Jonathon "Boe" White - June 01, 1960 - April 11, 2022

Departed: 04/11/2022 (Dayton)
Obituary Preview: Jonathon "Boe" William White, age 61, passed on April 11, 2022 at Miami Valley Hospital with his beloved family by his side.
Jonathon was born in Dayton, OH on June 1, 1960. When he met the love of his life, Loretta White (née Tooson), he boldly proclaimed she would be his wife. He was right. Over the 43 years they spent together, he and his wife built a beautiful family and enjoyed a marriage forged in faith and fire and fortified by God. The fruits of their love include his two children, Jonathon William White II (Ericka Mitchell, fiancé) and Jonetta White (G. Christopher Fullman, fiancé), and his three grandchildren, Jadyn, Paityn, and Dezmyn White. Although his legacy is rich and storied, one key theme of his life is that God's love will always follow and shield you no matter where you are. With more than 20 years of sobriety, he was a proud member of the West Dayton Club and Dayton Fellowship Club. He served as a sponsor to many and an example to all that you should “keep coming back; it works if you work it.”
Jonathon was a valiant champion for the rights and advancement of all people in his personal and professional lives. He began his career as a construction laborer and member of Laborers’ Local 1410 in 1979. Later, Jonathon earned a role as Sergeant at Arms for the Local 1410 and ultimately retired from Laborers’ District Eight Regional Organizing Committee (DEROC) where he worked as a union organizer. Upon his retirement, Jonathon and his wife co-founded a construction company, White & White Construction, LLC, which created stable job opportunities for all kinds of people, especially minorities and those in need of a second chance at life. Furthermore, Jonathon was an active member of the NAACP and a stalwart supporter of the organization’s advocacy work as well.
Jonathon often credited his relationship with God as being foundational to his success in his sobriety, career, entrepreneurial endeavors, and more, and he was a committed member of Power for Life Ministries International based in Byron, GA under the leadership of Apostle Jerry and Prophetess Dr. Cheryl Marks.
Jonathon brought people together; he made them laugh and feel safe to be themselves. He was a vibrant soul, loyal friend, and a fierce protector of those he loved. While his physical form no longer tarries, his legend is immortal.
Jonathon is preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Ruby Lee White (née Davis), and his brothers, Arthur (Betty) Worlds and Willie White, Jr. In addition to his wife, son, daughter, and grandchildren, he is survived by his brother, Jerry (Anita) White; his niece, Natasha White; his nephews, Michael White-Sloan (Monique Byrd, fiancé), Jerry White, Jr., and Corey White; and his great nephews, Terry Talbott, Jr., Terrence Talbott, Michael White-Sloan, Jr., and Mason White-Sloan. He is also survived by six sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

It will begin with a viewing at 10:00 AM and funeral service at 11:00 AM, both held at Donald Jordan Memorial Chapel | 4882 Germantown Pike Dayton, OH 45417. His interment will be held immediately following the funeral service at West Memory Gardens | 6722 Hemple Rd, Moraine, OH 45439. Paul Terrence Lipsey - August 18, 1948 - April 10, 2022

Departed: 04/10/2022 (Dayton)
Obituary Preview: James Paul Robert Lipsey, 73, gained admission to the ancestral realm on April 10, 2022 in Miami, Florida. With loved ones by his side, he slipped into a peaceful sleep and awoke to meet the author of creation.
Born in Queens, New York on August 14, 1948 to James and Sylvia Lipsey (LeGrande), he was the oldest of four children. After graduating as the sole Black student from Presque Isle High School, Maine, he served his country honorably in Germany and the Vietnam War. At the rank of SSgt, his service in the Army Special Forces earned him a Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal.
After returning home, he worked as a material manager for Midland Ross-Grimes Division, before pivoting into his career in food service as a restaurant manager. Food service suited him perfectly as there was nothing he liked better than a flawlessly prepared rack of ribs, smothered pork chops with rice or seafood from Long John Silvers.
James, or Bob as everyone called him, was an avid sportsman. A golfer, exceptional baseball player and bowler himself, his favorite sports teams were the Atlanta Braves, The New England Patriots, The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Minnesota Vikings. When it came to golf, as his mother put it, “the way you’re carrying on about Tiger Woods,” he could have been his official paid spokesperson.
One of his favorite pastimes was watching movies. While his taste in film was eclectic, his favorites were by far the old Westerns. He spent an incalculable amount of hours watching Turner Classic Movies, along with personal favorites Planet of the Apes, Scarface and Selena.
The happiest times of his life were in the 1980’s living in Minnesota. Partying, hanging out with Prince and the Revolution, and raising his family were the best years of his life. He always dreamed of returning there to live out his days. Although life took him elsewhere, his heart remained forever in Minnesota.
The day he took his final breath, he was reunited in heaven with his father James, mother Sylvia, daughter Angela, brother Douglas, aunts Earnestine, Jean, Jaquelyn, uncle Spurgeon, grandparents L.S. and Fannie LeGrande, and best friend Deborah Anglin.
Those who live on to honor and cherish his memory include sons Robert Lipsey (Florida) Jimmy Darling (California) Garrett Lipsey-Clarke (Ohio). Daughters Amber Lipsey (California) Sheila Lipsey (Ohio) Sylvia Lipsey (Georgia). Grandchildren Kayla, Angela, Robert Douglas and Shayla Lipsey, G’Javonne and Garrett Lipsey-Clarke, Bria Koen, Hatari West, Jimmy and Jordy Darling. Great- Grandchildren Chela Koen, Koheir and Kavari West. Brothers Phillip and Christopher Lipsey (Florida) Sister Pamela McGinnis (Ohio). Nephews Cameron McGinnis (Washington) Michael McGinnis (California) numerous extended family, cousins and lifelong friends Mark Grant (Minnesota), Clementine Koen (Georgia) and eternal friend and caretaker Marlene Edwards (Ohio).
James loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything in the world. He was always willing to put them above himself in any and every situation and was happy to do so. The greatest symbol of his legacy are his descendants, and the lessons he imparted during his time in his earthly form. They are and will forever be representative of an infinitely exceptional man who walked this earth. Funeral services have been entrusted to Donald Jordan Funeral Home in Dayton, Ohio. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, where James will rest just feet away from his beloved mother, father and brother,

Diane Thomas - January 18, 1943 - March 27, 2022

Departed: 03/27/2022 (Dayton)
Obituary Preview: Our Loving, Gorgeous Mother
She was born Wylena Diane Hammond, in Bronx, New York on January 18, 1943 to Josephine and Wiley Hammond. Her parents provided a happy childhood for Diane and her sisters, helping her to become a strong woman with quick wit, clear opinions, and abiding love.
She was educated in the New York School System while growing up in Yonkers. She played basketball and volleyball, served as a volunteer lifeguard, and was a conscientious student throughout her primary and secondary education. Upon high school graduation in 1960, she moved to Xenia, Ohio to study Sociology at Central State University. Diane pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in 1962 and graduated with honors in 1964.
Diane married Reverend Willis C. Thomas Jr in November 1965, and shortly thereafter became First Lady of the newly started Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. Having grown up as an Episcopalian in New York, it wasn’t easy finding her fit, understanding the norms and making her way in this new world, while working full time. She grew to love the church but never became churchy. This is where she was first affectionately nicknamed, “Lady Di”.
Willis and Diane welcomed three children to their union, Talmadge J’von in 1966, Illya Torrance in 1970 and Tegitra Kareem in 1972. Numerous families within Canaan rallied to support their growing First Family. Diane developed rich and life-long relationships during this time, with some who served as friends and mentors later becoming her extended spiritual family. This community remained connected when Pastor Thomas moved the family to Wichita, Kansas in 1973, and when Diane moved to Durham, North Carolina with the boys in 1976, welcoming her back to Dayton in 1985. Diane was gifted, called and equipped as a teacher. She wasn’t one to tell from a distance but instead would engage and show up close, modeling and participating to demonstrate how things were to be done. She did this in formal roles as a teacher’s aide in the Durham city school system, as a Social Worker in Dayton schools and at Daybreak social service agency. Diane further developed her gift, earning a Masters Degree in Sociology from the University of Dayton in 1993. She modeled this even after retiring and moving to Cincinnati, as a part of the Zion Global Ministries’ Awana program–where she met new friends who helped the city feel like home. She could often be heard saying, “come here, let me show you.”
Diane wanted the best for her people and for us to represent the race with dignity. She mentioned many times that her mother termed her “the little revolutionary”, and claimed she and her sisters refused to ride the back of a bus before Rosa Parks. She believed in doing all things “decent and in order”. She understood the significance of Barack Obama becoming president, and was outraged that Michelle wore a sleeveless dress, debating it for hours at Thanksgiving, because that was NOT appropriate for a president’s wife. We argued. We laughed. We learned.
She was a strong cup of tea. Lipton, her favorite, with lots of lemon juice and 4 to 6 sugars. Diane was honest and genuine, yet not disparaging, having learned as a child that she could say almost anything as long as she started with, “Daddy I don’t mean any disrespect….” She’d often begin a highly caffeinated input with, “Well listen” or “I’m not tryna tell you what to do”. Her candor mixed with charm and compassion, endeared younger women to her and she welcomed their inquiries. She loved to be with people, and to share her inputs as a benefit to them.
She fully loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She told herself that if God gave her children they would know every day of their lives that she loved them. She expressed her abiding and powerful love regularly, by stating clear expectations regarding how to honor the Thomas name, screaming on the sidelines at soccer and basketball games, teaching them to snap peas or plant flowers, listening with full acceptance to convey that nothing could disqualify them from her love, and saying amen as she heard them preach while either sitting in the pews or streaming a service online. Diane was present. She wanted them to see her…hear her…know her. They do.
In December 1988 Diane became deathly ill. Her entire family was summoned to Dayton because she wasn’t expected to see Christmas. She saw that one and 32 more, winning an often daily fight with Addison’s disease, and later congestive heart failure. It was frustrating at times and she never rested well with the pokes, prodding and loud talking in the hospital.
In the early morning of March 27th, having loved, taught, and given all, she received her final rest. Diane leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy that will live on through her sons, her aunt, multiple cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended spiritual family. We now put into practice what we have seen, heard and experienced in her.

During his lifetime, Charles left an everlasting impact on anyone he came in contact with. The RESPECT his name and presence commanded will continuously be felt and remembered. Although he would say "Don't put my business in the streets, it's fair to briefly share a few things...
Charles was an exceptional cook who would always say "just taste it" no matter how much you were against trying new things. He was a talented musician who was known for his singing and guitar playing; he actually sang some gospel in his younger days. Along with his children, he was like a father or uncle to many, always sharing his wisdom or teaching something whether you asked for it or not. He was an avid motorcyclist who I'm sure most of us learned to ride from. Charles also had an amazing skill for carpentry which was exemplified in the work he put into his properties and projects. Those are all the things that will be missed most about him.
That Mr. Know-it-all personality, that strong ability of persuasion, and mostly his tenacious devotion to whom and what he loved. Behind that tough bruiser exterior he was a warm hearted, compassionate, man with a heart like no other with the ones he loved. He will truly be missed beyond what words can describe. Knowing we'll see him once again will sustain us for the time being but.... Until we meet him again, just remember the infamous phrase he used before hanging up or parting ways with you..... "In a Minute"!!!.
