Joseph Hanson Mayne - June 08, 1942 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Skokie)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Hanson Mayne, age 81, of Evanston, IL. Beloved husband of Victoria Mayne née Fehling. Loving father of Joseph Reid Mayne, Elizabeth Anne Mayne (Nicholas de la Garza), and Diana Marie Mayne (Robert Maxwell Hart). Proud grandfather of Caroline Elizabeth, Jack Reid, and Abigail Colleen Mayne; and Colin Joseph Hart. Dear brother of Donna Hakler (the late Frank), Edward (Marlene) Black, Charles (Georgia) Black, Mary (John) Coleman, and the late Carolyn McGuire. Dear brother-in-law of Fox Fehling.
Joseph Hanson Mayne packed a lot of life into his eight decades on this Earth. Born in Detroit in 1942 as the son of a Congregational minister, Joseph and his older sister Carolyn spent much of their childhood in and around churches. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he enjoyed studying violin and piano, and even took some organ lessons. After the tragic passing of his mother Helen, he gained a beloved stepmother, Jean, and her three children: Donna, Charles, and Edward. Later, Joe's parents welcomed a new daughter, Mary. He greatly enjoyed the wit of his siblings, even if it was sometimes used to tease him for misadventures in water-skiing.
Perhaps Joseph's most fond childhood memory was his first trip on an ocean liner to Europe in 1956 when his father was traveling to preach at the American Church in Paris. Joseph was captivated by Paris. On a subsequent trip with his family, thanks to the 1950’s edition of “freerange parenting”, Joseph even got lost for the better part of a day and figured out how to navigate the city on his own. These trips blossomed into a lifelong love of travel, especially to his favorite French city, which he revisited many times throughout his life.
Joseph's more enterprising young adult years led to an important philosophy: there are no bad jobs - only good stories. Joseph's varied resume as a young adult included working at Howard Johnson's iconic chain restaurants, selling Bibles door to door (and quickly learning that people don't buy Bibles door to door), reading electric meters for houses with monstrously huge canine protectors, flipping through corny religious romance novels while he minded the counter at his grandmother’s Christian bookstore, and even a strange week-long stint where he made lead bricks.
When it came time for college, Joseph chose Hope College so that he could continue to study violin with his preferred teacher. He liked that many of his Hope classmates were also children of ministers, so he could blend in a bit more. Joseph was always fascinated by all of the sciences, and tried out multiple scientific majors before ultimately deciding that mathematics was where he belonged. During college, Joseph was indeed able to pursue his passion for violin alongside his studies, and played seriously in the orchestra. It was the 1960’s and experimental music was all the rage, so one of his most memorable college concerts featured an orchestra piece with vacuum cleaners and a floor polisher. As president of the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Joseph had the perhaps slightly scandalous claim to fame as organizing the very first on-campus school dance at Hope College.
Joseph later went on to pursue a masters degree at Western Michigan University and a Ph. D in mathematics at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His research and writings as a mathematician focused on ring theory and non-associative algebras. Some of his findings have been important for future mathematicians’ papers and studies to build upon. Joseph was enthusiastically interested in computer science as well, and had many great stories about the early days of computer programming. His first professorial appointment was as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at IIT.
For 48 years, Joseph was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Loyola University Chicago. Joseph held various leadership positions during his tenure at Loyola's Department of
Mathematics & Statistics, including Graduate Program Director, two terms as department chair, and a member of the Faculty Council. For many years, he also taught Computer Science. A fun project he enjoyed was starting a new course called Math & Music, digging through his enormous record collection to find the perfect examples for each topic.
Although Joseph joked that he “went to kindergarten at age 5 and then never left school”, he did have opportunities to work at other jobs in his field while studying and teaching. He spent an unusual summer working for the federal government in the the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, and a period doing calculations for researchers at Argonne National Laboratory. Joseph was hired for his math and statistics skills to consult for the Upjohn Company, the FMC Corporation, Commonwealth Edison, and Sargent & Lundy Consulting Engineers.
While doing all of this work, Joseph never stopped pursuing his passion for classical music. He was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago as a young adult. This enabled him to study with some of the top violinists in Chicago, whose varied and sometimes odd pedagogy methods he recounted in fond detail. He continued to work part time as a freelance violinist throughout his life. In 1976, he founded the Loyola Chamber Orchestra, which he conducted for 27 years. The LCO provided orchestral concerts with some of the finest classical musicians in Chicago, free of charge to the Rogers Park community. He felt strongly about maintaining free admission to the concerts so that anyone could attend, and was able to put on 92 concerts during the orchestra's lifespan.
Joseph was also a devoted husband and loving father. His first child, Joseph Reid Mayne, was born in 1972 to Joe and his first wife, Mary Jane. In 1982, he married cellist Victoria Anne Fehling at Grace Lutheran Church. Joseph and Victoria could crack each other up in laughter like no one else. They often worked on music gigs together and became an excellent team for parenting. Later, Joseph and Victoria welcomed two more children: Elizabeth in 1986 and Diana in 1988. A fun activity Joseph used to do with his kids was write up impromptu “math tests” that they would complete and he would grade, leading to his daughters often begging, “Daddy, will you make me a math test?!” Joseph was a wonderful father, clocking many hours being supportive of his children and their interests, well into adulthood. Joseph once drove by himself five hours in a snowstorm to make it to one of Diana's college orchestra concerts, and gamely attended her various shows in adulthood, no matter how seedy the venue or how strange the music. He stayed on the phone late at night to explain high level math concepts to Liz when she ended up in a difficult college math course, and traveled to her many choir concerts and figure skating performances. He was delighted that Liz pursued the study of his favorite language, French. Joseph enjoyed attending young Joey’s many sporting events, and continued to celebrate Joey's birthday almost every year of adulthood by traveling to Joey's home in Michigan and bringing him a mint chip ice cream cake. He was pleased to see his first three grandchildren - Caroline Elizabeth, Jack Reid, and Abigail Colleen Mayne - grow into excellent and capable adults, and he was excited to get to know his new grandson, Colin Joseph Hart.
In his free time, Joseph was a voracious reader, and loved to peruse books at any library or bookstore. He also loved exploring art museums for many hours, attending foreign & historical film screenings, playing chamber music with friends, following the drama of the Tour de France, and traveling to Europe with Victoria. If you wish to toast to Joseph Hanson Mayne, his family suggests you do so at your favorite café, with an especially foamy cappuccino, and a good book to read.

Walter Karl Koeniger - March 31, 1934 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Skokie)
Obituary Preview: Walter Karl Koeniger, 90, passed away on April 21, 2024, in Lyons, Colorado. Son of Rosine (Mayer) and Karl Königer, he was born on March 31, 1934 in Germany.
The hardships endured by Walter's family during and after WWII in Germany profoundly shaped his future. With the war's economic and financial devastation, their primary focus for years was simply putting food on the table. Encouraged by his father to pursue a career in the food industry, Walter embarked on an apprenticeship to become a butcher. In 1954, at the age of 20, he boarded the SS United States bound for Ellis Island, seeking a better life in America. Upon arrival, he settled in Milwaukee, WI, living with his uncle and working as a butcher for room and board. Despite speaking little English, Walter enlisted in the US Army at age 22 to improve his language skills and later became a US citizen. Following his military service, he established himself in Deerfield, IL, beginning a successful career at Lakeside Foods in Winnetka, IL, eventually becoming a general partner in the meat business that was contracted with the store.
In 1969, Walter met a beautiful young woman from Germany named Romy at a party. She was spending a year in the Chicago area working as a nanny. He convinced her to extend her stay, later marrying her, and together they had two daughters, Heidi and Andrea. They eventually moved to Northbrook, IL, where they developed cherished friendships with many families in their neighborhood.
Walter took great pride in his family, working tirelessly to provide for his family’s needs. The family cherished moments spent traveling, skiing, and socializing with friends. Walter ensured his daughters had everything they needed and they enjoyed summer visits to Germany to reconnect with family. An avid sports enthusiast, Walter enjoyed playing soccer and golf well into his 70s, always capping off a game with a refreshing beer. Despite retiring from his 45-year career as a butcher, his retirement was short-lived. He soon joined Sunset Foods in Northbrook, IL, where he worked for another decade, just down the street from his home. In his final years, Walter resided in the Colorado mountains with his daughter, Andrea, and son-in-law, Geoff. He cherished the natural beauty and tranquility of the area, often taking drives to view the wildlife and natural splendor.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Walter Koeniger were truly fortunate. He had the most infectious laugh when he thought something was funny. He loved a good beer and had a handshake that put you in a splint. He was a devoted and loving father to his daughters, Heidi (Robert) Houston, and Andrea (Geoff) Evans; a loving Opa to his grandchildren, Jacob, Kristin, and Dylan; and a devoted and caring husband to his wife Romy.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Rosine Königer; his sister, Emily (Bruno) Krauer; his brother, Siegfried (Karin) Königer; and his beloved wife, Rosemarie Barz Koeniger. Sir Andrew Frank Davis, CBE - February 02, 1944 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Skokie)
Obituary Preview: Sir Andrew Davis, the renowned British conductor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by family after a battle with leukemia.
Maestro Davis’s career spanned more than 50 years during which he was the artistic leader at several of the world's most distinguished opera and symphonic institutions, including Lyric Opera of Chicago (Music Director Emeritus; Music Director/Principal Conductor, 2000-2021), the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Conductor Laureate; Chief Conductor, 1989-2000, the longest tenure since that of its founder Sir Adrian Boult), Glyndebourne Festival Opera (Music Director, 1988-2000), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Conductor Laureate; Chief Conductor, 2013-2019), and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (Conductor Laureate; Principal Conductor, 1975-1988), where he also served as Interim Artistic Director from 2018 to 2020. In addition, he held the honorary title of Conductor Emeritus from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Maestro Davis led performances at many of the world's most important opera houses, among them the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Bayreuth Festival, and the major companies of Munich, Paris, San Francisco, and Santa Fe. In addition, he appeared with virtually every other internationally prominent orchestra, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, and all the major British orchestras.
Music was the center of Maestro Davis’s life from an early age. Born in Ashridge, Hertfordshire, England, he played organ for the parish choir in Watford and sang in the choir at the Watford Grammar School for Boys. He put his meager earnings as a paperboy towards the purchase of a record player and his first record, a 78 rpm disc of Jussi Björling singing the “Flower Song” from Carmen and the “Dream Song” from Manon. He went on to study piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and later the organ with Peter Hurford. It was at the urging of Hurford that he applied for and subsequently won the position of Organ Scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, where he was under the tutelage of Sir David Willcocks from 1963 to 1967. From 1966 to 1970 he was pianist, harpsichordist, and organist with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London. In 1965, he began studying conducting with George Hurst and later worked with Franco Ferrara at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. After a successful conducting debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1970, Maestro Davis served as Assistant Conductor of both the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London. The following year, he made his North American debut as a guest conductor with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In 1975, he was named Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra which, under his guidance, acquired an impressive reputation through major tours of North America, Europe, and Asia. In 1982, he helped establish the orchestra’s new home at Roy Thomson Hall and advised on the construction of its organ. During his tenure as Music Director of the BBC Symphony Orchestra,
Maestro Davis led concerts at the London Proms and on tour to Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, and Europe. In the 2021/22 season, Maestro Davis celebrated 50 years of partnership with the orchestra. He conducted more performances of The Last Night of the Proms, the final, celebratory concert of the eight-week Proms season, than any other conductor in recent history.
Maestro Davis brought this tradition to Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, when he was named Chief Conductor in 2013. His tenure there included tours to China and Europe. Maestro Davis continued to have regular performing and recording engagements with these orchestras after his directorships ended.
Opera played a significant role in Maestro Davis’s professional and personal life. In 1973, Sir John Pritchard, Music Director at Glyndebourne, invited Maestro Davis to make his operatic conducting debut in a new production of Strauss’s Capriccio, which launched his operatic career. He met his wife, soprano Gianna Rolandi Davis, in 1984 when he conducted her performances of Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Metropolitan Opera. They married in 1989 and had one son, composer Edward Frazier Davis. In 2000, Maestro Davis was named Principal Conductor and Music Director of Lyric Opera of Chicago. During his 21-year tenure, he led 700 performances of 62 operas by 22 different composers. Among these works were performances of Wagner’s Ring cycle (2004/05) – considered a professional Everest for opera conductors. He was preparing a new production of the Ring in the 2019/20 season, which sadly was never realized in its entirety due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Maestro Davis used the forced shutdown of the pandemic to pursue a different colossal endeavor: an original translation of Virgil’s Aeneid from Latin into English. “I must say straight away that I do not consider myself a poet,” he commented at the time. “But as I guided myself laboriously through the opening pages, I realized I was making music. The manipulation of sonorities and rhythms and the search for ways of bringing to life the vividness of Virgil’s imagery and at times his great emotional power struck me as remarkably similar to the search that I have been engaged in all my life on the podium.” Maestro Davis completed the translation in 2021.
Maestro Davis loved collaborating with young musicians. During his tenure in Toronto, he worked with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra regularly. He provided the impetus for the founding of the Toronto Children’s Chorus when he asked Jean Ashworth Bartle to create a children’s chorus to perform regularly in the TSO’s season performances. The TCC premiered Maestro Davis’s own compositions Chansons Innocentes (1984) for children’s chorus and orchestra and Alice (2003), settings of Lewis Carroll for mezzo-soprano, tenor, and children’s chorus. Maestro Davis often worked with the Ensemble of The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago.
As a musician and conductor, Maestro Davis was a generalist for his entire career, and eschewed early advice from Thurston Dart to specialize in a period music, as many of his fellow students of the era at Cambridge did. His tastes and interests were always varied and eclectic – and he was equally intrigued in early music and period performance, as he was by the compositions by his contemporaries. Following in the tradition of English forebears he made a new orchestration version of Handel’s Messiah – which he recorded with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and was his last public appearance in December with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. At his death was working on orchestrating some of J.S. Bach’s organ music.
Maestro Davis’s mastery of diverse repertoire is evident in his vast and award-winning discography. Recent recordings include Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, to be released in May 2024; and Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto with James Ehnes and the BBC Philharmonic. Maestro Davis’s recording of Berg’s Violin Concerto/Three Pieces for Orchestra, also with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, includes his orchestrations of Piano Sonata, Op. 1 and Passacaglia. Other titles include the works of Berlioz, Bliss, Elgar (winner of the 2018 Diapason d’Or de l’Année - Musique Symphonique), Finzi, Goossens, Grainger, Delius, Ives, Holst, Handel (nominated for a GRAMMY in 2018 for Best Choral Performance), Massenet (winner of the 2021 JUNO Award for Best Classical Album: Vocal or Choral), Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, Strauss, Vine (winner of the 2022 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album), and York Bowen (nominated for a GRAMMY in 2012 for Best Orchestral Performance). His internationally acclaimed recordings with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus celebrating British composers from Teldec’s “The British Line” series was released as a sixteen-CD retrospective collection by Warner Classics. Maestro Davis recorded for Chandos Records, where he was an exclusive artist since 2009.
In 1992, Maestro Davis was created a Commander of the British Empire, and in 1999 he was designated a Knight Bachelor in the New Year Honours List. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. He was the President of the Ralph Vaughan William Society and Vice-President of the Elgar Society.
Born in 1944, Maestro Davis was the son of Florence Joyce Badminton and Robert James Davis. He is preceded in death by his wife, Gianna Rolandi Davis, and is survived by their son Edward Frazier Davis (Gabi O’Grady Sutton), sister Jill Atkins (David), brothers Martin Davis (Beverly) and Tim Davis (Caroline), cousin Margaret Badminton, brother-in-law Walter Rolandi (Linda), and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

Kathleen Anne Waple - April 12, 1947 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (Skokie)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen Anne Waple née Reichert was born on April 12, 1947 to William Vincent Reichert and Marguerite Reichert née O’Boyle in Evanston, Illinois and grew up in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood. There she attended St. Henry’s School and St. Scholastica Academy where she was a National Merit Scholar. After earning her bachelor’s degree Cum Laude in English from St. Louis University Kathleen worked for Continental Illinois Bank & Trust, concurrently earning her MBA from the University of Chicago. In 1980 she gave up her own career to marry English international banker Richard Waple and move with him to assignments in Mexico (where their two children Christopher and Andrew were born) and Brazil, before the family returned permanently to the US in 1990. Their wonderful marriage lasted 44 years until her passing.
As the boys approached independence Kathleen began working part-time at Motorola while continuing to be a voracious reader and keen bridge player. She also discovered a new passion when she joined the Saints organization which provides volunteer ushers to not-for-profit theaters and other entertainment venues in the Chicago area. Every year thereafter, even after her diagnosis, she reveled in this pastime and routinely ushered for over 50 shows a year. During the last 5 years she also volunteered on the Saints’ Grants Commission, reviewing applications from theaters for financial support.
Kathleen’s voluntary service extended to other areas: she worked at the Northfield Township Food Pantry and was an assistant ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. This service was particularly close to her heart, as she had first-hand experience as an expatriate in foreign countries struggling to adapt to the local language and culture.
The decade following Richard's retirement was filled with family joy and good fortune: Chris and Julie gave them their first two grandchildren: Jack in 2013 and Natalie in 2015. They babysat both regularly and developed a strong bond with them. Andrew married Danielle in 2020 and gave them granddaughter Lily in 2022. During this period they were also fortunate to travel extensively, including an unforgettable safari in southern Africa.
And in 2022 Kathleen received her devastating diagnosis followed by nearly two years of often painful treatment, side-effects and indignities that she withstood with great courage, while maintaining her infinite humor and optimism.
Kathleen is survived and desperately missed by her older brother Bill and his wife Edda, by her older brother Ted and his wife Janene and by her younger sister Margie and her husband Jim. The extended families on both sides of the marriage loved and admired Kathleen and mourn her loss, as do the many friends on whom she left an indelible mark. She will be sorely missed and will live on in all of our memories forever.

Departed: 04/08/2024 (Skokie)
Obituary Preview: Donald Charles Vincent Tierney, age 92, of Glenview, IL., passed away on April 8th, 2024.
Don Tierney was a long-time North Shore resident, beloved husband of Joan Burgess Tierney nee Dinkel and father of Charles Tierney, Thomas (Yvonne Nillissen) Tierney, and Mary Tierney (Gary) Gibson. Proud grandfather of Georgina and Eleanor Nillissen-Tierney. Dear brother of the late Dean (Rosemary) Tierney.
His independent Pharmacies were Ridge Pharmacy and Porter’s Pharmacy in Wilmette, and Drake Pharmacy, named after his college alma mater, in Northbrook.
Rx is the Latin symbol for prescription, and appropriately his nick-name. “Rx” is how many fellow members and acquaintances know him. As a pharmacist, he recognized his customers first as patients and took care to provide thoughtful, and sometimes unique personal services. As a retailer he took pride in his inventory management and had the suppliers to support next day delivery of prescription medicine, dry goods and sundries. Regarding any item you may want he could say, “We either have it, we can get it, or it doesn’t exist.”
He served his country as an army pharmacist during the Korean Conflict at Fort Lewis near Seattle, WA.
Outside the Drug Stores, Rx was an avid golfer. Practicing, playing, learning, getting better and always enjoying the struggle to improve. His love of Golf took him from a junior caddie at the former Elmhurst Country Club in Wood Dale, to team captain of the Sunset Ridge Golf team during a winning league season in 1978.
Rx embraced the traditions and ceremonies of the grand ole’ game. Above all he enjoyed the camaraderie of his companions on the course, in Sunset’s Red Room, or wherever you might meet. He shall be missed. A private Mass and interment are being planned Info: donnellanfuneral.com or 847-675-1990

A devoted father, he was always calm in a crisis and provided endless support and sound advice. Don could fix anything and spent eight winters painstakingly stripping and staining the woodwork of his beloved 1920’s Wilmette home. Don was a self-taught photographer and he left his family the gift of thousands of photographs detailing their lives and adventures, including camper trips, vacations to Hilton Head, birthdays and weddings. Don captured it all.
Don was known for his kindness and integrity, and he established many close and lasting friendships. In retirement, Don and Nancy took their sense of adventure around the world, visiting all seven continents and countless destinations which he cataloged with photographs and push pins on a map. He became an avid golfer who hit two holes-in-one, and he enjoyed annual trips to Manitowish Waters with his golfing friends. Don also contributed much of his time and talents to various nonprofits.
