Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary website, or funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to announce the death of a loved one and provide information about their life, achievements, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share funeral or memorial service details, allowing friends and family to pay their respects.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. They may work with a funeral home or obituary writer to craft a meaningful and accurate tribute. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also mention predeceased relatives, charitable donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the essential details such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a summary of the person's life and achievements.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to add photos, videos, or audio clips to the obituary. This can help celebrate the person's life and make the tribute more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

You can usually submit an obituary through the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. For online obituary websites, you can create an account and follow their submission guidelines. Funeral homes often assist with this process as well.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or website. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, while online obituary platforms may offer free or paid options with varying features. Funeral homes may also include obituary publication in their services.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

Sometimes it's possible to make minor corrections or updates to an already published obituary. However, significant changes may require re-publishing the entire notice. Check with the publication or website for their specific policies.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately or within a few hours, while newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I request corrections or changes to an existing obituary?

If you find errors or inaccuracies in an already published obituary, contact the publication or website directly to request corrections. They will guide you through their process for making changes.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

Some online obituary platforms offer private or password-protected options for families who prefer to limit access to the tribute. You can also ask funeral homes about private publishing options.

Can I include quotes, poems, or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or song lyrics can add depth and personality to the obituary. Just ensure they align with the person's character and preferences.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about sharing certain details about the deceased, consult with family members or close friends. Be respectful of privacy concerns and avoid including sensitive information that might cause distress.

What if my loved one didn't want an obituary published?

If your loved one explicitly expressed their wish not to have an obituary published, it's essential to respect their wishes. You can still create a private memorial or tribute for close family and friends.

Can I create a memorial webpage or online tribute instead of an obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms offer memorial webpage creation tools that allow you to share memories, photos, and stories about your loved one. These tributes can be shared publicly or kept private.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration varies depending on the website or platform. Some online obituaries remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period. Check with the specific website for their policies.

Can I reprint an old obituary from years ago?

You may need permission from the original publisher or copyright holder to reprint an old obituary. If you're unable to locate the original source, consider rewriting the tribute from memory or using alternative resources.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an LGBTQ+-inclusive obituary?

When writing an LGBTQ+-inclusive obituary, use language that respects the person's identity and relationships. Use their preferred name and pronouns, acknowledge same-sex partners or spouses, and highlight their contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.

How do I handle cultural or religious differences when writing an obituary?

Sensitivity and respect are key when addressing cultural or religious differences in an obituary. Research traditions and customs associated with the person's heritage and incorporate them into the tribute accordingly.

Can I include humor or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate your loved one's personality and spirit. Just ensure that any humorous elements are respectful and fitting for the occasion.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, consider seeking support from friends, family members, or a professional counselor. They can help you navigate your emotions and craft a meaningful tribute.
