James Bernard Castonguay - July 19, 1946 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Gaithersburg)
Obituary Preview: James Bernard Castonguay was born on July 19, 1946 and passed away on April 24, 2024. In his final years, he fought esophageal cancer with his characteristic determination, strength and sly sense of humor. Jim also knew that a batch of warm cookies or banana bread could help any situation, including doctor visits.
Jim was the second of five children born to James and Catherine Castonguay in South East D.C. He was very proud of his city roots and Catholic school education. He was a man of great faith. His father passed away from leukemia when Jim was fourteen and his mother worked long hours to provide for her family. His brothers and sister were fiercely loyal to one another.
After graduating from Archbishop Carroll, Jim went to Merrimack College in North Andover, MA, where he received a BA in US History. He also met his beloved wife, Mary Beth Casey. In the process, he gained another family and the Casey-Castonguay bond remains strong.
Upon leaving Merrimack College, Jim joined the faculty at his high school alma mater and became a history teacher and football coach under the tutelage of Maus Collins. While teaching, he received an MA in US History from Catholic University. Five years later, he joined the staff of Springbrook High School in Silver Spring, MD, where he taught history and government at all levels and coached girls track and JV football. Jim met a crew of coaches who became his life long friends. Jim was well known for his scouting talents. After 20 years, he transferred to Wootton High School in Rockville, MD, where he continued to teach history and became a varsity football head coach. He was known in teaching for handing out candy, encouraging creative map coloring and explaining complex history in terms any student could understand.
When he decided to retire from teaching, he continued coaching football with his friends at Good Counsel High School in Olney, MD. In addition, he became a volunteer docent at the two Smithsonian Air and Space Museums. While there, he often taught younger students and was a pro at giving insightful tours about a subject he loved, World War II airplanes. Jim was a volunteer at heart who over the years worked to improve the schools in his neighborhood, organized block parties and ran swim team meets.
Above all, Jim loved his family. Jim never referred to his wife by name, Mary Beth was always called “dear.” His children, Anne, Jimmy and Patrick, understood their Dad would always be there, for every dinner, game, show or ceremony. He was a loving and fun uncle who played in the waves and planned many educational trips. But his greatest joy was truly his grandchildren: Katherine, Margaret, Elizabeth, James, Daniel, Megan, Sarah, Collin and Aidan. Jim would regale anyone who would listen with stories of their accomplishments. He prayed every day for the soul of his granddaughter Amy.
He is survived by his wife Mary Beth, daughter Anne Lewis of Bedford, NH, son James (Kristy) Castonguay of Laurel, MD, and son Patrick (Breana) Castonguay of Silver Spring, MD, and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Sue, deceased) Castonguay of Takoma, WA and Michael (Wendy) Castonguay of Dedham, MA and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, James and Catherine Castonguay, his sister Marie and husband Harry Jones, brother Thomas Castonguay and granddaughter Amy Castonguay.

Joanne A. Shea - January 21, 1924 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Gaithersburg)
Obituary Preview: Joanne was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania on January 21, 1924 to George S. O’Toole and Gertrude Stahley. She was the youngest of eight children. She attended local parochial schools until graduating from Georgetown University School of Nursing. Initially, she worked in the ER and in pediatrics.
She married George J. Shea on September 8, 1951. They lived in New York and had five children: Ellen, Marianne, Kathleen, Eileen Patricia and George Courtney. Joanne was an exceptionally loving mother and devotedly cared for her five children, one of whom had disabilities. She was always willing to chauffeur her children to wherever they needed to go whether it be dance lessons, horseback riding lessons or drama rehearsals. As her children aged, she was the one responsible for teaching them all to drive, which had its interesting moments. Many times we laughed at ourselves during these driving lessons and are so grateful to her for her never ending patience.
Always a devout Catholic, she and the family belonged to St. James Parish while they lived in New York. She went back to nursing part-time in 1967 and worked for a pediatrician. Frequently, new mothers called her for child rearing advice. In addition, she was tremendously helpful in caring for sick or injured neighbors. After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Berwyn, Pennsylvania and became members of St. Monica’s parish. She was active in supporting the church’s “Rite to Life” group, was a member of their bible study group, and led the members of the parish in the daily recitation of the rosary following the morning mass.
Diagnosed with dementia when she was 92 years old, she moved into a suite attached to Kathleen’s home. She was transferred to Brightview Fallsgrove Assisted Living on November 11, 2021. On January 21, 2024 she celebrated her 100th birthday! What an amazing milestone! Her life revolved around love: love of God, love for her family members and love for her neighbors and community.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 520 Veirs Mill Rd, Rockville, MD 20852, (small chapel) from 10:00am to 11:00AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial starting at 11:00AM. The burial will be on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 11:30AM at Calvary Cemetery of West Conshohocken in Pennsylvania.

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Gaithersburg)
Obituary Preview: Laura Ann Ferguson, 66, of Olney, Maryland, passed away at home on April 12, 2024 after a two-year battle with lung cancer.
Laura was born on June 14, 1957 to Robert Sr and Barbara Parker in Washington, DC. She was the youngest daughter, and third-born of the five Parker children. She spent her early years in their beloved childhood home on Grace Max Street in Rockville and attended St. Jude Catholic School before moving to Olney Mill and attending Magruder High School. She was a caretaker by nature and cared deeply for her siblings even from a young age, especially her brother, Bob.
She married her first husband, Kevin, in 1976 and they had three children together and opened a successful restaurant in The Plains, VA.
She moved back to Olney in 1987 and started working for Giant Food as a Deli Clerk. She worked in Olney, Colesville, Rockville, Leisure World, and Aspen Hill making a positive impression on everyone she worked with. She opened new stores, worked through renovations, helped build and rebuild teams, and improved processes.
It was at work in Colesville that she met her best friend and second husband, Charlie Ferguson in 1997. He instantly became a part of the family and they were married in 2005. They loved going to baseball games and the beach. They also had fun traveling to Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Charlestown, and Ocean City for a casino game or two. And they loved their dogs - Chip and Reese were their long-time companions. After they passed, Fred and Ethel joined their pack and are a vibrant addition to the family.
But Laura’s truest love were her grandchildren, Mason and Trip. They were the light of her life and she lit up when she had the chance to talk about what they were up to. She was so proud to take each of them on a special trip for their 13th birthdays - a cruise to Hawai’i. She was excited to try new adventures during these trips like snorkeling, ziplining, and lei making.
Laura is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Sr and Barbara Parker, her sister Julia, and her daughter Barbara. She also leaves behind her large extended family of nieces, nephews and their children whom she loved dearly.
Whether you knew her as Laura, Laurie, Parker, Aunt Laurie, Oggie Ball, Nani, Mom, or friend, she will be deeply missed by so many. Her love for others was boundless and she was happiest when she could make others happy.
The family will host a celebration of life on June 15, 2024 in Olney. The family will share additional details as they are finalized. Please use the comments here to share a story, memory, or photo.

Mary Doyle Wright - September 28, 1948 - April 07, 2024

Departed: 04/07/2024 (Gaithersburg)
Obituary Preview: Mary Doyle Wright
Mary Wright, 75 of Terra Alta, WV, and formerly of Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024, comforted by her beloved husband Marty of more than 50 years and family. In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her sons Marty, Jr. (wife Stephanie Pauley) and Mickey (wife Karen Hegarty); and six grandchildren (Caitlin, Bridget, Rylee, Owen, Donovan and Benjamin).
Known to all as a kind friend, loving wife and amazing mother, Mary was always at the ready to show her latest knitting creation and to share stories about her family, especially proud tales about her sons and the antics of her grandchildren.
Born in Washington, D.C., to the late Michael Murray Doyle and Adele (Owings) Doyle, and sister to Christine Doyle Janke, Mary developed lifelong friendships among her area catholic school classmates. It was there that one eternal relationship blossomed, when Mary met a young man named Marty Wright. The two grew close in their teenage years, and despite life’s separation, their path always continued to draw these two soulmates together. Mary and Marty wed in 1973, and soon after had two sons, whom she deemed her greatest blessings. Whether you call it kismet, destiny, or God’s plan, their love for one another was eternal and lasted the entirety of Mary’s life.
An executive assistant with GEICO early in her career, Mary and her family relocated to various places due to her husband’s employment, including Fairfax, VA; Tampa, FL; Atlanta, GA; Denver, CO; Wheeling, WV and ultimately Terra Alta, WV. Despite the moves, Mary easily adapted to change and turned her skills to education and held various counselor and assistant positions in her children’s schools, including J.K. Mullen High School (in Denver, CO); and St. John’s College High School (in Washington, D.C.).
But, her true calling was knitting. Gifted in all styles of knitting, her creations were often sought out by stores hoping to sell her pieces. While she enjoyed knitting a wide variety of pieces, she was best known for her Irish hand-knit sweaters and personalized Halloween costumes, which she regularly made for her young sons.
Always on the sidelines of her sons’ sports or volunteering at their schools, Mary was the stalwart mom who always remained a positive, loving, supportive presence in her children’s lives. While she will be greatly missed by her family, Heaven has gained an amazing mom, wife, Gramsa, friend and a personal knitter.

person to all. A natural athlete, Billy played tackle and was captain of the Wootton High School football team (#63). After graduation in 1989, he attended Emory University where he pledged to Kappa Alpha Fraternity (KA) (PC93) and earned a B.S. in Applied Physics. From there he earned his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland. He worked as a Structural Engineer for five years, and in 2002 he joined Rathgeber/Goss Associates (RGA) and soon after becoming a partner and worked on big projects like the Kettler-Capitals Iceplex, Salamander Resort and Spa, Mitre Office Building, Merriweather Office Building and many other notable projects. He was a member of many professional organizations such as: American Institute of Steel Construction, American Iron and Steel Institute, American Concrete Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Structural
Engineering Institute. Bill was an innovator and a creator, and he loved the outdoors. He loved to work with wood and enjoyed carving ducks. Truly he could really build or fix anything. At a young age he even carved himself a pair of skis and taught himself to ski on a local sledding hill. He spent his childhood hunting ducks with his dad on the Potomac, and running around the woods with his brother, sister, and friends. After high school Bill discovered rock climbing and he quickly excelled. He joined the PATC - Mountaineering Club and became known as the guy who will show up and go for it. His friends remember bold leads on rock and ice in the Grand Tetons, WY; Vail, Colorado; Great Falls and Carter Rock, MD; Seneca Rocks, WV, and all throughout New England in temperatures that were well below zero. Later in life he found his love for ice hockey and shared his passion with his kids. Bill played with The Aeros in an adult hockey league, coached his son's team, and loved going to watch the Capitals play. "Let's Go Caps!!" There was, however, nothing more important to Bill than his family. Bill leaves behind his wife Debra (Hart), his daughter Elizabeth (Ellie), and his son William (Harrison). He will live in their memories as the person in their life that would drop everything to help them. They cherish the memories of skiing together, attending Jimmy Buffet concerts, geeking out on both Star Wars and Star Trek, going for rides on his Harley, family fire pit evenings, summers at Bethany Beach, capturing every moment through his passion of photography, paddle boarding on Riley's Lock (often with Oliver as the hood ornament) and they will always remember him when they would sing their
"bounce house song" - Upside Down by Jack Johnson.
As a protector and defender, Billy was very close to his parents, and siblings. They talked often and supported each other in everything. No matter how busy he was, he made time to be available for them. As the first son and older brother, he was the person they could rely on to listen to their worries and give advice. He was just as capable of a car mechanic as he was at fixing the computers and TV's. But more than that, his mom and dad relied
on his love and affection; their special relationship was one to admire. Billy's family, friends and colleagues will forever remember his gentle yet confident demeanor, his goodness and his smile. He will continue to be our inspiration as we honor his life through our words and actions. He will always be with us in all we do
and will be our guardian angel. Thank you for all you did for us and gave to us.
We hope that you found peace, love, strength and kindness you shared with so many.
We will always love you. A graveside service for family was held on Saturday April 6, 2024 at Parklawn Memorial
Park in Rockville, MD. A celebration of life was held on Sunday April 7, 2024.

A memorial visitation will be held at DeVol Funeral Home, 10 East Deer Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Wild Geese
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting — over and over announcing your place
in the family of things. – Mary Oliver
