RoseAnne Campbell - July 22, 1937 - January 22, 2022

Departed: 01/22/2022 (Hopwood)
Obituary Preview: RoseAnne Campbell (née Morgan) died peacefully on the evening of January 22, 2022, surrounded by all of her children. Rose was the daughter of Mary Elizabeth and Robert E. Morgan, the wife of Edward Campbell, the mother of Colleen Campbell, Mary Theresa Campbell, Mary (Mike) Campbell-Spegar, Anne (Marcus) Campbell Thomeer, Patrice (James) Baranowski, Joan (Tim) Campbell-Rosbrook, Eileen (Tim) Knapp, Sharon (Henry Friend) Campbell, Edward Campbell, and Robert (Bonnie) Campbell, and the grandmother of Katie, Ben, Nick, Michael, Chelsea, Rachael, Nathan, Daniel, Amanda, Samuel, Mia, Christopher, Luke, Morgan, Casey, Eddie, and Paul.
Rose was born on July 22, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the fifth of six children, and she lived in Kentucky until she was two. She spent most of her life in her beloved Deer Lake—a place, she was known to say, that was as pretty as any vacation spot. She loved to swim its waters and walk its edges, activities she carried out into her eighties. She met her husband, Edward, a classmate of her brother’s, when she was a student at St. John’s High School in Uniontown, Pa. The two wed in their early 20s. Ed worked as a writer and reporter. Rose, who graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pa., as part of the Class of 1958, worked as a registered nurse, first in Pittsburgh and then at Henry Clay Villa. The two had ten children—eight daughters and two sons (in that order!). They built a house at Deer Lake not far from the one in which Rose herself had grown up; they built a life for themselves and their children. It was not a life without hardship, without loss: in the course of her life, Rose buried three of her daughters and one of her sons, as well as her husband. She endured.
RoseAnne loved classical music and the Pittsburgh Steelers, shredded wheat and congo squares (with butterscotch chips). She loved bird-watching and family-watching: never someone who sought the spotlight, you could always find her just off to the side of the center of any family gathering, laughing into her hand. When on the phone with her children and grandchildren, she kept careful notes of the details of their conversations and, at the end of call, never failed to thank them for calling. She was the kind of grandmother who was first in line for school pick-up, who would hang up your kindergarten artwork for (without exaggeration) decades. She was not a woman without fear; her later years were an example to her family of how to let go of those fears. She spent her final days in a sun-streamed room down the road from the beloved waters of Deer Lake, in the company of those she most loved.
Friends will be received Friday January 28, 2022 in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME HOPWOOD, PA, from 9:00am to 10:30am followed by an 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Johns R.C. Church. Interment will be private for the family and held in Visitation Cemetery.

Sister Mary Ann Vasil Chek - Unknown - January 05, 2022

Departed: 01/05/2022 (Hopwood)
Obituary Preview: SISTER MARY ANN VASILCHEK ENTERS INTO ETERNITY
The oldest living member of the Sisters of St. Basil, Sister Mary Ann entered into eternity on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. Her long journey of 78 years as a Sister of St. Basil ended as she stepped into new life.
Sister Mary Ann (Elizabeth) Vasilcheck was born in Struthers, OH, the daughter of John and Susan (Ondovcin) Vasilchek. She entered the Sisters of St. Basil in Uniontown on May 14, 1944 and made her Final Profession of Vows on April 4, 1954 in the presence of the late Rev. Fr. Bernardine Hvizdos, OFM.
Sister Mary Ann’s years of ministry were largely spent as a home Sister in the various parish missions staffed by the Sisters. She also enjoyed teaching religion to younger children, and several years and many of her summers were taken up with this ministry. In addition, Sister served at the Bishop’s Residence in Pittsburgh and at St. Basil’s Home in Uniontown.
Following her service at St. Basil’s Home, Sister Mary Ann retired to the monastery, where she assisted wherever she could. In addition, from 1997 until 2005, Sister Mary Ann was a faithful volunteer at Mt. Macrina Manor. As her health declined, the Manor then became her home for the remaining years of her life.
While she wanted to be remembered for her deep faith and love of prayer, the Sisters also remember Sister as an enthusiastic sports fan. Although she was from Ohio, her loyalty in sports was transferred to Pittsburgh, and many a prayer was sent for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers or Penguins. When visiting her at the Manor, any mention of sports would cause her eyes to light up! Sister Mary Ann also enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles; as another hobby, she spent time re-purposing greeting cards into bookmarks. These found their way into the hands of her many friends and acquaintances.
Sister Mary Ann was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mary, Helen, Susan, Delores, Ann, and Eileen, and brothers Michael, John and Edward. In addition to her members in community, she is survived by several devoted nieces and nephews. The Parastas Service for Sister will be celebrated on Sunday, January 9 at 7:00 pm. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Metropolitan Archbishop William Skurla on Monday, January 10 at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in the Dormition Section of Mount Macrina Cemetery. Donald R. Crawford Funeral Home in Hopwood is in charge of arrangements. For the safety of all, masks are required for all those in attendance

Why are obituaries important?

How long should an obituary be?
