Obituary Preview: Josephine M. (“Jo”) Alexander Whitesboro, NY Josephine (“Jo”) Alexander of Whitesboro died peacefully on April 13, 2024 in the presence of her loving family. She was 84 and left this life with the same dignity with which she lived it. For all who had the privilege of knowing her, Jo was a remarkable and accomplished woman who combined great intellect with a loving spirit and an engaging and vibrant manner, a vibrancy she maintained throughout her life. In a phrase, “she got older, but she never got old.”
Jo was born Josephine Marie Pellegrino in Warsaw, New York and attended Buffalo State University, graduating with a degree in Education. She then attained a Master’s Degree from Syracuse University and began working in the East Syracuse School District where she met the love of her life, Christ Steve Alexander, who she married in 1962. Jo then became immersed in Greek culture, even learning a good amount of Greek but, most of all, becoming an expert chef in Greek cuisine to the delight of all her family and friends. The two enjoyed summers with their family at their camp on Fourth Lake, a love of Kerry Blue Terriers, and were devoted to each other for 52 years until Steve’s passing in 2015.
Jo was, both by vocation and avocation, a teacher and a natural leader, and in an age where women did not dominate the field of education. She was a Department Head/Professor Emerita at Mohawk Valley community College for 46 years, initially as an Adjunct Instructor before transitioning to Associate Professor and Coordinator in the Psychology, Human Services and Education Department. She was promoted to Department Head in 1993 and continued to serve in that position until retiring in 2001. Her “retirement” was short-lived, because she then continued ongoing service as an Adjunct Instructor to support the next generation of Human Services professionals. She was inducted into the MVCC Hall of Fame in 2020.
During her tenure at MVCC, Jo developed the Chemical Dependency Counseling Program and related courses and worked to develop strong relationships with local organizations in order to ensure that students had access to high quality experiential learning sites. She also served as MVCC Senate Chair for 10 years, served on Curriculum and the Policy and Standards Committees, and acted in many other leadership capacities across the college. She was a mentor and role model who made a strong impact on the professional development of her students and colleagues.
Jo’s honors were many but such was her unpretentiousness that one would never know of them in knowing her. She was awarded the MVCC Excellence in Teaching Award; the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching; the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence in Teaching Award; and she was named the Surrogate Decision Making Committee Panelist of the Year. In addition to her outstanding service to the College, Jo maintained extensive involvement in the community. She was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Board of Visitors for Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center, where she also served as Board President, and also served as a member and President of the New York State Association of Boards of Visitors, the Peacemaker Program, Junior Junction Day Care Center, Child Care Consulting Committee, Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES, and was a past member of the Surrogate Decision Making Committee, the State Association of Administrators of New York, the American Psychological Association, and Uarda Temple #24, Daughters of the Nile.
