Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, achievements, and details about their life. It is usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral program to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service, and can also provide comfort and support to grieving families and friends.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or mortuaries may also offer assistance in writing and publishing the obituary. In some cases, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to write the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-300 words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online platforms and publications allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements in an obituary. This can help to make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The process for submitting an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. You can usually find submission guidelines on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and any additional features such as photos or videos. Some online platforms offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge several hundred dollars.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it has been published?

In most cases, it is possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it has been published. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and procedures.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer to keep the obituary private, you can opt for a private or password-protected online posting. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to have control over how they are remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do so during a difficult time.
