Obituary Preview: Douglas Raymond Churcher Holland Patent
Douglas Raymond Waite Churcher died on December 1, 2022, at St. Luke’s Home, Utica, New York, following an extended illness. He was the husband of Bonnie MacLean Churcher of Holland Patent.
Born April 2, 1944, in Ithaca, New York, Doug was the only child of Mary Louise Shriner Churcher. Mary Lou’s second husband, Paul Churcher, adopted Doug and Doug always considered him to be his father. Doug was the darling of the many females in his life, which included his mother, his Aunt Dorothy, and his maternal grandmother. Beginning at any early age, Doug loved singing and performing.
Doug gained a bit of discipline, but not too much, in the Navy and Navy Reserves, on active duty aboard an aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean. Doug pursued an education degree and graduated from SUNY Cortland.
First and foremost, Doug was an elementary school teacher and greatly enjoyed his years in the classroom, where he no doubt broke into song on numerous occasions. Doug taught in the McGraw Elementary School but moved to Holland Patent in 1987, teaching in the Whitesboro Schools until his retirement in 2001.
Doug loved to make music throughout his life, playing a little guitar but primarily singing. He sang with the New Horizons Barbershop Chorus and the Lost Horizons Barbershop Quartet. For many years, until his last illness, Doug was a member of the Holland Patent Presbyterian Church choir and greatly enjoyed being a part of that group.
Theater was Doug’s passion, especially musicals, and he was active in the Players’ Theater and Rome Community Theater, as well as the Holland Patent Community Theater. Many local residents will fondly recall Doug’s portrayal of Mr. Feziwig over the course of many years in the annual Players’ Christmastime production of Scrooge. Doug also codirected the Holland Patent Central School Drama Club.
Doug was active in community service, volunteering at Unity Hall and Foothills Rural Community Ministry and serving on their boards. A dedicated donor of blood and platelets for the Red Cross for decades, Doug also volunteered as a recruiter of platelets donors. Doug was also a member of the Holland Patent Lions Club.
The sincere thanks and appreciation of Doug’s family go to the staff at St. Luke’s Home for their compassionate care and to the Holland Patent community for all their acts of kindness over the years of Doug’s illness. Family and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 1:30 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Holland Patent with Janet Stengel officiating. The family will be receiving callers at the conclusion of the Memorial Service in the Church Hall adjacent to the Church. Arrangements are with the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc. Holland Patent
The family suggests that donations can be made in memory of Doug to the Red Cross or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Sharing some music and good cheer this holiday season is another way to remember Doug and honor his memory. For online expressions of sympathy please go to www.dimblebyfh.com
