Bob predeceased her on March 5, 2012.She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and worked as a sales clerk at Levine’s Clothing Store for several years. She was also an Elf at Santa’s Workshop and was proud of her lifetime membership. Connie enjoyed golfing, reading, crafts, playing cards and wintering in Florida for many years. Most of all she cherished her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending their sporting events.Connie is survived by her two children Michael and Gail Ashley of Massena; and Cynthia and Frank Harmon of Webster; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; her siblings Jack Hughes and Nancy Hughes of Massena and Sallie and Terry Warren of Massena; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.Besides her parents Herbert and Beatrice, Connie was also predeceased by her stepfather Francis “Hector” Cutrie; her brother Ronald H. Vaughn enjoyed watching hockey, football and tinkering around his home. He also was an avid reader and liked feeding the birds. Vaughn volunteered for many years at St. Anthony’s School in Ottawa. He attended Heuvelton School and later worked at Reynolds Metals in Massena. He married Barbara LaBar on August 7, 1965 at St. Patrick’s Church in Hogansburg. Walter enjoyed hunting, sawing lumber and being outdoors working with his machinery as well as being an excellent golfer. He was a member of both the Flower Hill Hunting Club and the Raquette River Valley Antique Tractor and Engine Club.Walter is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sisters, Mary Edna Bishop of Massena and Sandy Harvester of North Dakota; two brothers, Gilbert (Judy) Bishop of Ogdensburg and Robert Bishop of Massena; sisters-in-law, Leona Bishop of Lisbon, Donna Bishop of Massena, Debbie Williams of Florida and Audrey Dishaw of Massena; several nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Akwesasne: Bernadine Elizabeth Herne made her journey into the spirit world on Thursday, April 4, 2024, with her friends and family lovingly by her side. Bernie was born on August 5, 1967, to Robert and Delores Herne, from Akwesasne, NY. She was a graduate of Salmon River Central School in 1985 and Mater Dei College with a degree in Early Childhood Development. She worked at the Mohawk Bingo Palace, the Early Childhood Development Center, and the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort. Bernie persevered through many adversities in life as a selfless person, living life to the fullest while making lifelong friends along the way. Bernie was raised in a large family with nine (9) siblings, and lots of cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends. Bernie was devoted to her family, especially her “babies” (her great nieces and nephews) above all else. She was the matriarch and “glue” to her family. Her favorite time was hosting family gatherings, with food, games, and laughter meant to create lasting memories for the little ones.Bernie emulated love and acceptance. To have known Bernie is to know love.A communicant of the St. Regis Mohawk Catholic Church, Bernie was grounded in faith and lived with passion and pride. Her faith pushed her through the darkest of times and provided a firm foundation to which she took pride in. In the book of John, it reads, “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but indeed and in truth.” Bernie understood that to love, was to do so through her actions as well through her words.Bernie was genuine about her love, often saying, “I love you” or “Kanaronkwa” before you left her presence. She loved unconditionally. She routinely put others first and sacrificed without complaint. In her final weeks of life, she called friends, family, and friends of her loved ones to say her goodbye, and to ensure her siblings were taken care of. Her open heart and gentle smile invited you in. She was the epitome of her mother in this way. She made any room brighter, livelier, joyous, and magical and she had a way of giving new perspective. She has undoubtedly left a Bernie-shaped hole in the hearts of those who knew her. Additionally, Bernie had many interests and hobbies. She was a die-hard woman’s soccer fan; Bernie would set alarms to watch the US National Team play regardless of the time. Her other love was for her fur babies. She often fostered kittens and dreamt of a safe space for orphaned and abandoned animals. Bernie was also extremely creative, making donated hats and mittens for community members, floral bouquets for weddings and canvas paintings to share with family. Her departure is a tremendous loss and leaves a deep wound for our family and friends. In lieu of memorial contributions, we ask that you consider donating to the Akwesasne Animal Society. Additionally, our family would like to encourage you to honor Bernie, by loving like she did. Take love into action. Be intentional in how you interact with friends, family, and strangers. Harness the power of kindness – remember, you never know what someone may be going through. Also slow down and be present. Prioritize your time and presence with the people you love. Akwesasne: Bernadine Elizabeth Herne made her journey into the spirit world on Thursday, April 4, 2024, with her friends and family lovingly by her side.

Bernie was born on August 5, 1967, to Robert and Delores Herne, from Akwesasne, NY. She was a graduate of Salmon River Central School in 1985 and Mater Dei College with a degree in Early Childhood Development. She worked at the Mohawk Bingo Palace, the Early Childhood Development Center, and the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort. Bernie persevered through many adversities in life as a selfless person, living life to the fullest while making lifelong friends along the way. Bernie was raised in a large family with nine (9) siblings, and lots of cousins, nieces, nephews, and family friends. Bernie was devoted to her family, especially her “babies” (her great nieces and nephews) above all else. She was the matriarch and “glue” to her family. Her favorite time was hosting family gatherings, with food, games, and laughter meant to create lasting memories for the little ones.

Bernie emulated love and acceptance. To have known Bernie is to know love.

A communicant of the St. Regis Mohawk Catholic Church, Bernie was grounded in faith and lived with passion and pride. Her faith pushed her through the darkest of times and provided a firm foundation to which she took pride in. In the book of John, it reads, “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but indeed and in truth.” Bernie understood that to love, was to do so through her actions as well through her words.

Bernie was genuine about her love, often saying, “I love you” or “Kanaronkwa” before you left her presence. She loved unconditionally. She routinely put others first and sacrificed without complaint. In her final weeks of life, she called friends, family, and friends of her loved ones to say her goodbye, and to ensure her siblings were taken care of. Her open heart and gentle smile invited you in. She was the epitome of her mother in this way. She made any room brighter, livelier, joyous, and magical and she had a way of giving new perspective. She has undoubtedly left a Bernie-shaped hole in the hearts of those who knew her.

Additionally, Bernie had many interests and hobbies. She was a die-hard woman’s soccer fan; Bernie would set alarms to watch the US National Team play regardless of the time. Her other love was for her fur babies. She often fostered kittens and dreamt of a safe space for orphaned and abandoned animals. Bernie was also extremely creative, making donated hats and mittens for community members, floral bouquets for weddings and canvas paintings to share with family.

Her departure is a tremendous loss and leaves a deep wound for our family and friends. In lieu of memorial contributions, we ask that you consider donating to the Akwesasne Animal Society. Additionally, our family would like to encourage you to honor Bernie, by loving like she did. Take love into action. Be intentional in how you interact with friends, family, and strangers. Harness the power of kindness – remember, you never know what someone may be going through. Also slow down and be present. Prioritize your time and presence with the people you love. By taking love into action, you will help ensure Bernie’s legacy of love, lives on

From stories to dress-up to arts and crafts, paper dolls, trips to the family camp, and the occasional heated card game. She loved to entertain and cook for others, hosting many parties on her porch and making creations for others. Always generous with her time and talents, she would start making treats in November to deliver to families on Christmas Eve morning. Obituary Preview: LOUISE “KATSITSIENTHA” COOKAKWESASNE - Louise “Katsitsientha” Cook, 90, of 131 Cook Road, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Tsiionkwanonhsote, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.Louise was born on July 20, 1933, on Cornwall Island, daughter of the late Sam Michael and Julia (Jacobs) David. When her mother died young, she was raised by her aunt and uncle Maude and Andrew Jacobs, along with their children Elizabeth and Dennis Jacobs. On June 26, 1954, she married Joseph J. Cook at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Lalonde officiating. Joseph predeceased her on August 13, 2011.She was a communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church. Louise earned her AA Degree from Mater Dei, with honors, and graduated with her BA from St. Lawrence University, where she was one class short of completing her MA Degree. Her greatest accomplishment was going to Rome to speak in Mohawk at the Mass for the Canonization of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in Italy on October 21, 2012.Louise worked at Warner Brothers in Massena and strung lacrosse sticks for Langtry Brothers for many years, earning $1 per stick. She was a cook at St. Regis Mohawk schools and a catechism teacher at the St. Regis Catholic Church for many years. Louise was a Mohawk language teacher for 20 years at Salmon River CSD and a member of the Salmon River Teachers Union. She is fondly remembered by many of her former students as “Mrs. Cook.”Louise was a member of the Akwesasne Quilt Club. She also enjoyed reading, watching westerns, and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was an avid fan of NHL hockey and enjoyed watching all her students, children, and grandchildren play school sports. She loved teaching the Mohawk language and she often had phone calls to translate a name or recall various family trees. She also translated many hymns and prayers for the Mohawk singers. AKWESASNE - Louise “Katsitsientha” Cook, 90, of 131 Cook Road, peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Tsiionkwanonhsote, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness.

Louise was born on July 20, 1933, on Cornwall Island, daughter of the late Sam Michael and Julia (Jacobs) David. When her mother died young, she was raised by her aunt and uncle Maude and Andrew Jacobs, along with their children Elizabeth and Dennis Jacobs. On June 26, 1954, she married Joseph J. Cook at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Lalonde officiating. Joseph predeceased her on August 13, 2011.

She was a communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church. Louise earned her AA Degree from Mater Dei, with honors, and graduated with her BA from St. Lawrence University, where she was one class short of completing her MA Degree. Her greatest accomplishment was going to Rome to speak in Mohawk at the Mass for the Canonization of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in Italy on October 21, 2012. Louise worked at Warner Brothers in Massena and strung lacrosse sticks for Langtry Brothers for many years, earning $1 per stick. She was a cook at St. Regis Mohawk schools and a catechism teacher at the St. Regis Catholic Church for many years. Louise was a Mohawk language teacher for 20 years at Salmon River CSD and a member of the Salmon River Teachers Union. She is fondly remembered by many of her former students as “Mrs. Cook.”

Louise was a member of the Akwesasne Quilt Club. She also enjoyed reading, watching westerns, and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was an avid fan of NHL hockey and enjoyed watching all her students, children, and grandchildren play school sports. She loved teaching the Mohawk language and she often had phone calls to translate a name or recall various family trees. She also translated many hymns and prayers for the Mohawk singers.
