Stephen Edward Piela - April 22, 1952 - March 10, 2024

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Saco)
Obituary Preview: Stephen Edward Piela, affectionately known as “Mr. P” and “Pizza Steve,” 71 of Biddeford, Maine, lost his battle with cancer on March 10, 2024.
He was born in Fairhaven, MA in 1952 to the late Edward and Olivia Lemos Piela. He graduated from Fairhaven High School class of 1970, where he was on the track team, performed in his senior class play and was voted Best Humoured in his class. He later graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1972 with an Associates degree in Building Construction. He was a soprano bugler for Post 166 Satellites Drum and Bugle Corp for 7 years. He earned a Black Belt in Kenpo Karate and competed in various tournaments.
Stephen married the love of his life, Candace Louise (Moran) Piela, in 1982 and quickly started a family, welcoming son Stephen T., daughter Allyson, and son Vaughan. They moved to Saco, Maine in 1987. Throughout his time in Maine, “Mr. P” was an active member of the community, participating in Community Theatre with the Biddeford City Theatre, Crossroads Youth Center and singing with the Tri City Community Chorus among others. You may remember him from such productions as The Wizard of Oz, Annie Get Your Gun, and Zorba to name a few.
After his wife, Candace passed away in 2001, Stephen changed careers from Architectural Drafting to care for others as a CNA and later worked as a pizza delivery driver where he earned the moniker “Pizza Steve.” Thoroughly embracing this nickname, Stephen ended his career as a pizza prep cook at legendary local institution, Pizza by Alex.
Although Stephen loved hanging out and having fun, his favorite role was as a grandparent. He treasured his time with his granddaughter, Lana, and loved being her “Bappi”, never failing to spoil her every chance he got.
Anyone who is familiar with Stephen knows he had a soft spot for all furry friends and would even help to care for the local stray population. His beloved pets who have passed on, no doubt, were awaiting him over the rainbow bridge and are getting some good cuddles now.
Stephen will always be remembered for his love of music, animals, digging holes at the beach, and polarizing jokes. He was a real “fungi.” We’ll always imagine hearing him say “TTFN” one more time. We couldn’t have asked for a more doting husband, father, brother and grandfather and we will miss Stephen every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Candace and is survived by his children, Stephen T. Piela-Fein and his wife Maggie of Essex Junction, VT, Allyson L. Piela of New South Wales, Australia, Vaughan E. Piela of Biddeford, ME, his sister, Linda J. Gallant and her husband Wayne of Fairhaven, MA, his granddaughter, Lana Piela of Bridgton, ME, nephew Shawn Fernandes and his wife Cathy of Phoenix, AZ. and many other loved ones.
A service honoring Stephen will take place on Sunday, April 7, 2024 at Dennett, Craig, & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main Street, Saco, ME at 3 p.m.
A celebration of life/reception will follow at Pizza by Alex, 93 Alfred Road, Biddeford, ME.

She was a true New Englander: deeply proud of her Boston sports teams, a collector of all things L.L. Bean, and she spent her most cherished days in the bustle of Boston, the serenity of Sweden, ME, the woods & lakes of Tuftonboro, NH, or the beaches of Old Orchard and Scarborough. Mindy loved her NYC years, but it was always good to be back in Red Sox Nation.
Mindy rejoins in Heaven her dear husband Roger, her best friend and brother William, her mother Dorothy, her father William Sr., and too many friends & family who left this Earth before her. She’s reunited with all of her black labs: Tufty, Amos, Murray, and sweet Wigan.
