Edward Allen Joyal - June 05, 1931 - March 26, 2022

Departed: 03/26/2022 (Duluth)
Obituary Preview: Edward (Ed) Allen Joyal, 90, of Duluth, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2022. A lifelong resident of Duluth, Ed was born on June 5, 1931, to Louis and Florence Joyal and was the oldest of 5 siblings. He married Janice A. Rose on April 25, 1953, and they would later have four children. Ed was a devout Catholic and was a member of Saint James Catholic Parish for most of his life.
As a youngster, Ed enjoyed spending the long Duluth winters skiing and ski jumping with his friends, eventually earning himself the nickname Slatts. Growing up in West Duluth brought lots of adventure including a few stories about climbing the ore docks to catch birds. As he grew older, he found enjoyment spending time camping and fishing at Hanging Horn Lake and Whiteface Reservoir with family and friends and later at the cabin on Fish Lake.
Ed was a learner and was self-taught in many things. In the early 60s he bought a carpentry book and would go on to build a new home for his parents, a home for his family with Janice and several years later, helped his oldest son build his home. Once the house was built, he could often be found out in the garage where he usually had a snowmobile, outboard motor, or some other small engine that he was repairing. His love of taking things apart and fixing them was transferred on to his kids who were often assistants on the projects he was working on. He had an ear for music, a tenor voice that was heard often during mass at church and a gift to play instruments like the harmonica, concertina, or piano by ear.
Early on Ed learned the value of hard work. His early career was with the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway. He later got a job at old Central High School as a boiler fireman and earned his boiler license. Over the years he held multiple roles for the Duluth School District and Duluth Area Vocational Technical Institute where he retired as a Stationary Engineer.
Dad, you are already so dearly missed but we find peace knowing you have made the journey home to be with God. You taught us so many things including the value of faith, family, honesty, and hard work. We may also have the same sweet tooth for ice cream. We will hold these close for the rest of our lives. We love you, Dad.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis & Florence; wife, Janice; siblings, Diane, George, Donna, and A.D; and special friend, Marion Duff. Ed is survived by his 4 children, David (Fayette), Deanna (Alan) Nerem, Richard (Sue), and Christine (Curtis) Olson; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his loving dog, Gabby; and many other family and friends. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 4th at Saint James Catholic Church with burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Suzanna Beth Stinnett - October 20, 1955 - March 23, 2022

Departed: 03/23/2022 (Duluth)
Obituary Preview: Suzanna Beth Stinnett was welcomed to her favorite planet on October 20, 1955 in Lawton, Oklahoma to parents Travis Earl (“Pete”) Stinnett and Willie Claudine (“Deanie”) Scott Stinnett and her 4-year old sister Kathy DeAnn Stinnett. Ironically, Suzanna died in the St. Luke’s Hospice, Duluth, MN on March 23, 2022, the third day of Spring, with several feet of snow still on the ground.
She remembered life in the small and loving family with great affection and always included her beloved grandmother, Dovie Scott Booth, in the vivid descriptions of small details. She would tell people that she “was raised in the First Baptist Church of Lawton, actually inside the building!” Many hours of memorable escapades with other children around that iconic building in downtown Lawton remained long in her memory.
After Suzanna finished the eighth grade, her family moved to Oklahoma City and she found herself in a different world of big-city school at Putnam City Junior High and High Schools. One of her best skills became typing very fast and accurately, which served her well later. After graduation from high school Suzanna moved to Norman, Oklahoma where she lived until she was 25, then moved to San Francisco,CA, which was a surprise to her family! She lived 10 years in San Francisco proper, until 1989 and the big earthquake, which left her on the wrong side of the broken highway for a while, before she could get back to her apartment.
While she lived in San Francisco, Suzanna worked first as a carpenter on new construction, then freelance as a medical transcriptionist, and was very successful with her skills. She learned a lot of medical vocabulary and never lost her interest in researching the ways people could improve their health with natural methods, primarily nutrition and exercise. She was also a pretty good billiards player, and had a favorite place to play pool and hang out with friends.
After leaving San Francisco, Suzanna moved to the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge, and lived in Sonoma and Marin Counties for 30 years. She lived mostly in Sebastapol and Corte Madera, but occasionally in some other beautiful redwood areas and farmland. There was a time when she did some house-sitting and pet-sitting, and got to live in interesting, sweet properties with sometimes quirky or difficult animals, like parrots (persnickety) or miniature goats (cute).
The mature Suzanna became an advocate for women’s wisdom in the world, and was always encouraging people to listen to and pay attention to the eternal voice of wisdom of women through the ages - especially in these times of great need. She also wrote books, blogs, and instructional materials about how to be more creative and healthy. She wrote a couple of books of fiction as well.
She was always an artist and attended several art courses during her adult life, honing skills to enhance her natural abilities. This interest led her to Burning Man and the many friends she acquired there, including her partner of the last 17 years, Charley Gallagher. Suzanna became part of Charley’s family and loved his children and grandchildren. Burning Man was a big part of their lives together and they spent many hours and days each year in the company of other friends from the Playa Planet.
Suzanna had an irresistible urge to stay informed about the world and felt deeply about all the hurtful things humans do, but she remained to the end an out-spoken optimist, never allowing people to despair. Her heart and spirit would always uplift the possibilities of good, and urge people to keep working toward healing whatever needs healed.
Thank you, darling sister. Your only sister Kathy Stinnett, brother-in-law Sam Black and niece Tamara Nance miss you and love you forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 29, 2022 at 2:00pm at Unitarian Universalist Marin, 240 Channing Way, San Rafael, CA 94903.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They allow people to share condolences, memories, and stories about the person who has passed away.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or memorial funds established in their name.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes and more detailed biographies.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and photos.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary?

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional newspaper obituary. It is published on a website or social media platform and can include photos, videos, condolences, and other interactive features.

How do I find an old obituary?

Can I use an obituary as a eulogy?

How do I notify friends and family of someone's passing?
