carried. He was a caring and selfless friend to many near and far. He believed in living completely in truth, no matter the consequences. Whether he was before leaders of nations or in the living room of dear friends, he was generous with his voice, his wallet, and his life. He left an impression on all he met.
Though we are saddened at his departure, we are grateful that this is not the end of his life. He ran with great endurance and finished his race here on earth well. We have this Hope that we will see him once again and together we will rejoice in the presence of our Savior.
The celebration of Ken’s life will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Thousand Hills Ranch in Pismo Beach, California at 2:30 PM and is open to all who wish to honor him.

For the next 27 years he dedicated himself to cutting, raking, baling, and hauling alfalfa.  In 1999 he transitioned the business into chopping silage for the many new dairies that opened in Bakersfield.  For Phil, this was not just a job; he took great pride in putting up the best quality feed possible.
The hobby of the moment in his forties was snow skiing.  He enjoyed this sport with his wife and children as well as extended family and friends. In his fifties, it was all about golf.  He joined the Bakersfield Country Club and spent as much free time as he could learning the game.  His buddies there fondly called him “Hay Baler”.  While recovering from a hip replacement, Phil watched a lot of cooking shows on tv.  He developed a desire to learn how to cook, and boy was he good at it!  Cindy relinquished the kitchen to him & he cooked many fabulous meals & desserts after that.  When Granddaughter Claire was attending Veterans Elementary, she would walk home from school to our home each day.  Phil had fun preparing special after-school snacks for her; he loved her dearly! In retirement he became a woodworker.  He started by watching YouTube videos & later honed his craft thru the mentorship of his cousin, Phil Shepard.  In the last four years he made countless Wine Barrel & Adirondack chairs.  However, his favorite was the Grandpa Adirondack rocking chairs which he crafted from fine woods.  Phil was extremely close to his sister Pat.  They spent many an hour ‘cussing & discussing’ whatever situation was at hand. A recent highlight was Phil & Cindy celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary.  It was a special day shared with close family members.  He loved Angela and Tony, and they were happy they got to spend Phil’s last days camped out in our home, being able to talk to him anytime they wanted.  Phil made one last trip to his garage workshop two days before passing, rocking in his favorite chair while visiting with family.
Services will be held at St. Elizbeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 12300 Reina Road, Bakersfield 93312 on Monday, August 23, 2021, at 9:30 a.m.  Burial will follow immediately afterward at Historic Union Cemetery, 730 Potomac Avenue, Bakersfield 93307.

Linda Rae Mc Kenna - March 01, 1938 - August 09, 2021

Departed: 08/09/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: LINDA RAE MCKENNA March 1, 1938 - August 9, 2021 Linda Rae McKenna breathed forth her soul to God in the presence of her family and her faithful caregiver on Monday morning, August 9th. Advanced age and decline brought on from the cumulative effects of strokes over the last couple of years contributed to her leaving this world. The eldest daughter of John and Yole Antongiovanni, Linda was born on March 1st, 1938. She was married to Frank J. McKenna (deceased) for over 60 years, was a faithful a devoted wife, and a loving mother to her 5 children. Linda was a true daughter of Bakersfield. A farmer's daughter, she was born at Mercy Hospital. She attended grammar school at St. Francis and graduated from Garces High School. She attended Dominican College in Marin County and graduated with a BA in Music and her teaching credential. Her senior year she became student body resident. Upon graduating, she returned to Bakersfield where she was one of the first organists at St. Francis Church. It was there that she met her husband Frank, a member of the Marian Choir. While raising her family was her number one priority, she had an extensive social network. She maintained close contact until her death with best friends from grammar school. She sang in a chorus called the Music Bells, played in Bridge clubs, and actively represented her Italian heritage as a member over decades at the Italian Cultural Federation. In later years she joined the Golden Agers. Early on in her family life she taught CCD at St. Francis Church. As her children grew, she became a Cub Scout den mother for her boys, and a Campfire leader for her daughters troop. She also taught English and World History at Carden School of Bakersfield where her children attended as well as cooking and sewing of which she was highly accomplished. Linda was an avid reader, a critical thinker and embraced her Catholic Faith. Along with Sunday Mass, she loved Marian devotions of which the Rosary was her favorite. Raising her children, she insisted on reciting the family Rosary each night. She led by example to instill the principles of logic and moral character in her children. Her love for the Catholic Church always guided her in navigating the cultural and liturgical upheavals affecting the Church and society at the time. Her staunch anticommunism and Catholic charity led her and her family to host Lithuanian law enforcement and medical professionals after the fall of the Berlin Wall to support their endeavors to reestablish rights, freedoms, and free-market ideals in their homeland. Linda enjoyed traveling. In the eighties and nineties, Linda would travel oversees to Colombia, Peru, Spain, Italy, Scotland, England, France, and Belgium. She attended her oldest son's wedding in Lithuania. She spent time in Brazil on her third-oldest son's grape farm. Adventure and trying new things were welcome experiences. Linda served as President of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary following in the footsteps of her mother who was a founding member. She also managed the gift shop at Mercy Southwest for many years. Linda's kindness and charity meant that guests were always welcome in her home, nobody ever left hungry, money for charitable donations always was found, dollar-store toys lay hidden in a sack to be given to any baby or child entering the house. She loved children. She truly cared for those in need and for causes that needed defending. She put everything into Gods hands. This was especially true toward the end of her life when she and Frank needed around the clock care. God sent angels in the form of exceptional caregivers to minister with the utmost love and care the way that she had done for others. To her children, she was and will always be Mom. To her friends and family, she will be the bridge-partner, the counselor, the pianist, the clever travel companion, the black-coffee drinker, pasta fan, a dog lover, the genius of crossword puzzles, and adroit at 1000-piece jig-saw puzzles. Linda is preceded in death by her husband Frank, son John, parents John and Yole Antongiovanni, brother J. Stanley Antongiovanni and his wife Kathleen, and sister Irene Stephens. She is survived by her children: Thomas (Bridgette), Edward, Maureen Beccari (Antonio) and Michael, daughter-in-law Diana McKenna as well as her sisters Judy Walsh (Tom), Jane Uhalt (Gary), Gabrielle Weeza Vanherweg and her brother-in-law John Stephens. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Kristina, Martin and Monika McKenna, Alexander, Francesca and Antonio II Beccari and Conor Duggan and her many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The McKenna family wishes to thank Hoffman Hospice for their service and outstanding support that they provided over the last years and in recent days. The same whole-hearted gratitude is extended to the team of caregivers who cared 24 hours a day, for over 6 years, with love and compassion for both Linda and Frank. A rosary will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Friday evening, August 13th, at 7:00PM. The funeral mass will be held at St. Francis, Saturday, August 14th, at 1:30PM. Jo Ann (Frith) Wilson - Unknown - July 21, 2021

Departed: 07/21/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: Jo Ann (Frith) Wilson
On July 21, 2021, Jo Ann (Frith) Wilson passed away peacefully at the age of 79 in Phoenix, AZ.
Jo Ann was born in 1942, in Richmond, CA, to parents Jerry and Berniece Frith. They later moved to Bakersfield, where she attended elementary and high school. In 1961, she had her only child -- a son, Mark Woods -- with her first husband, Keith Woods. After their divorce, Jo Ann worked hard as a single mother, in numerous administrative positions for law offices, real estate and banking. Throughout her career, she also owned a salon and a clothing store, but her favorite job was as the owner of a florist shop in the Bay Area, which she enjoyed immensely. She met her current husband, Wayne Wilson, in Benicia, CA and they were married in 1988. They relocated to Avondale, AZ, in 1998, where Jo Ann then worked as a bookkeeper for a non-profit and finally retired in 2013.
Jo Ann was always a perfectionist, and she embodied that trait in all aspects of her life. In her younger years, she loved sewing and made many of her own clothes and household items. She loved her home and loved being there. Her favorite travel destination was California’s Central Coast, which she tried to visit whenever possible. More than probably anything, Jo Ann loved her pets, and she had numerous furry companions over the years. If she found a stray animal in need, she couldn’t say no.
Jo Ann is predeceased by her mother, Berniece; her father, Jerry; her sister, Diane (Frith) Gouge; and her first husband, Keith Woods. She is survived by her current husband, Wayne, in Avondale AZ; her son, Mark, and his partner, Christopher; her brother, Jerry Frith (Jr), and his wife, Kathy; and her brother-in-law, Dick Gouge. Jo Ann will be sorely missed by all who loved her.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at Union Cemetery, 703 E. Potomac Avenue, in Bakersfield.

Miguel Iturriria - March 03, 1935 - July 15, 2021

Departed: 07/15/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: Services will be held Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 900 H Street, with a Rosary at 9:30 AM and Funeral Mass at 10 AM, officiated by Monsignor Stephen Frost, for Miguel Iturriria, 86, who entered eternal life on July 15, 2021.
Miguel was born on March 3, 1935, in Lekaroz, Navarra, Spain.  He was the eighth of fourteen children born to Francisca Goñi and Bautista Iturriria. Miguel grew up in his beloved family home of “Ortiborroa,” in Lekaroz. Miguel developed his strong work ethic early on when he would get up with Aitatxi before dawn and herd livestock into the green mountains surrounding Lekaroz. He graduated from the Colegio de Lekaroz, sang in the choir, and was an altar boy in his youth.
In November 1952 at the age of 17, Miguel, along with his brother Paco, left his family and homeland and immigrated to the United States to pursue his dream of a better life and more opportunity. Miguel and Paco arrived in Bakersfield, CA and joined their oldest brother Andres, who had paved the way for their employment with M&R Sheep Company.  Miguel herded and tended sheep for six years.  He lived in trailers and trailed sheep through the desert and into the high country of the Eastern Sierra mountains by foot or donkey for many years, accompanied by his dog.  He enjoyed that time and because of it he always had a greater appreciation for what the sheepherders did.  In 1958, Miguel, Andres and Paco started I&M Sheep Company with Joe Mendiburu. Their partnership flourished for 25 years, continuing into the 1980’s when the three brothers began operating the business on their own. Two additional brothers, Fernando and Antero, also immigrated from the Basque Country, and first worked for I&M before forming their own business, A&F Sheep Company. The legacy of I&M Sheep Company continues today and has included cattle, farming, and of course, sheep.
One night in the mid-1960s, while Miguel was on a date at Woolgrowers, he met Yvonne Echenique, daughter of sheep rancher Joe Echenique. The two would go on dates whenever Miguel “came to town.” On September 6, 1969, Miguel and Yvonne were married in Las Vegas, Nevada. They settled in Bakersfield, CA, and were blessed with four daughters: Suzy, Trisha, Nikki, and Crissy.
One of Miguel’s proudest moments was becoming an American citizen (thanks to the support of Marcelina Mendiburu). He remained an avid supporter of the Basque culture and was an honorary member of the Kern County Basque Club. He took pride in celebrating the culture, faith and traditions with his family and friends.  He loved the picnics where he could catch up with old friends and make new ones, play in mus tournaments, dance, and watch the pelota games held at the club. He was also a lifetime member of the California Woolgrowers Association and the Kern County Woolgrowers Association. Miguel was a longtime parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church. He was also a proud supporter of his daughters’ and grandchildren’s sporting adventures.
Miguel was preceded in death by his parents, Francisca and Bautista; brothers and sisters Andres, Maritxu, Conchita, Manuel, Paco and Antero; in-laws Joe and Lucie Echenique; sister and brothers-in-law Maria Esther, Bautista and José Maria.
Miguel is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Yvonne, his daughters Suzy Alexander (Bill), Trisha Garcia (Robert), Nikki and Crissy (Josu Cadilla).  He was proud Aitatxi to Will, Juliana, and Analisa Alexander and Michael and Viviana Garcia.  Miguel is also survived by his brothers and sisters Gloria, Bautista, Fernando (Yvonne), Pazita, Txarito (Norberto), Luis Mari (Inés), Martin José (Isabel), sisters and brothers-in-law Lolo, Maria Luisa, Lourdes, Suzanne Arrache (Antonio), Joe Echenique (Patti), as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Miguel’s doctors: Dr. Tommy Lee, Dr. Jorge Del Toro, and Dr. Robert Waguespack, for their years of care.  In addition, a special thank you to Debbie (RN), Melissa (RN) and Irene (aide) from Hoffman Hospice, for their kindness and compassion. You are true angels.

Patricia Marie Fachin - March 06, 1949 - July 08, 2021

Departed: 07/08/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: Born in Bakersfield to Ray and Julia Fanucchi, attended St Francis elementary, South High School and Bakersfield College.
She was the “Energizer Bunny” of the family. Always full of life and energy and on the move, always doing something. Pat had her dad’s gift for growing things and was very proud of her yard, ornamentals and garden. She and husband John Larry Fachin raised cattle under the Bar F brand on the Fachin family Rafter F Ranch in the Woody area. She helped work cattle, hauled hay, and performed all the day-to-day chores associated with the ranching life. She also served one term as president of the Kern County Cowbelles.
Creative and artistically talented, Pat was an excellent seamstress and embroiderer, carrying on skills taught by her mother. She made countless decorations and centerpieces for special occasions and celebrations over the years, often used when she and Larry opened their home to host weddings or various youth ministry groups from St. Francis Parish.
Pat was always the first to offer care and assistance to friends and family. Many people have benefitted from her love, thoughtful care, and kindness. She was very fond of children, got a degree in early childhood development and volunteered at Friendship House. Nephew Ryan Fachin’s children had a very special relationship with “Aunt Patty”.
Pat was devoted to her Catholic faith and had a special love for her husband Larry. With the exception of Larry’s hunting, fishing, and camping outings with friends, it seemed wherever you saw Larry, you saw Pat and wherever you saw Pat, you saw Larry.
Pat is predeceased by son Mike, parents Ray and Julia, and in-laws John and Lucille. She is survived by Larry, her husband of 50 years, brothers Carl (Barbara), Larry (Margaret), brothers-in-law Gary (Karen), and Danny and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its gratitude for the support and encouragement extended to Pat and Larry from Russ Johnson, Jeff Goddard, and Father Mark Maxon. Special friend Gretta Carver and niece Marcie were angels sent to comfort Pat in her last days. To all the caring staff at San Joaquin Hospital and all the friends and family whose love and support have helped us through this difficult time, thank you all.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 12300 Reina Rd., Bakersfield.

Rose Baggiani Munoz - August 25, 1940 - July 04, 2021

Departed: 07/04/2021 (Bakersfield)
Obituary Preview: On Sunday, July 4, 2021, a vibrant and beloved member of our Bakersfield community passed away comfortably and peacefully at the age of 80 years old.
Rose was born on August 25, 1940 in Porcari, Lucca – Italy.  She emigrated to the United States in 1955 with her parents, Dante and Sara Baggiani and her sister, Carla Baggiani.  They settled in Buttonwillow, California where her father farmed and established the family.  Rose attended Shafter High School and worked at the Buttonwillow National Bank.  She became a naturalized citizen in 1960.  That year, she also met her sweetheart, Frank, and they wed 3 ½ years later.  They were married for 54 years and enjoyed participating in various community events. Weekend activities usually involved going to dances or hosting many get-togethers with family and friends. They had two children together--son, Rodd D. Munoz, and daughter, Valerie Munoz.  Rose enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother and poured 110% of her heart into her family.  She was fluent in Italian, Spanish and English and taught her children to be tri-lingual.  Rose was thrilled when both children obtained their Master’s Degrees as well.  She also adored her new grandson, Mateo Frank Munoz, and had fun playing “La Luce” with him.
Rose was extremely proud of her Italian heritage and this was exemplified in the delicious recipes and meals she often prepared.  On special days, the aroma from her unparalleled marinara sauce would linger in the neighborhood.  In 1990, after 35 years of missing her Italian native country and all the people she grew up with, she took her family on a special vacation to visit them in Italy.
Rose was a member of the Kern County Wool Growers Auxiliary.  Years later, she worked part-time assisting her husband in his business. Though her time on this earth has ended, Rose is now at peace with our Lord and Savior in the Kingdom of Heaven.  Grazie di tutto.  Ti Amiamo e ci Mancherai!
Pallbearers will be Robert Coons, Damian Zaninovich, Matthew Faulkner, Julio Marquez, Nathan Hobbs, Andy Iturriria and Martin Downs.

Obituary Preview: Virginia Mary Lopez Estrada born November 29 1926 died July 1 2021 Virginia passed away at Golden Hearts Residential Facility in  Bakersfield. Our family appreciates the care and kindness their staff showed for our mom .  Her daughter Nancy Garza was her caregiver over the years and because of Nancy,  mom was able to stay in her home where she was born.  Virginia loved her home very much.  Most days, you could find her out back just sitting or watering her many plants, or painting  the house inside and out always seeing the color white doing laundry daily . Her beloved son  Daniel was always by her side.  The most distinctive thing about my mom was her cooking.  You could smell the fragrance and her love for people before you reached her gate. You never  left her home with an empty stomach or hands, they would be filled with her famous persimmon cookies or homemade tortillas.  Virginia raised 5 children  Judith Ann Ermigarat of Paso Robles,  Edward Estrada of San Diego, Nancy Marie Garza, Cecilia Castellon and of course her beloved Daniel Estrada who passed April 2, 2021. Mom not only raised us five,  but cared for many neighborhood children as well.   There was always an extra child or two in our home.  Mom was strict but fair, we all got the same spanking. Virginia never learned  to drive a car.  Mom would walk everywhere occasionally taking the bus.  She was convinced that this contributed  to her good health.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents James and Valentina Lopez, brothers;  James and Lawrence Lopez,  sisters;  Annie Perez,  Helen Campbell,  and Juanita Soto and of course her son Daniel Estrada. Her brother Ralph Lopez,  98 years young,  is still kicking and going strong. Mom was blessed with a long and blessed life.  She will be missed by her family many friends,  her grandchildren,  and great grandchildren.   To know her was to love her.   No influence is so powerful as that of a mother's love.  Love begins and ends there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff. The writer should have personal knowledge of the deceased and be able to provide accurate information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about their accomplishments, awards, or military service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos with the obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may accept submissions online or via email, while others may require a phone call or in-person visit.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure that their legacy is accurately represented. This can be a therapeutic exercise and can help to reduce stress for loved ones after your passing.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help to celebrate the person's life and make the tribute more engaging and relatable.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or online platform. Some newspapers may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or discounts for online postings.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or corrections within a certain timeframe, while others may not permit changes once the obituary has been published.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private obituary that is shared only with close family and friends. Alternatively, you can choose to delay publication until after the funeral or memorial service.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How long do online obituaries remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period (e.g., 30 days).

Can I create an online memorial or tribute page?

Yes! Many websites offer tools to create personalized memorial pages where friends and family can share memories, photos, and condolences.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider seeking guidance from a funeral home director, hospice worker, or other bereavement professional. They can offer valuable insights and suggestions to help you craft a meaningful tribute.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with a wider audience.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and suggested corrections.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template?

You can use online templates or examples as guides, but it's essential to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life and personality.

What if I want to include special requests or instructions in an obituary?

You can include special requests or instructions in an obituary, such as "In lieu of flowers, please make donations to..." or "The family welcomes visitors at..." Just be sure to keep these requests concise and clear.

How do I ensure that an online obituary remains accessible over time?

To ensure long-term accessibility, consider creating a permanent online memorial page or using a reputable online archive service that preserves digital content over time.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for some time?

Yes! You can still write an obituary for someone who passed away previously. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

If you're overwhelmed or struggling to write an obituary, consider asking a trusted friend or family member for assistance. You can also seek guidance from a funeral home director or bereavement professional.
