Glendlen Rodney - March 11, 1945 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Donaldsonville)
Obituary Preview: Glendlen Rodney aka  “Brenda Sheppard” (BS)
Glendlen Rodney was born on March 11, 1945 to the Late Ernest Sheppard Sr. and Charlotte Rodney Sheppard. Beloved mother of five children: SON: Sheldon Sheppard (BillieJean), DAUGHTERS: Sherone Bragg (Wayne), Star Jones (Gerald), Stephanie Sheppard, and the late Serena Joshua (Quinton). She departed this earthly home on Sunday, March 17, 2024. Brenda was a native of St. James and resided in Donaldsonville, LA. Sis. Rodney was baptized by Rev. Keith Paul Stewman at Evening Start Missionary Baptist Church, Harvey, LA. When she moved back to St. James, LA she became a member at St. Paul Baptist Church, St. James, LA. She loved to fellowship and worship. When she relocated to Donaldsonville, LA she became a member of Council of God Ministries (Pastor Doris Johnson) until it closed. Soon after its closure, Brenda fellowshipped more frequently at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Welcome, LA (Pastor Samuel Jones). Prior to her homegoing she worshiped at City of Refuge Church, White Castle, LA (Pastor Frank Jones, III)
BS is a retiree of St. James Sugar Co-Op Refinery Corporation and Weiser Security. She was Supervisor Head over 6 employees throughout washing down at the refinery and seasonal work with weighing in and out trucks and Security Guard. Her love for cooking is the reason she also worked as a cook at Shop Rite. Keeping things tidy and cleaning just came natural to her. After she became a disabled, she took a love in driving her motorized scooter. No one could tell her what she could not do with that scooter. The beauty and sweet smell of flowers or tending to her roses fueled her to work outside in her flower garden, no matter if it was rain or sunshine. Ms. Brenda to some, Ms. Rodney to others, and BS to close friends and family, looked forward to attending the Ascension Counsel on Aging, playing bingo, but most of all winning at bingo. Listening to gospel music and reading her bible gave her peace. While watching Steve Harvey on TV made her laugh. Hugging her grandchildren, and spending time with family and friends always brought her joy especially in her final days. She will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

Ford Charles, Jr - September 06, 1946 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Donaldsonville)
Obituary Preview: “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” - John 14: 1-3
Humble, protective, and faithful are all words that describe Ford “Buddy” Charles, Jr. Ford was born on September 6, 1946, the third of ten children, and the firstborn son, to Ford, Sr. and Luvera Williams Charles. Ford’s childhood is marked by wonderful memories of his school days at Cedar Grove, where he excelled as a baseball player. As a youngster, Ford regularly attended St. Paul Baptist Church with his mother and he participated in the children’s choir with his siblings. When Ford returned home from church service, his sister Judith recalled how he regularly went into his father’s Corn Shade, beating his hands against the washboard while filling the air with the sweet melody of those same hymns from church. Later in life, Ford accepted his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was baptized by Pastor Samuel Jones.
Working alongside his father on St. Emma, Ford learned timeless lessons on the value of hard work and dedication. After the tragic passing of his father in 1965, Ford became a father figure for his younger siblings. From his days at Avondale to Caire & Granguard Company, he labored to build a better future for his family.
On September 20, 1966, Ford's first marriage brought the precious gift of his daughter, Karen. On October 23, 1971, Ford married his beloved Mary Martin. Through this union, Ford and Mary were blessed with two children, Givonnia Elizabeth and Carvis La’Var, and two step-children, Eric and Laurie, whom he reared as his own. In his union with Mary, Ford embraced the mantle of husband and provider with steadfast dedication and unwavering love. Ford was fiercely protective of his children and always kept a watchful eye over them. In the latter part of his life, Ford reared his grandchildren with the same watchful gaze and protective spirit, which will forever dwell in their hearts.
In every chapter of his life, Ford’s gentle spirit and generosity shone brightly. Let us hold dear the lessons Ford taught us by how he lived his life: to embrace each moment with humility and obedience, to cherish the bonds of family and community, and to stand as fierce protectors and guardians of our loved ones.
Ford leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his caring and faithful wife of 52 years, Mary M. Charles; son, Carvis (Keyana) Charles of Donaldsonville, LA; a daughter, Givonnia Charles of Prairieville, LA; a stepson and stepdaughter, Eric and Laurie Martin of St. James, LA. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community members. They provide an opportunity to honor the deceased person's life, share memories and achievements, and offer condolences to those who are grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased person writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or cremation service may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, and information about their family, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, and siblings. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, education, military service, and any notable achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform where it will be published. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help people remember the deceased person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact them directly for specific guidelines and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to have control over how they are remembered and to make it easier on their loved ones after they pass away. This can be a unique and meaningful way to reflect on your life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides more context and personal information about the deceased person.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary is a celebration of the person's life, so it's perfectly okay to include lighthearted or humorous stories that capture their personality and spirit.

How do I handle sensitive or complicated family dynamics when writing an obituary?

This can be a challenging situation. Try to focus on the positive aspects of the person's life and relationships, and avoid mentioning any conflicts or controversies. If necessary, consider consulting with other family members or a trusted advisor for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial contributions in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial contributions in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's memory and support a cause that was important to them.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some online sites may publish immediately, while newspapers may have a delay of several days or even weeks.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

Sometimes this is possible, but it depends on the publication or platform. If you need to make changes or corrections, contact them directly as soon as possible to inquire about their policies.

What if I want to keep the obituary private or only share it with certain people?

If you want to limit access to the obituary, you can request that it not be published publicly or shared on social media. Alternatively, you can create a private online memorial page or share the obituary via email or private messaging.

Can I include quotes, poems, or other literary elements in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or other literary elements can add depth and emotion to the obituary. Just be sure to keep them concise and relevant to the person's life and personality.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

This is completely understandable! Writing an obituary can be a difficult task during a time of intense emotional pain. Consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member, or seeking support from a professional counselor or grief coach.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has passed away suddenly or unexpectedly?

Yes! Even in situations where there was no opportunity for preparation or planning, an obituary can still be written as a way to honor the person's life and provide closure for loved ones.

How do I handle cultural or religious differences when writing an obituary?

Sensitivity and respect are key when navigating cultural or religious differences. Research any specific customs or traditions that may apply, and consult with family members or spiritual leaders if needed.

What if I want to include additional information beyond what's traditionally included in an obituary?

You can certainly experiment with non-traditional formats or content! Some modern online platforms even allow for multimedia elements like videos or audio clips. Just be mindful of space constraints and focus on what's most important.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template or example?

You can definitely use existing templates or examples as inspiration! However, try to customize the content as much as possible to reflect the unique personality and story of the deceased person.
