June E St. Louis - August 31, 1932 - February 24, 2022

Departed: 02/24/2022 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: June E. St. Louis passed away peacefully on February 24, 2022, at the Manor Nursing Home in Morrisville as her family kept vigil during her last few days.
She was born June Eclipse Thompson on August 31, 1932 to Benjamin and Lillian Thompson of Glover, the youngest of ten children. Her birth occurred during the total eclipse of the sun that was known to be best seen from the Northeast US, hence her middle namesake. She married Eugene St. Louis, Jr. on December 24, 1949 and they raised six children together in Greensboro.
She was predeceased by one son, Robert Merrill St. Louis in 1975, her husband, Eugene in 1997 and several of her siblings. She is survived by her other children; Elain Pelkey of Greensboro, Lorraine Call and her husband Raymond of St. Johnsbury, daughter-in-law Carol St. Louis-Russell of Morrisville, Diana Merchant and her husband Mike of Greensboro, and Tracy St. Louis and his wife Elizabeth of Wheelock,  as well as several Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.
June was known for her love and putting up firewood, making homemade doughnuts and raspberry jam, beautiful handmade braided rugs from repurposed clothes and perhaps more notably for the many hundreds of hand knitted socks, mittens and baby seater sets with booties, most of which she gave away. A true talent which she passes down to her daughter Diana.
She very much enjoyed watching the birds both wild and domestic as she always had a parakeet and or a cockatiel. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the people and family members who contributed so much to her care, both in helping to keep her home as long as possible and especially to the staff at the Manor Nursing Home for their loving care of her during her final two years. This was an especially challenging time given the onset of Covid 19. THANK YOU!
Per June’s request, no formal services are planned. Arrangements are with the des Groseilliers Funeral Home. Visit dgfunerals.com to share memories and condolences.

John Paul Patoine - March 05, 1953 - February 23, 2022

Departed: 02/23/2022 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: John Paul Patoine, 68 of Walden, VT, passed away peacefully February 23, 2022 at his home with his wife and children by his side.  He was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, March 5, 1953 to Henry and Therese (Goyet) Patoine.  The second of six children, he grew up in the Danville area.
Upon leaving school, one of his first jobs was working on a farm in Craftsbury, VT.  He then helped his father log and eventually traveled to Alaska with some of his uncles to log.  After breaking his leg and having to come back to VT, he began logging on his own for several years.  During that time he started dating the love of his life, Bonnie, in 1979.  They married in 1980 and began their family in Woodbury, VT.
He later went to work at P&R Lumber as a sawyer and lumber grader along with working for the Stowe Polo Club maintaining fences and other odd jobs.  He found his calling though in the granite industry working as part of a two man crew at the Hardwick/Mackville quarry.  When that closed, he went to work at the Woodbury quarry, eventually managing that for several years.  He went on to consult at other quarries in Pennsylvania, Maine, North Carolina, and New Hampshire until he retired in 2019.  He was planning on going back to the quarries for the summer until he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in February 2020.  In between treatments he worked on projects around his land to stay busy and keep moving.
John lived life as if it were one big adventure never taking things too seriously.  He would often say ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’.   He once told a story about some of the jokes and pranks he took part in while getting chemo infusions and was asked whether that was appropriate behavior for that setting.  His response was ‘why not?!’  He reasoned that that place was too depressing and needed a bit of laughter and fun while he was still here.  He was always joking around and got a kick out of making up and singing ditties, leaving others wanting more.
He loved traveling with his wife, especially to Alaska.  He would often decide on a whim that they should go for a ride that would, more often than not, end up at a tractor or other equipment for sale somewhere in New England.
He was a man of his word, one of the hardest workers you will ever meet and would help anyone he could.  He instilled that work ethic and ‘do your best’ attitude in his children.  He didn’t care what his job title was, if something needed to get done, he would do it.
He loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time puttering on tractors or around his land.   His face would light up like a little kid on those early cold spring mornings when you can walk across the crust of the snow.  His favorite time of year was deer hunting season and he looked forward to hunting with his son at their camp in NY every year.  He had tunnel vision for deer come fall and couldn’t think of projects or much else until all the seasons were over.  In more recent years, he enjoyed frogging and fishing with his younger grandchildren each summer.  His favorite game was cribbage.  He didn’t care who you were or how old you were, he was playing to win and if he happened to, you were sure to hear about it for a while.
A phrase he enjoyed reminding his family of was ‘to know me is to love me’ and he was right.  He will be forever loved and dearly missed.
John is survived by his devoted and patient wife of nearly 42 years, Bonita;  his three children, Renee Fontaine (partner Dan Royer), Heather Cadorette (husband Barry), and Matthew Patoine; his four grandchildren, Mark Fontaine, Brianna Stuart (husband Tony), Payson Cadorette and Ainsley Cadorette; and two great-grandchildren, Tanner Stuart and Nathan Stuart.  He is predeceased by his parents and brother, Donald Patoine.
John has requested that there not be a funeral due to Covid.  There will be a Celebration of LIfe for him later in the year.

Betty G Hale - May 29, 1948 - January 27, 2022

Departed: 01/27/2022 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Betty G. Hale, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away unexpectedly on January 27, 2022, at the age of 73.
She was born to Ernest and Faith Godfrey on May 29, 1948. After graduating from Peoples Academy, she went onto the Vermont College of Cosmetology and then, opened the Golden Touch Beauty Salon in Morrisville, VT in the early 1970s. After marrying Bill Hale, she made her sole focus her family and excelled at it. When her oldest son wanted to be a Cub Scout but there was no troop in Hyde Park, she started one. She was instrumental in leading and growing that troop during the 1980s. After her children were in school, she made it her goal to earn her associate degree which she did while still raising a young family. She worked for many years as an administrative assistant, first at Peoples Academy and then at Lamoille Union High School. The spirit with which she tackled these endeavors was the same spirit she used to plan a weekend trip or organize the house. Everything was planned, packed ahead of time, and lists… there were so many lists.
She was the best wife, mother, and grandmother (Meme) anyone could ever hope for. Her family knew that she lived for them and the feeling was mutual. She loved to paint, cook, and take care of her family. Many great memories remain of trips to Maine and summers spent at Lake Eden. Each with prepacked sandwiches and snacks for the entire stay. You never left hungry.
A devoted grandmother, she always made time for her grandchildren. She made delicious whoopie pies for Eli and always had M&Ms for Parker. She cherished her time and conversations with Olivia. They had a special bond that will endure.
A proud mother, she was the biggest cheerleader and most faithful supporter of her children.  She was Dan’s rock and support.  She was Jason’s heart and soul. She was Tricia’s best friend and confidant. There was rarely a day without a phone call or two between her and her children.
A loving wife, she enjoyed taking scenic drives with Bill to the coast of Maine or just to their camp in the woods of Vermont. She found peace and relaxation just spending time with Bill and watching the cardinals visit the deck. Betty and Bill's devotion to each other was unparalleled. They were and are true soul mates and loved, laughed, and cared for one another for over 51 years of marriage.

Ellen Prouty - September 10, 1927 - January 07, 2022

Departed: 01/07/2022 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Ellen Talhaber Prouty passed peacefully in her sleep at age 94 on January 7, 2022 at The Manor in Morrisville. She was born in Geneva, Switzerland on September 10, 1927, and attended the International School of Geneva until World War II forced the family to leave the country.
The family’s vacation house in Kitzbühel, Austria became their year-round home after the war. From a young age, Ellen enjoyed skiing, hiking and horseback riding with her father. She returned to Switzerland to study at the University of Geneva, where she earned her Master’s degree in Economics. After graduating, she was employed by ALCAN in Geneva and in 1955 accepted a position in the company’s NYC office.
She met her future husband George (Jed) Prouty at the party of a mutual friend. They shared a love of the mountains, and an invitation (or a few) to his Stowe ski chalet on the Mountain Road launched their union. They married in Innsbruck, Austria and, fittingly, honeymooned in the ski resort of St. Anton.
Once settled in Stowe, Ellen and Jed built two rental chalets and welcomed many returning guests turned friends. Ellen’s passion for vegetable and especially flower gardening took root here, and over time she became known among family and friends as the composting queen – her rich garden soil was legendary and yielded beautiful beds and bountiful harvests. She was also an avid mushroom hunter and wonderful home cook.
She was a bookkeeper for Van Blarcom and Harrison for 19 years; a part-time gardener and bookkeeper for Stoweflake Mountain Resort, and bookkeeper for Stowe Family Dentistry. Once Ellen’s four children shipped out, Ellen finally had time to take up other pursuits, including yoga, meditation and dreamwork.
In 1998, Ellen and Jed sold their Stowe home of 40+ years and moved into an apartment built onto their daughter’s and son-in-law’s home in Johnson. With this move, Ellen was able to more fully devote herself to her flower gardens – up to six or eight hours a day – much to the enjoyment of neighbors jogging or walking by. And, as her son-in-law Eric would quip, she sure increased the property value! She redoubled her efforts when invited to be a featured stop on the Lamoille Valley Garden Tour one summer. Watercolor painting turned into another hobby and expression of Ellen’s love of the mountains in her 70s. Her friend Rose Marie Carruth took her on scenic driving tours, and Ellen would paint from the landscape photos she took on those rides. To hone her skills, she joined a weekly painting group in Johnson, walking the mile and a half downtown, carrying her rucksack of painting supplies. Numerous times a neighbor would stop to ask Ellen if she’d like a lift up the steep hill on her way home. To which she inevitably replied, “Oh no, thank you, this is my favorite part!”
With her dedicated hiking friend Lynn Jeffery, Ellen explored many local mountains and made several hiking trips to the Austrian and Italian Alps, her last one taken when she was 85 years old. She cross-country skied into her late 80s and treasured skiing and lake visits with her cousin Joan Argentero as recently as her last birthday in September. Reading groups, chamber concerts and Met operas, along with foraging and quantum physics study with her friend Ed Salvas, rounded out her activities.
Throughout, Ellen was devoted to family, supporting their (ad)ventures, being the perfect next-door Mimi, but never intrusive. She loved to listen to her granddaughters play cello and piano, and thrilled to watch her grandson ski jumping on ever bigger hills. As her dementia progressed, she delighted in observing her great-grandchildren playing around her and receiving their hugs. She was ever humble, kind and thoughtful and radiated calm, loving warmth.
Ellen leaves behind her four children, Ingrid Nuse (Eric), Eric, Rolf (Freda) and Hans; three grandchildren, Liana Nuse, Maya Prouty and Landon Livreri; four step-grandchildren, Anna (J), Kyle (Michael), Kim and Zachary (Emily); and five step-great-grandchildren, Asha, Olive, Pepper, Katherine and Hudson. Her husband Jed predeceased her.
The family is grateful for the good care she received at Forest Hill and The Manor, as well as that of caregivers Mel, Carol and Cindy during the past year that she was at home.
A memorial hike with family and friends is planned for this spring. Memories and condolences are welcome at www.dgfunerals.com.

Curtis Roy Whiteway - November 03, 1925 - December 27, 2021

Departed: 12/27/2021 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Curtis Roy Whiteway (96). Born in Nov. 3, 1925, he and his family lived in Franklin Park, Boston, Massachusetts. His mother was named Katherine (Curtis) Whiteway, nicknamed Kitty; she was a teacher and registered nurse. Ray Whiteway, their father, worked in the trades. He had one sister named Loris. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Whiteway (married in April of 1949) and his three children: Curtis Jr. Whiteway, Kerry Edmunds, Doreen Chambers. Paula Donaghy passed away in 2016. He had three grandchildren: Jeanne Ball, Brooke Lorentzen, and Kristian Donaghy and a great-granddaughter: Kaitlyn Donaghy.
A week before he passed, he woke up briefly to tell a visiting friend, “I dreamt I was a cowboy fighting my last battle with the bad guys (he had watched his favorite TV series, Gunsmoke earlier in the day). She added, “We know what battle that really was.” He shall be remembered riding up to the stars on the wings of a great white horse covered in purple hearts.
Curtis R. Whiteway (Army S/SGT 1943-1946, Army intelligence 1948-1949) enlisted in the Army in 1943 at 18 years old and received specialized training as an Army Ranger. He was assigned to the 99th Infantry Division, 394th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company E, nicknamed the Checkerboards, which referred to its checkered shoulder patch. Curtis and the Checkerboards did their share in liberating the concentration camps during WWII and did make 4,000 Nazi bastards die for their country. He received the following military awards in recognition of his contributions to public service and the fight against prejudice and hatred: Silver Star (mentioned at the division level), three Bronze Stars (mentioned at regiment or brigade level), and three Purple Hearts (wounded or killed while serving).
In 1970, Whiteway and his family moved to Plainfield, Vermont. The following is a summary of a story Tim Clark wrote in November of 1986 titled The Righteous Gentile in Yankee magazine: Art Edelstein of the Montpelier Times Argus reported that Whiteway was being honored as a Liberator and Righteous Gentile in Israel, during the Yom Hashoa, a day set aside to remember the Holocaust. During the ceremony, eight hundred participants rose to their feet to give Whiteway a standing ovation in appreciation of a most unique person and friend. That trip to Israel on May 5, 1986, changed his life and led him on a journey of discovery, drawing from the moral sense that he learned from his early life. In 1993, Curtis attended the opening ceremony of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as a special “guest of honor” to honor the millions of individuals who died in the holocaust. Stated in a press release from Washington, DC. Liberator “Whiteway” was invited to attend the lighting of the candle ceremony in Rotunda, Holocaust Memorial Museum dedication, Arlington Honors. First Lady Laura Bush delivered the keynote address. Sara J. Bloomfield of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum said about Whiteway, “You are a national treasure. Please know how much we value all you do for our shared cause to try and make the world a little more humane, in hopes that the future will be different from the past.”
When Curtis retired he and his family moved to the small Vermont town of Craftsbury Common, Vermont. Since that time, he has traveled the United States trying to educate students and adults about how terrible war is and worked to document and teach them about the crimes of the Third Reich. He has authored two books on the Holocaust: Brave Men Don’t Cry and Forget Me Not.
On May 2005, he was invited, as a liberator, by Benjamin Meed to “Light a candle for the 6 million who died in the camps with five survivors and senators in the Rotunda. Ninety-ninth (99th) Liberators’ Flag (middle), in the Hall of Flags. Elenor Lester, Editor of Readers Digest and Jewish Week said, “Whiteway’s inner strength has always helped guide him (Curtis Whiteway) towards tolerance and respect for all life. We must not forget the teachings of our past, and gather the inner strength to fight against anti-Semitism, prejudice, bigotry, sexism and hate.” Sometimes choosing to voice your opinion for what is morally correct will not be popular; that is why it is called courage,” Whiteway added.
Over the years, many thousands of adults and students have listened to Curtis Whiteway’s wartime speeches, videos, lectures, and stories. Many of his amazing stories can be found on the internet, in books, videos, and in a variety of magazine articles. At his request, there will be no services. Curtis will be buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, Vermont. In place of flowers, a donation can be made to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum,100 Raoul Wallenberg Pl SW, Washington, DC 20024.

Mary "Lisa" Kelley - September 26, 1963 - November 29, 2021

Departed: 11/29/2021 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Mary “Lisa” Kelley, a Claremont native and 1981 graduate of Stevens High School, passed away on November 29, 2021.  A grandmother, mother, stepmom, aunt, teacher, social worker, lover of all things purple and a great friend to so many, Lisa’s passing leaves those who knew her deeply saddened.  Words cannot describe how profoundly she will be missed.
Lisa was born to Alice and Paul Kelley on September 26, 1963 and grew up just off Maple Avenue in Claremont.  After graduating from SHS where she developed and applied her passion for music and theater, she later earned her undergraduate degree at Worcester State and a Master’s from Plymouth State.  For many years she worked in the education sector as a teacher and, for a time, as a high school principal.  Lisa was emphatically proud of so many of her former students of whom she often spoke.
In November 2015, Lisa began work in the child protection field in Morrisville District Office for the Vermont Department for Children and Families where she specialized in Investigations and Assessments.  This particular role is oftentimes a family’s first contact with the department and is commonly a perceived adversarial relationship.  Lisa was able to quickly form trusting relationships with children and their caregivers and help families negotiate a path forward, toward safety and stability.  In a thankless job, Lisa was often called by families wishing to express their gratitude.  Lisa’s supervisors were also frequently called with compliments and positive feedback from families.  The professionals in this field of work with Lisa included law enforcement officers, lawyers, advocates and mental health professionals.  All describe her as a fierce advocate, who was able to strike the elusive balance between being compassionate and direct.  As a coworker and friend Lisa was loyal, supportive and always willing to help.  Lisa worked in this role until her passing and has a left void in that office that will never be filled.
Anyone who knew Lisa can attest to her irrepressible energy, her remarkable, infectious laugh, and her unapologetic zest for life.  When Lisa asked how you were doing, whether you were a friend, a client, a student, or a family member, it was because she truly cared about the answer.  She listened deeply, and without judgement.  Her compassionate nature is what made her such a great teacher and social worker as well as a caring friend.  Always up for a spirited debate, Lisa lived true to her values and expressed herself passionately and articulately on the issues that mattered to her.  Her pastimes often included Facetime with Coco, Adam, Kelley, and Alice, conversing with “her Peter,” long walks, listening to music from her favorite era and being crooned to by Tony Bennett.  Sunday mornings were often spent teary-eyed from watching an endearing story on the show CBS Sunday Morning.
She loved being with her family and friends and was usually the life of any social gathering, drawing people in with her laugh and charisma.  Lisa adored her son and her grandchildren.  Being a grandmother was one of her greatest joys in life and the subject of many conversations.  Her loss to those who knew and loved her is incalculable.  Yet her boundlessly joyful spirit will live on in our hearts, and with every glance at the color purple, we will be reminded of her.
Lisa is survived by her mother, Alice, her son Adam, his wife Kelley and their daughter Colette, known affectionately as “Coco.”  In addition, she is survived by her brother Brian, his wife Lisa and their family, her stepsons Casey and Collin, Collin’s wife Brittany and their son Weston.
Calling hours will take place at Stringer Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 8 from 2 – 4 PM followed by remarks and the sharing of memories from 4 – 5.  Attendees will then gather at The Common Man in Claremont following the service. The family plans to establish a memorial fund in Lisa’s name.  But for now, please know that Lisa cared deeply about her community and felt very strongly about issues related to mental health and child services.  She was also an ardent supporter of public radio.  The family asks that if anyone is interested in making a donation in honor of Lisa, to please consider non-profits in these fields.  A few of the organizations she was supportive of are:  Planned Parenthood of Northern New England https://www.plannedparenthood.org/planned-parenthood-northern-new-england, the Lamoille Family Center https://www.lamoillefamilycenter.org/ and Vermont Public Radio https://www.vpr.org/
