Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about funeral services, memorial contributions, and other details. They can also help friends and family members process their grief and pay their respects to the person who has passed away.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and meaningful summary of the person's life.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and achievements. It may also include information about surviving family members, funeral services, and memorial contributions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter (around 100-150 words), while online obituaries can be longer (up to 500 words or more).

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms allow you to upload photos, videos, or audio clips to accompany the written obituary. This can help bring the person's story to life and provide a more personal tribute.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

You can usually submit an obituary through the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Online platforms may have an online submission form or require you to create an account before submitting the obituary.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can also help reduce the burden on their loved ones during a difficult time.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's often used in situations where a full obituary is not desired or necessary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death, while a eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service. A eulogy typically provides more personal anecdotes and stories about the person's life.

Can I include humor or lighthearted moments in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous anecdotes or lighthearted moments can help capture the person's personality and spirit.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private aspects of the person's life that you'd rather not share publicly, it's best to omit them from the obituary or discuss them with family members before including them.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial contributions in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial contributions in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and support a worthy cause.

How long after someone passes away should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary can vary depending on cultural traditions and personal preferences. Typically, it's published within a few days to a week after the person's passing.

Can I update or correct an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes! If there are errors or omissions in the original obituary, you can usually contact the publication or platform to request corrections or updates.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes! When writing an obituary for someone who died young or suddenly, it's especially important to be sensitive to the emotional impact on family and friends. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to the obituary.

How do I ensure that an online obituary remains accessible over time?

Many online platforms archive obituaries indefinitely. However, it's always a good idea to save a copy of the obituary for your records and consider creating a permanent online memorial page.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of someone's passing and reaching a wider audience. You can share a link to the online obituary or post a brief summary with relevant details.

What if I'm unsure about what to include in an obituary?

Dont worry! Funeral homes, online platforms, and even professional writers can provide guidance and support when crafting an obituary. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

Is it okay to include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many families consider pets to be part of their immediate family. Including them in the obituary can be a touching way to acknowledge their importance in the person's life.

Can I write an obituary for someone who didn't have any immediate family?

Yes! Even if someone didn't have immediate family members, they may have had close friends, caregivers, or community connections who would like to pay tribute through an obituary.

You can create a memory book or scrapbook with copies of the obituary, photos, cards, and other mementos. Digital platforms may also offer ways to store and share these memories online.
