John Hoyt Scofield - August 12, 1935 - December 16, 2023

Departed: 12/16/2023 (Stephens City)
Obituary Preview: John Hoyt Scofield passed from this life on December 16th, 2023, at the age of 88. He and his wife, Jeanette Lalonde Scofield, journeyed together for many years as life partners, as friends, and as a couple with extraordinary interests and abilities. They often shared conversation and a drink in the early evening, reflecting on their family, the day's work, and the opportunities tomorrow would bring. Born in 1935 to a German-American mother and an Army officer father, John and his brother, David, traveled extensively as children. Especially formative were John's years on his aunt and uncle's Michigan farm, where he lived during his father's service in World War II. There, he experienced life in a large extended family, cared for livestock, and spent considerable time exploring outdoors. John graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia in 1953, where he played guard on the football team, rowed crew, built a masonry barbecue grill for his parents' backyard, and remained lifelong friends with six classmates. He went on to graduate from Ursinus College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, and engaged in graduate work in statistics at George Washington University. As a young professional, John lived and worked near Washington, D.C., sailed and dived in the Caribbean, and skied in Europe and the Rocky Mountains. In his 30s, he reoriented his professional course and established a home improvement contracting business in which he traded seated corporate work for handicraft, self-reliance, and creating useful, enduring projects reflecting his character. In later years, he and Jeanette refurbished a log farmhouse near Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and a Cajun cabin in Arnaudville, Louisiana while also spending treasured time with their family. Known as "Pop Pop" to his grandchildren, John shared a perpetual sense of humor and an enjoyment of life's daily tasks and natural beauty. Surviving John are his wife, Jeanette Lalonde Scofield, stepson Jon Jones (Lori), stepdaughter Jodi Jones Smith (Ron Kesner), niece Tara Vogill, nephew Jeff Scofield, and five grandchildren: Zebulon Jones (Erika Chow), Emilia McNeill (Thomas), Benjamin Jones, Jacob Smith (Isabelle Fairineau), and Victoria Jones. Preceding him in death were his parents, Major General Herbert Lucian Scofield and Rosa Bertha (Ashfal) Scofield, his brother David H. Scofield, and his grandson, Nicholas Todd Smith. John believed his soul's journey would conclude concurrently with that of his physical form, and requested no religious services after his death. His family remains grateful for his devoted, inquisitive, and loving spirit, which endures in each of them.
