Gary Gerard Bellavance - April 18, 1962 - April 16, 2021

Departed: 04/16/2021 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Gary G. Bellavance, 58, of Hardwick, VT passed away on Friday, April 16, 2021.  Gary was born in Hardwick, VT on April 18, 1962 to Laurent and Teresa (Morley) Bellavance.   He was raised in Hardwick on Granite street with a large group of neighborhood cousins and friends to play the fun-loving games of days gone by. He attended Hardwick Elementary and Hazen Union Schools, graduating class of 1980.  Gary earned a Civil Engineering Degree from Vermont Technical College in 1982.
Gary’s first job was as a paperboy starting in 3rd grade, delivering for both the Times Argus and later the Burlington Free Press.  He then mowed lawns for a number of summers on West Hill in Hardwick through middle school.  Throughout high school Gary worked summers for his dad in L.G. Bellavance & Sons Construction.  Once out of VTC, Gary went to work for CCS Crane Service and after some time came back to work side by side with his dad. Gary worked with his dad for many years before Laurent eventually retired. Gary was always a hard-working man, learning this trait from his dad, and instilling it in his three sons.
Gary loved sports and was a true competitor from the start. It began with neighborhood kick ball, hockey, little league and then onto the real fun of high school sports; Gary was a great athlete.  He excelled at both soccer and basketball and found his love of golf a bit later in life.  He was always passionate about sports. You would always find him watching and cheering his sons, nieces, and nephews from the sidelines during their games. His passion later turned him on to coaching where he coached several local basketball teams.
Gary truly loved time spent with his children and grandchildren.  Several times he dressed up as Santa around Christmas and arrived at their houses unannounced, leaving some to wonder who had just walked in before his happy eyes and his loud laugh gave him away. He was always quick with a smile or a joke and loved attending our large family gatherings.  He loved and cherished time spent with his immediate and extended family.
Gary was predeceased by his father, Laurent Bellavance. He is survived by his mother Teresa, sons Jason, Timothy and his fiancée Danielle, Randy and his fiancée Kalyn, their mother Rachel and his three grandchildren, Charlotte, Karson and Cameron.  He is also survived by his siblings; Terri and her husband Dean Schoolcraft, Claire and her husband Rod Mayo, Brett and his wife Bonnie Bellavance, Gerard and his wife Heather Bellavance, many nieces and nephews and their children. He is also survived by Kim Messier, his very special companion who made a wonderful difference in his life over the past few years.
Due to COVID, visiting hours will be private only for family at the des Groseilliers Funeral Home on Friday, April 23, 2021.  Friends and community members wishing to share in Christian prayer to honor Gary’s life are invited to join for his burial at Fairview Cemetery on Friday,  June 11th at 11am with adherence to mask and distancing guidelines.

Hazel Faith Baker - December 16, 1923 - January 24, 2021

Departed: 01/24/2021 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Hazel Faith Schuster Larsen Baker, 97, of Hardwick died on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Copley Hospital in Morrisville.
She is preceded in death by her father, George Bartholomew Schuster and her mother, Sara Mills Schuster as well as her husband, William Edward Baker Sr (1966) and two of their three children; David R. Baker of Red Hook, NY (1985) and Sandra Baker Bloch of Blakeslee, PA (2012). Hazel was also predeceased by her older siblings including her sisters, Dorothy Sordelet and Winiked Hally Jackson and her brothers George, Raymond, Milfred and Stanley Schuster.
As her mother passed away at the time of her birth, Hazel was adopted by her father’s sister, Henrietta Schuster Larsen and husband, Carl Larsen. She is also preceded in death by three grandchildren; Kevin and Larry Briggs of NY and Jonathan Bloch of NJ.
Hazel is survived by her youngest daughter, Linda Scheider of Hardwick, grandchildren; Richard Bright Jr. of Hardwick and Debbi Howard of Hardwick, Daniel Bright of Pensacola, FL and Gregory Scheider of Redding, CA. All total, there are 14 grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren, eleven great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel worked for the state of NY for many years. In retirement, she moved to NJ then Pennsylvania and then Vermont. In earlier years, Hazel loved to oil paint and she did it well. As she got older, she did a lot of pen work in design books, was very good with crossword puzzles and had fun with jigsaw puzzles. She also was a firm believer in exercise and peddled her exercise bike almost every day! She loved to reminisce about her early life and elaborate on the changes in living it. She would tell of her childhood, of being born in 1923 and raised in Yonkers, NY and how Nick, the ice man would come with his horse drawn wagon to deliver large chunks of ice for the icebox. He would send it up to the top floor of their railroad flat in the dumbwaiter. She marveled at all the buildings being torn down on East 133rd Street and Southern Boulevard for the eventual construction of the Triborough Bridge. Then when the bridge was completed, she and a childhood companion walked all the way over the span to Long Island and back. They never left the bridge on the Long Island side as they were scared of the unknown...Hazel would recall her mother taking her on the trolley uptown to go shopping in Blumstein’s or Adams-Flanagan, two large department stores in the area. She thought it was great fun to watch the clerks put the cash in cylinders which would travel on tracks near the ceiling and wind up in some mysterious place (to her) and then return with the change!
Even more than her stories, her singing-or rather what she sang-was so very fascinating. Old fishermen ditties that you never heard of and at times, they could be a bit off color in spots and she delighted in any shocked expressions. Then there were the long-ago radio advertising jingles, she knew them all... Memories Diamonds in the mind To keep forever, Dreams are there to find
All packed away. Reflections of life’s Happiest endeavor, Times beset with strife
Or times to play. All of life, lived well, Wrapped up in memories To share and to retell
Another day. -Sandra Baker Bloch
As she requested, the family shall hold a private celebration of Hazel’s life in the spring. Arrangements are with the des Groseilliers Funeral Home. Memories and condolences may be shared at dgfunerals.com.

Mary Ida Johnson - August 05, 1946 - January 09, 2021

Departed: 01/09/2021 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Hardwick, VT- Mary Ida Styles Johnson, 74, passed peacefully at Copley Hospital with her two surviving children, James and Patricia by her side on Saturday, January 9, 2021.
Mary was born in Jamaica, Vermont on August 5th of 1946. Mary’s childhood was not traditional as she was born into a home with ten other siblings living in a dirt floor cabin, with very limited resources. She was eventually adopted by Frank and Mary Arnold to be raised and loved in Bethel, VT. She was a woman who broke boundaries throughout her life in several ways. She attended Whitcomb High School, but did not graduate due to getting pregnant with her oldest son Keith Johnson, whom she loved with everything she had. Even though Mary didn’t graduate from high school, that didn’t stop her from working in several fields to provide for her family. She worked for Bombardier in Barre VT and was an active member of the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department for about 10 years as well as loving being a first responder.
Later in life she took up a career that, upon looking at her tiny stature, one would never guess. She became a truck driver for Werner Enterprises where she drove truck #34699. This is fondly remembered by her grandson Willie, who traveled the country with his grandmother for nearly 2 months during his middle school years of school. Mary was known as 'Gram J' to all, and loved each one of her grandchildren to the ends of the earth, giving them all millions of wonderful memories to carry with them. Another boundary Mary broke was the fence between the grandstands and the race track. She raced against a field primarily made up of men. She truly was an amazing woman who loved her family more than anything in the world and stopped at nothing to show them. She was just four foot eleven and full of grace but when she needed to be eight foot and bullet proof make no doubt she was just that. Mary is survived by four of her siblings Irene Huard, Chris Merril, Marge Collins, Gerald Dean Gilman as well as two of her three children James Allen Johnson (51) and wife Maria Johnson, Patricia Anne Fecteau (46) and husband Randall Fecteau and Keith's widow Lora Johnson Sanford. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren; Willie McAllister (and Leesa Gravel), Blake Fletcher (and fiance Caitlyn Taboada), Andrew Fecteau (and Brianne Flanders), Kaylie Johnson, Samantha Villeneuve, Noah Villeneuve, Ethan Johnson, Cheyenne Saphore, Sienna Johnson, Ashlyn Johnson and 4 great grandchildren; Curt McAllister, Andrew Fecteau Jr., Paislianne Fecteau, and Willow Fecteau. She also leaves her life-long, best friend Effie Farnham. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her beloved son Keith and 4 siblings; Sonny, Bill, Beth, Helen. Those who knew Mary were lucky because of the way that she gave love. She was a strong and caring mother who softened into a goofy and fun-loving grandmother. She always made sure to find ways to support the ones that she loved. Whether that be by attending events for her kids and grandkids, making regular phone calls to make sure everyone was okay, or just being helpful wherever she was. A gathering will be organized for people to tell stories, share memories, and mourn together when a more suitable time is upon us. We thank Blake for this beautiful tribute to a strong and loving pillar of our family! Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Mary's memory to the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 132 Wolcott, VT 05680. The des Groseilliers Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memories and condolences may be conveyed at dgfunerals.com.

Mark David Lichtenstein - March 18, 1951 - January 05, 2021

Departed: 01/05/2021 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Mark David Lichtenstein died peacefully at his home in Greensboro, Vermont on January 5th, 2021.  He was 69 years old.
Dr. Lichtenstein was born in 1951 in Philadelphia. He met his wife Cynthia West, while studying Chemistry as an undergraduate at George Washington University in Washington D.C.
Mark graduated from Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in 1976, where he was honored with the Arthur Krieger Memorial Prize in Family Medicine. Mark and Cynthia moved to Buffalo, NY where he completed a Family Practice Residency at Deaconess Hospital.
In 1979, Dr. Lichtenstein moved to Greensboro after accepting a placement with Northern Counties Health Care through the US National Health Service Corps. He served for many years on the board of the Vermont Academy of Family Physicians and volunteered for Well Child Clinic Service as well as the Child Protection Team. He also filled the role of Regional Medical Examiner for 20 years.
From 1986-88 Dr. Lichtenstein was the President of Copley Hospital Medical Staff and went on to become the hospital’s Medical Director from 2003-2007. He also served on the Copley Hospital Ethics Committee.
From 1995-2014, Dr. Lichtenstein was a clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Practice at UVM where he was also a UVM Medical Student preceptor which allowed medical students from UVM to come work with him at the Hardwick Health Center. It was through this program that he met his future partner and friend Dr. Brendan Buckley.
In 2012, Dr. Lichtenstein received the Vermont Family Physician of the Year Award.
From 1981-2014, Dr. Lichtenstein was the Medical Director of the Greensboro Nursing Home. His work there influenced him to become a board-certified Geriatrician in 1992. He maintained his role as Medical Director of the Nursing Home until his unplanned retirement from medicine in 2014. By that year, Mark had served residents of the Northeast Kingdom as a primary care physician for 35 years. Mark lived his dream career. In first grade, when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, Mark said he wanted to be a doctor. Inspired by his Uncle Lou who was a doctor, he told the family: “I remember my uncle coming to make house calls at home whenever a family member would get sick. He loved to involve the families of his patients in their care.”
As a physician, Mark believed that a good doctor has compassion and remains open-minded. He always tried to see the world through the eyes of his patients, doing his best to collaborate with them on a search for their optimal state of health. Mark always believed that health is not the absence of disease but is rather a state of being.
Mark always tried to find a balance between his professional activities and his family life. He and Cynthia enjoyed world travel, outdoor activities, music, reading, good food and celebrations. They shared their passions with their two sons, Isaac and Spencer.  Mark and Cynthia spent time in Nepal volunteering his medical services and her language expertise. They went on to volunteer at animal sanctuaries in South Africa and animal rehabilitation centers in western Australia and Belize.
Mark is survived by his wife, Cynthia West and two sons: Isaac and his partner Megan Fuerst of Washington D.C.; Spencer and his spouse Carrie Leigh and their daughter Alice, of Boston; his biological daughter Kara Sweet, her spouse Kyle and their son Jackson of Nashville. Mark also leaves behind his sister, Ellen Kolodner, her spouse Bernie, and their children Michael and Louis.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Oscar and Anita and his stepmother Margaret.
Mark had an unusual perspective on mortality, writing “There is a healthy way to be sick, and even a healthy way to die.” Throughout his decade-long battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Mark’s quest for balance continued. As sad as we are to see Mark go, we are sure he is enjoying another life, free of his disease.
There will be a memorial service for Dr. Lichtenstein planned for late summer to early fall. Please make donations in Mark’s memory to the Hardwick Area Food Pantry or the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail. Roderick Dhu - October 18, 1920 - December 10, 2020

Departed: 12/10/2020 (Hardwick)
Obituary Preview: Eden Mills- Roderick “Duke” Dhu After reaching 100 years of ripe living and successfully making more friends in more places than most people would know what to do with, Duke passed in peace on December 10, 2020 in Greensboro, VT. Those who loved him will remember Duke for many things: His ability to fix absolutely anything, the pride he took maintaining his property and the flower gardens he and his wife Marion loved so much, his penchant for brandy, and the way he was able to keep a bucket hat from ever going out of style. Born in 1920, Duke saw it all. He was always eager to tell a story and share a laugh, and his wit & humor were a trademark. Never the loud one, he was quick to turn up one corner of his mouth and smirk, while delivering the soft punchline that created belly laughs in the listener. An accomplished machinist and builder, he was proud of the work he contributed to Pratt & Whitney, helping to create products that would eventually go into space. He was perhaps even more proud of the boat he built by hand, because Duke’s happy place was on the lake. Many a day was spent on or around the lakes of New England, fishing and floating, sharing stories and creating memories. Though they never had children, Duke and his wife had many “fur babies” over the years. Most notably and precious to Duke was his cat Boots, who managed to survive 26 years of listening to the same stories. His loving heart was disproportionate to his small stature, and he gave the warmest hugs. Those lucky enough to spend time with him were met with a person who was truly present and thoughtful, which is the best gift one can give: their time. Duke’s time on this earth may have ceased, but his memory lives on in the hearts of all those he touched.
On behalf of his family, we hope that Duke has inspired those he knew to be present for those you love, to laugh every chance you get, and to wear a bucket hat if that’s what you feel like wearing.
A private burial will be held in the spring. The des Groseilliers Funeral Home is in care of arrangements. Memories and condolences may be conveyed to the family at dgfunerals.com.
