Arlis Aleen Peer - February 11, 1925 - November 19, 2023

Departed: 11/19/2023 (New Salem)
Obituary Preview: Arlis Aleen Peer, 98, of Uniontown, passed away November 19, 2023 at Monarch Meadows Personal Care Home surrounded by her family.  She was born February 11, 1925, in Atwood, KS, a daughter of Franklin G Harlan Cook and Ella Corrinne Robb Cook.
Arlis, a city girl graduated from high school in NYC, then went to Cincinnati Bible Seminary. After one year, she transferred to Johnson Bible College, where she met the love of her life, Rufus Holland Peer, whom she married on December 22, 1946, spending 76 years of wedded bliss together before his passing on August 7, 2023.
As a daughter of ministers, Arlis traveled across many states, helping as they conducted meetings for mission work. Growing up, she often played piano to help in special meetings. As a teen, she helped speak at many churches, even in other states, for the mission work her parents were involved in, and she continued that up into her college years.
While dating Rufus, they started serving together, and once married, merged their talents serving several Churches, and their lives served as illustrations of the message they proclaimed – being examples of God’s Word, the Bible. They served at Gap Creek (TN), then Pine Grove (WV), then served Laughlintown, Waterford and Oak Grove (Ligonier, PA) simultaneously for 11 more years.  Their last full-time ministry was at New Salem, PA for more than 30 years. After retiring, they still did Interim Ministry for 10 more years (in Latrobe, Republic, and Connellsville).
She served alongside Rufus in multiple areas of ministry–-helping teach and lead songs at Camp Christian (Mill Run, PA), planning and leading Daily Vacation Bible Schools, encouraging area ministers’ families, publishing a youth monthly newsletter, acted as a “secretary”, playing piano for other churches' revival meetings, leading charitable donations for Mountain Mission School (orphanage) in Grundy, VA., and volunteering to help the Salvation Army's food bank for New Salem. She taught junior choir, Sunday school classes, youth groups, teen clubs, retreats, and taught Bible classes at Uniontown’s Juvenile Detention facility. Arlis loved music and often sang in choirs and cantatas, and could play the piano by ear.
While she received community awards, one stands out, as Arlis and Rufus received Johnson Bible College's Distinguished Service Alumni Award.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Raldo Cook (and his daughter Terrie Lynn Case), and her sister, Nyela (Cook) Cohoon.
Left to cherish her legacy and memory are her children Darrell [Pat] Peer (Sebring, FL), Deedra Gerkin (Shelbyville, IL), Kevan Peer (Uniontown, PA), and Keith [Beth] Peer (Belle Vernon, PA), along with 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. First Christian Church New Salem (800 New Salem Rd, Uniontown, PA 15401, will host both the
Visitations on Friday, November 24, 2023, from 2 - 4 PM, and 6 - 8 PM, and on Saturday, November 25, after Visitation at 10 AM, the family welcomes the honor of your presence at a Celebration of Life service at 11 AM. Interment will be at the Salem View Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled through Dearth Funeral Home 35 South Mill Street New Salem, PA. Many thanks to all the Church leaders and members who shared in creating a faith legacy
for all to engage. Thanks to the staff at Uniontown Healthcare and Rehab and Monarch Meadows for helping her in the final stage of life on this side of Heaven.  Special thanks to the Amedisys Home Health and Hospice teams for providing excellent care, especially Nurses Tiffany, Rhianon, and Crystal, as well as the many Aides including Bobbie, Crystal, Janice, Samantha, and Bobbi Jo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about the funeral or memorial service, and allowing friends and family to pay their respects. They can also be a valuable tool for genealogists and historians.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, and any charities or organizations where donations can be made in lieu of flowers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed than those published in newspapers.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. Some newspapers may also accept photos for publication.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they want to be remembered. This can be a therapeutic exercise and can also help reduce the burden on loved ones during a difficult time.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides additional information about the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's personality and spirit. Just be sure to keep it respectful and tasteful.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers, visit local libraries or genealogy centers, or check with funeral homes or churches where the person attended services. Many online obituary platforms also offer archives of past obituaries.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This may depend on the publication or platform. If you need to make corrections or changes, contact them directly to ask about their editing policies.

What if I don't want an obituary published at all?

In most cases, this is possible. However, keep in mind that an obituary serves as a way to inform friends and family of the person's passing, so it may still be necessary to notify them through other means.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the person's personality or spirit.

How do I handle errors in an obituary?

If you notice errors in an obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide proof of the error and any necessary corrections.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a good cause.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

Dont worry! Funeral homes often have staff who can assist with writing an obituary. You can also consider hiring a professional obituary writer or asking a friend or family member for help.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family, so it's perfectly fine to include them in an obituary.

How do I announce the death of someone who was private or reclusive?

In this case, it may be best to limit the information shared publicly out of respect for the person's privacy. A simple death notice may be sufficient.

Can I include personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes! Personal anecdotes can add warmth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to keep them respectful and relevant.

What if I'm dealing with complex family dynamics when writing an obituary?

This can be challenging. Consider seeking guidance from a trusted friend, family member, or funeral home staff member to help navigate any sensitive issues.

Can I include social media handles in an obituary?

This is becoming more common! Including social media handles can allow friends and family to share condolences and memories online.

How do I ensure accuracy when writing an obituary?

DOUBLE-check facts such as dates, names, and spellings before submitting the obituary for publication. It's also a good idea to have multiple people review it for accuracy before publishing.

What if I'm not sure what kind of information to include in an obituary?

Don't worry! Funeral home staff or professional obituary writers can guide you through the process and help you determine what information is most important to include.

Can I update an online obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the platform or website where the obituary was published. Check with them directly to see if updates are possible.
